Title: THE AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL
Post by: bk on October 26, 2010, 12:25:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were award-winning (I gave them Best Notes for Tuesday, October 26, 2010), and now it is time for you to post until the award-winning cows come home.

I've only seen "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" with a participating audience once and I certainly enjoyed it, but I don't get the obsession with it.  I've seen several local productions of the stage show that were very well done.  I love live theater and have found the stage shows much more enjoyable than the movie...which I like, but just don't love.

TOD: "The Ref," "Evil Dead 2," "The Big Lebowski," "Freaks," "Female Trouble," "Toxic Avenger," "Clerks" and the original "Hairspray."

I always enjoyed "Rocky Horror" when there was the audience participation. I don't think it works otherwise. It's not a movie to sit down and watch. But when "Time Warp" strikes up, I'm on my feet and taking "a jump to the left" with the rest of the crowd.

Am off far too early in the morning to do some extra work on a movie starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine. It's a funeral scene, so I doubt MacLaine will be there, since it's her character who dies. But it's a day's work, so I'm there.

Finished my application for grad school yesterday. Now I just have to wait to hear if I got in. Don't know which is worse, the wait or the two dreadful essays I had to write. One was on the subject of education as an act of freedom. It was supposed to be 750-1,000 words long. Mine was 758. Finishing it was like that book report scene in "Charlie Brown," where Lucy fills out her word count by writing it was "a very, very, very, very, very, very ..." stupid story. (I think it was Lucy. It's a little early still.)

Good morning, all! I slept horribly, knowing that I had to be up by 6am for the trek to the NYU Dental Clinic. I was out of bed at 5:40; my late father, who rose every day at 5:30 would be so proud of me.

So, after the clinic, I've got a stop at the McGlinnventory, then I have a meeting at the Frank Loesser office in midtown about a critical edition of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. I have no idea what this means, or who the editor is, so it will all be interesting information to me. I suppose I'm to represent the muscal side for the Loesser office, but then, I may only be there to offer what I know to the editor. I'm fine with whatever.

I got an email from Ann Hampton Callaway about some possible work, so I may be talking to her when I get home. I've got a couple of items to throw into Carton 8 of this shipment I'm preparing for Miami University Library before I ship on Friday, and that's my day. I'm waiting for payments for three different invoices, and I'll be happy when the money arrives in the mail, so I hope at least one of them shows up today.

I sent E&T DR Jed an ecard for his birthday and I wish he'd get his butt back to HHW!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday, DR Jed! Did you read what I wrote about you? Come back, all is forgiven !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As to THE BRAIN, doesn't class always rise? Well, I guess there's Sarah Palin to prove me wrong.

As for cult films I really don't know from them

There are obscure films to others that I have seen and enjoyed. My film is Arnold.

Here is a clip that sets up the plot perfectly. It also mixes in a little of "And Then There Was None"

I was a rather young kid when my parents sent me to Europe for the summer, utilizing my sister, who lived in Germany, as home base.  She and my parents chipped in for a trip over to London, where I flew into Heathrow on a tiny commuter prop plane that was really scary.  Anyhoo, I still remember taking one of those endless escalators down to the subway and seeing a huge, outre poster for something called THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW.  Things were different back in the 70s, lest that not be clear, and I was a little freaked out by the sight of a man in a bustier and panty hose.  :)

I liked DOING the Rocky Horror Show better than watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show.....although with the right audience, it can be most entertaining.

I have heard the music for the GLEE production of RHS, and am most distressed.....Mercedes plays Frank from "Sensational" Transylvania......

I played Brad Majors for two years (!) when THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW played in Pittsburgh in the late 1970s.  The benefits were that I didn't pay admission to any movie theater in that particular chain, being interviewed on local and national television (the first incarnation of CBS' People Magazine Show) and attending conventions in New York.
The downside, of course, was the floor show and its choreography and costume.

