Well, you've read the notes, the notes were long and winding, and now it is time for you to post until the long and winding cows come home.

And the word of the day is: SATORI!
-
Good morning, all! Today begins the next session of five recording days, and I am a bit worried: this morning we have the tenor who caused a lot of tsuris several weeks ago.
Then last night I learned from my comic tenor, who records on Oct 6th, that our musical director has never called him about a rehearsal! While I trust the singer, an old friend, I am concerned over the behavior of the man in charge of the music who seems incapable of staying on top of things.
As a result, I had a lot of dreams last night that were unnerving; in the last one I can home to find the walls surrounding my bathtub had collapsed into the tub. Before that I had a couple about the idiot tenor.
I think this week's sessions could use some vibes!

I have an hour before I head up to 155th Street. I have time for some oatmeal with cranberries, apples and walnuts and time to write a page of orchestration for Mr Ron Raines.
-
Morning all.
I slept late and just got up! That's nice. I don't usually sleep this late.
-
Good morning.
Elmore, I hope your recording sessions go well! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good Wishes for Recording!

DR Jane, re: the GOOD WIFE, I figured that it would be Keith who liked Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Btw, I'm guessing that you did not watch SEX & THE CITY. Cause most people who watched that show love him.

Btw, for anyone who watches HUMAN TARGET. It was supposed to premiere last night. But since FOX cancelled LONE STAR, LIE TO ME will start this Monday in its place. And HUMAN TARGET will move to the old LIE TO ME premiere date of Wednesday November 17th at 8pm.

DR ELMORE maybe it's time to dig up St Joseph and bury him on the other side of the driveway.

LEAP OF FAITH sounds so much like RAINMAKER/SHADE.....but that could just be me.
Of course it would nice if MR BK could pick up a Stagebill off the floor for the needy people in the MidWest.
-
My high school literary magazine, for which I was the Business Manager, was named SATORIAN.
-
TOD:
Favorite fish dish is trout
-
Most unusual fish dish was Blackended Mud Fish which I had at a very traditional Japanese restaurant. It was absolutely the best fish I had ever eaten...also the most expensive. My meal came to $65.00 in 1990 dollars. That was a lot of dough for me.
-
Saturday morning greetings! We had a nice family date at Middfest last night, learned many interesting things about Botswana, and saw a lot of friends, many of whom were surprised to see me "up and around." I'm going back at noon for some presentations and Richard will join me later at the performance of our favorite local guitarist, Jim McCutcheon.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm waiting...

Onion bagel, toasted, slathered with whole milk ricotta; coffee, black.

And it's another MTA Track Work Weekend. However, unlike last week when they were working on 18 of the 19, only 16 of the 19 lines are affected.
And I really hope the track work doesn't and hasn't affected DR elmore's recording session. -At least the 1 train is running this weekend all the way up to 168th Street.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
Hmmm...
The one that comes to mind right now is the Greek meze, Marides Skordalia - fried smelts served with garlic sauce (which is basically just pureed garlic). The smelts are lightly breaded, then deep-fried whole, bones and all, and they are fried long enough to actually "cook" the bones. -The bones are very small to begin with. You eat the whole fish. -With lots of the skordalia.

As for the Topic of the Day redux...
Favorite fish dish: Fish and Chips. -Preferably cod.

As for the Topic of the Day tridux...
Most amazing fish dish I've ever had: Hmmm... I'm thinking it was a poached halibut steak at some fancy restaurant. Or it could have been broiled.

~~~~~NON-TSURIS RECORDING SESSION VIBES TO DR ELMORE~~~~~
Indeed. A veritable tsunami of non-tsuris vibes.
-
Hey everyone.
Thanks, DR Jose for the nap vibes, lord knows I'd love a nap, and yes, my sanity. Thankful I have such fantastic people in my life that ensure that I do not go insane - including everyone here!!!
Everything is going well with the show. We are moving along quite nicely. Things will pick up this week when we get into the staging of the show even more. The biggest projects at the moment is the creation of the K2 part (combining elements of K2 and K3 AND the horn part) and figuring out what to do with the damn Car Chase scene. Both should be easy once we have a concept.
