Well, you've read the notes, the notes were quite Jewish and hit a home run, and now it is time for you to post until the Jewish cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ALTERITY!
-
Bruce, thank you SO MUCH for coming to the show! I was so glad to see you. We barely made it there in time because we were shooting up until 6: Robin Lerner, Kenny Hirsch and Gerry Goffin. I was up at 4:30 this AM and it's been non-stop. I was hoping to see you afterwards; I never expected the Q&A to go so long! Greg dumped me at the door to the theatre while he parked and then I had to wait in line behind a bunch of slowpokes just to get a ticket to my own film, so by the time I got into the theatre it was almost time to start the film!
Anyway, we've totally kept Saturday night free in case you wanted to have brunch, dinner, or brunch on Sunday. We're going out to a shoot in Van Nuys tomorrow but won't be there for very long, and it's flexible, so let us know what works for you; not sure what time your event is at LACC. It would be great to have more time to catch up!
-
And thank you for the nice report in the notes! The projection was really ugly; dark and purple-ish and they were screening on a pretty poor projector, I guess. A lady came up to me and said I should bug them to make it look better. The sound was pretty low, too, but I was afraid if I had it raised it would be too much. I guess I got spoiled by seeing it at the Academy and if the tickets weren't so expensive ($35) that would have been the way to see it. The only time I've seen it look worse was when it was projected from a power point laptop!
-
I can't believe how fast you got home and wrote these here notes!

Glad you like Michael Roth's score, too! He did a lot with very lilttle $$ and a small group of players. It's a lot of music!
bk met Michael at SACCO AND VANZETTI. Michael is a frequent collaborator with bk's pal Alice Ripley. And he also is the orchestrator, conductor and pianist for the HARPS AND ANGELS musical opening this week based on songs by Randy Newman.

I wouldn't make a documentary.
I'd make a mockumentary, based on my book, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD.
Actually, the project started out as a screenplay, then got turned into a book.

Lord amighty - I've been up since three-thirty. It's raining - I used to love the rain in the middle of the night, softly falling - always made me sleep wonderfully. On the one night I REALLY needed to sleep, the rain falling on the monstrosity of a house next door sounds like fifty people hammering - my house the rain falls gently - the house next door, disgusting. I'm going to be trashed for this event if I can't fall asleep soon.

I would like to send my bird to anyone who is trying to sleep. He decided to do his rooster routine at 7:15 this morning. He was ready to be up. I, on the other hand, wanted another hour of sleep. Guess who lost.
-
Good morning, all! This is my pre-flight day and, since flying terrifies me, I'll need a lot of vibes tomorrow morning! Today I slept late;one reason may be the fact that the Oaf Above Me arrived home with a door slam around 1:30. stomped around for a bit in heavy shoes to a lot of clatter and then left with another door slam. When he came home later, he walked around with his shoes off, quieter, but he's got a heavy tread or maybe there are fewer carpets now that he's packing.
So, today I have a bit of laundry, and a few errands. After that I will pack, go to the evening performance of BELLS ARE RINGING at Encores!, and return here to crash. Tomorrow morning I need to be up around 5:30 to arrvie at LaGuardia by 7:30.
DRs Laura and cillaliz, I hope Spats and Ricky are better today.
DR edisaurus, I hope that you and BK get a chance to catch up today or tomorrow.

Since I doubt he's working as a realtor between midnight and 5 am, I think he's selling pharmaceuticals in the clubs.

That sounds like fun. Hope it was better than my prom. "Once, Twice, Three Times a Lady" was the only slow song the band knew. They played it 15 times.
The rest of the classic hits in their repertoire included "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" and "Play That Funky Music, White Boy."

Hi, my name is Jeff and I am addicted to ebates. I have amassed almost $50 in cash back over only about a week, and I really haven't spent very much to do that. In fact I got DW Wife Betsy two wonderful presents at Piperlime, a gorgeous top and a really nice cardigan, and with their sale and the cashback, I spent around $20. TOTAL.
-
My review project is kind of interesting: a 1979 Canadian animated feature called ROCK & RULE. Has anyone seen/heard of it? Very peculiar little film, I'm kind of enjoying it.
-
My club gig went well last night. I can only say any signs of a recession were not apparent at this place--it was jam packed from the moment I got there until I left 3 hours later. The staff is really nice and the food was to die for. I got a Misto Salad, which had incredible candied nuts, dried cherries and an orange cognac dressing. I also ordered the bar nachos, which because they were only $7.95, I assumed would be maybe 10-15 chips with salsa. Good Lord, you would not have believed how huge this thing was--at least a foot high, I am not exaggerating. I had about 4 chips then told the bartender he could have the rest.
I did also indulge in a Spanish Coffee. The bartender made it rather strong, so I can only say my second set featured a number of chords and voicings that had not been invented yet. ;)

Here's what Jane read:
My club yet.

