Title: THEY ABIDE, AND THEY ENDURE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes endured and abided, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently enduring and abiding in parts unknown.

Yeah they do. My point was that my niece had never really been sick for the first 15 months of her life, till she started daycare.

Good morning, all! I too had a difficult time logging on this morning.

The Oaf was one noisy cuss around 1:30 this morning so I guess he means to go out with a bang: lots of walking about, primarily, and little in the way of crashes and thumps. I will be extremely happy when he's out of the building.

I'm off to the NYU Dental Clinic again this morning; my dentist rescheduled me yesterday during all of the leaky sink madness. She says I won't be there more than 30 minutes so we'll see how it goes. After that, I will come back here, get my notes together and head down to the Theatre Collection for more research.

BK, I love NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, and have loved it since I first saw it around 1977 or so, when I was in Jr. High School.

Robert Mitchum in that film reminded me very much of my step-father (making it very easy for anyone to understand why I moved from my mom's house to my dad's house!)

My BK question of the day:

What movie(s) have you always wanted to see, but have never been able to locate or catch on TV.

For me it would be the 1959 film noir TOKYO AFTER DARK starring Richard Long and Michi Kobi. It was released by Paramount, so you would think it would not be so obscure...but I have never even been able to find even a grey market print of the thing!

Same with the 20th Century Fox film HIGH POWERED RIFLE starring Allison Hayes. If I am recollecting correctly this early in the morning, it is the only Allison Hayes film I have not yet seen.

JR and/or I were remiss in not posting Miss Frances Farmer's absolutely exquisite poem THE JOURNEY yesterday.  I consider it a masterpiece.

The Journey

NORTH

“not that I speak in respect of want...”

If in Seattle then, the rain
Still mingles in the trees,
Mixed with the dank and dearly loved grey spume
Off Puget Sound.
Who will remember?
I feel the source but I long since
Have torn myself away,
Against the rock and rain of other shores
My roots are breaking.
Oh mother who so closely clung,
And fiercely fought the native years,
How can it be that only in defeat
You found your strength?
Retreat, retreat in peace and grieve,
The grey sky covers all, and still it rains
On Puget Sound
And still the tree lies shattered.

SOUTH
“but I have learned ...”

Along the rim of Hawks Nest Bay
A growth of trees drop shade,
The red ant swarms,
Green water hisses over the reef,
And I walk naked along the shore.
As smooth, as white as snow,
The sand stretched under the sun,
Black aching shoulders of rock rise in the silence.
Where is the island of peace,
The green hill with grasses?
Deep in the dangerous sea
The shark fin passes.

EAST
“In whatsoever state I am ...”

Now richly droops wisteria bloom,
While elegant bugs, on separate flourishing leaf,
Luxuriously maneuver.
If we are silent while we feel
How quiet is the night with jasmine,
How sweet the scent of rain upon the pepper tree,
If we but hold our breaths,
One second, while the wind is busy out to sea,
How sharp will seem the sting
Of slug and ant and snail attacking blossoms.

WEST
“therewith to be content ...”

The day breaks,
Out of infinity
And across the stunning fire and blue of sunrise
Death approaches.
Now I deny the dream, now I see how pitifully I fail.
Let the earth rising up to greet this landing
Reject me, let the winds
Move in out of space and claim me,
Let it cease, let it finish, let me not face this mystery.
But the plane landed.
Goodbye she said, into the day's brightness.
The plane departed

DR Cillaliz, what did you and your mom think of the results on DWTS?

DANCING WITH THE STARS SPOILER

I called her the minute it was announced.  She didn't answer the phone with "Hello" she said "Can you believe that?"

Brandy is a better dancer that Bristol, no question in my mind about that, but there has really been a negative piling on about why Bristol is still there and I think that fires up people to vote to keep her on.  From The View, to every news show, I've heard it mentioned.  They are showing websites about how to vote for her from Tea Party people. I actually feel sorry for Bristol, she's worked her butt off, has really improved and she's still bashed because of her mother.  The girl can't win even when she gets to stay on the show.  I didn 't vote at all, but was tempted to vote for her just because everyone has been so mean about her.