-
TOD: I once went on a deep sea fishing boat off the coast of the Florida Keys. Caught some fish that was about 2 feet long before my hangover and the motion of the ocean, not to mention the diesel fumes of the boat, made me not happy to be alive. But I got over the sea sickness and we cooked that fish up (my friend, Joyce, also caught one), only to realize the fish was practically all bones. We picked at some delicate, tasty fish, but it was a lot of work for a little wonderful flavor.
And now...
I happened to score tickets to both presentations at The Metropolitan Opera today via their new Online Weekend Rush Ticket Lottery (http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/contests/drawing/index.aspx). So, I'll be seeing Les Contes d'Hoffmann this afternoon, and Rigoletto this evening.
*When I picked up the tickets earlier this week, as I was walking way from the box office window, I realized that I had picked up $1000 worth of tickets for only $100. Not a bad deal at all. -Thank You, Mrs. Rush and Mr. Leichtman.
More dead fish. When I was in Spain, I saw some people order a whole fish that was baked in a salt crust. It was dramatically presented by two men who carried it out on a huge board, and one broke the salt seal with a hammer and chisel before exposing the 5- or 6-pound fish. The people I was traveling with at the time wouldn't eat fish, so no one else was interested in ordering one. I couldn't resist. On our last night in Spain, I ordered the fish to eat by myself and it was delicious. I ate the entire thing and was I didn't have to share it.
I thought this was some incredible arduous process, but I tried it the following Christmas and it was simple. Cover fish with salt. Bake. Break open salt. Eat.
I now do this about once a year. Making the homemade garlic mayonnaise to go with it is harder than baking the fish.
Favorite fish? Anchovies, trout, halibut, skate, salmon, tuna, mackerel, you name it. One exception: Mahi mahi. Too sweet, too often too mealy.
And I will eat most fish any way you name, from sashimi to deep fried (had excellent deep-fried, Southern-style pollock just yesterday made by an Asian family that works all too close to where I live).
My, that sounds delicious. Love fried smelts.
And grilled fresh sardines. And ... I need to stop thinking about fish.
DR Elmore - it will be over for today by the time you see this, but I'm sending vibes for a smooth recording session!
Off to more Middfest - bye for now!
DR Ginny - Have a good Middfest!
I'm up and will probably try to jog this morning rather than in the afternoon, which is what I've been doing for the last few weeks.
Excellent vibes and xylophones for smooth sailing recording sessions, weather, floods, and Sunset Blvd - and anything else I missed.
Being inspired by DR MATTHEW & his Sunset Boulevard experience - I am thinking about putting my name in tha hat to direct CAMELOT....because I do love the show.
I got some kind of Seafood Picasso seafood platter somewhere in Baltimore that was great....I still don't know everything that was on it....or where it was....but it was wonderful!
Having icy cold watermelon for lunch (after an arduous Pilates class). The bird, however, doesn't want to share his watermelon with me. And of course, since he is the center of the universe, the plate of watermelon is his.
Finished my 58th volume of Anthony Trollope this week and the last work of fiction I hadn't read. It was called "Castle Richmond" and was one of my favorites, perhaps in the top five of his novels. And so a six-year reading project comes to a close. I think I'm going to read some modern stuff before diving back into the 19th century novel.
Modern stuff is a good direction to go.
Fish. I am supposed to eat it. Rarely do. I am forbidden to cook fish in the house because the smell upsets the resident vegetarian.
Best: The salmon DR MusicGuy made one night.
-
I wonder if the books in that shop in DR BEN's picture smell like fish & chips?
-
I hate fish. I hated fish even before I was a vegetarian. I think this springs from my designated role as fish cleaner when I'd go fishing with my Dad.
-
This morning I went to coffee with Paul and ended up being a walk-in at a mosaic class he was taking. So, I'm making a really cool trivet. We grout next Saturday, lol. I didn't qite get all my tiles set, so I'll finishat home this week so it's set for grouting next Saturday. I'm having quite the spontaneous weekend. It's fun
-
I like all kinds of fish. can't say what the best ever is....maybe the grilled salmon I had in Alaska
-
Topic of the Day: McDonald's Filet-O-Fish. Or Skipper's Fish & Chips. That's about it.
