And now, as promised, the new Kritzerland limited edition.  You know the drill - 19.98 paid directly via paypal.com using the Kritzerland paypal address of kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  This is an absolutely wonderful score and I recommend it highly.

“OUT OF THE SKY COMES THE SCREEN’S MOST INCREDIBLE SPECTACLE OF MEN AND WAR”

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack release:

A Bridge Too Far
Music Composed and Conducted by John Addison

A Bridge Too Far, Richard Attenborough’s 1977 epic $22 million dollar film adapted from the 1974 book by Cornelius Ryan, tells the story of Operation Market Garden, the failed Allied attempt to break through German lines and take several bridges at a time when the Germans were on the retreat.  With a literate script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, All The President’s Men, Marathon Man, The Princess Bride, Magic), camerawork by Geoffrey Unsworth, and an amazing cast of stars, including Dirk Bogarde, James Caan, Laurence Olivier, Ryan O’Neal, Robert Redford, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Edward Fox, Anthony Hopkins, Gene Hackman, Hardy Kruger, Maximilian Schell, and Liv Ullman, A Bridge Too Far was and is a compelling and exciting film that holds up beautifully after all these years.

For such a huge and impressive production, A Bridge Too Far received no Academy Award nominations whatsoever (it was the year of Annie Hall), but did receive several BAFTA nominations including Best Film and Best Director – it took home several wins – co-star Edward Fox, cameraman Geoffrey Unsworth, Best Sound, and one for the film’s musical score by John Addison.

By the time of A Bridge Too Far, John Addison had written several classic film scores (Tom Jones, The Loved One, Sleuth, Torn Curtain, The Charge of the Light Brigade, Start the Revolution Without Me, The Seven-Percent Solution), and had been nominated twice for Academy Awards, winning for Tom Jones.   When Addison found out that Richard Attenborough was going to make A Bridge Too Far, he called Attenborough and said he desperately wanted to do the music for the film, as he had a very personal connection to it – as a young soldier he’d served with the XXX Corps, the tank division that was at the heart of Operation Market Garden. And Addison delivered the goods, composing one of his greatest scores, with a rousing, tuneful march at its center, stirring action music, and some stunning dramatic cues.

Richard Attenborough said this about Addison and his score:  “I shall never forget the occasion when, at Joe Levine’s invitation, he saw the actual film.  At the end he was obviously greatly moved. ‘One works because one must,’ he said, ‘but sometimes the work is what you want with all your being and this, for me, is one of those occasions.  If I can’t write something wonderful for this film, then I should give up.’  When Joe Levine and I sat in the small music room of John’s Los Angeles home and listened to him playing the score on his piano for the first time, we were both on the verge of tears.  He had, indeed, written some truly wonderful music.”

A Bridge Too Far was originally released on a United Artists LP.  In 1999, Ryko issued it on CD, which subsequently went out of print – it has been out of print for years now and is a much-requested title, which is why we decided to reissue it.  The original LP masters were used for the CD, and it’s been completely remastered it for this CD release.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the third week of November – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I watched the first two episodes of THE EVENT last night (I've been recording it on Saturdays). I can't decide if I like this show or not. It is complicated. You never really know what is happening. There are a lot of characters. And it's slightly confusing.  The interesting part is that you don't really know what is happening, which seems rare on tv.  I think I will watch last night's episode and then decide if I will keep watching it.

Yes most interesting notes.

10/10/10

Ten is the number of earthly completeness.....with three being the number of heavenly or spiritual completeness, so a day with THREE TENS is a nice combination of both - a great day to deal with beginnings AND endings....

Start new projects - discard old ones - and just enjoy the day.

Good morning, all! I slept until 8:30 and decided to do laundry. I've had some coffee and sme breakfast courtesy of MacDonalds and it's time to put the laundry in the dryers.

I will then mop the bathroom and kitchen, maybe write a bit of a chart for Ron Raines, finish the laundry, and look over some of the LADY OF THE SLIPPER and BABES IN TOYLAND writing. Then, I'm watching a lot of DVDs, beginning with BONES season 5.

