Well, you've read the noets, the noets were surreal, and now it is time for you to post until the surreal cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SACCADE!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
We are busy tonight with a little thing called Jews and Baseball.
And we get to see the amazing and wonderful Amy Linton, her mother and Naz, Dear Larry and Amazing Deb.
Looking forward to it!
-
Il pleut à New York maintenant
-
I'm alone at 5:40am.
-
Finish the oatmeal and coffee, take a shower and then into the office for our last day (it's deadline day and we will close at 5pm come hell or high water).

Mais non!

While we'll be at Good After the 6:30 show, I may go back to the Quad bewteen the 8:20 and 10ish shows to say hi to folks who came to the late show and then come back to Good Stuff with whoever wants to join us (if anyone does!)
-
I'm glad that a bad review in the Times won't keep away the HHW contingent. (Of course, we already have our tickets, so I guess we're all stuck anyway! :-) )
But I hope you all like it...
-
OK, going back to zzzz....see you later, Ben!
-
And remember, if my mom says or does anything odd, offensive, etc...she's 80! :-)
-
Good morning! I'm up early and ready to go
-
Ricky woke me up, but I have many work related things on my mind. It's a good thing. Reading The Angel if Death Row really inspired me
-
Wish I could be there tonight for Jews and Baseball. I will be at my friend Jamie's art sale. I don't need any new art, so I'm hoping just to be there, but I know how I am....
-
Since I already have 3 of his paintings, I don't really need another one...
-
Better get going, the natives are getting restless and that means getting in trouble..with a capital T and that rhymes with C and that stands for Cats.
-
How's the new Cat sculpture adapting to the neighborhood?
-
Thanks to DR JMK for the photo.....yes that is the lovely Carroll Baker on the cover of that Saturday Evening Post in her makeup as she should have appeared in HARLOW.....before it was all changed and Jean Harlow seemed to have time-traveled to 1965 for her hair and makeup.

TOD:
CD - Beach Blanket Bingo, soundtrack

DR MBARNUM I look forward to the Santo DVD's.

The LACCT event sounds divoon.

I hope everyone enjoys the Jews & Baseball tonight!

DR EDISAURUS thanks for the continuing NYC theatre reports.
Congrats to DR MATTHEW on his SUNSET BOULEVARD preview!!!

Off to work, I guess.

Me, too.
KIDDING!!!! ;D
-
So let's move this along.
-
We have to be out of here by 10AM because she of the Evil Eye, NY-style, is coming at 10!
-
Not like we wrecked the place or anything...I guess it's her regular gig. Although why you would hire someone to clean a small apartment when you don't work a day job is sort of beyond me, but I guess it keeps people employed!
-
OK, this helps make up for the crappy NYT review."JEWS AND BASEBALL knocks it out of the park":

Good morning, all! I slept past 9 am, but I am now bathed and dressed. I have some time to spend at the NYPL at Lincoln Center today, and I hope to head down there around 11, stop at the 68th Street post office to mail a package, and hobble over to the library. This damned leg got a good rest last night but it isn't recuperating as quickly as I want it to.
I have little else to report. Last night's dreams involved a trip to Sondheim's home for him to sign some things and a shopping with his assistant. In retrospect, though, it wasn't a visit to Steve's actual home, but more like a trip to the Dakota on West 72nd.

The other night I watched THE DEADLY TOWER w/Kurt Russell.
That's the true story of Charles Whitman and his killing all those people from the tower in Austin.
I thought it was quite good, although the film was shot in Louisiana.

-
In my dvd player is Millenium 3 in french.
On my PVR i have last night's The Mentalist.
-
Looking forward to seeing everyone at 8:30 at the diner!
-
Friday morning greetings! Ahhh, it was nice to sleep until my hips woke me up, rather than panicked phone calls from Rob, etc. Today I have cardiac rehab, followed by some errands, but I'd rather be at the Quad for Jews and Baseball!
-
Review BD: The 25th Anniversary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concerts. A-maz-ing!!
-
I'm up, I'm up. Was hoping to sleep a little later, but alas, I didn't.
-
Wish I could be there for Jews and Baseball, but I'll be here for Jews and Couches.
-
Good morning. I am not working today. I took the day off.
-
We were officially told yesterday that our division of the state (Choldren's Services) will be taking either the 24th or the 29th of November off for our new furlough day. Therefore we will be getting a five day Thanksgiving Holiday weekend (except one of the days will be without pay).
Personally, I was hoping that they would make the furlough day November 12. All state buildings are closed for Veteran's Day on Thursday the 11th, so it seems foolish (and not very cost effective), just to reopen and reheat all of the state buildings for the one day of Friday the 12th.
Logic was apparently not a factor in this decision.

