Well, you've read the notes, the notes told it like it is, and now it is time for you to post until the splendidly splendid cows come home.

Good morning, DR Ben! And good morning, all! My second day of venturing out and about will take me to the McGlinnventory and then to Toyland where I will meet Skip Kennon for some edits on THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER. I hope the day goes well. Yesterday put perhaps too much strain on my leg.

Last night was another Drama Book Shop dream, but I remember very little of it this morning.

Morning! I've been laying on the couch for the last couple of hours and can't sleep but too tired to really get up. Maybe I'll zzz a little more.

Dr Jose, we're doing the Gary Line tour today. We'll be doing the lower loop first. We had no dinner/show plans though. I may go see what's half price. Any thoughts as to something an 80 year old lady who likes American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Regis, Glee, Everybody Loves Raymond and Seinfeld etc. would like?

Naz loves being in the NBC building because he was near his favorite newscaster, Brian somebody!

City Bakery hot chocolate is definitely on the agenda!

Good morning, Elmore!
Boy, the London Terrace apartment is huge by NY stadards! But maybe it's because there's hardly any furniture. I'm sure when the owners get back with their baby it gets much smaller!

Thursday morning greetings!  I'm up early to worry about Rob driving my car to Dayton today.  He wasn't comfortable in the rental, so Richard will drive that and I'll drive his car.

DR Edi - please give my regards to Broadway, too, and also to all the HHW folks you see!  Wish we were there!

I enjoyed FINISHING THE HAT very much......it was all interesting, even with the small type - I had to take off my glasses to read it.

And my favorite sentence (aside from the Hermione Gingold audition story) was:

"And the egos of the professional theater are nothing compared to those lurking in the Groves of Academe."

I don't know the complete schedule but she is still in the show with an odd day off here and there.

Both Elf and Promises have been on TKTS. You could go to the Broadway Theatre and inquire about Miss C's schedule.

Morning, all! Sorry for being E&T for the last week or so...

TOD:
I don't quite know the difference between "crooner" and "vocalist," but I'd have to go with Jimmy Durante's "As Time Goes By" and "If I Had You"... I've been a fan of "the Schnozz" for decades now (his show with Lucille Ball as a guest remains one of the comic highlights of old-time radio for me), and what a remarkable talent the man had.

From Cilla:

I had a mild sedative for my cat when I moved from Arizona.  It worked well. He slept all day and at night he ran around the motel room and was fine

I have found mild sedatives helpful for some cats while most have adjusted without them.  I will double check but I believe his cat will be ok without one, she just won't be happy.  This cat flew from Romania to New York and has lived in three states now.  I think she knows the routine. ;D

Had you added another cat sooner you might not have had the same excellent results with the mix. :)

From John G:
Quote
When I moved from Middletown, Ohio, to upstate New York, I got a kitty sedative for Benjamin Stone. It didn't work. He crawled out of his box and decided the best place for him in the rental truck was under the clutch. I drove through the night on a one-lane highway through Pennsylvania. The other lane had been removed. It rained and visibility was next to nothing. And the cat kept getting mad whenever I had to shift gears.

One of the reasons I offered to help Craig during the drive, so his cat could get out of the carrier & I could make sure she didn't get under Craig's feet.

I had a wonderful 3-hour coffee get-together with my longtime friend Becky.  We hadn't seen each other for more than a year and a half, during which both of us have experienced major health crises.  The coincidence we discovered is that the male hematologist I've been seeing and the female rheumatologist she's been seeing share a very unusual last name.  I suspect they're husband and wife.  We agreed that we'd really missed each other and made plans to meet again for coffee before she and her husband leave for warmer climes for the winter.

JMK, I went through the same thing - unless you make an event list (as I ultimately had to do for the Kritzerland things), then you have to check each person you want to invite separately.  Once you've made a list, then you have the option of sending to that entire list.  It's really pretty screwy but it works well once you've done it.  UNTIL you do either of those things, no one will get the event.  I could send one out, too, but MY list is an LA list so I'd have to do exactly what you're going to have to do - check each thing separately - but I will be posting on my page.

You could also post the link to the Event here on HHW, as follows:

Then those DRs who happen to be on Facebook can click on the above link to view the Event/Invitation... Then they can RSVP and/or choose to Share it on their own Facebook Walls.

I just received an e-blast that Michael Tilson Thomas and the SF Symphony are releasing their Mahler cycle on a 22 LP collection.  I smell a Kritzerland rip-off--they're limiting it to 1,000 copies.  :)

I finally got my flu shot.  There were three of us there at two o'clock.  We all had to fill out a form (first time for that), then pay.  Then we were called one by one.  The two people before me were in for at least five minutes each.  I was in there for about thirty seconds.  I wonder why they were in there longer?  Weird.

I went over to my sister's house to help her feed and bathe the kids (since she is sick). It is the first time that I was alone trying to feed the baby.I had to get her food, and try to interpret her grunts and words.

She basically says "ma more" when she wants more of something". And she yells and points to her milk when she is thirsty.

But she is picky. She would not eat her chicken or cauliflower. She gobbled up her cucumbers, potatoes and pumpkin loaf like they were the best things ever.

