Yesterday, Druxy posted this:

I had a great book signing today, the best I've ever had in a bookstore.

 :)

Among the attendees were Diane McBain, Bridget Hanley, June Wilkinson, Gigi Perreau (who I haven't seen in 40 years), plus Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Levy (he's Spielberg's personal publicist) and several others.

Catching a 10 am flight back to Austin tomorrow.

Congrats on the successful signing and...

Good morning, all! I guess the frustration over the Oaf Above Me carried over to my sleep last night, since I had dreams about dissension and frustration. I went to bed at 9:30, woke around 12:15, and slept until 6:30. The last thing I remember dreaming about before the alarm went off was LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40, my most unsuccessful venture of the past several years. Now I've got one of the damned songs from the score stuck inside my head and it won't go away.

I'm waiting for the laundromat to open. This is my last morning to do laundry before I'm inside a recording situation for the bext four days, so I've got laundry, and, while the clothes are washing, a trip to the market. While things are drying, I'll take my walk, come back here and begin making tuna salad. After the clothes are put away, vacuum the apartment. At noon, I have to head to Toyland for an editing session, and this evening I'm having dinner with Bruce Pomahac and John McGlinn's executor. At some point I have to sort my music for the sessions this week.

As for the TOD, I love Indian food; I guess it's the most "exotic" cuisine I've tried.

I too enjoyed MAD MEN last night.....although I am not sure where the promo "Don & Peggy both get tempting offers...." came from......

Harry was around for awhile - I like that actor....and Peggy and Don and Pete all had nice scenes....as did Christina Hendricks.....I like what Betty's husband said to her.....although I didn't like a particular coupling and uncoupling.....it would be great if when we get back next year, the actual event has gone the other way.....we shall see.

TOD:  I don't have a particularly exotic palate...I won't be eating squid or oysters or any seafood really, and most Asian food has to be very basic meat and rice dishes.  As for things like rattlesnake or sheep's testicles, no thanks.

But I do love Indian food.  Bk, when The Lovely Wife first came to LA, she made the same mistake you did when I took her to an Indian restaurant.  She thought she could do "very Spicy" and didn't know what that meant in terms of Indian food.  She is still not particularly fond of Indian.  But I like many of their chicken dishes...tandoori, tikki, marsala...and I also love the Lamb and some of the curries, lentils, the na'an bread, and the onion baji (??spelling).  Unfortunately TLW doesn't much care to go to Indian restaurants, so I either have to do it with like-minded souls or by myself...usually when I'm in London, where you can even get microwaveable Indian at your local Tesco's or Sainsbury's.  There used to be a place in the Glendale Galleria food court that served Indian that I used to go to all the time.

I will say that eating tandoori tikka is very good for the diet - very low-cal - one chicken breast, a little rice and I didn't use any sauce.

I've had a delicious scrambled egg on 15-grain bread with alfalfa sprouts and low-cal ranch-bacon dressing and taken my meds and vitamins. I didn't get to my walk, so I think I'll do that around 11 on my way down to Toyland. It's a beautiful day outside.

Morning, everyone!

TOD: When I was studying in Israel, I got "adopted" by one of my school's caretakers, an Iranian woman with a large family. She made a chicken-and-herb stew served over rice that was as delicious as anything I'd ever tasted. 15 years later, at a potluck meal, a friend's neighbor handed me a plate of stew, and with one taste, it became Proust's madeline: I was transported back to my yeshiva days. I've since learned that the stew is called Ghormeh Sabzi, and one of these centuries I'll try making my own.

A lot of these teams are really growing on me. I was really sad with the bottom 2 teams last night. I really liked them both. I felt bad that the team that got eliminated could not sled. They were actually really growing on me. But to me there downfall was they were at the airport for 3 hours and never checked on another flight. Big mistake!  The one team i really don't like are the tattooed couple. They were good at sledding. But they are lacking in skills.  The father/son are really growing on me. They are so sweet. I like them.  I know they probably won't go far because the father has so many physical limitations. But they seem so read and nice.  I also enjoy the home shoppers. And the doctors. The father/daughter team is doing much better than i thought.  I hope the volleyball girls can bounce back. I am not crazy about the two dating couples. The one that needed their expresspass is going downhill fast.  And the one with the girl who could not go down  on the sled ... well that guy is getting on my nevers. He goes from yelling to being the sweetest supportive guy ever. It is very confusing!    Good show last night though. And great seeing that ice hotel. Very cool.