I also took today off...am going up to Tigard to bring down my grandniece Taylor so that we can attend the Natya Leela dance production in Salem.
Taylor's grammy (my sister Sue) will attend with us and then afterwards we 3 will have a pajama party at my apartment....and we will be watching the film PAJAMA PARTY, as well!!
It will be Taylor's introduction to classic both east Indian dance and Annette Funicello.

I'm thinking instead of cupcakes a Red Velvet Cake would be pretty in a rose cake pan (I would serve the cream cheese frosting on the side). Now I need a good recipe, any comments on the following one?
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ounces red food color, (1/4 cup)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1. Preheat the oven to 350°.
2. Spray two 9" round cake pans with non-stick spray; place a piece of parchment in the pan and spray again. Set aside.
3. Alternately place liners in 24 cupcake cups, grease and flour a standard bundt pan, or spray a 9 x 13" dripper pan with non-stick spray and line with parchment.
4. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar; add the eggs, food coloring, and vanilla.
5. Mix the flour, salt, baking soda, and cocoa; add them to the butter mixture alternately with the buttermilk and vinegar.
6. Beat until smooth.
7. Pour into the prepared pan(s) and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the cake leaves the sides of the pan: 9" round layers - about 30 minutes, 24 cupcakes - 15-20 minutes, bundt pan - 55-60 minutes, 9 x 13" dripper pan - 45-55 minutes.
8. Remove from the oven and let sit 10 minutes, then invert onto a cooling rack and cool thoroughly.
-
All the bundt pan recipes I have use sour cream and some of the woman in my book group have to watch their cholesterol. I would love to hear of any good recipes for the pan that aren't loaded with fat.
-
And remember, if my mom says or does anything odd, offensive, etc...she's 80! :-)

Have a great time tonight!!!

I've read on the cast recording list the disturbing news that Michelle Nicastro has passed away. BK, is this true?

Knee vibes for Elmore
Thank you, dear!
-
Oh, no. I haven't heard, but given her last message to me a couple of months ago, it would not surprise me - the cancer had spread to her brain, and she was in a wheelchair and things did not look good.
-
oh dear - I very sorry to hear this news about Michelle ----my condolences to those of you who knew her personally
-
I have not found anything about Michelle's death - elmore can you get more information?
-
Have picked up very heavy boxes filled with very heavy tapes.
-
Oh, no. I haven't heard, but given her last message to me a couple of months ago, it would not surprise me - the cancer had spread to her brain, and she was in a wheelchair and things did not look good.
Phil Crosby reported that her Facebook page seemed to be indicating the death. I had asked Michelle to accept my friend offer, but I think she was already too far gone to do anything. As a result, I can't check out her profile to see what's going on.
The poor woman; she was a beautiful person.
-
But they're not as heavy as my heart if this Michelle Nicastro news is true.
-
How's the new Cat sculpture adapting to the neighborhood?
Oh, he's listing a bit to the left, but other than that he's quite happy - nice view from his vantage point. I'm thinking about moving him into the garage this weekend. I may put him in my living room for the winter, but he's pretty big.
-
It's not official but I just found this site with condolences about MN

And no, I'm not on Facebook, this seems to be a public page.

I met Phil Crosby, who remained one of John McGlinn's few friends from Northwestern, when he came to the McGlinn memorial last year. He played Luisa's father opposite Michelle Nicastro at Northwestern.

Oh Dear! I didn't get the memo. I came to work at 7:00 AM and am still here
-
Well, I guess it's true. This is the second singer that I was very close with that has passed and ironically both of them were the biggest sellers I ever produced - first Laurie, now Michelle. And neither of them, two of the nicest, most genuine people it's ever been my pleasure and honor to know and love, deserved to go.

Amen! I think of Laurie often and very fondly, and, while I only worked with Michelle a couple of times on things, I loved her humor, warmth, huge heart, and enormous talent. I always envied Lanny, who got to work with her on her solo recordings.

I am going to see the movie Conviction this weekend. Really glad it's here in town

So sorry to hear about Michelle Nicastro. When DR Sandra was young, she brought home a tape or cd from the library called "Toonful Too," which as far as I can tell is the first BK music we had ever heard.

So, what theatre am I going to tonight on 13th Street?
-
When are you leaving for the city Miss Deb?
-
Le soleil a sorti ! ! J'espère que la pluie est allée pour le jour !

The Quad. It's between 5th and 6th Avenue on 13th Street. We will be waiting for you with your ticket. Take the 1, 2 or 3 to 14th Street. If you sit in the middle of the train you can get out at 13th Street and walk one and a half blocks east and you're there. It's the same place we saw Sacco and Vanzetti.