My mom told me about a woman from my hometown, and the mother of a friend of mine, probably in her 80s - she was walking across the street in the cross walk with the light after going to a funeral and she was hit by a truck!   Last mom heard it broke both of her knees.  Luckily one of the area ostepaths was at the hospital in town today and she was able to get right into surgery.   Very scary.

DR Ginny - It must be the season for reconnecting with old friends.  I've had some wonderful face-to-face "reunions" over the past couple of weeks with some dear friends myself.

And a week from tonight we're hosting a family gathering because a California cousin of Richard's will be in town with her husband.  I've never met them and she and Richard last saw each other when she was 13 and he was 11.

We've just locked down our one and only LACCTAA event, but it's a doozie - a panel of the busiest directors of LA musical theater - Lewis Wilkenfeld (the artistic director of Cabrillo Music Theater), Steve Glaudini (the artistic director of Musical Theater West), Daniel Henning (the artistic director of the Blank Theater), Michael Michetti (director of many Reprise shows and straight plays at A Noise Within, as well as tons of waiver theater musicals), and Calvin Remsberg (lots of musicals around town - and best known as Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd).  I'd say that's a pretty stellar panel.

The Broadway station on XM had the revival cast of Sweet Charity on tonight, which I've never heard before.  Loved the orchestrations, thought Applegate was OK, but was obviously trying to channel Verdon.  Didn't like O'Hare, at least in his affected voice.  When he belted, he was great.  But where oh where did "A Good Impression" come from?  Was it a Coleman/Fields trunk song?

Even without Ms. C, the fam enjoyed PROMISES, PROMISES. I liked Sean Hayes, very fun. We came in with no preconceived notions about what the show should be; I truly knew nothing about it. Naz recognized that it was a musical version of THE APARTMENT. But we were all pretty unfamiliar with the songs, other than "She Likes Basketball", "Turkey Lurkey" and the title song. But the pop songs that were added really did not seem to fit organically. Even if I hadn't read about it here I would have thought that.

I was surprised that Sean Hayes had a nice singing voice. And I think the folks enjoyed in more than PeeWee. My mom loves PeeWee but Naz is from Lebanon and I think the 50's kids TV references probably went past him. Plus, the freezing temps of the PeeWee show were pretty awful.

We had some good eating today...croissants and macarons at the (former) Madeline's. (Mom thought macarons were "too sweet". Whaaa??) Naz though the almosd crossants at our French bakery in Marietta were better. (He's right!) But they haven't had the Petrossian ones, yet. Maybe tomorrow!

Lunch was soup dumpings and turnip shortbreak at Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown. I tried to talk them into the braised pork shoulder but they wanted more "American" fare and got sesame chicken. Not so good...very tough.

Dinner was at the Edison before the show, and I picked up some local beer (McSorley's)...much more pleasant that going to the actual bar.

Good Evening!

I went to see "A Quiet Place" at City Opera tonight. I have very vague memories of seeing the revised-original production at The Kennedy Center back in 1984, as I sat in the StateKoch Theater tonight, those memories became even more vague - at least in regards to the physical production.  Musically speaking, I remembered quite a bit, and with "Trouble in Tahiti" interpolated into the second act, I was on very familiar ground for a while.

26 years later, Bernstein's score still awes and puzzles me at the same time.  This was Bernstein's only full-length opera, and it had quite a rocky gestational period.  Is it perfect? No. But at the same time, it does feel complete, even with the purposely indeterminate ending.

I thought the physical production was a bit too sparse, and that the lighting was a bit too harsh, but it all worked with the director's concept. -And I'd have to say that the somewhat "psychological" staging just muddled the already cerebral plot.  But I give credit to New York City Opera for finally bringing "A Quiet Place" to New York City, and for taking the risk to present it.  -Especially since it's coupled this fall with Strauss' "Intermezzo".*

*And since I was already booked to see "Intermezzo", that is why I am not able to attend the 6:30 screening of "Jews and Baseball".  Sadly, unless the partay goes late, I probably won't be able to make the post-screening festivities either. :(  But, again, hopefully, I'll be able to see some DRs on my way out of The Quad.

DR JMK - Yes, "A Good Impression" was pulled from Cy Coleman's "trunk" before he died. Apparently, it was written for the original production of Sweet Charity, but cut early on.

Let's just hope that they all don't get even busier, and then have to cancel and send their assistant directors in their place.

;)

Back from the Gardenia - we had a ton of fun before the show, and the singer was perky, but the act, originally directed by Barry Kleinbort and MD'd by Chris Denny (here Shelly Markham) was very strange and kind of a textbook example of everything I don't like about cabaret and that I strive to stay away from.

And speaking of the opera... I have to be back at Lincoln Center in eight hours to attend the final dress rehearsal of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte - which features BariHunk, Nathan Gunn (http://nathangunn.com/) and some other wonderful singers.  My friend, Bradley, is making his Met debut with this production as an assistant conductor to William Christie, and he was able to snag a rehearsal pass for me.

OH! So I guess the show would not be what you'd call a "guilty pleasure", huh? ;)

Sunset Blvd invited preview was well received.  It's coming together.  It's nice when a dream becomes a reality.

Good night!