I had a drip in my throat last night and could not fall asleep. So i turned on the food network. Not sure how i missed this. But season 2 of The Next Iron Chef (that was on in the US last year) was premiering.  I don't know why they waited a whole year to show it. But we aren't even getting this season of Project Runway till probably January (I know it ends next week so hopefully i'll just try not to find out who wins, not that i know any of the contestants yet).

YIKES!  We've just had some excitement here - the crew that mows our lawn ran over the sign we had in our yard promoting the county park levy and a piece of the metal support hit our living room picture window.  Fortunately, it's a double pane and only the outside glass was broken.  The boss will be over later to look at it.

I was raised in a household where we were taught to eat everything on our plates (it did not hold me well as a restaurant critic years later where portion control is everything). We were also taught to be adventurous eaters and try a little bit of everything. So, I grew up eating and drinking just about anything set before me or that sounded good. It could have been Indian or Moroccan or Peruvian.

As a result, there are few "exotics" for me, just one melting pot of comfort foods, and I dine out on ethnic foods a lot because they are not what I cook. That said, some Persian dishes, such as gormeh sabzi, as Elan mentioned, or fesenjen, chicken with a walnut-pomegranate sauce, still fill me with a kind of new-found wonder. They are not spicy (unless asked for) and some are borderline too sweet, but they are all silky and seductive.

I don't think there is any exotic dish I would not try. I have never been a picky eater. Even as a child I ate everything and anything.

One of my favorite things to do is try different and varied ethnic dishes...as most know I love Indian food. My Iraqi friends have treated me to many delicious dishes. My trip to Japan 20 years ago was full of tasty treats (much of it I still don't know what it was).

There are only a few items I am not crazy about...I will eat it, but I won't go out of my way for it....Lima Beans....raw onions...

Wasabi is something that I avoid...same with Horseradish...those two I do dislike. Also, if food is overly salty...that is not so good...I want to taste the food, not the salt.

BK, I suggest going to Indian buffet...taking a little of everything, then going back for more of what you like. Butter Chicken you would like.

The green stuff was likely Saag...my favorite...especially with Lamb or chicken or just chunks of cheese. And buffets are usually not very spicy, although you can add spice if you like.

Here's a story I wrote recently about a Pachamanca, which is a Peruvian thanksgiving feast that's cooked by burying the foods (ribs, chicken, lamb, potatoes, sweet potatoes and more) in an underground oven. Exotic, yet sooooo comforting. Best sweet potatoes I've ever eaten. They needed no salt or butter. The chicken and ribs practically fell off the bone.

TOD:

As odd as it may seem to some, I don't do much "adventurous" eating -- which means I don't indulge in eating things that don't appeal to my sense of what would be "tasty".

I've eaten many Chinese dishes of which I knew nothing...and lots of Indian dishes with only the assurance that my dinner partners had tastes for excellent foods, and they've never let me down.  I've enjoyed many such meals and have never been put off when I learned what I was eating...including goat meat.

The most adventurous I've been in terms of eating what did NOT seem appetizing was a plate of sushi (that did not include California roll).

And while it was not as disgusting as I feared, it also had no taste other than the various hot/spicy sauces in which the raw fish was dipped.

The taste of the raw fish was unremarkable and the sauces were not sufficient to entice me back to a sushi meal.

T.O.D.

I used to be a far more adventurous eater than I am now.  I can usually find something tempting on just about any menu, and I have found that most waitstaff are more than willing to steer you towards something that you enjoy.

These days, I tend to stick to more standard fare.