Travel vibes for DR Elmore.

Dame Ben Brantley has his likes and dislikes, as do we all, but I do agree with him about Kelli O'Hara.

Goodspeed has announced they're doing SHOW BOAT next summer on that tiny stage. Perhaps it will be retitled SHOW SKIFF?
-
BK, I haven't heard back from you--I am assuming your package got there safe and sound.
-
Package got here safe and sound. I got two more hours of sleep. Awaiting the arrival of she of the Evil Eye - I'll then shave and shower and be on my way.
-
I think the extreme rain noise from next door has to do with weird gutters or overhangs, which is also the title of my next novel.
-
I believe I can give BK a little PR by using his FNM experience as part of my ROCK & RULE review. That was another film that got the shaft from the studio (in this case MGM/UA) for completely tangential reasons.
-
Not to invite the wrath of BK (the title of *my* next novel), I must say that while BK's monstrosity next door is indeed two stories, something unusual for that neighborhood, it really isn't huge looking (at least from the street). I doubt it's more than 2000sf.
-
I in fact specifically asked BK to point out said monstrosity as I was expecting a McMansion of considerable girth.
-
I believe in actuality it's more like 3000 square feet - they pack a lot of room in these awful things because they build BACK and use most of the yard. And the previous house had a HUGE yard.
-
Afternoon all.
That is all.
-
The Oaf has finally arisen; I could hear his electric razor through the bathroom air vent about 10 minutes ago.
-
Lord amighty - I've been up since three-thirty. It's raining - I used to love the rain in the middle of the night, softly falling - always made me sleep wonderfully. TRAVEL VIBES FOR DR ELMORE~~~~~~~~~
-
DR Elmore, thanks for your concern about Little Ricky. He's doing great today. He's only had about 3 spats with his sisters and it's only 11:30 am! They aren't really fighting. The girls are trying to convince him that he'd be happier somewhere else and he's ignoring that and chasing them around the house. My guess is within a week we'll have a new normal around here.

Poor little Spats is so congested. But he is so much friendlier than he was with the whole family around. He'll get adopted in a snap if he keeps this up.

TOD: I think it would be cool to do a documentary about some really cool house and the people who lived there. Not just the original owners, but each of the people who lived there and how they changed the look, feel etc of the house as well as events that happened there and how it effected the people who lived in the house.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And I guess I have to adjust the time offset for myself here on HHW.
-
Sounds like last load may be ready to go in the dryer. Think I'll get something to eat and then venture out to see if I can find things for the new room....TV, Rug and a sleeper sofa. There's a sleeper sofa at my fav. furniture store's clearance store. I'm going to look at it. It may be one that's just really cheaply made, so that's why it's less expensive, if so, I'll move on and check out the other stores. I'm not ready for it yet, but figured I better look while the sales are on. I'm also looking for a winter coat. I've had the one I'm wearing now for the past 3 years and figured a new one would be a good idea. They are 60% off today. Time to look....

Thank You for all the Vibes last night. I believe they did their magic. There's still something funky going on with my right ankle, but it's more annoying and puzzling than anything else. I will survive.

bk and DR edisaurus - It sounds like last night's "Jews and Baseball" screening went very well despite the less than ideal "technical" conditions. Hopefully you two will be able to get together later today after the LACCTAA event.

bk - In your Notes you mentioned that you're going to have rehearsal for the next Gardenia show next Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving. -Does "Black Friday" - and the resulting traffic - not exist in Los Angels? Just wondrin'.
-
I didn't go to either of my proms either. If I'm remembering correctly, I was playing for a production of Baby during my Junior Prom, and a production of Sweeney Todd during my Senior. Not a bad trade-off, I guess. ;)
-
Hmmm, I'm sure Black Friday does exist, but I'm sure we'll be fine. It's only twenty minutes per person.
-
edisaurus, I don't have your cell number, so call MY cell - our event is done at two and we could meet soon thereafter for a late lunch or later for an early dinner.

