Title: THE ARMCHAIR EXPERTS
Post by: bk on October 27, 2010, 12:34:34 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were expert but sans armchair, and now it is time for you to post until the armchair cows come home.

I misnamed the new Clint Eastwood movie. Somehow Hereafter just couldn't stick in my mind. I was calling it different names all day. Actually Afterlife is not such a bad name for it

Good morning, all! I have to be at my doctor this morning for blood tests at 8:45, so I'll soon be leaving for my walk up Broadway.

After that, I have a trip to the post office and a period of time at MTI looking over the final versions of the orchestra parts for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. And, hopefully, that's it for today!

This evening Richard and I are going to Miami University-Hamilton for the awarding of the John E. Dolibois History Prize (http://www.ham.muohio.edu/colliganproject/dolibois_prize/index.htm) to Dr. Allan Millett, a military historian from Ohio State University.  We always enjoy the Colligan Project events.

Morning, all, and the requisite "phooey!" to the armchair experts.

Back to the Future is, indeed, a great classic, and 3 an underappreciated sequel (2 was just okay, by my reckoning). Christopher Lloyd's dialogue is just first rate ("My boy, I'm sure that in 1985, plutonium is sold in every corner drugstore; here in 1955, it's a little hard to come by."), and I can even forgive the mispronounciation of "gigawatts"

I must take umbrage at your comments about Back to the Future, at least with regard to my review.  First of all, I know for a fact mine was the first detailed review on the internet.  Here it is:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Back-to-the-Future-25th-Anniversary-Trilogy-Blu-ray/9152/

Please tell me where I "begrudgingly" admit anything about the image quality, which I clearly state is the best this franchise has ever looked.   How could I be scared about what I read when mine was the first review out there?   I actually took a lot of heat from readers on this review on the main thread at blu-ray.com, after other (complaining) reviews appeared, and I still stand by my statements.

In doing a cursory look at the internets, the only other source besides blu-ray.com that I would ever bother "believing," AVS, also gave the films pretty much sterling reviews for image quality.

Well, FINISHING THE HAT was waiting for me when I got home last night.  But I will not be reading this book on the train--it's a big one!  Instead, I'll keep in on my night stand to peruse at bedtime.

Now to figure out how to get Mr. Sondheim to autograph it...

DR Edisaurus, you will be happy to know that PUSS N BOOTS, and several of the other K. Gordon Murray English dubbed releases of Mexican films are considered cult classics.

Here is a website devoted to K. Gordon Murray and his film releases:

I continue to be amazed by what I read about this Back To The Future comment.  I keep hearing stuff about all the "edge halos" - I guess I must just not be sophisticated enough to see them.  Or, they're not there and people are seeing what they've been told to see, want to see, or are blaming thing inherent in the photography as other things.  I honestly don't know.  One person says the transfer doesn't look like today's film standards - could that be because the film wasn't made - today?  The same person said that it looked better in the cinema when he saw this transfer a couple of weeks ago - I'm quite certain they were showing this transfer, so why would that be?  Perhaps because of this fellow's home theater system?

One reviewer actually says that the coat Marty wears when playing Johnny B. Goode at the prom has problems with what is now called moire patterns - then he immediately admits that that could be a problem with his TV - it is.  There are no problems with the coat and that, in fact, surprised me, since several blu-ray transfers still seem to be plagued by that sort of thing.

Yesterday, I spent about 15 hours driving to the set and working as an extra on "Bernie." It was the first time I've ever been paid to go to church.

We spent all day filming four scenes in the First United Methodist Church of Bastrop, which is in a tiny town about 95 minutes from San Antonio.

During the four scenes, we saw a funeral, then we saw Jack Black sing three hymns. During the last one, the audience got to sing "Blessed Assurance" along with Mr. Black while Shirley MacLaine made evil eyes at someone across the aisle.

Don't know if I made it into any scenes or not, but for one I was two rows behind MacLaine, during a funeral, while Black sang "Just As I Am."

