Well, you've read the notes, the notes had time on its hands, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - time waits for no cows, too.

I always fall asleep while watching Fantasia.

And, sorry MR BK - I don't like the Gershwin segment.  I guess I expected somehow that the images would tie visually into the music, rather than just images IN TIME to the music.

Good morning, al! I've been dowloading Christmas recordings this morning: The Andrews Sisters, Julie Andrews, Harry Belafonte, and Perry Como. I'm also pondering my gift list and wondering, who is Trader Joe's and why did I get this flyer?

Yesterday was a good day, what with all the running about, and some air was cleared about a few projects and my concerns, which was all for the best. It put me into a much better mood and that's good for everyone's health.

Today is another edit day at Toyland, and I'm looking forward to it. On the way I have a post office stop.

I also have a bit of work on an orchestration for "Being Alive" for Liz Callaway and, when I'm back from Toyand, I need to drag out the Jerome Moross score I have to see what's next on the schedule.

TOD:
DVD: the three Netflix items from October sit here and I have no idea what they may be at this point! I've also got the LA Opera video of the wonderful Braunfels opera DIE VOGEL, and a coule of others
CD: my friend Joe Cassidy's Christmas album, Julie Andrews, Harry Belafonte, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway
   VCR: Oy!

Re FANTASIA: I think the "Dance of the Hours" is very funny, but for the most part it's a curious bit of mathematics; Classical music + Classic Disney = Classic Kitsch, and I'm also not crazy about it, although I much prefer it to FANTASIA 2000, which I think visually lacks the beauty of the first and I still don't undestand those damned flying whales! Or, for that matter, Bruce Coughlin's awful, inflated orchestration of a wonderful original chamber piece by Saint-Saens.

Add me to the list of non-"Fantasia" fans. When I was a kid and they would trot out the Disney classics every few years to play on the big screen, that movie was used as a supposed introduction for many to the world of classical music. In my mind, it turned off many a kid to the beauties of the music.

From the standpoint of entertainment, I think that Disney was more successful with his MELODY TIME and MAKE MINE MUSIC

PETER AND THE WOLF and some of those other short films within the features are minor Disney classics.

I recall that, after seeing WILLIE, THE OPERA SINGING WHALE (I forget which film it was in), I was in tears for days because Willie was killed.

I don't mind FANTASIA.  In fact, I do like watching most of it as long as it's in bite-sized segments.  Like DR JRand, I fall asleep when I watch it as a whole.  As far as FANTASIA 2000 is concerned, I only care for the Donald Duck segment.

I'm pretty sure that both films were among the first DVDs that I ever owned.

I wonder if it's the "sonics" of the FANTASIA score (as played by The Philadelphia Orchestra) that make it so sleep-inducing?

Yesterday I finally watched my Netflix Blu Ray selection, CRASH, which has been sitting for about 6 weeks.  While there are apparently many films with this title, this one features Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Sandra Bullock and many more.  To say that this is a dark film is the ultimate understatement.  What a "downer!"  I don't know why I selected it in the first place.  I don't know why I even finished watching it in the second place.

It apparently won a few Oscars.  I suppose that it's intent was to deliver a message, but when I watch a film, I want to be entertained and not be the recipient of a "sermon."

The lesson learned is that maybe I should consider changing my Netflix plan to network streaming, which my new Sony Blu Ray player will do.  The downside is that it will decrease the number of selections available, but the upside is that I can immediately watch another.  My option now is to slip the disk into its envelope, mail it back to Netflix and wait for my next selection to be sent - usually a two day deal.  Oh yeah - and speak out about COMCAST trying to screw with Netflix streaming via COMCAST internet services!  >:(

I bought my son a Netflix subscription for Christmas last year. He says he has had the same disc for several months -- but he uses the live streaming thing all the time.

Or something like that. I have no idea what any of it means.

I also watched a lot of METROPOLIS yesterday, and am currently watching the documentary about its restoration on the BD.

