Title: DOING THE THINGS WE NEED TO DO

Well, you've read the notes, the notes did what they needed to do, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently doing the things they need to do, like chewing their cud in a mindless fashion.

Vixdad decided to blog about his recent experience:  It made me laugh and thought it might give one or two of you a giggle:

Agony! Much More Painful Than Yours!

So on Thursday night I started to feel a pain in my lower right abdomen.

I assumed it was just gas, a side-effect of the Metamucil-rich diet Doc Rubberglove insists I partake of, but it didn't stop on Friday, it just got steadily worse until I called Doc Rubberglove's office and begged to be seen.

The trip back onto the island was pure hell, made infinitely worse by the LIRR calling for me to switch trains at Jamaica onto one which started at Penn Station loaded to 150% of its seating capacity. By the time I got to Wyandanch station I was almost in tears.

Doc Rubberglove took one look, gave a grunt of surprise, said "you look really ill, does it hurt when I do this?"

When his hearing had returned somewhat he yelled "It might be appendicitis!", took a quick look at his inch-thick liability insurance policy, hustled me into his own car and drove me to the Emergency Room thereby cutting through about four hours of red tape and getting me to someone with needles and blood-drawing gear in about half an hour. Mrs Stevie hove into theater during the lengthy triage process.

There a man who told me he used to be an electrician but found that people wouldn't pay him on time attempted to mount a hep-lock in the back of my hand and use it to draw blood. The pain of this process was enough to drive the pain coming from my lower bowel from my head and cause me to pass out for a few seconds. While I was out, Mrs Stevie used the opportunity to tell everyone how I'd passed out some years ago when giving blood.

This was a base calumny. I had not passed out. I had told the staff to hide from my sight the bottle steadily filling with my blood as it rocked back and forth on a small device to mix anticoagulants into it, because I thought I might faint. The two other guys I was with had laughed at my squeamishness and called me names. Then with perfect timing one of them took a good look at his rocking bottle o' blood, let out a quavering moan and passed out. Then his muscles relaxed in such a fashion that it took the staff about thirty minutes to clean up the place and he was disinvited from giving blood there ever again. While I and the other guy were waiting for him to regain enough strength to start attempting the commute from the World Trade Center to Penn Station we discussed the problems of navigating a partially disabled person with questionable control of his sphincter musculature through the public transportation system of Manhattan during rush hour. As we pondered the best course of action, a thin, wavering, reedy voice came from behind a screen: "You go on, lads. I'll be alright." I waited about a microsecond for him to request a service revolver and one round before we left, then burst into gales of helpless laughter.

That is what happened that day.

When I woke up the hep-lock agonizer said "So, I hear you fainted the last time you gave blood."

"What? No! It was the other guy who fainted!" I yelled, then screamed as the reflex to sit up to make my point had induced the original reason for my being there.

Doc Rubberglove hove into view. "Does it still hurt when I do this?" he asked, and there followed a couple of minutes of nurses, doctors and patients staggering around clutching their bleeding ears and moaning quietly.

I was made to pee in a jar, then to carry the jar around with me for an hour or so as I was moved hither and yon, ending up in a rather nice, quiet abdominal ER with three patients and about six nursing staff in it.

A very attractive nurse gave me a cup of ice and a bottle of contrast fluid, told me to drink it as quickly as I could and remarked in passing "So, you fainted when you last gave blood?"

"What? No! It was the other guy! I didn't faint!" I yelled as she injected my IV line with something that began with "Z", had four syllables and made my head feel like I'd drunk a pint of Bacardi white rum.

A doctor hove into view. "You don't want to chug that" he said. "Drink it slowly so it spreads out. So, I hear you faint when you give blood."

"Whu? Nnnw. Wuz ovva guy whut fainted." I was having trouble getting my eyes to point in the same direction by then.

"He doesn't give blood anyway" sniffed Mrs Stevie. "He has Mad Cow disease."

"D'n't! Tha's lie! 've g't Prius. Mebbe!" now the stuff that began with "Z" had reduced the pain in my bowels to tolerable levels, everyone around me was attempting to induce a pain a bit lower down. It was all very trying.