Little Ricky is adorable! Between his photo and all of the ones DR Laura posts, I really want to get a kitten, but I think its climbing all over my small space wold drive me battier than I am already, and - since i've always lived in caash flow hell - i've always worried about money for vet and food. Since none of us on the Herbert project have any idea how much time we've got with it, I worry a lot. Still, I must say, I'd like a kitten.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes for all, for any occasion today! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
bk - Regarding your "Overdone Medley", as a friend of mine who tried a similar thing found out, the joke only works if almost everyone in the audience at the time has actually heard the songs over and over and over and over again.  Otherwise, it's just not a "joke", to them at least.
I started a rewrite on my new play, but as I was driving home late last night it came to me how the story should go. Out when basically the whole plot, several characters and in went some new characters, a revised storyline, and a new framing story. I was so anxious to get my ideas on paper that when I got home I started to write and then fell asleep doing so, but it is imbedded n my mind so I will not forget.
Thanks all for welcoming Ricky.  So far so good.  He's  settled in to his room nicely, loves playing and cuddling.  Callie has been almost face to face with him through a partially open door.  She hissed, he didn't, just cried and backed down.  She walked away.  Boo is really out of sorts, but she's seen him and also walked away.  She is also playing with toys she hasn't looked at in years and is doing a little hiding under the bed, but only until I hold out a toy for her to attack.
We're making a few little changes to the Kritzerland site.  More CD covers on the home page, and all the sold out titles are going away in the list on that page.  You'll still be able to find a complete list of everything by clicking on a link provided right below the cover images.  That will clean up that page considerably.  And we're finally inaugurating the "News" section tomorrow, and there will be a new "News" column every one to two weeks.
Thus far, the only books you could buy via Kritzerland were the last two - but all of them will be available by tomorrow - signed copies.
We'll be working on the "Gallery" section, too, and by the end of the week, all sections should have content.
Sunday afternoon greetings!  We are back quite early from Lima - no after-church meetings or shut-in calls.
Just yesterday I'd told Richard that sometime during October I'd have to eat a pumpkin doughnut and the person providing coffee-hour refreshments today included them on her menu.  She'd cut all the pastries in half, so I had half a pumpkin doughnut, my first bakery sweet since August 2.  It was good, but half was more than enough.
I've been watching the new DVD of FAUST from the Royal Opera with Bryn Terfel; it;s set in the 1870s, not the 1859 premiere date or the traditional medieval Germany, and some of it's quite good. I'm not sure about the "Cabaret d/Enfer" that ends the Kermesse Act, since we've gone from a street fair to another Eurotrash redo of CABARET.
I watched the first two episodes of THE EVENT last night (I've been recording it on Saturdays). I can't decide if I like this show or not. It is complicated. You never really know what is happening. There are a lot of characters. And it's slightly confusing.  The interesting part is that you don't really know what is happening, which seems rare on tv.  I think I will watch last night's episode and then decide if I will keep watching it.
Jennifer, I've been watching this and I enjoy it.  But answers do come fairly quickly...not everything, of course, but it's not like "Lost" where the one big question isn't answered for years.  They also bring up other questions as things go along, but questions are supposed to be answered throughout the episodes.
I got through all of FAUST, which ended up batting 500; for everything good, the idiot director and more idiotic choreographer screwed the piece up with their Eurotrash improvements. I'm getting to the point where I believe no one's capable of staging an opera well. Sometimes their ideas were good, like trying to link the ballet in the Walpurgisnacht scene with Marguerite's pregnancy and infanticide, but the ballet music had ugly cuts, the dancing often seemed to consist of ballerinas behaving badly, with screams and some S&M, led by this CABARET-ish male who seemed to have stumbled out of an Alan Cumming MC contest, and Bryn Terfel in drag with a tiara and bustle. WTF?
DR Jennifer - Pumpkin Pie! YES!! -Were they giving out samples at CostCo so that you could try it, taste it?  -Have you ever had Pumpkin Bread? or, since they seem to be everywhere now, a Pumpkin Whoopie Pie?
I had a pumpkin whoopie pie from Souper Jenny's on Friday. I wasn't impressed. I made red velvet ones for my niece's baby shower; they were OK, but I guess I'd rather have a cupcake!
I have made very good progress today in unpacking boxes. Went through boxes of old magazines....Classic Images, Films of the Golden Age, Scarlet Street, Film Fax, Playgirl, Video Watchdog, Autograph Times, Movie Collectors World, and others.
Whew...I am keeping about half of them and the other half are being donated to The Humane Society Thrift Store.
I have yet  to locate my box(s) of old Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines. It is really odd that I haven't come across them yet. There should also be a box of old movie stills, which I have not yet found. They have got to be here someplace.