During the last scene, she was in the next pew over. Really charming and spent time talking with some of the children who were extras. She was also funny in her way, while Black was funny in his.

The extra who was playing Shirley MacLaine's son in the film introduced himself to her as Fran Kublick's oldest son. Then he had to explain who Fran Kublick was, which prompted her to say, "That movie's so old. Good, but old."

She also had some fun bits between takes when she was reading on her Kindle about marijuana sales in California. She and Jack Black did a few riffs back and forth on that.

I sure do wish that Universal would get around to releasing their 1940s musicals (and musical mysteries...those that I have seen are so much fun!

As expected, i did NOT win the Ebb award, but with hearing the work of some of the people who made the final list of eight, I'm kind of thrilled that i made it to that level.

I can't say who the winner is because that won't be revealed until the season finale, i mean until the Ebb people do their press release -  but it's someone really great (who's done an album with BK), and I was at first surprised that he's still considered an up-and-coming writer, as opposed to someone who's already made it.  But a terrific choice, since he obviously met the criteria from a commercial point of view.

DR Vixmom I'm very pleased your mother continues to improve.

I haven't read "Me & Emma" by Elizabeth Flock?  After reading far too many, our club tries to avoid stories about dysfunctional families.  If you read the book please let me know if you like it.

Enjoyed it very much....very sad....so many of the people had been scheduled to go on other ships - the Majestic and Oceanic - but because of the coal strike, they were transferred to the Titanic.

DR JANE - and others - if you have a current eyeglass prescription, you can get a nice pair of glasses for a reasonable price here.

The glasses have measurements, and you can measure a current pair for a good fit for your face....I usually get the "medium" size glasses.

Back from finessing mixes - got seven tracks done, thirteen to go.  I'm glad I played tough on this one and made the composer go back and record some vocals again, plus replace the entire original guitar track with one by our very own Mr. Grant Geissman.  It made all the difference in the world and now it's starting to sound very clean and punchy and like a - well - Kimmel album.

I just got back form a get together of folks raising money for our neighborhood park. They had a good idea this year; they made a pet calendar. Everyone bought space for their pet's picture, and there are also ads in it, and then they sell it for $20. I don't know how I'll use it since it's pretty big, but all 4 of my kitties are in there and it was fun to look at all the pictures of pets I see being walked and learning their named.

They were probably used on the Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic.  White Star never put the actual name of the ship on their china or sivlerware, prefering to use WHITE STAR LINE and the emblem.

I thought this was supposed to be Shirley MacLaine's funeral?

I thought it was, too. Turns out to be her husband's and it is at the funeral that she meets Jack Black's character.

Odd day. Haven't caught with anything (except for the readings here), and I kind of like not caring about how far behind I am.

Had a lousy dinner at a new restaurant. Burger was pre-formed, probably once frozen patty with next to no flavor. The cream of asparagus soup was made from canned asparagus. And I like ordering cole slaw because it's usually lower carb than most items, but this version made up for that by adding corn (!) to the mix.

Might not be around too much.  Making progress on paying for my car repairs.  Sold the IMAC and working on having the old IBM laptop fixed.  Until then it's internet at the local library down the street.   Might have to cancel the internet at home (and the phone) and just stick to a cell phone and wireless internet if the old IBM can get access.  Yea for the computers at the library (which might be more fun anyway).        I seriously need to pay down my credit cards.  Or I'm really going to be in trouble next year.

THINGS ALWAYS LOOK UP.  ;D

I think I know from FJL's description who won the Ebb award.  And I think I know from elmore's description who has been offered the role of Ben.

Finished with my viewing a couple of hours ago, did a mile and a half jog and my calf seemed to be fine and then wrote my liner notes, which are now thankfully finished.

I'm going to shave now so I don't have to in the morning - CDs and helper arrive very early and then I have a noon lunch so it's going to be very hectic.