"Have you finished that drink yet?" asked the nice nurse who had given me the stuff that started with "Z".

"Doc told me to slow down" I replied.

"Well, the faster you finish the faster we get you into the cat scan and figure out what the hell is wrong with you" she said.

So I chugged it down

Meanwhile, Doc Rubberglove (who has privileges at this hospital) was dictating his notes on my case into a small recording device. I only caught part of it. The part that went "...fainted when giving blood some years before".

Damn that woman!

Another nurse, this one a male biker with a mohawk and tattoos hove into view and demanded more blood. As he was inserting the needle in my arm (the hep-lock was in use) he said "You're the fainter, yeah?"

"B'g p'dun?" I mumbled, attempting to make sense of the world through stuff-that-starts-with-Z-addled senses.

"You faint when you give blood. Everyone says so"

"Whut? No! Wuz other guy!"

"Nope, it was you. I was there" said the ex-electrician as he walked by.

"No! Other time! Not me!"

"I think he's having a reaction to the stuff that starts with "Z"" opined the biker, drawing the thirteenth test-tube full of blood.

Eventually, just as the stuff that begins with "Z" was wearing off I was wheeled down to two guys dressed in black who ran the Cat Scanner. They made me pull down my trousers and lie on a table with my hands on my head, then, just as they were about to start the machine one said "So, I hear you fainted when you gave blood"

"Which time?" I demanded. "Yes I fainted this evening because of all the agony I'm experiencing but no I didn't when I gave blood. That was the other guy!"

The noise of the cat scanner's recorded voice drowned out the last part of my outraged cries but not the unseemly sniggers of the two goths in the control room.

I'd been back in the ER about ten minutes when the nice nurse who gave me the stuff that starts with "Z" told me I was going home because I didn't have appendicitis. This she relayed as "good news". No, what I had was something called "Epiploic Appendagitis" which feels as bad as appendicitis but instead of being susceptible to surgery and quick pain relief it is what doctors call "self-limiting", which is a fifty dollar phrase for "gets better on its own" over an indeterminate number of days but so far longer than four.

Good news indeed, just not for me.

Continued from yesterday...highlights of HHW for me have mostly been the meetings in person.  The first time was in Portland at JMK's (now former) home.  Being able to meet BK in person after being a regular poster for so long.  Getting to see PennyO perform her very own show, Jewish Thighs on Broadway, here in Washington.  Getting to see the reading of The Last Starfighter in Issaquah AND meeting the writers, DR FJL and Skip...and also meeting DR Julie!

But the highest highlight was BEING in a production of BK and David Wechter's very own show, The Brain From Planet X!!

And...

Earlier tonight, I returned to the Metropolitan Opera for the season premiere of Mozart's Così fan tutte.  It was fun seeing it again after last week's final dress rehearsal.  -And my friend, Bradley - who was making his Met Debut as the harpsichord continuo player - somehow managed to snag me a prime orchestra seat.  I felt truly spoiled and fortunate.

Afterwards, we headed out to celebrate his official debut with another conducting colleague, and while we were there, Mr. Nathan Gunn happened to drop by with his guests too.

All in all, it was a truly wonderful evening, and I was, well, am very proud of my friend.  He played beautifully tonight. -And he has seven or eight more to go - two of which will be broadcast on Sirius XM as well as on the Met's website.

DR vixmom - I just checked the dates, and, yes, you were correct that Jewish Thighs came before the HHWE&W&E&W Tour!

Jewish Thighs was in March-April of 2005. -And then I officially moved up here to NYC about a month later - and then ended up at Williamstown a week after I moved into my apartment!

The HHWE&W&E&W Tour took place in October of 2005.

WOW!!

Bye for now.

It reminds me of Stephen Sondheim's song

Yes I know, goodbye for now,
How long? ~ a year, a day?
Yes I love you, yes you're with me,
here now, next to me, and worlds away!
See I free you, and I'll see you when I see you,
fine, OK?
Goodbye for now, again
Goodbye until whenever then
We're free, that's what we said we'd be,
at leave to come an' go, you as well as I,
somehow each "hello" makes it worth "goodbye" for now!
Goodbye for now, again
Goodbye until whenever then
We're free, that's what we said we'd be,
at leave to come an' go, you as well as I,
somehow each "hello" makes it worth "goodbye" for now!
Goodbye . . . hmm . . . goodbye

I'll stay a week or two,
I'll stay the summer through,
but I am telling you,
I must be going.