The Pride Parade had more swag than any other parade I've ever been to, especially since an election is coming up. It's interesting to see which politicians jump on the gay bandwagon only for events like this when they think it will get them more votes. Swag-wise, lots of skittles (taste the rainbow!) beer koozies, leis (from GayOrbitz) condoms (!), rubber rainbow bracelets, luggage tags, rubber balls, and Macy's made special pride scarves for the occasion. I expected to have fun, but I didn't anticipate how genuinely moved and happy I felt to see so much support and inclusion from major corporations, churches, local businesses and straight-but-not-narrow folks, and to see all these out and proud people, including high school kids who seemed equally as moved to be out there on the front lines.
Right now is the first time since Ricky came home that Boo has gone to sleep on my lap.  She sat there for awhile last night but was pretty ticked off.  She and Ricky were really close to each other today, I was holding him while sitting down and she was on the floor.  She didn't hiss or anything. He meowed she did too then walked away.  Very good. All three seem very calm tonight.  I am happy.
OK... And now that I'm caffeinated it's time to get the rest of my day in gear. First up is a Noon(!) matinee of the chamber opera version of "Puss in Boots", followed by a wine & cheese tasting at Del Posto, then yet another Food Truck Festival, then some more random NYC Food & Wine Festival activities.  -And, best of all, it's all FREE because of Twitter! ;)
Laters...
My friend Steven LaBrie may be performing today as the Miller.
Steven was on at the 5:00 show today. However, the "other" Miller also looked pretty good in boxers and a t-shirt. :)
*And the production, overall, was quite wonderful and magical! Moisés Kaufman's direction was filled with some very imaginative touches, and the puppetry by Blind Summit Theatre was whimsical and wonder-inducing.  Oh, and it was very well sung and played too!
That reminds me, DR Jose, there is an ad on TV for, I think, Blackberry that shows this woman who has a truck she takes around Manhattan.  She sellls "Treats" out of it.  I was wondering if this was a real truck, or just one created for the ad.
That is none other than the wonderful and generous Kim Ina from The Treats Truck (http://www.treatstruck.com/).  We actually talked about that commercial today at Carts in the Parc. I asked her where and how they shot the "public" scenes, and she said they just followed her one day with some cameras and got lucky with the weather. -I thought they were set up.
Even Monkey likes The Treats Truck!
DR Jennifer - Pumpkin Pie! YES!! -Were they giving out samples at CostCo so that you could try it, taste it?  -Have you ever had Pumpkin Bread? or, since they seem to be everywhere now, a Pumpkin Whoopie Pie?
No they were not giving samples of pumpkin pie. They were giving samples of apple sugar pie.  I don't think i've ever had pumpkin bread. AndI know I have not heard of pumpkin whoopie pie.
I'm going to go a little crazier with the CDs. I've got too many classical CDs, and how often do I listen to more than one recording of COSI FAN TUTTE?
DR elmore - Do you by chance have a period instrument recording of Cosí? A friend of mine is prepping for the upcoming Met production that William Christie is conducting, and he's been trying to find a "lighter" recording.
The three recordings I have of COSI FAN TUTTE are the early 1950s recording from the Met in English with Eleanor Steber, Richard Tucker & Roberta Peters; the EMI with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and Crista Ludwig, conducted (I think) by Bohm; and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with Jerry Hadley and Felicity Lott, conducted by Charles MacKerras. I do have a period instrument DVD (John Eliot Gardiner), with Rodney Gilfry.
There is a period instrument performance on CD conducted by Rene Jacobs.
BK, how odd I just picked up a BRIDGE TOO FAR on DVD.  I've never seen it, despite the fact that William Goldman is one of my favourite writers.  Been meaning to stick it into the DVD player the last few days.
It has been years since I have seen the movie, but if I remember correctly, it does go on and on.
I like A BRIDGE TOO FAR.
SPOILER:
The only problem with it is that it's factually correct in that the Germans win.
You're welcome, DR Jeanne. -I actually prefer some of the more elaborate piano and orchestral transcriptions - and the Swingle Singers(!) - over the more "accurate" string trio/quartet versions.
*I have a friend who plays cello in a string quartet, and they almost always get asked to play the "Canon" at weddings. Alas, the cello part is the same sequence of eight notes played over and over and over and over and over again. ;)
The Pride Parade had more swag than any other parade I've ever been to, especially since an election is coming up. It's interesting to see which politicians jump on the gay bandwagon only for events like this when they think it will get them more votes. Swag-wise, lots of skittles (taste the rainbow!) beer koozies, leis (from GayOrbitz) condoms (!), rubber rainbow bracelets, luggage tags, rubber balls, and Macy's made special pride scarves for the occasion. I expected to have fun, but I didn't anticipate how genuinely moved and happy I felt to see so much support and inclusion from major corporations, churches, local businesses and straight-but-not-narrow folks, and to see all these out and proud people, including high school kids who seemed equally as moved to be out there on the front lines.
In the meantime, here in New York, Paladino, well... :-\  >:(  ???
It grew somewhere that we lived when I was young, and I remember eating it raw right from the garden. When I was older I heard that you weren't supposed to do that; that it was dangerous. I never seemed to suffer any ill effects from it, so I wonder how true that is.