When all is said and done, I like the music from ROCKY HORROR more than I like the film.
(I wrote a review of the original dvd release, which can be found here:  http://www.dvdlaunch.com/rockyhorror.html )

I don't like the menu on the new blu-ray either, BK!  It took me forever to get to the special features!

As for the TOD:
FREAKS
ZERO PATIENCE
MIDNIGHT ALLEY
AFTER THE FOX
THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL
CAFE FLESH

I owe my marriage in part to the RHPS, so I'm required by law to consider it my favorite cult film. I can't imagine enjoying the movie or show by itself, but I always got a kick out of the soundtrack and the comraderie of a good floor show performance and clever audience lines. I will also forever cherish the night at Eighty-Eights that I made Rochelle Seldin (our favorite singing waitress) drop her drink tray in laughter by doing the full Columbia solo (complete with choreography) during "Time Warp." *sigh* good times, good times...

THIS IS NOT A TEST (1962)

FREAKS (1932)

ZIMBO (1958); ZIMBO COME TO TOWN (1960); ZIMBO FINDS A SON (1963).

Back from my doctor's appointment, where he confirmed that I have costochondritis, a muscle strain that produces chest pain.  Nothing to worry about, but he told me not to do those overhead hand-weight reps that I tried last week.  They were also able to do the blood test that the lab could not do yesterday.

We're all home waiting for the sirens to go off telling us to go to the basement...

Re the Encores awards sharing the wealth - they're not a patch on the butt cheeks of the various and sundried Los Angeles theater awards - best this, best that, best supporting, best ensemble, best debut, best ensemble of an ensemble, best supporting of a supporting and on it goes - I always say it's almost impossible NOT to get nominated for something, and yet I have done that repeatedly and so have the great casts of my shows.  However, it's pretty simple - in order to be nominated, for example, for an Ovation award, actual Ovation voters (most are actors and writer and directors - not necessarily working) must see your show and, in my case, they usually don't, although why enough Ovation voters wouldn't have seen What If is a mystery to me - because I will never understand how that show's cast could not have received a single nomination for anything - they were really good and the nominees and winners that year were the usual crop of suspects who are always nominated.  For me, the most amusing wins for the Ovation awards are choreography - usually given to one of the CLO shows and usually to a person who has simply recreated the original production's choreography - that year it was The Will Rogers Follies - where someone got the award for staging Tommy Tune and Jeff Calhoun's work.

It's been along day and I am very tired. The bad news is no paymentys in the mail, which bums me out, but the good news is I received my copy of the Stephen Sondheim book today. I'll sit in bed tonight and read it and most likely be unconscious by 9:30 or so.

The meeting at the Loesser office was interesting: a gentleman wants to reconstruct and publish the original show that opened out of town, before Art Lund replaced Morley Meredith, Kermit Bloomgarden made Frank turn a lot of recitative into spoken dialogue, and Act One scene Two was drastically revised. I will be helping to put the materials together. Tomorrow I go to MTI to check out the new orchestra parts for my last work on the show in its final shape.

Helper is gone and I'm already exhausted but everything in stage one is pretty much done, which means I can begin stage two, which she's not involved in.  But for now, I must eat.  I'm thinking I deserve a nice Hugo's lunch.

I have no time just now to read the posts, but I wish to say

CONGRATS to BK, DAVID WECHTER, and all involved in the Indy production of THE BRAIN for all the awards! I am not at all surprised that you won, but happy just the same.

Weather watch here is for rough winds and thunderstorms for the next half hour, we're on the lower edge of the front that's coming through.  Our skies are dark and we've had a few raindrops, but just before that started I managed to get a cemetery walk in.

In either 1975 or 1976, don't remember the year but it was in the summer and I was visiting my sister at Iowa State.  Anyway, she was in a summer theater company and wanted to hang out with her boyfriend after the show so she told me to get in this car with 4 or 5 of the guys from the companuy and go to Des Moines to see a midnight movie.  It's about 30 miles away from there and I was only 14 or 15, but the 70s were a different time.  Of course at the time I didn't know the guys were more interested in each other, but I digress.  So I jumped in the car and they told me when we get there, just chant "lips! lips! lips!" until the show starts.   There was a little recreational beverage and other imbibing on the way.  Anyway, we arrived and went in and I had no idea what to expect.   I had a blast!!  Back then the things people shouted and sang fit into the story and it was really cool.

