Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with both ennui and Anouilh, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently filled with ennui and other edibles.

ASK BK

What is DNR?

And what do they mean by grain reduction, edge halo, AVC Code  and all the other terms they use when they review a film?

Does the casual viewer really notice these things?

And whats the point of buying the Blu Ray and getting a DVD version too?

I read a quote today - the logic of which entirely eludes me.

The speaker said that she voted for Obama, and she supports Obama , but she voted Republican this time to send the message that he had to do a better job

To me that is like hiring some guys to dig a hole and then when they are halfway through saying "You didn't dig deep enough , so I am getting rid of your helper and replacing him with someone who will attempt to fill the hole at the same time you are attempting to dig deeper"

I could understand if she said she was deeply disappointed by Obama and now thinks the republicans can do a better job - but to say you support someone but think they should have accomplished More and then to "punish" them by making it harder for him to accomplish anything --- I just don't get it

maybe I am just dumb

Good morning, all! I had a long dream about the dead last night: I was on some university campus filled with gothic architecture, I was driving on the sidewalk at one point, I visited my dad whose kitchen sink needed Drano, I saw an old friend, Jesuit priest Gary Siebert, and we went to a house owned by my late friend Thelma Lehmkuhl, and then when I was packing to leave, instead of saying goodbye to my dad, I was saying goodbye to Maurice Chevalier and Benjamin Britten! After that, I lay awake from about 5:30 to 6:30 when the alarm went off. I was surprised by Gary Siebert's appearance; the last tiem I saw him, he was officiating at a memorial service for Ricky Ian Gordon's boyfriend Jeffrey.

I must say, I am not as unhappy about the election as I thought I would be. I knew the Democrats would be pummeled, but it doesn't seem the bloodbath I feared it wold be. Unfortunately, a lot of stupid people voted a lot of stupider people "just like us" into power and I find that the saddest thing of all.

Today, Im venturing out to deal with Music Theatre International and the new orchestra parts for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. I need to track down a UPS package that was supposedly delivered yesterday; I hope the super has it. I've got some tidying and vacuuming to do around the apartment, and that's my day.

First thing, coffee.

I'm going to try to see the movie another time, when the theatre will be less crowded, I found the last two times I was there that I've physically outgrown the seats and I literally had to spill over into the next seats - both ways!!!

But I'd love to join you for dinner at 8:30 if that's OK.

First run with orchestra - almost a success.  That scene before the shooting is a bear and I think we were all nervous and our Joe raced through it which of course threw all our timings off.  The Car Chase music was great, until I screwed up the timing toward the end and we almost fell apart.  And of course, the title number - which is going well, is still a little laborious.  The tech needs to get their collective heads out of their "you know whats" and step it up, or I'm going to raise hell.  Things keep getting worse instead of better - on the tech side, that is.

Not to steal BK's thunder, but since I make part of my living tossing around Shayne's verbiage:

DNR=digital noise reduction.  When elements are artificially sharpened for high definition, you often get an increase in grain and general "noise," i.e., ugly little particulate matter that makes the image look dirty.  DNR is applied, often egregiously, to smooth out that look.  You can tell if an image has overly aggressive DNR if there's no apparent grain and things like skin pores are non-existent.

AVC is one of three compression codecs used to compress video for Blu-rays.  The others are VC-1 and MPEG-2.  MPEG-2 is the codec utilized for Standard Definition DVDs.  AVC seems to be taking the lead in most recent BDs.

Title: Re: KRITZERLAND AT THE GARDENIA 3
Post by: JMK on November 03, 2010, 08:25:12 AM
In terms of Shayne's other two questions:

Believe me, people notice (or in the case of DNR, think they notice) these things.  Oy, do they notice.

I think the logic behind having Blu-ray/DVD combo packs is so that you can take the DVD version with you in the car, etc., where no one has a Blu-ray player.

Today's Blu-ray brouhaha:  Fremantle Media has reframed the new Blu-ray of 'The World at War' in 16:9 for high definition.  Outrage ensues.

BK is the Gardenia advertising this event to the general public?

The Gardenia doesn't typically do much advertising because it's such a small venue (about 50 seats, as BK mentioned).  They're listed on the Cabaret West Website and they have a monthly flyer that they send out via snail-mail.  That's pretty much it.  The place gets totally packed when someone like Andrea Marcovicci performs, but a lot of other shows are kind of hit-and-miss in terms of attendance.  Cabaret doesn't really have a very big following here in LA, which is why the Cinegrill didn't survive at the Hollywood Roosevelt.  Such noted performers as Debbie Gravitte and Sally Mayes sometimes played to a mostly empty room.  It's tough out here.

Opticals: Any footage that involves duping original footage, i.e. dissolves, fades, main titles, special effects.  Once you dupe original footage you are then generations away and introducing new grain on top of what was already there - depending on the competency of those doing the opticals and the stock used, they can look okay (at best), or really bad.

I have had this feeling that I really needed to get my Cat Sculpture and bring it home.  I don't know why it was suddenly bugging me.   I agreed to leave it outside at the exhibit through October and something just said "GO GET IT NOW".   Anyway, I was trying to find some help to move it and everyone is busy or injured, so I went out this noon to see how heavy it really is and discovered that the ground was dry enough to drive right up to it and by using a rug to prevent scratching, I could get it into the car myself.   So I did!

