Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sublime (or not), and now it is time for you to post until the sublime (or not) cows come home.

Last night, I went to a local production of "How I Learned to Drive (http://www.prodigalsunproductions.org/)" by Paula Vogel.  I'd only heard of the play but didn't know what it was about....now I do. :o

It was very well done...quite powerful.  The lead woman was played by Heather, who played Joyce in TAO's The Brain From Planet X.  I only knew one other person in the cast (of five), but I knew most everyone in the audience (of fifteen).

We have no heat in the building although it's not terrible outside so at the moment we are OK.

They will fix the boiler as soon as the parts arrive, or so says the note on the wall in the lobby.

Good morning, all! It's weird to write "I slept late so the alarm went off at 7:15" because to me 7:15 sounds like the middle of the night. After 4 days of rising at 6:15. I did sleep later and I do feel quite refreshed this morning. So, I need to start gathering my things for Ohio and write a list of things to pack. When I arrive in Middletown, I will pick up toothpaste, mouthwash, etc. at the enormous pharmacy (CVS?) when you cross the railroad tracks.

I've got some Jerome Moross work I can take with me, and tomorrow I will do a round of laundry. I've got the Sondheim lyrics book and a couple of books on ballad gathering in the Appalachian Mountains from 1916-1950 that I will take but a good cheap novel would be fantastic as well.

Today, I have several errands to run, including a trip to my barber at Rockefeller Center and another round of NYPL research. I keep hopng, if I throw out requests for that damned missing scrapbook, someone will eventually locate it.

Some of those old Folkways recordings of Kentucky balladeers are a real effort to appreciate: way way way too much "raw" singing!

I'm trying to find a folk song dealing with the hardships of Appalachian existence, from coal mine or rail disasters to farming on the mountains, something that will bring a bit of reality to "let's celebrate Christas- ring the bells-feast and drink-praise the Lord!"  I need something that's gritty but also a beautiful and heartbreaking lament. I've found some great titles:
I Am A Poor Pilgrim of Sorrow
   Conversation With Death
   Kingdom Come
   Last Train from Poor Mountain
   Fountain Filled With Blood

Trouble is, some of the best titles aren't folksongs but songs written and copyrighted after 1924. Most of the authentic folksongs are variants of songs from the British Isles ("Barbara Allen," "Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies") brought over by settlers several hundred years ago.

the search continues!

Ha, ha. It's taking less and less time. It looks like I have a full head of hair but it's getting mighty thin up on top. It takes Yuri about 15 minutes to cut my hair. I'm thinking that in the spring I should just bite the bullet and get it cut very short. I don't want the shaved head look but I think shorter would be better.

It's a pretty heavy read John. I saw the Off-Broadway production with Mary Louise Parker. It's quite a piece for good actors.

I tried blowing the picture up, but it was blurry. I'd heard the story, too, and find it a fun rumor. He was probably around the day they were filming and just drifted into the background as an extra.

My niece's roommate is Peter Bellwood's daughter.  Pamela is her stepmother.  Peter wrote the book and lyrics for the musical GANTRY, and also co-scripted the HIGHLANDER films.  He started his career as a comedy writer, working with Dudley Moore, and I was positing that the HIGHLANDER films were actually comedies.  Clear as mud now?

I had a weird thing happen whilst out.  I got in my car, stepped on the brake and started it - and it would not start - totally nothing happening.  I jiggled the handle of the shift thing and that seemed to do it and it started.  I just called service and they thought it might have been that a button on the remote in my pocket might have gotten pushed accidentally, which would have caused it.

We used to have similar problems with our Subaru--just pushing the gear shift up fully into Park always solved the problem.

John G - not exactly a Christmas-y play, really.
Exactly. There was one Christmas I remember when I got the flu and miserable and alone. The only video I had was Kurosawa's film version of "The Lower Depths." I can tell you that was a happy Christmas.

XM has been playing a bunch of Glenn Miller Christmas tunes.  Some had Tex Beneke, but I wonder if these were post-WWII recordings, as they sounded awfully good.  I looked up stuff on eBay and don't see anything I've heard yet.  Weird.

George, Tim Hoban played the uncle.  I have known Tim for about 20 years and I have done several shows with him.  He is a good friend and a fine actor.

The actor is Thom Koutsoukos (aka: Thom Keane).  He starred in the first production of my 1-person play, JOLSON, which was done in Encino in the mid-1980s.  Thom, who worked (standby) in the original production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (w/Zero Mostel) is currently living in Florida.

I got my haircut this week.....that process probably takes longer for that to be done for you DR BEN.

You already wear your short, IMHO.

A few hours ago, I attended a "preview" recital by baritone, Randal Turner (http://www.randalturner.com/ja/index.php).  He presented a program of music by living composers. I admit, I was a bit hesitant to attend due to the amount of "New Music" on the program, but I'm very glad I went. He sang very well, and his selection of songs and arias was, well, well selected. -And three of the composers represented on the program - Clint Borzoni, Glen Roven and Jake Heggie - were also in attendance tonight. -And my friend, Jennifer Peterson, handled the piano accompaniments with authority and aplomb.

*Randal will be presenting this program in Oakland in two weeks, so, if you happen to be in the Bay Area and are interested in attending, CLICK HERE (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/128904).

Here's a pic of him from André Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire:

DR JohnG - There really was something quite special about that revival. I can still picture the staging of "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" in my head.

I'm also a little "worried" about the upcoming revival. I'm just trying to figure out how much "new" stuff they'll be putting into it.  Alas, I fear there's going to be a lot of interpolations and jiggering with the various books. Now whether that will be for the better or the worse, well.. We shall see.

Craig is now in Bakersfield, California.  At the rate he is going, weather permitting, he could be home by tomorrow night.  It would be best to introduce the dogs earlier in a neutral environment so they have time to become friends before bringing Yogi into the house.  There is also a trailer to unload into the storage unit.

The storage place is closed on Sunday.  We don't want to have to bring the trailer up to our house.  If it snows it will be difficult to get it back down as Craig doesn't have snow tires.  If it snows Craig & the trailer won't make it up here at all.

or their second, acapella [sic] CD?

You can click on the pictures! :D

I have the first one. The second one I had not heard about. The samples sound great.

Jose - Haven't they announced they're using the Weidman - Crouse book?

I remember reading recently that they were using the book that was used for Patti's version.
But that doesn't mean they won't play around with it. "Improve it."

Back from a nice dinner at Kate Mantilini's and then Jews and Baseball, with a really nice crowd.  I spoke to edisaurus briefly before the show, but she knew so many people there there was no real chance at chatting.  I never got to say hi to Greg - he arrived just before the film began.  I was hoping to hang out with them after the film, but the director did a Q&A that showed no signs of ever ending and because I had to finish prepping for tomorrow's event, I'm afraid that after fifteen minutes of questions and answers and several people still raising their hands, I had to leave.  I felt bad about it but there was nothing I could do.  A few of the early questions were fine, but then people just started spouting off, not even really asking questions.

I'll discuss the film itself in the notes, which I must write right now.

I was hoping that edisaurus would have time to do a meal on this trip but since I haven't heard a peep from her about that, I'm assuming it won't happen.