I thought of a couple of other questions for our panel. I leave in about fifteen minutes, so if anyone has any good questions for directors, post them right now.
-
I can't believe how much that oaf gets on my nerves. Happy we won't have to hear about him anymore. But why is he so active at night? Shouldn't he be sleeping?
DR Jennifer - Well, if HHW can have Late Night Denizens, so can the City of New York - a.k.a. The City That Never Sleeps. ;)
-
Hmmm, I'm sure Black Friday does exist, but I'm sure we'll be fine. It's only twenty minutes per person.
Well, I guess you're not rehearsing near a shopping mall.
-
It sounds like it was, for the most part, a successful showing, Edi! Congrats to all involved!
Thanks, George! Although it didn't look great (The Quad in NY screened in blu-ray, much better!) it was a nice crowd. That and Kenneth Turan's great review in the LA Times made us very happy!
-
And speaking of Film Scores...
I'm not sure that this program is syndicated, but WQXR here in NYC broadcasts "Movies On The Radio" every Saturday night. Tonight's program is:
Alex North Centenary, Part 1 (http://www.wqxr.org/programs/movies-radio/2010/nov/20/)
Right now, only the playlist is listed, but I believe some of the record labels may be very familiar to most everyone here on HHW. ;)
The show should be available as an audio archive after it broadcasts later tonight.
Last week's episode was the world broadcast premiere of the new version of Franz Waxman's Sunset Boulevard (http://www.wqxr.org/programs/movies-radio/2010/nov/13/).

How about an early dinner? I thought you had my cell because the last 2 times I was here I tried to get together and you had called me back. (One time I was on the plane to go home!) I'll PM it to you and also see if your # is the same. When we were here in Jan about getting together, you were in the throes of writing the last book, and I know you are now swamped with the event/Gardenia/new release, etc. and I didn't know if you'd have time to see us, so that will be a welcome treat!

DR Cillaliz - The "If These Walls Could Talk" movies were wonderful. The first one dealt with abortion, and the second one with homosexuality. The first segment of the second one starred Vanessa Redgrave and Marian Seldes. It was truly heartbreaking. *And to tie it in to HHW - the opening scene of that segment has the two women watching a movie in a movie theater. The movie: "The Children's Hour".

When we were here in Jan about getting together, you were in the throes of writing the last book, and I know you are now swamped with the event/Gardenia/new release, etc. and I didn't know if you'd have time to see us, so that will be a welcome treat!
DR edisaurus - I believe I just texted your number to bk too. ;)

DRs FJL and George - RE: Anything Goes at RTC - I guess I'm wondering more about the song arrangements - and the orchestrations. I played keyboards for the bus and truck tour of that revival, and by that time the pit had been whittled down to eight pieces. I wonder if they're going to resurrect those charts. ???

WOW! Page 5 before 1:30pm EST on a Saturday? Not bad. :)

TOD:
The Andrea Doria
When I was looking up info on Leiber and Stoller before our interview, I found this interesting story on Wiki. Maybe it can be part of your doc:
In 1955, Leiber and Stoller produced a recording of their song, "Black Denim Trousers And Motorcycle Boots," with the white vocal group, The Cheers.[6] Soon after, the song was recorded by Édith Piaf in a French translation titled, "L'Homme à la Moto." The European royalties from another Cheers record, "Bazoom (I Need Your Lovin')," funded a 1956 trip to Europe for Stoller and his first wife, Meryl, on which they met Piaf. Their return to New York was aboard the ill-fated SS Andrea Doria, which was rammed and sunk by the Swedish liner MS Stockholm. The Stollers had to finish the journey to New York without the ship. After their rescue, Leiber greeted Stoller at the dock with the news that "Hound Dog" had become a hit for Presley.[5] Stoller's reply was, "Elvis who?"
Bazoom! LOL...

After this morning's exchange between DR vixmom and DR the vixter, I wonder if they would consider auditioning for "The Amazing Race".

Welcome ten GUESTS. I shall now be on my way to an event.
-
I am packed and ready to go. I do need to run out and purchase a new key and lock for my luggage. I ruined the old key trying to break down a door at Toyland and now it won't work. Oy, don't ask!

I forgot to mention that because BK stated that NYC is the only place that "supping" happens, Betsy is preparing a wonderful evening of soy and Bocas for BK's next visit to PDX. :)

As for the Topic of the Day...
I would like to see a documentary about professional accompanists, classical ones in particular. There are a couple of "names" out there: Graham Johnson, Malcolm Martineau, Brian Zeger, Craig Rutenberg, etc. However, I would like to follow some of the staff accompanists at one of the larger music festivals (Tanglewood, Music Academy of the West, Aspen, etc.). They have to learn so much music in a relatively short amount of time, and are paired with various vocalists and instrumentalists and personalities(!).
*On a related note/observation - I'm still wondering why in the press releases for new musicals - mainly on Broadway - the one staff member who is usually left off the production list is the Musical Director/Conductor. -Is it because there's no longer a Tony category for Musical Directors?
-
Two rather odd things happened last night at my club gig, both of which may be attributable to the Spanish Coffee I ingested. I was doing One Note Samba, which I've done countless times, and all of a sudden I found myself doing the Brasil '66 medley version which combines that song with Spanish Flea. I have never to my recollection ever played Spanish Flea (by BK's close personal friend, the late Julius Wechter), and yet there it was emerging from my fingertips. Weird. Then, later, without even thinking of it and I have no clew as to why, I found myself playing "Hello, It's Me" by Todd Rundgren. I don't think I've played that song since I was a kid when it first came out.