He is now outside as a protector and welcoming beacon to friends.  I am very pleased.  I don't know why it was bugging me.  I think the idea that it was in a meadow that gets very soggy when wet - and the fact that it's dry right now made me want to get it while I can.

Wednesday afternoon greetings!  So, I was up shortly after Rob left this morning - he was on this way to a hospital in Dayton for a clinical day in Labor & Delivery and I was due at our local hospital for my nutrition class and cardiac rehab.  Rob called a little after 8 to tell us that he'd rear-ended another car on I-75 near downtown Dayton.  Everyone was OK, but Rob was cited and fined (no court appearance - whew!) and his car had to be towed.  Richard retrieved Rob and got him to his destination and then caught up with the car and has spent the day working out the repair details.  He told me to proceed with my plans, which were to take some things out to my Mom when I left the hospital and take her on whatever errands she needed to do.  We picked up some wallpaper she'd ordered, went to lunch at Cracker Barrel (tricky on a cardiac diet...), and went to the garden center.  I just got home to find a message from Richard that he's on his way to pick up Rob and go to rent a car for his use, courtesy of the insurance company.  Definitely a "sandwich generation" day for Richard and me.

The Opera America recital was the music of Paul Moravec, whose opera THE LETTER  was premiered last year at the Santa Fe Opera. We heard three arias from the opera performed by soprano Amy Burton, mezzo  Rosalie Sullivan who's on the Herbert recording project, and baritone Kelly Markgraf, a song cycle performed by Amy, and four songs. They were axccompanied by a piano-violin-cello trio. I'm not sure that I can say, after hearing everything, that I'm a fan of Mr Moravec's music; I would have liked a melody now and then. I can say that the performances were wonderful and that Mr Moravec is a charming host.

The downside of things was the subway. It's an ordeal to stand and an ordeal to sit and then stand quickly when your stop arrives. The leg's too gimpy to cope well in such emergencies.

I have offered to fly out to DC and drive back with Craig.  I think traveling with a trailer and the pets might be easier with a second person, even if that person is me.

Traveling with my medication that needs to be kept cold will be a challenge.  Aside from that I can pack lightly as he will need all the space in the car he can fill.

I doubt he will accept my offer, we shall see.

Ginny, I love it!!

It is much nicer looking than my Forteo carrier, only mine is designed to hold the medication kit inside with an extra compartment for extra needles.  To keep it cold I have two gel packs to freeze until I begin traveling.  It is possible they will be confiscated at security and then I'm in trouble.  How to keep the packs cold while traveling if I can't get a refrigerator in the hotel room is another problem.

Darn, I just remembered I need a letter from the doctor for security.  I had better call tomorrow, just in case.

I've been reading comments about the new Sondheim book, most favorable except for one thing - the thing I pointed out instantly - the teeny-tiny type and the sort of grayish font color.  I find it a chore to read and it makes my eyes VERY tired.

But I found out there's a UK edition of the book - different and, in my opinion, better cover, and apparently the font color is black and much easier to read, and supposedly it's on better paper.  I've ordered a copy.

Craig has declined my offer.  The thought of flying at the moment doesn't appeal to me so I am a bit relieved.  Either my broken glasses are making me slightly ill or I'm beginning to suffer side effects from the meds.  I hope it is due to the glasses.

I forgot to mention Craig has friends to help him with the moving & loading part of the trip.  At night he will have to take his stuff from the car, along with the pets, and move them into the hotel room.  Moving with a cat can be more of a pain than the dog.  The dog likes the car and traveling while the cat hates it.

Much better said than I could in my exhausted state!

Thanks for all the travel vibes which worked splendidly! We got in and dropped our stuff @ 2, then taxi to the Empire State Building, another to Rockefeller Center and then walked to John's Pizzeria and then over to Pee Wee. I'm trying not to make mom walk too much, she thought she would be up for it but she really isn't, so I think the Gray Line tour will actually be a good thing, and cheaper than the cabs!

Pee Wee was GREAT but the theatre was FREEZING! It must have been 50 degrees in there, seriously. It was like the A/C was blowing on high the entire time; everyone complained about it!

I almost brought warmer clothes, but when I do, then I never use them. I wish I had at least brought one warm sweater. Oh well, I've got friends to keep me warm!

When I adopted Bailey, his shelter name was Baxter. Baxter the kitty had a brother named Bailey. Since Greg also had family members near there named Bailey, we adopted his brother's name. (Who probably changed Bailey's name to something else, too!) We have a friend named Baxter, so we thought it would be less confusing. And Bailey seems to fit him perfectly, somehow!

When I moved from Middletown, Ohio, to upstate New York, I got a kitty sedative for Benjamin Stone. It didn't work. He crawled out of his box and decided the best place for him in the rental truck was under the clutch. I drove through the night on a one-lane highway through Pennsylvania. The other lane had been removed. It rained and visibility was next to nothing. And the cat kept getting mad whenever I had to shift gears.