Went and had some lunch and thought about Michelle - I don't want to be sad - she wouldn't like that - I just want to celebrate that she was one of the nicest, kindest, most genuine people ever put on the planet, and to remember what magic we made in the studio - I'd forgotten it was four albums (I always forget the sequel to Toonful).

I am very sorry to hear about Michelle NiCastro and have listened to her "Never Never Land" in remembrance.

I can't find headphones - I know I had two pairs of excellent headphones and they are nowheresville - probably hidden in one of the forty boxes in the garage, I should imagine. But for some reason I can't figure out which input the wiring guy used for my DAT player, so in order to listen to a couple of DATS I need headphones. Guess I'll go buy a pair.

I think the printer repairman who was supposed to reinstall the printer onto the laptop erased the hard drive instead. It shouldn't be that easy to do!

Oh Laura!! :(
-
There were minutes from the last meeting that I was still editing. They are gone.
-
I was looking over Michelle's credits today, BK, and saw you used Walt Fowler on one of your sessions. I grew up with the Fowler Brothers, though they were all several years older than I. They went to my high school (as did Stu Goldberg, later of Mahavishnu fame), and their father was Dean of the School of Music at the University of Utah for many years, though he left before I got there.

There were minutes from the last meeting that I was still editing. They are gone.
I sense a new printer in your future.

Or at the very least a new printer tech! Sue the bastard.

Jane: Here's my mother's recipe for red velvet cake. The cake is spectacular. I add coconut to the filling and I would suggest using cream cheese frosting instead of her seven-minute frosting:
Red Velvet Cake
Red Velvet Cake was hugely popular in the Sixties, but it fell out of style. It’s suddenly popular again, but the cake has changed. Nowadays, it’s not served with a filling and it’s not iced with 7-minute frosting. Here’s the original version of this cake. But if you want a more modern version, then use the cream cheese frosting recipe on page ????
Cake:
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ cup shortening
1 ½ cups sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup red food coloring
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Filling:
1 cup milk
5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup (2 sticks) margarine or butter, at room temperature
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
7-minute frosting:
3 cups sugar
2/3 cup water
½ cup light corn syrup
3 egg whites
Shredded coconut, for garnish
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and line 3 (9-inch) cake pans.
Sift together cocoa powder, flour, salt and baking soda. Set aside.
Using a mixer, cream shortening for 2 minutes. Add sugar, cream for at least 1 more minute. Add eggs, 1 at a time. Add vanilla and red food coloring. Slowly add flour mixture, alternating with a mixture of buttermilk and vinegar, starting and finishing with flour mixture. Pour into prepared pans.
Bake for 25 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Let rest 10 minutes before turning onto cake racks. Immediately remove wax paper. Let cool.
To make filling, cook milk and flour until very thick. Cool in refrigerator. Once cool, mix margarine, powdered sugar and vanilla in a mixture. Add milk-flour mixture. Spread between layers of cake.
To make frosting, set up a double boiler. Bring water to a boil before reducing heat to a simmer. Cook sugar, water and corn syrup in top of double boiler until it forms a soft ball (or 130 degrees on a candy thermometer). Beat egg whites until stiff. Add a little a time from mixture. Spread on cake. Sprinkle with shredded coconut.

He erased my hard drive. Everything is gone.

Sorry I can't be there for the movie tonight. Hope all of you have fun. I did make it to South Padre Island, though, where the weather is warm and the breeze is cool. Laura, you should call a computer expert because sometimes you may think everything's gone but they can somehow retrieve - can you call a customer service line for whatever brand it is? And I'm really not understanding how he could so easily nuke the contents of a hard drive. Please call the customer service line and tell them exactly what he did and see if they have any suggestions.
-
He clicked on something when it was rebooting. I think it was "factory restore."
-
I am trying to get in touch with my son. He can figure it out. Maybe.
The good news is that I think I found a copy of the minutes on my camera card. I won't know until I can install Office and open it up in Word.
-
Is this your personal computer or work computer? I hope the company does something to help with the problem. I think if you only lost the minutes you were editing you are very lucky, not to take away from the fact you shouldn't have lost anything.
-
Jane: Here's my mother's recipe for red velvet cake. The cake is spectacular.
Thank you. :) The apple cider vinegar vs the usual white is intriguing. What kind of vegetable shortening do you use? Have you ever substituted cake flour? I've noticed a number of the recipes use cake flour.
-
It's the work computer.
-
It didn't have all your wonderful photos in it, did it? I really hope not
-
It did. But I should have other copies of most of them.
-
That is such sad news about Michelle Nicastro. :(
-
Boy, I hope so. BK is right though, you should check with a professional. When I was doing a lot of internet crime cases, we were able to recover many things that had intentionally been deleted or erased. Maybe someone can recover info for you

For some reason the cd my niece has decided to listen to every night before bed is ANNIE. It is the tv movie version that had Kristin Chenoweth and Audra McDonald. She wants to listen to it every single night.
Tonight when I put her to bed she asked for it and asked me if I wanted to sing the first 3 songs with her. IT was the cutest thing. She knows all the words and sings along quite well.