Good morning, all! I have several things this morning, the NYPL and the Frank :Loesser office where we hope to inventory the P/Cs and orchestra scores for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. A lot of the piano scores are dated in late 1955, but the Big Date in red pencil is 1/24/56, which seems to be the date that scores were released to Don Walker for orchestration. In the case of "Joey Joey" the song was orchestrated in D and later transposed to D-flat. While the show was trying out, Act One Scene Three was completely configured. I don't think much new composition went on, but two things did occur: a lot of sung recitative became spoken dialogue and several numbers were either repositioned (like "Joey Joey") or cut (like the "Rosabella" duet for Marie and Tony).

My meeting on the Appalachian project was postponed yesterday since the director was under the weather. I don't know when we'll be meeting next, but I did send him a list of my free times.

BK, I think it's great you are going to the funeral and I love Marsha Kramer. I'm so happy that she's going with you.

More coffee!

DR Elmore - it's possible I may be part of a production of The Most Happy Fella next year and because of house size, we may end up using the two piano arrangement.  What do you know about it?  And/or, what are your feelings about it?

I think it's a fine alternative to the orchestra and just the thing for a small production. I'd much rather hear 2 pianos than 5-12 players trying to tackle a 35-piece orchestration and losing. I bet the 2-piano reduction at Goodspeed sounded wonderful, although when I saw ithat production on Broadway in a large theatre - much as I loved the production and cast - I felt I was sitting at a gypsy runthru.

Vixmom, one of my biggest mistakes as a husband, and one which DW Wife Betsy will probably never let me forget, is not giving her any sympathy one day for a bad stomachache she had which of course turned out to be appendicitis, for which she needed surgery.  My error is usually trotted out at the height of some other completely unrelated "discussion" we're having which involves my rampant stupidity.  :)

Oy, I've had a needlessly stressful last few hours.  Weeks ago I was madly throwing old files away in a (vain) attempt to get this new house cleaned up.  Yesterday I started having the nagging pit in the stomach feeling that I had thrown away a very important document pertaining to our oil tank decommissioning at the old house.  I spent all of this morning looking for it to no avail.  I knew our realtor had made a copy, so I left a message for him, and I called the Oregon DEQ and left a message for them.  Well, I just looked inside one of the hundreds of closets ( ;) ) in this house and found my file box with the info in it.  Whew.

Good news re: little Ricky.

Thanks for those who gave vibes. I am feeling almost good as new today. But boy was I scared last night.  I guess the expired pills worked.

Great to hear.  May I have one of those pills?  I really don't need one as Tylenol is working fairly well if I keep taking it.  I've had mild migraines with mild nausea on and off for over a week now.  It seems to be worse in the early morning hours interrupting my sleep.  My guess is my broken eye glasses and/or the new meds are causing it.

Oil heat was the norm in Portland in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.  Unfortunately the norm was also to bury the tanks underground, where they frequently rotted and leaked.  Those of us who bought homes with these old tanks often wanted to switch to gas, but we were required by state law to have the old oil tanks removed (decommissioned) and the oil which had leaked cleaned up.  I thought I had lost the document giving us the "all clear" that we had done these tasks.

I had a good workout at the CR gym today and did some grocery shopping on the way home.  When I got here, Richard was on the phone with his cousin, for whom we're hosting a family gathering tomorrow night.  They haven't seen each other since she was 13 and he was 11, so, of course, I've never met her.  She and I talked on the phone like we're long-lost friends.  I'm looking forward to meeting her and her husband.