My singing beats description. I took a hammer to the key and now it works fine. I blame Jose. And Arnold, our cleaning man at Toyland.
Has anyone seen this Logo "reality" show, THE A LIST? What a bunch of whiney shallow people. Compare to these moronic queens Sarah Palin seems deep and intellectual.

DR JMK - That reminds me of one of the very rare nights I played "piano bar". It was in the hotel bar of the Galt House in Louisville, KY, after three long days of SETC auditions. I don't think I had a Spanish Coffee that night, but I know I had something similar. Or a couple of them. ::)

Well, after all these many days. I am finally up and about, the computer is back from the shop after a complete system re-install, the myriad of software re-installation and web-site re-registerimg complete - and, last but noit least, the wildlife attended to:

And now...
I guess I should get ready for my next 24 hours. A friend of mine is presenting Schubert's Winterreise (http://operamission.org/2010/10/17/winterreise/) tonight at The Gershwin Hotel, and I've been recruited as the official photographer for the event. ??? Before that I'm meeting up with some friends who are in town from Chicago for some catching up. And then once I'm back home tonight, I need to pack for my own trip back to Virginia tomorrow afternoon. I think - I may head down Monday. -Wow! I guess Thanksgiving is next week!?!?
-
Oh...

Welcome Back, DR DERBRUCER! -And Welcome Home to your Computer too!

Welcome back, DR der Brucer!
Thanx - how's your diet coming?

-
DR der Brucer - Thanks for asking! I will graduate from Cardiac Rehab Phase 2 on Monday and now have a routine established - just have to keep up my motivation. I'm not obsessing about the diet, but still have lost almost 20 pounds.

And how are YOU, DR der Brucer?

I just picked up the new Criterion version of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER at my local Barnes & Noble for 50% off.
:)
-
And how are YOU, DR der Brucer?
I'm hanging in there. Spent a nasty few weeks just fighting off a damnable cold - not bad enough to be be of real concern (no high fever, no chills, no aches) but a never ending cough and continued mild nasal congestion. My almost healed cracked sternum advised me to treat the symptoms aggressively which I did with every-four hour swigs of Tussin DM - which worked on the cough but kept me groggy for the entire time.
After my "Doctor, I had a chest pain the other day" saga you'd think I'd learn not to complain, but NO! On my last visit to my GPs officer (he moved on to greener pastures) and I now see a really nice Nurse Practitioner to whom I voiced my continuing concern with my inability to stand upright in one spot ( I can walk fine, but if I try and stand still, my lower body starts to tremble and crumble - unless I hold on to something, then I'm fine. That business resulted in my shuffling off to a Neurologist who was distressed by my over-all physical weakness (hey, I'm a coach potato, not a farmer!) so she is passing me off to the hospital for back Xrays and a lumbar MRI on Monday and she has set me up for a month of three-days/week of physical therapy (on a nice day, the PT office is within walking distance).
Your tax-dollars at work!

An offense that can score 4 touchdowns should be able to win games, but they need a defense that can keep the other team from scoring so much.

Travel vibes for DR Elmore. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can't believe how much that oaf gets on my nerves. Happy we won't have to hear about him anymore. But why is he so active at night? Shouldn't he be sleeping?
Since I doubt he's working as a realtor between midnight and 5 am, I think he's selling pharmaceuticals in the clubs.
Don't forget: my gain is Canada's loss!
Wow I didn't know you could get a greencard for doing that. ;)
Maybe he can move next door to me. :)

There is a big craft fair today in the same building as the library. Yeah!
There's a big craft fair here today too.
It was sort of hard to look around with my niece there.
Thank goodness she wanted to go see the cupcakes right away (they have a huge cupcake sale with very beautifully decorated cupcakes). There were less than 50 left when we got there (they had sold 2000). And they were about to run out (hours before the end of the fair). They have tons more for tomorrow. So i'm not sure why they didn't send someone get more and then make more tonight (it's for charity). I felt so bad for all the kids who got their to find no more cupcaktes.
It never occured to me that they would sell out and to go right away.
-
Hmmm, I'm sure Black Friday does exist, but I'm sure we'll be fine. It's only twenty minutes per person.
Well, I guess you're not rehearsing near a shopping mall.
That is the biggest shopping day in the US. I wish i could partake!

