Title: A BROADWAY LOVE STORY
Post by: bk on November 23, 2010, 12:05:25 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both Broadway and a love story and also long, and now it is time for you to post until the Broadway cows come home.

Yes, Broadway Love Story is a very good CD.  I haven't played the whole thing for awhile, so I'll have to dig it out.  I'm glad you reminded me.

I saw ALICE IN WONDERLAND when it first came out on DVD.

I was really enjoying it until she fell down the rabbit hole, then story was replaced by CGI.

I watched an excellent movie last night, one of the best I've seen thus far this year.

It's a black comedy called LEAVES OF GRASS, and it stars Edward Norton in a dual role.

The movie features Tim Blake Nelson, who also directed, Keri Russell, Richard Dreyfuss and Susan Sarandon.

It's very reminiscent of the Coen Brothers' movies.

Good morning, all! I survived my trip to Miami University although I'm sure I've infected everyone I met with this cold. Yesterday, I felt terrible, but today, after 10 hours of sleep, I'm feeling pretty good.

I arrived in Oxford around 10:45yesterday morning, went to the Theatre Dept office for a visitor's parking pass, and then spent an hour in the Music Library looking at Appalachian folk song collections and talking to Barry, the librarian, who's taking my manuscripts into the library's collection.

At 11:50, I met Liz Mullenix, director of the MU Theatre program and we drove uptown to meet Janet Stuckey for lunch. Janet is the MU Library peron in Special Collections who's receiving all of the things I'm shipping. There is one crisis: they don't want a ton of books I've sent because of financial crises in the Ohio State educationbal system where the fools keep pouring the money into athletics while removing funding elsewhere. So, part of this is downsizing linbraries. I don't understand exactly what's going on, but the school libraries can no longer possess multiple copies of books, so a lot of books on Sondheim, Weill, musical theatre, etc. that are already in the collection are being rejected. I don't know how this bodes with signed editions, since a lot of books are signed, so I need to call Janet and address that issue.

After lunch, I met Janet at the library, she showed me what's been done so far with what I've sent and I spent the afternoon going through two cartons of questions: one was a simple "toss it out" response and the other was a filled box of correspondence. So I went through the items, commenting on who was the sender, how they related to my life, and Janet wants me to begin a history of these people as a reference guide.

After that, I met Liz and Gion of the Theatre Dept  with a few students  and a new acting teacher, my friend Steve Wilson, whom several years ago I tried to bring in to audition for the NYMF production of The Brain From Planet X, but he was on tour  playing the Dick Van Dyke role in CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (bringing up yesterday's Sherman Brothers). This year I tried to land him the role of Nicky Arnstein for the Lyric Stage of Dallas' production of FUNNY GIRL, but he was playing Superman in a production at Cincinnati's Playhouse In The Park! It was a really good visit, and I had a lot of fun.

I got back here, feeling poorly, watched tv with Jo, and went to bed around 10.

Today, I've got to call some friends and I need to purchase a new watchband, although I have no idea where. DR Ginny, any advice?

DR cillaliz, are you sure that Bristol Palin's "surprise envelope" wasn't prompted by her vicious homophobic coments on Facebook? A rotten apple doesn't fall far from a rotten, narrow-minded redneck tree.

DR CharlesPogue, go to Amazion.com, look up Christianne Noll, and on the album's info, you will find several (13 at the moment) used copies through Amazon marketplace, which is where I pick up the out of print copies I hand out as demos. I usually get the "Used-Like New" or "Used-Very Good" items since everything I did with BK is OP now. Check the vendor's rating as well.

Thanks Jose.  The cats' name is Kitty which began as a nickname over her original strange Romanian name.  For now Kitty is confined to a bedroom & bathroom.  We are concerned Yogi might try to protect her from Sherlock when he attempts to play with her.

My Gaydar told me that years ago!

I am back from the maladroitly named "Middletown Mall," which is to shopping centers what I am to Marie of Roumania. Neither jeweler carries watch bands so I must wait until I return to Manhattan. I did find a quilt I liked and purchased it.

Then on my way back to Randy's, I drove through what was in 1960 the thriving metropolis of Middletown, OH. I counted a grand total of five people on Central Avenue, the main street through a deserted town. Very sad.

Target is out by Lowe's?

I drove by dad's home, and I didn't recognize any of the territory. The "For sale" sign is missing. I swear these two ass brothers of mine don't want to sell the piece of land at all: won't involve a realtor, won't do anything to promote a sale, and they clearly think a deal will fall in their laps. I want so much to dig up my dad to kick his ass for taking such stupid action just before he died.