To those who say she doesn't deserve to be there....HELLO, Dancing With the Stars IS a popularity contest. That's the point. They want the ratings so they let people vote on who wins.  It's not really a dance competition at all.   Now if all the people who are so upset about her staying voted for someone else, she'd probably be gone.

That being said, mom thought it would be Bristol or Kyle.   I thought Bristol or Brandy.  Mostly because I think Kyle has a bigger following of people who would vote.  At least that's what it seemed like from the little mini bios they did about each one.  Brandy's attitude bugged me. She wanted it too much.  All she's said since day 1 is how important winning is for her.  Then of course Maks had his little temper tantrum, which may have hurt her too.

Other than that, I have no thoughts on the matter  ;D

DR Cillaliz, re: DANCING WITH THE STARS

Count me in as one who is quite unhappy that Bristol Palin is still on the show. And it really has nothing to do with her mother.  I am mad though that people who don't watch the show are cheating and power-voting for her. I don't think that anyone who does not watch the show should be allowed to vote.

She seems nice enough. But she does not have a lot of personality or charisma.  Also, I don't really care how much someone tries. She really does not have much musicality. I almost always cheer for the person who I think is the best dancer. And even though I think that Bristol has improved. She is so far behind the others in terms of ability it's ridiculous.

It will be a joke if she wins.  Because it does seem like a lot of her votes are not even for her, but from her mother's supporters. Plus some are voting for her based on "vote for the worst" or just cause they think it would be funny if she won (since she is the worst dancer).

I don't mind people voting for her if they actually like that she is a non-perfomer who tackled something very difficult. But to vote for her for the win? I will definitely be voting for Jennifer and Derek. Although I would not be totally unhappy if Kyle won. He's really improved. And he's actually quite good. Especially for someone who doesn't have the body type of a dancer.

Well, apparently trying to purchase tickets for Jews and Baseball is an ordeal that is quite annoying - whether I go or not is dependent on getting a call back from Laemmle Theaters.  I was given a link to their site, I chose the film and showing and theater, and I entered a cc number.  Then I received an "error" message that either the cc info was incorrect or the card was declined - since the latter would not have been possible, I tried again, being very careful - again the error message.  Then I looked at the zip code I'd put in and changed that to my home zip code instead of the mail place, and tried again - again the error message.  So, I called the bank to see what was up - what was up was that a charge from Laemmle Theaters had come through and that my balance already reflected that money being taken from my account.

Of course, they have my money and I have an error message and no tickets.  So, I called Laemmle, got a fellow from customer service on the phone - he explained to me that the charge is "pending" and could fall off by midnight if declined.  I explained to him that my balance is now twenty-four dollars less and that the error message was a little stupid since a CHARGE HAD GONE THROUGH - in other words, I entered no invalid information and there was obviously money from which to deduct the pending charge.  After all that, he told me he couldn't help me - the man who could help me was, of course, away from his desk.  I left that person a voice mail and, of course, have had no returned phone call yet.  If I don't within the next thirty minutes, then I shall call back and, I suppose, speak a little more vociferously.

If it doesn't get worked out, then I'm afraid that I cannot go to the Music Hall on Friday night because I will not give my business to incompetent people.

OTOH, DR Jennifer....this show is no better than the foolishness that is called "American Idol".  Far too many dolts with limited talent have walked off with the big prize, only to never be heard from again.

Bristol is a classic underdog.  You "do" feel sorry for her constantly being at the bottom...but you also know there's a point where she's going to start feeling awful for being proppped up for political reasons, rather than her abilities to dance.

That Bristol is there when her betters have fallen away is a travesty.