Travel vibes for DR Elmore.
And I hope you enjoy "Bells." I just don't get Ben Brantley's excitement over Kelli's voice.
Dame Ben Brantley has his likes and dislikes, as do we all, but I do agree with him about Kelli O'Hara.
I don't dislike her voice, but it doesn't thrill me to write valentines that way. Rebecca Luther's is more exciting to me.

Well the Vixter is not old enough. But what a great idea! Or how about DRs Laura and Sandra!

And for some reason there were hundreds of cars parked on the grass (at the fair). Granted it was cold out. And it is far to the back parking lot. But where would people get the idea to park on the grass?

Hi, my name is Jeff and I am addicted to ebates. I have amassed almost $50 in cash back over only about a week, and I really haven't spent very much to do that. In fact I got DW Wife Betsy two wonderful presents at Piperlime, a gorgeous top and a really nice cardigan, and with their sale and the cashback, I spent around $20. TOTAL.
Hi Jeff
I am willing to be likewise addicted - please IM me an evite so you get credit for signing me up

Vibes for Craig and Craig's Cat
Thanks for the vibes, they worked along with water & canned cat food. Seems our guess she needed fluids was correct.

Jane, Spats has a cold. He'll be ok in a few days. He has ten days of medicine to take before he can go back.
Vibes your son and the critters make it home safely!
Enjoy Spats while you have him. :)
Thanks. Watching the weather report Craig might be stuck in Redding for a couple of nights. At the moment travel north of there requires chains. We will know more in a couple of hours.
-
I'll have gotten under three hours of sleep.
Oh look Mom. You have sleep-deprived buddies. Will someone tell her to stop working herself to death? It's not working from me, and my Dad and Nana have been yelling at her for it. And then at me, because she's not there and too busy to be yelled at at night. I don't see her at night anymore!!! I need an intervention!!! DX
DR Vixmom, do you hear your daughter? SLOW DOWN!!!!

Bryan used to be like that, awake and night & sleeping the mornings away. I'm sure he was not an oaf.

Poor little Spats is so congested. But he is so much friendlier than he was with the whole family around. He'll get adopted in a snap if he keeps this up.
Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. I hope he feels better soon.

I am so excited!! Today's junior prom, and I get to go with all my junior friends again!!! Hopefully it will be as fun as last year, but with out the set backs of las year as well. :D
Then we must have photos! Have fun!!!
Your new avatar is cute.

Sandra is fine. She says there are no good stories to post now working where she does. They don't play "My Horse is Your Mother" there.
Tell her to find a more interesting job so she can entertain us.;) Has she considered going back to school?

TOD: I think it would be cool to do a documentary about some really cool house and the people who lived there. Not just the original owners, but each of the people who lived there and how they changed the look, feel etc of the house as well as events that happened there and how it effected the people who lived in the house.
There was a fictional "If These Walls Could Talk" years ago on HBO. I would want mine to be nonfiction, but it's the same idea
That doesn't sound very exciting when I write it down, but the idea in my head is wonderful
I watched them both more than once. I think of the segment with Vanessa Regrave and Marian Seldes whenever I hear about rights for same sex couples. They were incredible

The bartender made it rather strong, so I can only say my second set featured a number of chords and voicings that had not been invented yet. ;)
Good news.
Funny.
-
Not to invite the wrath of BK (the title of *my* next novel), I must say that while BK's monstrosity next door is indeed two stories, something unusual for that neighborhood, it really isn't huge looking (at least from the street). I doubt it's more than 2000sf.
Interesting. I pictured it MUCH larger.
-
I believe in actuality it's more like 3000 square feet - they pack a lot of room in these awful things because they build BACK and use most of the yard. And the previous house had a HUGE yard.
How about a photo?

Welcome back Der Brucer!!! You were missed! How's Woody?

Ok, all you techo people I need help. I'm looking for a TV for the room I'm redoing. I'm thinking a 32 inch. Now, I can't get cable in there, so I'm thinking about a wifi tv like the Vizio. I saw Google TV today, it was pretty cool. But now I realized that a Blu-Ray player also has internet apps or can get me to the internet. I mostly want to be able to watch tv or movies on the net.
SO, what I'm trying to figure out is if it's better to get the internet in the tv or to get a tv and a blu-ray separately that will wifi with my network so I can get movies etc that way.
Any suggestions, advice etc from those in the know would be great. I don't have a blu-ray player, so that maybe the best way to go.
-
Oh yeah, and I don't want to spend much money ;) Any ebates for me?
-
Sigh, we just spoke to Craig. He should make it to Redding and then the road is closed. He doesn't want to sit in a Motel 6 until Monday & discussed going west to the coast & then over to us. I'm not sure we convinced him it would be worse than staying put.
Hopefully the hotels are not filled with stranded travelers.