Randy and Jo's house is in a valley below the main road and the phone reception is crap. I have to go out in the yard to make phone calls. So, I'm going outside now.

BK, love the story about A Broadway Love Story.  Next queston is: How does one acquire a copy of  this?

DR CharlesPogue, go to Amazion.com, look up Christianne Noll, and on the album's info, you will find several (13 at the moment) used copies through Amazon marketplace, which is where I pick up the out of print copies I hand out as demos. I usually get the "Used-Like New" or "Used-Very Good" items since everything I did with BK is OP now. Check the vendor's rating as well.

DR elmore - "AmaZion.com"?  Hmmm... ;)

Okay! Okay! I know my typing sucks!

Quite the contrary--AmaZion.com is the Mormon "one stop shopping" site.  :)

DR JMK - Thank You! -That's the response I was looking for. :)

My friend, Andy, who lost his beloved dog, Copper, a few months ago, adopted "Lauren" this past weekend. She's a rescued greyhound, and she's actually not grey - which I didn't realize was possible(?).

Has anyone heard this 3-disc compilation of Kay Thompson? I'm reading Sam Irvin's new biography of her.

Sam Irvin, incidentally, was the man responsible for getting me into recording. He was producing a mystery film around 1982, and my friend Jimmy Simpson, best friend of Valerie Mahaffey, kept telling Sam that he should hire me to do the score. I lost the job because I had no sound studio experience and Sam told me that he couldn't waste time and money on a novice. I started working with Ben Bagley immediately. Sam owes me one!

On another tangent, where is Jimmy Simpson now? I haven't seen him in 25 years.

On my social calendar, I will have dinner tonight with my friends Alan and Liliane Freeman. DR Ginny, what are you and Richard doing Friday night?

OH!!!

Mr. Peanut Is Gay! (http://www.newyorker.com/humor/2010/11/29/101129sh_shouts_rudnick)

;D

My Gaydar told me that years ago!

I am back from the maladroitly named "Middletown Mall," which is to shopping centers what I am to Marie of Roumania. Neither jeweler carries watch bands so I must wait until I return to Manhattan. I did find a quilt I liked and purchased it.

Then on my way back to Randy's, I drove through what was in 1960 the thriving metropolis of Middletown, OH. I counted a grand total of five people on Central Avenue, the main street through a deserted town. Very sad.

I remember the Middletown Mall. About the only thing I ever bought there was a longneck for lunch.

Anyway, about 10 minutes after I got the call to not come into work, my dental hygienist called, asking if I wanted to come in early.  My appointment was for 11:00 a.m., and all her morning appointments cancelled.  I was the next one in.  I said that I'd get there as soon as I could (I hadn't even taken a shower yet).  The drive in was quite easy, except that my washer fluid nozzles were frozen and there was a lot of debris caking up my windshield as I drove on the freeway.  I could barely see! :P When I got to my dentist's place, I backed into the parking spot so that the front of my car would face the sun.  It worked!  The sun melted the washer fluid nozzles enough that I could wash my windshield. :D

A few of the dishes I bought in Mexico. There may be massacres across the border -- the day before we went to Matamoros, 58 people were killed., But did that stop me from going to buy liquor and dishes? No. Although the story of more dying the day we were there and even more on the day after -- well, that stopped me from going back from Matamoros, but not Progresso, which is more stable. And had really good deals on dishes. And liquor.

A bottle of reposado tequila on one trip, a bottle of Chambord (largely to cook with) on another. The third trip I picked up a gift for a friend: It was Controy, the Mexican version of Cointreau. You can't buy it in this country because of the trademark infringement with the name, but the flavor is much better. It's a brighter, fresher orange flavor. It's also less expensive, even if you have drive six hours to get to the border. Controy makes a wicked margarita.

Back from visiting my cousin.  Mostly it was a few people who'd been at the service.  I missed some people like Ruta Lee, who apparently was wearing some sort of huge hat - to which we all need to respond: Does anyone still wear a hat?  The answer is a resounding yes, Ruta Lee-wise.  I'm told the service was very nice - I was also told that my ex-wife was there - it was predictable, and rather than get the usual withering looks from her I'm glad I wasn't.  The only time the withering looks weren't in evidence was when her father died and I went to that funeral - she knows all too well how I feel about funerals, so the fact that I came was meaningful to her.

I am back from a very long coffee visit with Becky and my errands.

DR Elmore - you might try Edgewood Jewelers (ask Jo, it's in a strip behind UDF in Trenton) for your watch band.  One of the jewelers there is Don Miller, owner of the former Miller Jewelry here in Middletown, where Richard and I bought our wedding rings.  Or Target - that's where Richard finds bands for his watch.