-
I'm back and it was a delightful day! First of all, I owe the tenor a big apology for my attitude - that doesn't mean I can't still be pissed for his putting me over a barrel - but he was wonderful this morning: friendly, amenable, sing beautifully, and took direction from the producer excellently. I cannot say enough good about his performance. Then Miss Rebecca Luker showed up and was quite wonderful as well. The subway work made our lovely Sara Jean Ford late but we got a good performance of her duet with Rebecca, "Romping Redheads!" that is quite naughty and funny. Everyone in the studio, including me, ended up being chorus for Zak Stains on his repeart of the "Dodge Brothers March," an ode to Detroit and the motor industry. And now I'm home.
I think I will order some dinner and watch more episodes of the last season of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA.
Thank you all for the excellent vibes!
-
Glad it was a good day, Larry.
Some father-son bonding, eh?
I jogged, I ate, I did errands and whatnot - no packages, but the important envelope was there, so that's good.
Well, I'm off. My niece and I are going to see a movie. I'm not sure which one, but it's one that she wants to see. Until later.
Well, I'm off. My niece and I are going to see a movie. I'm not sure which one, but it's one that she wants to see. Until later.
I haven't learned that ability to be nice about going to see a movie with either of my nephews. I've seen too many movies I guess that I've fallen asleep during. And they keep shouting (louder than the movie itself) about how good it was.
-
Well, "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" has some good music, but the lyrics are so banal that I don't know how often this one is going to get a listen.
No guests. All alone.
How many more posts until page 4?
Not many, I hope.
"But Susan Sontag's dead
Sorry."
A sampling of lyrics from "Illness as Metaphor" from "Bloody Bloody."
That's one of the better lyrics.
"So tonight I'll sing the saddest songs
For everyone that I've done wrong
And if you don't know how to sing along
Well, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
But the band plays on."
"The Saddest Song."
Apt title.
With that, I'll leave the rest to the critics, who love this emo-rock (their term) score.
And that took us to Page 4.
I wonder if your hubby liked/watched him on Law & Order.
I have some shows to catch up on. And a lot of reading to do.
I just came back from a bike ride. It was very brisk out (maybe 50 probably less). I had a long sleeve thick t-shirt, a sweat shirt and my gloves and ear muffs. So i was good.
We didn't watch that either.
Keith had a surprise for Sherlock & me this morning. He joined us on our outing to Mt. Ashland. We had a nice hike and then went into town for lunch. :)
-
Bruce, or anyone familiar with L.A, what old & well known restaurant used to have the best Monte Cristo sandwiches? Keith says we used to eat lunch there with my father, which means it was after the Kiru closed. What year was that again?
-
For those DR's who don't know, or don't remember, my father's office was one block away from Bruce's father's restaurant.
-
I think the Kiru stayed open for a couple of years after my father was gone - but around 1967, I think.
-
We are back from Middfest, which I think has "jumped the shark." In its glory days, I used to declare our kitchen CLOSED for the weekend because there were so many wonderful choices available from all the food vendors. This year there were only about 3 or 4 booths selling actual food, most of which I could not eat. Many of the artifacts from Botswana intended for the various displays did not arrive on time and the University of Chicago sent multiple copies of a book about medieval women writers instead of Dr. Parson's book about how Botswana achieved independence. And, after a summer of drought, it rained all day today, forcing the dance and music performances inside to a small space in the city building lobby.
What did go right was the history project which brought in several informative and engaging speakers and the basket weaver who conversed with the audience, through an interpreter, and demonstrated her craft. The literature project also did a nice job building a replica of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency/Speedy Motors building and populating it with very good actors who interacted with visitors as the 4 main characters.
We stopped and picked up Chinese carry-out on the way home.
-
Waiting for me when I got home: a fun surprise package from dear DR Elmore containing a double CD of Joan Morris/William Bolcom recordings and Advance to the Rear on DVD. Thank you, o friend of friends :-* !
-
Hiya, kidz!!!
Well, Jane sent me the link to Bruce's interview - yowza!!! So thrilled!!!