Vibes to Craig and his critters~~~~~~~~~~~

DR Jane - with 2 sticks of margarine, my caramel corn is not heart-healthy, so I eat very little. But not none ;)
-
Can you post your recipe?
-
well I have done it again - dropped my camera in the driveway without noticing and then ran it over with the car
that is what happened to my last camera
-
Oh, I didn't post about my afternoon and shopping trip. I went to look at sofa sleepers. The one I saw is Ok, but I'm not in love with it. It's in the clearance store but I can order it any time. The fabric is sort of canvas. It's something that I'm concerned little claws may be able to rip.
As I was pondering all this, my phone rang. It was Edith and she said her husband was ready to stop over at my house. He was really coming over to look at the furnace. I had considered waiting on moving the beds, but decided since there was someone here who had the ability to help me I wasn't going to let the opportunity pass me by.
Long story short, the bed I want to give away is now in the basement and I've called my nephew to tell him he can take his time finding someone to come and get it. The bed from the guest room has been moved into my room. I still need to wash all the bedding and remake the bed tonight, but YEAH!!!!! There is no bed in the guest room!!! I am now ready to really work in there over the Thanksgiving weekend. I'll have three days to work (one to eat turkey with mom and dad) .
The cats are totally freaked out. They love sleeping on the bed in that room.
-
Thanks Cilla.
-
I looked at TVs. I like the Sony Google TV set up, but to watch TV with it you really need to have cable or satellite. I'm wanting to use this with a TV that I can just pick up some over the air channels. I'm seriously considering a Vizio with internet apps or getting a tv and a blu-ray that gets internet apps. If I want a 32 inch vizio with the apps I need to get up early and go to Sams on black Friday. It's one of the loss leaders

Short version of earlier post for DR JANE - Edith's husband helped me move the bed out of the guest room and into the basement..now I can start working in the guest room
-
Caramel Corn
20 cups of popped popcorn
2 sticks margarine
2 cups light brown sugar
1/2 cup light Karo syrup
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of cream of tartar
Put popped popcorn in a greased roaster pan, sifting out unpopped kernels.
Melt margarine in a medium saucepan and stir in brown sugar, Karo syrup, and salt. Bring to a full boil, then boil for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add vanilla and cream of tartar. Pour syrup over popped corn and stir.
Bake in a 250o oven for 1 hour, stirring at 15 minutes intervals. Remove from oven, cool, and break apart. Store in air-tight container.

well I have done it again - dropped my camera in the driveway without noticing and then ran it over with the car
that is what happened to my last camera
There's something wrong with this picture!
-
They aren't staying over night. I do have two futons and an air mattress and wouldn't have moved the bed if they wanted to stay. They want to come spend the day and go home. I do it up there a lot. Dad has a very bad cold and the weather forecast for Wednesday night is really iffy, so I'm not sure they will come on Thursday. If it's questionable at all we've agreed they won't come. If the weather clears, as is expected, they will come on Friday or Saturday

Oh, if groaning were only allowed here... :)

der Brucer? Oh, yes, der Brucer - nice to see him on the board again.

I gotta tell you.

Actually, I think that sounds like a very cool idea!
-
We may have freezing drizzle tonight. OH now they are saying we may have significant snowfall next week.
-
Thanks Ginny!
You're welcome and good luck! Be careful with the syrup, because it's very easy to burn it. And wear an oven mitt when you stir - that syrup is HOT and can really burn your hand
-
The event was really fun - we ended up with about thirty people, which was fine, but, for me, still disappointing. There were only about eight students from the department there, and a total of one alumni. But the panel was great - lots of great insights into their very different processes as to how they choose shows, what they look for in auditions and all sorts of other interesting things. Lots of fun stories and I think they all had a very good time. And to the LA actors, students and alums who never seem to get off their collective ASSES to actually attend something that might be very beneficial to them - well, they reap what they sow.
-
I'm meeting edisaurus and Greg at Musso and Frank at five-thirty. I will undoubtedly have my beloved combo Louis.

Don't think I'll do it tonight. I bought some chocolate chips yesterday and I've been thinking about chocolate chip cookies for days. I may make some to take to my mom either to take home after Thanksgiving or at Christmas. She loves carmel corn and so do I!
-
I am ready to head out to Encores! but suddenly I am feeling a bit puny. I'm not sure if I should head on down or hang around here for a bit longer. Damn!
-
Glad the event went well, BK, despite the turnout. Glad you are able to meet up with Edi and Greg
-
VIBES THAT YOU FEEL WELL IMMIEDIATELY TO DR ELMORE ~~~~~~~~~~
-
Indeed DR JRand, I still feel like crap. I have been sick since Monday with a terrible cold or something. Blech. Yesterday and today were the worst days..I am hoping I start feeling better now.
And to top it off I threw my back out yesterday and it hurts like a sonofabeach! I have a heating pad on it today and that seems to help a bit.
Now off too watch somemore Bollywood movies. That is all I feel up to doing.