Back from the funeral and a short visit to the house - the funeral was attended by at least five to six hundred people.  Parking was madness, but we got there about five minutes after the service had begun.  I'm not big on the service part, but Michelle's husband Steve spoke eloquently and wonderfully, with humor and warmth, Howard McGillan sung Ave Maria, and Reece Holland sang for good.  There was a very long period where everyone took communion or whatever it is - the wafer thing - all five hundred people (well, not all).  It was nice.  Then I went and got the helper started and then went to Steve and Michelle's gorgeous Toluca Lake home.  I didn't know that many people, but Michael Caprio was there (he worked at Varese most of the time I was there), and Joan Ryan.  I was fine until I saw Steve - he hugged me and was so effusive about the work Michelle and I had done and I could literally not speak.  I was there about fifteen minutes, then had to get back home to give Juliana A. Hansen a tape of her music.

Now I have to eat something.  The food at the wake was so much fun - Michelle's favorites - In 'n' Out Burgers, Stanley's chinese chicken salad, and some sort of chocolate cake thing.  I didn't eat, but everyone was loving it.

I love this story:

Johnny's Mother looked out the window and noticed him "playing church" with their cat.

He had the cat sitting quietly and he was preaching to it. She smiled and went about her work. A while later she heard loud meowing and hissing and ran back To the open window to see Johnny baptizing the cat in a tub of water.

She called out, "Johnny, stop that! The cat is afraid of water!"

Johnny looked up at her and said, "He should have thought about that before he joined my church."

BK, I'm not crazy about funerals either, but I wish I'd been in LA to go with you. It sounds quite beautiful.

I had another emergency afternoon: an email from one of the baritones singing with Rebecca Luker sent me a note saying he had the flu and couldn't sing tomorrow. I called Zak Stains and asked him if he would sing baritone instead of tenor if I couldn't find anyone and Zak agreed. Then I called my friend, also a friend of our DR Jose, Chris Carfizzi,  whose brother Patrick is an opera singer, and asked him if he wanted to be on a recording tomorrow. By 4:30, I had sent an mp3 file of the baritone part of the song to Chris  by email, then I called Zak and told him to go back to tenor, and at 6:00 he arrived here for a copy of the music and we visited for nearly an hour.

Since he left the apartment I've packed a final carton of a new shipment to Miami U Library, made tuna slad for lunch tomorrow and Friday, and now I have to get my music together for the next two days.

So, DR vixmom, I will tell E&T DRs DAW and Jason to get their butt cheeks back to HHW! I will also convey greetings to them from everyone.

I think some people are powervoting for the worst to try to get her to win.

I actually don't find it amusing. Maybe we'll be lucky and she'll get voted out this week. I think a lot of people will be mad if she gets in to the F3 over Kyle.

Man, it feels like it's nine o'clock already.  I did hear from my tape transfer guy who's coming by at eleven to drop off CDs of what's been transferred.  He tells me that there's about ninety-nine minutes of stuff, but that probably includes pauses and all that jazz, so maybe eighty or eighty-five is more like it - I'll know as soon as I load them into iTunes.  The original album on this title runs around thirty-five minutes, so I'm quite sure we've hit a little bonanza here, at least that's the hope.  Since it's been out on CD before, the decision will be whether to just do an entirely new presentation in film order and not bother with the original LP presentation, or whether to include the original LP - I suppose if we have to go to two CDs we'll do it all.

TCB, your story reminds me of the LOOOOONG joke about the priest and rabbi who decide to have a contest about converting a bear to their religion.  The joke goes on forever, but the punch line is the rabbi saying, "Next time, I won't start with the circumcision."
A cutting remark.

This made me teary eyed.  Again, I'm sorry for your loss of such a special person.

I won't say my head hurt today. but there was a slight headache sensation. And tonight driving I noticed all the blaring lights were bothering me a bit.

This afternoon I returned to physical therapy after a bit of a break.  The therapist was very pleased with my improved self, thanks to fun in the sun & water Maui trip.  He said I've done much better than most people with the same surgery & that I'm 90% improved.  I was very excited hearing the 90% figure until I realized he was saying I have 10% left to go.  Ten percent over what I have isn't all that great.

DR Edi - last night you were talking about the cable company.  I think the reason I'm really irritated is that it worked fine up until very recently, until my neighbor started doing his work....I don't really want to blame him, but I'm wondering if they've done something that has caused interference with the signal.