They announced the Jan 24 inductees into the Theater Hall of Fame - I wonder, do you need tickets to that??? I think I'd like to go...
-
Hello, everyone.
TOD:
I wasn't much of a fish eater until I had an office near a wonderful little restaurant called Catch of the Day. What a joy that place was! Wonderful soups, good salads, and very fresh fish. I stayed at that job much longer than I would have otherwise in order to "sup" at COTD each week.
-
Fish dishes... my mom used to make a swell bouilliabaisse - how the hell do you spell that?? It's a French fish/shellfish stew. Yummm...
These daze, I love the slab o' salmon you can get at Costco, grilled on the barbecue up at the cabin. Every summer I look forward to that.
-
Seriously, though - if any of yiz knows how ya get tickets to the Gershwin for Monday Jan 24, 2011, please email me. I'd really really really like to be there.
-
Very best fish may have the salmon at Villa D'Este in Alexandria, VA. They used to serve wild salmon pomodoro that was out of this world. Unfortunately, the restaurant has fallen on hard times and the last time I ate there the chef had been replaced and the food really wasn't as good. Same concept, inferior (to my taste) execution.
-
I'm here at my sister Rikki's place - tonight is a birthday party her kids are giving for her 60th b'day next week - I'm her designated driver. We're about to head over the hill to Playa Vista. I'm cracking my 1996 Chateau Margaux for the festivities!!! Can't wait to taste it - I've had it since 1998, just waiting for it to ripen, waiting for a special occasion... can't wait forever, as tomorrow is promised to no one...
-
Old Town Alexandria has a Dublin-style "chipper", ie, fish and chips place, that I used to frequent. Once I was diagnosed with mercury toxicity, presumably from eating fish, my appetite for it waned.
-
and off I go...
-
Hi, Penny.
-
I believe it was DR JMK who asked recently about vitamin D. Several years ago, some new research was published, which indicated that (1) vitamin D is needed for the prevention of far more ailments than previously thought, and (2) the daily requirement is also far greater. The recommended amount rose from 400 IU/day to 4000. The study was widely publicized and now many practitioners test for vitamin D. Every person I know of who has been tested and been found to be too low.
-
Although the majority of practitioners advocate taking a supplement, there are a few who refer their patients to either spend 20-40 minutes/day in the sun or use a light box. Most who advocate sun also say that your skin must be exposed. The angle of the sun's rays also play a role and in some climates one simply is unable to expose enough skin.
-
If you use a supplement it takes quite a while to improve your numbers; mine have been increasing about ten points each year and I take 4000-5000 IU/day.
-
Hi ;D
-
Happy weekend ;D
-
I discovered Friday night Jazz at LACMA last night. What a treat, outdoor beautiful courtyard, live music, and art.
Will try to make this my Friday night stop between work and going home, till the last show at the end of November.
-
If someone wishes to have their blood tested for vitamin D I'd recommend directlabs.net or lef.org, as you can order directly (ie, you don't need a physician's approval). Both have discounted prices and Direct Labs is having a sale on that test this month. It's the 25 Hydroxy test.
Colin Campbell's book, THE CHINA STUDY, has a rather extensive explanation of vitamin D in Appendix C. You can read it online at Amazon.
Now, surely that is more than any DR ever wanted to know about vitamin D!
-
Just listened to The Unforgiven/The Way West. 8) 8)
That pie looked heavenly, John G.
We just got home from seeing "Young Frankenstein."
-
Elmore, I'm so glad your recording session went well!!
-
Spent Friday afternoon at Kaiser for my 3 year physical. I did not eat or drink anything (except water) for 18 hours for the blood tests, and I felt great. So, now I am convinced that FOOD is the root of all my health problems. Don't eat/weigh less/feel better. Doctor agreed, she looked at the list of complaints I had (a long list) and said almost all would go away by being 40 lbs lighter, walking 2 hours every other day, and changing my diet drastically.
I have 3 weeks of meds to repair my stomach, and then just change my bad habits. :)
LIFE IS GOOD
Better get back to life. Watched American Splendor this morning. Boy is that my kind of movie.
I think the Kiru stayed open for a couple of years after my father was gone - but around 1967, I think.