Now here's a TSA pat down nightmare. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40291856/ns/travel-news/?GT1=43001 I'm glad I'm not flying right now

I'm staying home. If it's something I ate, life will not be pleasant tonight; and if I'm coming down with somethng, perhaps I can fight it off. I am not amused

DR elmore I'm glad you are staying home if you are ill.
FEEL BETTER FAST!!!

So sorry to hear this. My sister did something similar (she slammed her door on hers).
I guess no more cameras near the car. :(
-
Feel better vibes for DRs MBarnum and Elmore!
Ditto.

Watching an old Western I picked up at Costco called "Lust for Gold." Glenn Ford and Ida Lupino are top billed. I've seen Glenn, but I haven't seen Ida yet. She's the reason I bought the movie. Oh well. It's not too bad.
-
Feel better vibes for DR MBarnum!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My sister is having terrible back problems for the last few days. She was in so much pain that I brought over my back magic. I figured that I could survive without it for a few days. But boy do I miss it. This thing has done wonders for my back (i've had lower back problems fo a while). I use it twice a day. I've used it every single day since I got it in August. And my back has been so much better!
I've sure missed it today.

This is really horrible. There needs to be something they can do for people with medical conditions.

I really wanted to see BELLS ARE RINGING!
At the present, my stomach isn't doing anything horrid, it just lets me know that it is thinking about acting up. On the plus side, I am packed and ready to go, so I can go to bed in another hour and get plenty of sleep before the alarm goes off at 5:30.
-
Hmmm...
After this morning's exchange between DR vixmom and DR the vixter, I wonder if they would consider auditioning for "The Amazing Race".
:)
Well the Vixter is not old enough. But what a great idea! Or how about DRs Laura and Sandra!
I have never seen Amazing Race - do we have to eat bugs? I am not going on any show where I have to eat bugs
You don't have to eat bugs. But occasionally they have to eat something gross. I think you have to be 21.
-
DR Elmore - I'm sorry you're missing BELLS ARE RINGING, but glad to hear you're going to get a good rest before tomorrow's travels.
-
Nice to have you back derBrucer :)
Did I miss any Sherlock pictures?
der Brucer
I don't think so. I surprised Bruce in Portland last weekend & there were a few photos from the weekend. Bruce took one of me with my favorite little girl, human not dog.

I used Vixdad's camera

Lovely photo of DR Vixter and her friends. I like that they each of their own unique look.

The same girls singing at Tanger today
-
DR Vixmom - thanks for the pictures of DR The Vixter and her friends. They look beautiful in both settings and like they're having a great time!

I love the contrast photo. :)

A FaceBook friend just asked this question
"If I press 1 for English, why do I still get someone I can't understand??"
Just had to share. :)

It's in my "to read" stack - should I read along with you? I've been trying to decide what to read next...
-
never heard of it
-
We are on the phone with Craig discussing the weather. Kitty is entertaining him. She enjoys exploring the hotel rooms every night.
Is he in a motel room? Hope he's not risking it if the weather is bad
-
DR Vixmom - thanks for the photos!! I like Vixter's dress the best, although they are all very beautiful
-
We are under a freezing drizzle warning until 6 AM. Glad I don't have anywhere to go tonight
-
I won't be getting the book until I go into town again. I don't have to finish reading it until December 13th so there is plenty of time. It would be fun to read it together.
I will probably finish reading a book tonight & begin THE NEIGHBORS, the third book in the series DR Jennifer got me started on. Neighbors should be a quick read or I will have to put it aside to begin Lacuna.
-
Our Vixter is all grown up.
I guess she was last year, too.
-

No he is not risking it. Yes he is in a motel, hopefully for no more than two nights. Craig asked if he can put chains on a trailer. Keith did some research & couldn't find a definite answer & told Craig if he does put chains on & drives not to tell us. We don't think he will but you can tell how badly he wants to get back on the road.