However, whenever the American public is left with the "decision" to vote for a favorite, the worst usually happens.  This is why the U.S. version of "Big Brother" does not allow the public to vote.  In the first season, the houseguests clung to one another as the votes, cast by the public, were revealed.  The show died in the ratings because anyone remotely in "conflict" with others was voted out.

Around the rest of the world, the public votes for who stays and who goes...and generally keeps the nasty pieces of work in the house and sends the good guys packing.  Europeans, especially, seem to embrace nihilism.

I think nihilism is fast becoming a part of the American way when I see the results of DWTS.  Bristol Palin is pitiful as a dancer...clunky, often graceless.  Oh, yes, she's determined, works hard, and has a few moments.  By and large, though, she lacks any personal sense of rhythm and I'm often reminded of a sack of potatoes being flung around, rather than a celebrity dancer.

I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

I think that Mitchum is terrific in THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, but I think he's even better in CAPE FEAR and, his finest performance, THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE.

Just spoke to the guy from the Laemmle, who sees that the charge went through and is surprised I got an error screen instead of the confirmation screen with bar codes and a receipt.  He suspects the pending charge will not complete at midnight, but won't know that until tomorrow.  But to save any problems, he's actually just put me on a comp list at the theater - that way I'll be sure to get in no matter what happens.

I'm baaaaaaack! I spoke to my landlord: the Oaf is leaving but there was no eviction so I can get over my anxiety that I caused his departure.

On a sadder note, the Men's Chorus put together a tribute on youtube for my late friend Fred. You can hear him sing solos poorly at Chorus events and see lots of photos of NYCGMC gatherings:

Jennifer, I completely understand how you feel.  I don't think she should win either (I'm also for Jennifer and Derek) , but, it is what it is... and the show is not a real talent competition, if it was the judges would decide it all.

As for the show, they said they had the most votes ever on Monday night.  I'd be curious to know what they had for ratings.  The producers can't be too upset that this controversy is bringing this much attention to the show.  Even it the voters aren't watching, they are going to the website or calling in to vote.  That can't hurt in attracting new sponsors and getting more $$ for the ad time.

I have another butterfly this morning. The next-to-last one should emerge today as well.

I had at least three caterpillars escape. Hopefully they formed chrysalises somewhere in the yard and will emerge on their own safely.

Oops, sorry - I forgot to log out when I left for CR.  Rather than sitting here like so much fish for the last couple of hours, I've done 20 minutes at 3 mph and a 1% incline on the treadmill, 20 minutes on the recumbent stepper (which reminds me of my family's old player piano), upper body exercises with 3 lb. handweights, and 3 laps around the walking track.

Interesting question that I've been pondering (off & on) today.

Actually, thanks to the advent of home video, I don't think that there's any vintage movie out that that I'd like to see that I haven't seen.

I honestly don't think IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE was meant for a Broadway run, but for regional Christmas productions. I could be wrong.

I sat through "Raggedy Ann" up in Albany when it had its first production. They were then taking it to the Soviet Union on a cultural exchange. I've got some Russian blood in me (from my grandfather Woloskiewitsch's side). And my only thought was, "What did the Russians ever do to us? Is this some new form of Cold War weapon?"

Keith's genealogy research has taken him to an interesting yet somber discovery.  He has found a listing of 60 family members who perished in the Holocaust.

Today he found the listing for my grand uncle (my father's father's brother).

Quote
Berko Wainer was born in Subrawsky in 1889. During the war he was in France. Deported with transport 52 from Drancy to Sobibor on 23/03/1943. Berko perished in the Shoah. This information is based on a List of deportation from France found in the Le Memorial de la deportation des juifs de france, Beate et Serge Klarsfeld, Paris 1978.

We are fairly certain he was not born in Subrawsky, wherever that is.