Hmm, I thought it was later that Keith began joining me sometimes to meet my father for lunch. We were engaged so it could have been '67.
You don't remember any other nice restaurants in the area?
-
DR Sam, good luck changing your eating & exercise habits!!! VIBES YOU SOON FEEL GREAT ALL THE TIME!
-
Going out to get some fruit now.
-
Looks like a nice dust storm is heading our way. Hopefully with some rain following!
Sorry to hear that. I loved Middfest the year that I lived in Middletown. Japan was the country that year and I think it was probably the first time I had sushi.
Just sent off my first "webisode" to the Vampire Diaries web director to get his comments so I can revise it before sending it to the network. It's too long and I want to let him chose what to cut; don't want to cut any bits that he liked!
Life is good, and I sincerely hope this works for you. I could stand to lose a few pounds myself. Let us know how everything is progressing.
and off I go...
Good to hear from you.
While I was uploading that I had time to buy tickets to the PeeWee Herman show (by waiting, some better seats became available!) and find a hotel. My mom has been worried about bedbugs and this hotel is only one of 3 in NY that is certified bedbug free. It was cheaper than the Edison, which was sold out anyway, so it will be nice to try out a new NY hotel: http://www.distrikthotel.com/
It seems to have very good ratings!
So...I just spent @3K and haven't even gotten our plane tickets yet. I guess this is the most I've ever spent to go to a movie--one I've already seen! :-)
Better get back to life. Watched American Splendor this morning. Boy is that my kind of movie.
I bought a copy of that recently at Big Lots for the grand total of $3. I haven't watched it yet, but I remember loving it when it came out. Am watching Paul Giamatti in "The Last Station" right now. Great Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer, too.
TOD:
When we lived in Seattle my dad would go salmon fishing and then can his catch. We didn't have much $$ so we had this salmon several times a week for dinner, plus salmon sandwiches for lunch. It was years before I could eat salmon again but now it's one of my favorites. I like pretty much all fish and shellfish, especially sushi. The only things I can't deal with are sea urchin, raw oysters and salmon eggs (we used to fish with them!).
-
If we can expand the TOD to shellfish, my favorite is lobster.
-
Most memorable seafood meal: Clint Eastwood's CHANGELING premiere at Nobu. That was the only good fringe benefit of working on the Johnny Mercer project with him.
-
When I was 10, we lived in Maryland and the VA used to have these crab picnics in the park. They would boil up pots of crabs, lay newspapers on the tables and give everyone hammers and picks. No butter necessary! I had never eaten such a messy meal where everyone ate with such abandon. It was very memorable!
-
In the 80's, my 2 best friends and I went to the private island of St. Catherine's, off the coast of Georgia. A friend of ours was doing an archeology project there. It's a unique place full of endangered species. Ring-tailed lemurs run wild there...so cute!
While there, we would put out crab pots in the morning and pull them in at night and boil the crabs. So delicious!
TOD - we live on an Island and my dad had a boat when I was growing up. He also gotput of work at 4:15 and we lived 1 mile from his office - so in the summer we would be on the water by 5 Pm just about every day - on the weekdns we would goout early - we would goout at night to net up crabs
(you shine a flash light on the water and then scoop them up in a net as they swim by
we would clam with our toes -- (stand in water up to our shoulders and wiggle our toes in the sand until we felt a shell, then dive under and scoop them up) we'd get scallops occassionally too
We would go fishing all of the time, flounder, blowfish, snappers and bluefish were the usaul catch , with an occassional eel,
I don't actually eat fish though
I also like AMERICAN SPLENDOR!
That pie looked heavenly, John G.
Here's a link to the recipe:
Sounds easy! I've book-marked this for the next time I have to bring something to a gathering. Yum!
It's really simple, DR Edisaurus.
My kind of recipe!
By the way, since Southwest is buying AirTran, I hope to be able to make it to the Atlanta area sometime sooner than I thought.
I must have missed it, but when/why are you coming to Atlanta? Let me know if you need any tips, etc. Of course, DR Jose knows more about what to do here than I do!
My little French boy is in town and they gave him a convertible for his rental car. So we cruised around Peachtree Street last night; perfect weather for it!