TOD:
The Andrea Doria
I had a partially finished book I was writing that took place on the Andrea Doria on that fateful cruise.
-
Tell him not to take the risk, Jane. He is safe in a motel room. He may not be safe if he gets on the road.
-
Good morning, all!
TRAVEL VIBES FOR DR ELMORE!
-
I assure you, Craig knows we don't want him driving & he knows he shouldn't. If it looks like he will be trapped more than a day I think he might head to the coast & take the long way to us. Tomorrow he will try and sleep in. Yogi, the dog, is still on east coast time so we shall see.
-
Glad Craig is in a motel. I've been snowed in more than once. I always really want to get going, but later am always glad I didn't
-
Well, tonight's batch of caramel corn is a hit! I'm going to fix a tin to take to the cardiac rehab nurses on Monday (my last day) and the rest is for Richard and Rob.
-
Yes, Craig is doing the right thing by staying put.
-
Glad Craig is in a motel. I've been snowed in more than once. I always really want to get going, but later am always glad I didn't
I'm sure. Of course a nice hotel is more fun to be stranded ;) He doesn't have a pair of waterproof shoes and his umbrella broke in the wind. I suggested he ask at the desk if they have an umbrella he can use. I don't know if motels provide them like hotels do.
-

Lucky people.
-
If Craig had known he would have a room with a frig he would have purchased more at the market. To go anywhere he has to put the pets in the car and pull a trailer. Last Keith checked it was beginning to snow in Redding. I hope there won't be much snow tomorrow.

I have a minor complaint/statement.... I prefer doing the injections in my thigh vs my stomach. I'm supposed to rotate locations during the month to avoid problems. I might change the pattern after I complete the first month.
-
Has anyone read THE LACUNA? It is my next discussion book and I'm really not looking forward to reading it.
Yup. It was a typical Barbara Kingsolver novel. Very leftist, but dense and good. Great portrait of, among others, Frieda Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Trotsky. In addition to communism, it deals with gay rights, the McCarthy era and great food. I hope you have more than a couple of weeks to read it, because it really can be dense and shouldn't be rushed.
It wasn't my favorite of her books, but it's her best fiction since "Pigs in Heaven."
-

It's OK to complain about having to do that. It doesn't sound pleasant.
-
DR Jane - you have every right to complain about the injections. I think you're very brave to be doing them at all.

I agree with Ginny and John G

Is it my immagination or has there been a big upturn in violence lately

I saw a story about her on MSNBC in the cardiac rehab gym yesterday - yes, the TV was tuned to something other than Fox News.

It really isn't that bad & only stings for a little while.

If you saw the size of the needle you would laugh, it is extremely small. The best part is it is a pump not a regular syringe.
-
Having been through 2 DVTs, which required shots in the stomach, I can guarantee you I would not laugh.

Kingsolver used to be one of my favorite writers. But her recent novels, like "Prodigal Summer" and "Poisonwood Bible," were so pedantic that they were laughable in spots. But her "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" marked a return to form and "Lacuna" has some powerful moments. But if you don't want to read something, well, you just don't want to read it. It's one of the reasons I dropped out of my book club. One vapid member, who only found her opinions from reading reviews, kept picking the most dreadful books.

OK - I've cooked and watched the Cincinnati Bearcats demolish Rutgers, so I'm going to bed - 'night!

I am on my third Bollywood movie for today.
I watched one fun romantic film from 1969...then a 2010 Tamil language film which was only so so...now I am back to 1970 with the film KHILONA...and so far it is quite good, and beautifully photographed.

Vixmom, I believe I've sent you an invite. Otherwise, you/anyone can just click this link:
http://www.ebates.com/rf.do?referrerid=1zf4YlchPPV1d%2BnxJwJzNw%3D%3D
I'm telling you this site is incredible. Hundreds of stores available (including eBay) and all you need to do is simply access them thru ebates to get your $ back. Every day they have a "daily double" for a different retailer where they double the standard cashback. Yves Rocher was 40% back the other day.
-
Just to alleviate any concerns--there's absolutely no cost at any time to join.

thank you!

Good Evening!
Tonight's "Winterreise" event was very good. -And I had totally forgotten that another friend of mine from Chicago was in town this weekend too and was attending tonight too.
-
DR elmore - I"m sorry you had to miss Bells Are Ringing earlier tonight, but there's nothing wrong with getting a good night's sleep before a travel day.
*Alas, I, too, started to feel "puny" a few hours ago. -I actually think there was some major change in the barometric pressure messing up everyone's sinuses. A couple of people in the audience all started sneezing around the same time. It was kind of weird.
-
DR vixmom - I'm sorry to hear about your camera. However, I'm glad you were able to use the vixdad's camera so that you could post those pics of DR the vixter and her friends.
-
I had a wonderfully wonderful dinner at Musso and Frank with edisaurus and her ever-lovin' Greg. Edi and I had the combo Louis - when I've had this lately, I've been very good about not going too heavy with the dressing - until this evening. I was a right pig. I had the bread pudding for dessert and I am now officially losing ten pounds in a hurry.
-
We went to Amoeba to meet their friend and I still had a lot of credit left, so I got a few things including the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland film.

DR DERBRUCER - Not only did I see that special supplement, I actually went back for the official Grand Opening/Homecoming of the new space. It truly is beautiful.