It was really hard not to load up a plate of food while I was at my cousin's - they had all my aunt's favorites - chopped liver, herring in sour cream (both of the latter are the best you'd ever eat), coldcuts and all sorts of other goodies.  I knew I had dinner to do so I just couldn't go there.  Instead, I had three almonds and one chocolate covered raisin.

John, do you need my address for my Christmas present?

Thank you all for your concerns about my well-being.  Last night I got the bright idea to go and turn on my electric blanket up to 5.  An hour later the power went out for good, but I was able to climb into a nice warm bed.

They just said on the news that on November 3 we had a high temperature of 74 degrees.  Today we had a high of 25.  Tonight's low temperature should be 13 degees for Tacoma; and lucky Geroge will have a low tonight of 10 degrees.

Darn, I am pretty sure I can't go to Portland in April.  Will you be there?

Why?

Why can't I go?  I have plans on the 4th in the opposite direction.

Yum tequila, as long as it doesn't have a worm in it.  I'm not a fan of liqueurs, wicked margarita's YES :)
Tequila shouldn't have a worm in it. Mescal does. Different drink.

I use a lot of liqueurs in cooking. Too sweet for sipping in my book.

I thought it was tequila someone gave us with the worm in it.  Because of the worm I didn't look at it closely.

Sorry for the question.  It's just that I don't have any idea what I am doing November 24, which is tomorrow; let alone have the slightest idea what I will be doing in April.

Edi knows how much I want to see this movie and I hate that two special events are at the same time.  Being that it is April I might end up going nowhere if we have a snow storm.

I'm watching "Glee" and Carol Burnett is the guest as Sue Sylvester's mother.  They're in the auditorium singing "Ohio" from Wonderful Town but you can see reflections of the camera crew in the very polished piano! :o

That's OK. I didn't much care for them when I first moved to Texas. The more I saw them, however, the more I began to like them. The same with a lot of other Southwestern stuff that I didn't must care for about 10 years ago.

Watching "Letters to Juliet" right now. It's more charming than I thought beforehand. Though the reason I got from the library -- Vanessa Redgrave -- is the best reason to see the movie.

I'ts cold here tonight.  Maybe down to 30 degrees (cold for me).  Maybe ? snow on top of the mountains in the morning.  The full moon has just been beautiful during the morning the last few days.  I forget to look out the window at night, but I get to see it every morning from the freeway.  ;D'

Sorry I was E and T, tonight...while the DWS people were cutting the rug...I was literally cutting the rug.  The yucky pink carpet is gone.  It was pretty disgusting as I cut it up and hauled it out.  It took me a while to get all the tack strips off etc.  The floors aren't perfect underneath but the hardwood floors look pretty good.

I'm kind of tired and a little sore, but now that the bed is in the basement and the carpet is out and that mess is cleaned up, I have decided I don't really care if i get any more done in there over the weekend.  So, I'm going to just enjoy some time puttering, reading, dining with mom and dad and relaxing with the cats.   I may shop for a rug, but I am not going to any more with stripping wall paper and painting, that is just going to have to wait.

Vibes for Paul would be appreciated for tomorrow.  He's going to have surgery on his stomach.  I don't quite understand what it is, he said his stomach is literally turning inside out.  Now I don't see how that is possible, but he's having surgery on his stomach for some problem.   He said he'll call me in the afternoon and doesn't want me to visit him at the hospital.   He hates visitors at the hospital and I hate to go to the hospital so that works fine.

We have a winter weather advisory in effect for tomorrow.  I think we're supposed to get freezing rain and sleet.  I would rather have snow.   Right now it looks like Mom and Dad shouldn't have any problems driving down on Thursday.  If they can't make it, Saturday or Sunday is fine with me.   The funny thing is both my brother and sister were all worried about what I was going to do with a full Thanksgiving dinner if they can't get here.  I guess they didn't realize I only made reservations.

I should say I have made the whole dinner more than once, but with the iffy weather, I'm really glad I wasn't planning on doing that this year.

I saved a little square of the pink carpet that was in good shape because I thought Callie may be upset that it was gone.   She's been sitting on the little square of carpet.  LOL, I'm glad I saved it for her.

There must have been a big spill or water damage of some sort in the past.  There was a huge stain showing on the bottom of that carpet.  Luckily the floors were ok underneath.  Not perfect, but pretty good.   I can post some photos tomorrow.  I took some but don't feel like dealing with it tonight.

Of course I knew Ruta knew my aunt.  Ruta is very close with my cousin Dodo (aunt's daughter) and she and her husband Web were always at the Jew dinners in the days when I was actually invited to them.  I occasionally run into Ruta at various events and she's always sweet as can be.