Had a good CR session and a smooth shopping trip.  When I got home the window repair guy had been here to measure and tell Richard that they'll be back in the next couple of days to replace the glass.  All in all, the mowing company probably lost money at our house today, between the window and the mower tire.

In some good neighborhood news, the house across the street that's been for sale since spring now has a SOLD sign on it.  The last couple of houses on our street that were up for sale eventually had to be rented and we were afraid that was becoming a trend.

PWOJECT WUNWAY

SPOILAGE

This past Thursday's episode of "Project Runway" was nervewracking and, ultimately, WHOLLY SATISFYING for me.   The challenge was issued by the Mayor of New York City who offered the remaining designers carte blanche to use any city landmark as inspiration for the next design.

I hoped that someone would choose Radio City Music Hall (I envisioned a full-length coat inspired by the geometry and color of the marquee/front of the building) and a separate garment inspired by the interior -- colors of the curtains, lights, etc.  But, alas....

Michael C. went for Lady Liberty, which I thought was a bit predictable and possibly too literal an inspiration.   Mondo and April chose the Brooklyn Bridge...Mondo for optical illusions he discovered when looking through the cabling at a certain angle...and April for...who knows what reason...I don't recall, possibly because I never saw much of it in the garment.  I think it was for angles.  Andy claimed Central Park, and Gretchen took the lower East Side.  It was clear from Gretchen's commentary that she was ignoring the challenge concept of "inspiration" and chose to design something less "inspired by" (and not landmark-related at all) and more what she thought women on the lower East Side might wear.

If anyone appeared to be in trouble, it seemed me that Michael C. might be the one.  Tim's assessment of what he was doing (two ideas at that time) were that one concept (he couldn’t make it work) was a ghastly disaster and that the other wasn't ambitious enough...and to look at what his fellow designers were doing.

Mondo was back in with the oversized houndstooth, Gretchen was making a leather jacket and “separates”, April was again doing black (ALL her outfits have been black) with asymmetrical patterns and odd cutouts, and Andy was doing a black hoochi dress which, as Gretchen called it, was a “madame” dress.   Only on the back could you see any “Central Park” influence…and the back straps looked like tree branches.

On the runway, the judges asked Mondo about his garment.  All but Heidi absolutely loved his look.  Heidi wasn’t thrilled at seeing black oversized houndstooth again, but she loved the cut/styling of the garment.  Michael Kors was complimentary that Mondo had gone the extra step of eschewing (gesundheit!) colors in favor of black and white and praised him for showing his range during the competition. During the judges' conference, Sirriano made a few remarks gestures about Mondo's personal appearance...as if Mondo were a bit chi-chi or something..he then deflected that critique to the garment, but the other judges poo-poohed him.  I'm thinking Sirriano -- the Queen of Chi-Chi -- was feeling "threatened"! Next up, IIRC, was Andy, who was taken to task for his stated inspiration and the absence of any sign of said inspiration in another short “warrior princess” outfit.  I’m guessing it’s because it was the final challenge because they then complimented him profusely on the look of the black outfit (shiny fabric making it look “wet” in places) and the exquisite tailoring apparent.  Michael C, I believe, was up next, and he told the judges that the Statue of Liberty was his inspiration, that he wanted a dress with draping that echoed that on the famous statue without being literal, that he wanted a showstopper.  Michael Kors told him that “showstopper” was what he delivered.  The judges were EFFUSIVE in their praise of the dress…from Michael’s draping to the high slit in the front to the low (but decent) back.  Michael was thrilled.  Gretchen and April seemed to turn into stone.   Guest judge Christian Sirriano said it may have been slit too high, but Heidi said, No.  She wants to wear that dress.

April and Gretchen, for what it’s worth, were lambasted by the judges.  Gretchen was told she apparently had run out of steam and that her garments looked cheap. They didn't rag her about not using a landmark for inspiration.  Gretchen, like April, dissolved into tears and made excuses about how the challenges robbed her of creative energy, etc., etc.   April was told she had delivered just another version of the same old dress she’d been flogging in several competitions.  During the workrooms, both thought they’d be in the top three.