The guy who came out also irritated me because he clearly didn't want to do much to see what the problem was.  He just changed the cord and said that would fix it.  Oh, well.  I'm going to have to call them back tomorrow and change it from Friday afternoon to another time. I've got two appointments scheduled and I'm not going to leave work for them

So...

I had asked my parents to call me when they were getting close to the city so that I could meet them down at Port Authority as soon as their bus got in. Well... "Hi! We just drove through the Lincoln Tunnel. We'll be there in five minutes."

So, after jumping out of bed and scrambling to get ready, I made it down to Port Authority about 30 minutes later.  Alas, by that time, they had already made their way over to Radio City Music Hall to pick up their tickets for the Christmas Spectacular.  Luckily(?), since they somehow thought that Rockefeller Center was a couple of blocks north of Radio City - instead of right behind it - I was able to catch up with them right by MoMA.

One of my cousins from the Philippines, Jessalyn, came along, so I walked them through the shops and restaurants in the underground Concourse of Rockefeller Center.  And that's when my parents decided that they had already done enough(?) walking for the morning, so they grabbed a table and sat for a bit while I took Jessalyn on a whirlwind tour of Times Square.
Title: Re: DOING THE THINGS WE NEED TO DO

...And then I found out that my parents had not bought me a ticket for the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular.  However, it all worked out in the end, since I then got a call from a friend saying he had an extra ticket for the matinee of Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown.  So, around 1:30, I made sure they got in the proper line at Radio City, and I headed to The Belasco.
Title: Re: DOING THE THINGS WE NEED TO DO
Post by: JoseSPiano on November 10, 2010, 10:29:41 PM
As for Women On The Verge..., well... It's not a truly bad show.  It's not a truly good show.  It's a mess.  A hot mess.  A muy caliente mess.  There's a lot of talent on that stage - and a lot of moving scenery.  Perhaps there's too much moving scenery.

I liked the score, but I really loved the band and orchestrations!

And that's my review(?) of WOtVoaNB.

*I also believed I spied DR Julie in the audience, but since I had to run off to catch up with my parents...

My cousin, Christine, had also joined my parents by that time, and she took them on a tour of the Fox News studios - her husband in a camera man there.  And while they were walking through the halls, my mom spied Glenn Beck.  And, yes, she had a picture taken with him.

??? ??? ??? ???

*Even she admitted that she's never watched his show, just that she knew who he was. -Of course, she told him she watches him every day. ::)

To wrap up their day, I took my parents down to Chelsea to meet the folks from the SOUVLAKI GR (http://www.souvlakigr.com/) truck.  Abby, one of the owners, treated my parents and cousins to a light dinner: chicken and pork souvlaki and some bifteki.  Then after a brief walk-thru of The Limelight Marketplace (http://limelightmarketplace.com/), we took the C train back up to Port Authority where they boarded a bus back to Atlantic City.

Whew! :)

And then I headed back to Carnegie Hall tonight for a performance by violinist, Robert McDuffie, and The Venice Baroque Orchestra.  The first half of the concert consisted of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons".  The second half of the NYC Premiere of "The American Four Seasons" by Philip Glass.

In short, it was a great concert.  Not only was the Music wonderful, but it was also great witnessing the rapport between all the players.  Robert McDuffie is touring this "Seasons Project" right now, and it was very easy to see that they've become a very tight-knit group.

And as an added bonus, Philip Glass, himself, was in attendance, and took part in the very well-deserved lengthy standing ovation.

Whew.

DR elmore - YAY for Chris! -At first, I thought you were going to say that you got Patrick!

What time will you be finishing up tomorrow?  Maybe I could catch you guys on the way out.

Very good news here in the City of Studio as regards the next Kritzerland release - the original album (which has been issued twice on CD) is quite weird - out of film sequence a little, and then all the music is literally from the second half of the film.  We've got it all - every cue from beginning to end including some cues that didn't make the film.  This will now become a 2 CD release and I think people will go ape over it - in fact, I predict an immediate sellout.  In fact, I may see about upping this to 1200 to 1500 units.  It's absolutely fantastic music, a beloved score, and we've got bonus tracks, too.