Later I went a number of times in college with friends who dressed the parts and introduced a few people to it.  The last time I saw it in a theater was in the 80s.  The people yelled things that didn't even make sense.  Lots of swearing and I don't know, it just ruined the whole experience.

Some friends and I rented it a couple times and did the whole acting thing (sans rice and water) at someone's house.  It was really pretty fun and was the first time I actually heard the whole movie.

I loved Rocky Horror. I think I have a DVD of it somewhere. It's playing at the Orpheum this year on Halloween, but you can't bring props.  I haven't decided if I'll go

I never considered myself a fan of cult films, but I loved TFNM. I also loved KING OF HEARTS, but never thought of it as "cult." I'm surprised so many folks are familiar with FREAKS. I suspect the definition of "cult" is largely in the eye of the beholder--or something like that.

Michael S., I apologize if that came out sounding snarky.  I guess I am half asleep this evening, but for some reason I was thinking that you were currently in Canada, instead of Florida.  When I saw your post I was thinking how strange that they would rename the film for Canadian audiences.

Watching a motion picture.  Interesting orders today - several Evening Primrose orders - which is, I think, all because in the booklet that is in the DVD package they mention that the soundtrack's official release is on Kritzerland.  Note the use of the word "official" which finally puts the lie to Sony saying their release was the official first release of the four song soundtrack cues - I said it then and I say it now - close, but no ceegar.

Callie and Ricky were nose to nose in the hallway tonight. Literally, lol. Ricky came out of his room and just invaded Callies space...Marched right up to her and touched noses.  She sort of stood back in shock, but didn't make a peep.  Boo on the other hand refused to come upstairs for introductions and stood in the diningroom meowing like someone was pulling her tail.   I waited until after she stopped to go down.  Pretty funny

I think it's too early for them to be together too much.  He's not as contagious, but isn't totally safe to be around them yet.  So, I figured just a little hello in the hall would be good.  He sniffed around while Callie watched him.   Then she went downstairs and I put him back in his room.   I'm pleased

Sorry I've been E&T---I went to Charleston on Sunday to screen our film at the very first Charleston Jewish Film Festival. It was a very nice event, most people seemed to be from the same synagogue and knew everyone else. I was one of the youngest people there! I could tell from the guys talking around me that they would really like the film because they knew almost everyone who would be in it.

But, the DVD crapped out about a half hour in. They started it again and it messed up at the same place, so I deployed my own copy, which did well for awhile but then frozen for a bit. Since the DVD has no chapters yet, they had to keep starting from the beginning and fast-forwarding to where it messed up. I felt so bad; the people had done so much work to create this event. They did their due diligence and watched the DVD at home and then tested it at the theatre but I don't think they went that far into it.

I had a sense that things might be difficult when they started the film and the image (it was a rear screen projector) was flipped, and they had to stop and redo the settings. Seems like they would have noticed that!

The theater was a beautifully restored 1927 little movie palace gem, but the screen was a portable one, probably about 10 feet wide. I was surprised that they didn't have a screen here. I guess the DVD player was persickety, since both DVDs had problems and they were made at different times with different companies. Very painful screening to me, but the people were good sports (we were in the south, after all) and even sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" after the 3rd time it froze.

Sorry the screening had a glitch, DR Edi, but it also sounds like they loved the film.   I can't wait to see it.

We also had problems with the DVD player in Augusta and ended up having to show it on a computer, wich couldn't deal with anamorphic and everyone looked stretched.

Peter went to a screening in Baltimore last night, and although the disc played fine, they didn't set up the anamorphic so this also looked stretched.

How hard is it to check this stuff beforehand?

I guess until we have a DVD professionally mastered, we may continue to run into this with cheaper players.
The blu-ray discs, which were mastered (very expensive!) have had no problems at all, AFAIK.