Laura, please call a professional or customer service for whoever makes the computer. Don't just give up - there may be a way to recover things.
-
Well, I don't think I can stay awake until the Jews and Baseball party breaks up - keep the lights on for 'em - 'night!

I'm the first returnee from the wonderful evening. The film was excellent and the after party at Good Stuff Diner was marvelous. We had Larry, Anthony, Julie, Amy's mother and her partner, Naz (and me) and Peter the director.
But this little boy is tired (it's way past my bedtime) so I'll go to bed and let others talk tonight. Tomorrow I'll post something.
Amy did take pictures so she may put something up tonight or tomorrow before she leaves.
-
I also went to Michelle's Facebook page and so many of her friends posted good wishes to her prior to the announcement that she had passed.
She was loved.
I remember when I went to NYC for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, one of the "acts" (not sure what you call the people/groups who perform in the parade) were moving to Michelle's and Guy Haines recording of "Be A Santa"
-
So tonight I am going to listen to a recording of Merlin in her honor.
-
We're dedicating the December Gardenia show to her memory and the opening number will, of course, be Be A Santa.
-
What about vixmom? Did she make it to the movie?

Nice. I wish I could be there.

From me too

DR vixmom just dropped me off at the corner of 81st and Amsterdam to head east through the park to Second Avenue and thence to the 59th Street Bridge on her way back to Long Island. The movie is absolutely wonderful, touching, funny, tragic, and very well done.
The dinner at the diner was quite lovely and quite good. I sat between DRs Julie and Ben, and I had a wonderful time. Now, it's time for bed.
-
Sounds like a good time was had by all at the NYC Jews and Baseball gathering... :)
-
OK, this helps make up for the crappy NYT review."JEWS AND BASEBALL knocks it out of the park":

Congrats, Edi and Movie Makers! :D

Watching a motion picture but am restless. Tried to rustle up someone to go have a snack with, but alas no one be home.
-
Maybe I'll just go sit somewhere and have a nosh. All I have here is Halloween candy and I've had my fill of that already - and I did a jog - I do have some English muffins but that sounds a little boring.

Opera singer Shirley Verrett dies at 79 in Mich. (http://www.comcast.net/articles/music/20101106/Obit.Verrett/)

Man, what's with all these people dying?
-
I just got back from the 2nd shift of the Good Stuff gathering! It was truly great to see everyone, and thank you all for parent-sitting while we went back for the 2nd Q&A. We got there right as the credits started!
I had some dear friends in the audience, so Peter and I brought them over to the diner and we spent another hour there. The waiter was very patient; I explained to him what was going on and he was very nice about it (and about his tip!).
I will try posting photos before I leave or else after I get home tomorrow night. I have more J and B dates to add to the Facebook screenings calendar tonight!
-
Vixmom---per your request, a texas date was added tonight, but not sure if it's a city near your peeps...San Antonio?
-
DR Laura---as the others have said, take it to a pro before you give up! A different pro...
Vibes you recover everything!
-
Oh...I are ti-red. Thanks for everyones vibes. I'm going to reenact Jews and Couches right here, right now.
-
Nytol!
-
I just got home - the powers that be decided to shut down the Long Island Expressway just east of my exit in orderto perform repair work - of course no noitce was put up so that people could get off at earlie exits - it took me 90 minutes to drive a mile.
I hope Larry didn't wait up for my "I'm home safe" message!

I guess Ben was a tired boy - he forgot FJL, Amy and me!
-
I loved the movie- I learned a lot and was quite moved and I urge everyone to see it when it gets to your neck of the woods!
-
Amy's mom, Ruth, and Naz were delightful dinner companions
-
Oh Elmore - your directions were flawless
-
It was also very nice to see Jose however fleetingly
-
My camera decided to die as soon as soon as I arrived at the theatre so we must depend on Edi for pix
-
and thank you to Edi for dinner!!!!
-
I went over to Hugo's and had a salad and a barbecue turkey sandwich and veggies - it made me feel better.
-
I actually wrote part one of the notes much earlier today, so I'll write part two, get them posted early, and get to bed - I'm emotionally exhausted.