In past years, they’ve named two designers as being “in” for Fashion Week.  Two other designers were told they’d compete for the third slot.   This year, they’ve been told that four of them would all compete for three slots, meaning each will show a look or three in a pre-Fashion Week runway throwdown.

After the judges conferred, Michael C. was told his dress was “the dress of the evening” and that he was “in.”  Then came Mondo, and then Andy, each one “in”.  The choice between April and Gretchen seemed, to me, a no-brainer.  And, indeed, Gretchen was “in” and April was devastated.  The end.

I really don't think I need to sanitize the whole house, Ricky has only been in the bedroom.  I've been using the cream for a week and it doesn't seem to be getting better, it's a little worse today.  I've read a lot about the baths and decided to try it.  The vet wants him to take meds, I don't really want to do that, but we'll see how it goes.  I am going to clean one room a night.  I'm not going to necessarily use bleach on every surface, but I will deep clean.  I figure it can't hurt.

Thanks TCB.  I'm just glad I adopted him.  He would either be treated in an isolation room in the back of the shelter and be alone or who knows...at least this way he has a nice room to hang out in and attention from me. Not as much as I'd like to give him, but as much as I can. And a forever home.  I'm letting the vet do the baths so I can be the rescuer and not the torturer

I loved Maui. A fellow unemployed friend today said he's up for a job at an airport in Hawaii. Very envious.

Using the computer is difficult with these glasses. I'll have to limit my time tomorrow, plus I need to get ready for my trip to Chicago on Friday.  Sherlock will be happy to have Keith home with him.

I'm doing the lime sulfur because it kills the spores.  After a week or two he'll be able to play with the girls, even as the treatment continues

Had a great day in court today.  Great result for my client.  The victim's crazy mother was mad because my client didn't apologize to her.  He didn't do anything to her and she beat the crap out of him.  He did victimize her daughter and apologized for that.  This woman has been harassing my client's family.  She stood up and yelled at the judge.  We asked for extra security (thank goodness) and everyone was wanded (no metal detector in the courthouse) the deputies even asked if they could walk my client's family to their car and told them to call the police if she comes anywhere near

It's now time for me to leave work.  At lunch today, I got a new cable modem for my computer, so hopefully that'll fix some/all(?) of the problems that I had last night.  We'll see.

Until later!

Cilla, remember that the spores will float around like dust. Sometimes it won't matter how careful you are, the spores will get around anyhow.

I remember one foster having ringworm. I was SO careful. I caged them all separately and I wore a hospital gown and changed it and washed my hands after handling each kitten. It spread anyway. So I let them all out of their cages. And BOY, did they all PLAY and PLAY and PLAY. They were so happy!

In other bad news....Johnny Sheffield, Boy from the old Tarzan movies, passed away on Friday of a heart attack in Chula Vista, California.

He evidently was was trimming a tree and fell off the ladder. He later that day suffered a heart attack.

Found "Love Never Dies" at a used CD shop today along with the New York City Opera version of "Candide." I resisted buying the latter, because I have too many recordings of "Candide," but I finally decided to grab it because I saw the production.

I had the funniest thing happen this morning.  Somehow my radio alarm went from a rock station to a religious station.  Probably when I was cleaning or moving something, anyway,  the alarm went off and I was still mostly asleep.  I was dreaming that there was a minister giving a sermon, or a professor giving a speech and the people in the room got very bored and as he was talking eveyone started leaving.  Then I woke up and realized the voice was the guy giving a sermon on the radio.

Back from the commentary session, which was really fun!  Then we all hung out for a while and now I am home.  Too late to start a motion picture so I'll just play on the Internet.  I got some kind of weird error page when I tried to come directly to the board - I went to the notes and entered at the click-through at the end and that was fine.

Night everyone, I need to be in the car driving by 5:30AM, to get new tires.   The noise I've been hearing while driving has been the sound of the road on bald tires.   Who knew ?   Glad the guys at Toyota are used to my just driving in and saying "I hear a noise".  :-[