DR Ben, I don't have the screening times yet, but I imagine that we'll be outside before the 7-ish show, do a Q&A after that, greet whoever we know who comes to the 9ish screening, and then go for a bite (Good Stuff, maybe?) and try to get back for a Q&A afterwards, and then go out afterwards.

I felt the same way about the RHS GLEE, DR CILLA LIZ.....I didn't hate it, and they actually did an okay job getting the songs and characters in....except for Mercedes as Frank....no WAY!

I would guess Fox Standards & Practices had a lot to do with changed lyrics, which we were supposed to believe Will had a hand in.....okay.

And some of the changes in the choreography were wacky....but all in all - NOT the disaster I thought it might be.

I had planned to hang out in Charleston for awhile before driving back, but I had a call from a friend (the producer who originated the Mercer film with me and Greg before others became involved) and she and her husband (president of the Mercer Foundation board) were in Savannah. Ken, our writer on the film (before they threw out his script!) and his wonderful wife Ann were over from the UK so I decided to make a detour to Savannah before coming home.

Turned out other friends were in town: Charlie P. the head of Frank Sinatra Enterprises and his friend Nick, who produces a lot of the road shows (didn't get his last name) so I got to spend quite a lot of time catching up with them. They were involved in the recent broadway show and had a lot of interesting observations about their famous choreographer. We talked a lot about different shows we'd seen (I guess Nick is involved with road tours like Legally Blonde, Cats, Phantom, etc.)

Anyway, they are working on developing a new show that should be of interest to people here, involving the music of a songwriter that many of us like. :-)

I also reconnected with the wife of a producer I may be working with in the future, and they will be going to see J and B in LA, since the theatre is right around the corner from them.

We all had dinner later at a favorite Greek place so I got to have my favorite dish:horta!!

So it was a very productive and yummy side trip. A little tough driving home so late (I got home @ 1:30) but I missed traffic and a thunderstorm, so it was a good thing I waited.

Night JRand.  Page 8 is a good thing

agreed.

I went to BLockbuster today and bought RED CLIFF PT 1 and 2 - the International Version.....I have seen the original, and I know the International wasn't spoken of too highly, but they were on sale....and I liked it....so we shall see.

Also got Young Victoria, which was okay.....but there surely had to be more drama in her life than we saw in those 2 hours...although I still think it's interesting that her married name was Saxe-Coberg Gotha.....and she was in fact the last of the House of Hanover....  Her grandson George V deftly changed the surname to Windsor, to get away from the German-Belgian roots....and that is the name of the Royal family today.....

I went to Decatur CD tonight, where Susan Cowsill was doing an in-store appearance before she played here at Eddie's Attic.

I bought her CD--it's really good! But the songs made me sad (not Justin Beiber sad, but still sad) because a lot of the songs are about personal tragedies---losing everything in Katrina, brother Barry drowning in Katrina and not finding his body until much later, and the day of his memorial service another brother, Billy, died. But she really has a good voice, much better than when she was a kid!

I didn't like the way they changed the lyrics to some of the Rocky Horror songs in Glee

I didn't mind so much, but I figured that it was because they're doing a production in a high school...Will said that he was making changes, and the first thing that I thought of was if that would be allowed by the rights holders. ;)

Dear Jose, anything that brings cash at the recycling centers.   And identity theft, one guy only collects mail and personal papers.  They arrested someone at the local mall parking lot after he purchased something like 4,000 dollars worth of gift cards from Target.  When they searched his van parked in the lot he had dozens of fake identity's.  It's quite a money making racket.

Well, I need to go to bed now.  Since I've been getting to work earlier than I have in the past, one would reason that I would be getting to bed earlier so that I could wake up earlier...however, I have not been getting to bed earlier on a regular basis.  I need to change that.  And I need to get to work very early on Friday because we're interviewing people to replace me!  We start at 9:00 a.m., and that's earlier than I have been getting to work.  So, it's off to bed I go.

Good night...whoever! 8)