Today was supposed to be a relaxing day but was anything but.  The helper and I had some shipping to do, and then we continue to try and make our new postal system online work the way we want it to.  We're trying to get all the addresses we have (in an Excel spreadsheet) onto the postal site - this is not so easy, unfortunately - apparently it's a breeze with PCs but not Macs - but we have Macs not PCs so we're struggling - it's doable, though.  We had to get some supplies and I had to pay some bills.  Then I finally got out of here and had some lunch at Hugo's - the Caesar salad was great, as always, but the pasta papa was AWFUL - I ate it, like a dope (I was hungry and too ornery to send it back), but it just tasted nothing like it usually does.  I think I'm now through with that dish, as the preparation of it is just too erratic depending on the chef.  I then picked up a couple of packages and yet more bills and now I am damn well going to sit on my couch like so much fish.

Most states have free criminal record searches if you know where they've been.   I usually use FBI fingerprint checks for my immigration clients.  We can do it for $18, but you can't do that for a potential renter....

I've never really checked for bankruptcy, you'd want to check the federal district court website for your district, or wherever they lived.

I am so glad I didn't take Little Ricky to the vet tonight.   He's had plenty to eat, which is good because all food and water have to be taken away in 15 minutes.  He's on his roost right now, but I'll take him upstairs to my room abotu 8:00PM.   I don't think he'll be happy being shut in there, but it's WAY better than being in a cage at the vet, so I'm not going to feel very sorry for him

Tomorrow morning I'll take him to the vet at 8:00 AM.   I have a very busy day, then will pick him up at 5:00 PM and bring him home.  I think I'll keep him in my room instead of the guest room. Callie loves to sleep in the guest room and Ricky usually sleeps on my bed for part of the night, so I think he'll be more comfortable there

I'm baaaaaaack! I spoke to my landlord: the Oaf is leaving but there was no eviction so I can get over my anxiety that I caused his departure.

Would you actually feel bad if you caused him to get evicted?  He has made your life miserable and shown no remorse.

My sister got my niece's (the baby with roseola) school pictures today.  The people taking the pictures give a website with background options.

IMO these people are insane. I don't know who they take pictures for, but i'll assume they do little kids pictures and school pictures.

There were 100 choices. And none of them were plain backgrounds.  Everyone that was sort of nice had some weird object in the corner that was ugly. Most of them were either outdoor scenes (fields...) and a bunch were things like the eiffel tower (?).

But a lot of them were outdoor scenes with things like farm animals (cows) in the pictures. Now who on earth wants a school portrait where there kid is standing beside a fence with a cow. Another one had geese chasing the kid.

It was hilarious but ridiculous. My niece is wearing pink. There is one pink background that actually looks sort of schoolish. It has letters in the air. Another pink one makes it look like she is outdoor standing beside a cherry blossom true (nice but is this how one wants the kids school picture?).

Oy.

Was the Raposo Raggedy Ann an adaptation of the animated film he wrote the score for?  I love several of those songs, especially Blue, What Did I See, and Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers.  I'll discuss Wonderful Life in the notes tonight.

I think the musical came first, although I could be wrong. It was such a mess: doctors trying to kill the little girl who owned Raggedy Ann and Andy, a werewolf in cahoots with the doctors, a bunch of evil and sexy bats who tried to seduce and strip Raggedy Andy for a map to locate whatever object will save the girl from death. At the beginning of Act Two, the werewolf came down to the apron and howled. This litle kid in the balcony panicked, started shrieking and screaming "Get me out of here!" I thought, kid, you're speaking for all of us.

Cilla, do you recommend any background check sites?  The one I used for my current tenants charged me an arm and a leg and ended up not providing me with much info.  I want to know if they've ever been convicted of a crime and/or declared bankruptcy.

What state are they from?   Here's  the court records in Oregon http://courts.oregon.gov/OJD/OnlineServices/index.page? (http://courts.oregon.gov/OJD/OnlineServices/index.page?)

They're Oregonians.  It looks like you have to be "official" to register at the OJD site--they ask for your "organization."  I just thought maybe you had used a background check site before.