-
it poured rain here all day yesterday -- as he was leaving at 4:3o PM the man who runs the building canteen notice and niotifed me that the back window of my van was wide open
and had been since 7:30 Am ...fortunaltey the angle o the rain was such that the cloth seat was not Completely Soaked --- but it was wet enough
fortunaltey today was a dry hot and sunny day and the seat seems to hav edried with no ill effects
Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot ;
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'Twas his intent.
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below.
Poor old England to overthrow.
By God's providence he was catch'd,
With a dark lantern and burning match
Holloa boys, Holloa boys, let the bells ring
Holloa boys, Holloa boys, God save the King!
Hip hip Hoorah !
Hip hip Hoorah !
A penny loaf to feed ol'Pope,
A farthing cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down,
A faggot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar,'
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head,
Then we'll say: ol'Pope is dead.
I have great friends who live in Decatur and try to come visit when I can. Haven't been able to since getting laid off.
-
John G, I am intrigued by the salted fish.
I forgot to mention that I love fish...all shapes, colors, and sizes. I rarely cook it, however, because it is so expensive, but I will order it at a restaurant, now and then, as a treat.
Good evening!! Home from a wonderful night at the Symphony. I enjoyed every minute from the kick off dinner to the last note of Beethoven's 5th. I especially loved Sir James and Lady Jeanne Gallway. They were incredible and it was great to hear flute music. For those who don't know, I started college as a flute performance major. I haven't played in years. I got my flute out when I got home and played a few scales....the cats ran and hid. Guess I need to practice a little ;)
Just finished watching the movie version of OUTSOURCED. It was delightful, and sweet, and a real "feel good" movie.
It was quite a bit different from the TV series. But of course the TV version is a sitcom.
-
I shall now sit down and view SHIKARI, which is a 1960s version of KING KONG. I have previously viewed it on VCD without subtitles and loved it, but it is now on DVD with English subtitles so I expect to love it even more.
-
and for your enjoyment, a couple of screen caps from SHIKARI.
Good Evening!
I really, really liked Les Contes d'Hoffmann at The Met today. The Olympia was slightly miscast - her voice is just not big enough for the hall - but the rest of the cast seemed spot on. As for Rigoletto, well, the Gilda was also miscast - at least to my ear (as well as some others in the house). Just not the right type, nor the right size, vocally speaking. I could tell that her "father" and "lover" were having to hold back in order not to over-balance her.
-
Long day, I'm tired. Lots to do tomorrow so I better get some sleep. Night
-
In other news...
Well...
I woke up feeling a little off. I just figured some coffee and some "awake time" would clear things up. Alas, not quite. I felt great during the matinee, but during dinner, my eyes started to feel "fuzzy". Then during Hoffmann, I felt a little warm, but I figured that was probably just the temp in the hall since it was a bit stuffy. Then it was back out onto Lincoln Center Plaza and the cool night air... Then into the somewhat overheated subway... And now that I've been home for a bit, I believe I am running a low fever. So...
Goodnight.
-
I did another mile and a half jog, had a nice telephonic conversation with muse Margaret, who cheered me up, and I think I'll take a shower now and wash some junky feelings down the drain.
-
Well, I'm off. My niece and I are going to see a movie. I'm not sure which one, but it's one that she wants to see. Until later.
The movie that we saw was called "Bloomington" and we saw it down in Portland at the 14th Annual Portland Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (http://www.plgff.org/). It wasn't too bad.
-
I don't think that it was worth driving 110 miles to see, but that's me.
-
;)
-
I think I can make it...
-
...since we're so close...
Yes, I was very tired the other night. ::)
While I was uploading that I had time to buy tickets to the PeeWee Herman show (by waiting, some better seats became available!) and find a hotel. My mom has been worried about bedbugs and this hotel is only one of 3 in NY that is certified bedbug free. It was cheaper than the Edison, which was sold out anyway, so it will be nice to try out a new NY hotel: http://www.distrikthotel.com/
It seems to have very good ratings!
So...I just spent @3K and haven't even gotten our plane tickets yet. I guess this is the most I've ever spent to go to a movie--one I've already seen! :-)
This beats just going to Portland to see a movie.