On the plus side, I got my DVD today of Braunfels' glorious 1920 opera Die Vogel. Jewish Walter Braunfels, like the forgotten Catholic Jaromir Wenberger, was one of the composers the Nazis suppressed but his works are now getting performances again. His opera Die Vogel is based on a comedy by Aristophanes and truly lush and gorgeous. I cannot wait to watch the DVD. Braunfels was the great Trude Rittman's mentor at the Cologne Conservatory; she adored him and I adored her.

So, Richard and I went to Dayton Mall this afternoon so I could visit the Lands End shop at Sears, a fruitless trip, alas.  I've lost enough weight for the pants in my closet to look like clown pants.  However, not enough to justify buying new ones.  Maybe my cardiac rehab nurse was right when she suggested I wait until spring to deal with the clothes issue.

The movie came first. I think most of the score was dropped for the stage show, which was illogically conceived. Terrible costumes, choreography and a cast that was uneven in talent. If I recall, many were not in the union, which prompted its own problems when it arrived on Broadway. The only song I remember was something called "Buttons and Bows" that was repeated one too many times for its own good.

You can see most of the film of Raggedy Ann and Andy on You Tube.  Didi Conn voices Ann and I think the boy who played Candide in the Harold Prince production plays Andy - it's not a good movie (my daughter and I finally walked out) but some of the songs are just aces.

Marius was sung by one of the Jonas brothers - the front seats were all occupied by fangirls who, whenever young Mr Jonas appeared on screen, would immedialtely start taking flash photos  and holding up their phones and video the movie -

the manager of the movie theatre happened to be in the audience in the row behind ours - he had a large uniformed security guard warn the girls to put their phones away - with limited success - but at the 10 minute intermission he walkewd down  and said "Not only is your behavior rude and distracting to the rest of the audience but it is also illegal - if there is an repeat of this behavior in the second half of the show, I will bring the house  lights up and you will be leaving in a police vehicle."

The second half of the show the audience was very well behaved

Oh, man. I've just returned from The Academy, where we screened our film. WOW!!! I don't htink it will ever look of sound as good as it did in that room; spectacular! I've noticed when I see movies in LA that they sound better than anywhere else, but this was superb!

We had a surprise---Al Rosen attended and was part of the group of speakers afterwards. We didn't know he was coming; it was a thrilled to meet him! We also had Mike Lieberthal and Shawn Green there. It was great to meet them all after looking at them on my laptop computer for months on end. They were all adorable, and Al said he cries every time he sees the film (in a good way!). It was so neat to see the film with them; it was the first time Shawn and Mike had seen it and they really loved it! The audience was very appreciative, and it was interesting to see the film with a NY crowd and what they bring to it, and then an LA crowd, since those two towns are such a big part of the story, especially with Sandy Koufax.

So I'm just kvelling in a major way!

Tomorrow we're shooting for our next film, and interviewing Lieber and Stoller. Can't wait to meet them!

Good Evening!

Bryn Terfel's recital at Carnegie Hall was truly wonderful. An all-Schumann first half, with Finzi, Ibert and a tribute to the Welsh-American baritone, John Charles Thomas, in the second half. -He sang Albert Hay Malotte's setting of "The Lord's Prayer" - it was truly the most beautiful and sincere version I've ever heard of that song. And, yes, it made me cry. -Oh, and he invited the audience to sing along with him during "Home On The Range". :)

And his pianist, Malcolm Martineau, was flawless as always.

Now THAT'S a Manager!

And a good review in the LA Times! They focused on the Ron Howard story, which almost got cut, but I fought for it and said that this is one of the stories that will be mentioned when articles are written about the film, especially out in LA. (Bet my partners won't remember that!)  :-)

I figured that it would work soonly.

Congrats, Edi!!

Now I'm waiting for Mr. Linton who should be arriving soon, via Shalom car service! How appropriate is that?
Wish he could have been there tonight but he's been traveling all day from his shoot in Boston.