I must admit, I love the Bacharach-David LOST HORIZON, so sue me.  And I don't think that's actually Liv singing, IIRC, though I still remember the LIFE magazine article when the film was being shot raving about her singing and dancing "skills."  :)

There is a cheaper plan you can go on now if you just use the live streaming.  It's $7.99 a month.  If he never used the discs, it may be a way to save a little money

Well...

A) Some people never talk to their pianist anyway, so... ::)
B) I try not to be "heard" too much in the room as it is. So, I communicate via a finely tuned series of pointing and head nods.
C) Ideally, if the singer is fully prepared, and has properly prepared their sheet music, all I really ever need to do is take a good glance at the first couple of measure, the last couple of measures, and... Go!

Count me in as another non-fan of it too.  I remember watching "The Sorceror's Apprentice" segment in grade school each Halloween, but the first time I saw the whole movie... Well... I'm pretty sure I took a couple of naps.

And then when the DVD came out... Well... I can take it in segments, but not as a whole.

A few comments on some of the discussion threads here:

* I love a lot of Fantasia, although what they did to Rite of Spring is simply horrible. The Gershwin sequence in Fantasia 2000 is great, and the visual gag with the rabbits in Pomp and Circumstance had me in stitches when I first saw it.

* Crash has some beautiful cinematography, but its entire premise was succintly and more entertainingly summed up in a single song from Avenue Q ("Everyone's a Little Bit Racist," but you of course knew that already).

I wonder if the lack of focus in "The Last Airbender" BD has to do with the fact that it was presented in 3-D. -Maybe they just ported that print over to the BD... without the glasses. ::)

We are home between our trip to Hamilton and our Friday evening activities here in Middletown.  The lecture we attended was a Miami history professor talking about the British monarchy and he was quite interesting.  Afterwards we went to the new location of Half Price Books and to lunch at Culver's, where I was very good and only ate a lean roast beef sandwich.  I'd have loved a caramel cashew sundae, but tonight's Amahl is a "dessert theater" so I'll wait and find something good there.

Our load in for the first day of volunteering has finished. We had a great group of people. They fed us lunch (pasta salad, green salad and sandwiches, sodas and cookies). We were done early so I decided to do the laundry so I can sleep in (ha, ha, ha) tomorrow. Perhaps I'll sleep until 6am but at least I won't have to get dressed and go down three flights of stairs to the laundromat. I can stay inside and wait for the radiator repair man to come at 9:30am. I will have eaten my oatmeal and drunk my coffee by then. After the radiator repair man leaves I will make a meat loaf for dinner.

Sunday I plan on doing nothing. Anthony will be going out around 1:30 for a friend's fundraising event but I won't be going with him.

I have to go back to the laundromat in a half hour to pick up the dry laundry. I will decide there whether I will fold it or just stuff it back in the bag and bring it to the apartment and fold it here. I'm pretty tired now and standing for another 15 minutes at a pink plastic table with hot laundry isn't high on my list of fun things to do right now.

Could it be your landlord doing some final cleaning up and checking to see how much of The Oaf's security deposit to give back?

Back from some errands and whatnot - and dealing with a Bukowsical problem - somehow the mastering guy's computer decided to have a mind of its own and flip two tracks on the master.  His order is correct in the computer, it's what I approved, but somehow in creating the actual master, it flipped two tracks - funnily on the PQ log the numbers are CORRECT - it just flipped the tracks, so you go from track four to track six to track five to track seven - again, numbers are correct, it just put them in the wrong order - it's the first time in mastering over 500 discs that this has ever happened.  And no one can explain it.

We were going to just let it be, but I had him create a new master, which they'll get Monday morning.  We're actually getting the CDs on Monday but I'll hold off shipping until Thursday (and then ship it and Carrie both) - and I'll have the plant replicate 300 discs-only of the fixed version, and we'll just include the fixed CD in with each order along with a little note.  And I think the mastering guy will adjust his bill accordingly so that it doesn't cost us anything.  Then, after we've sold past 300, we'll just replicate the fixed discs as we need them.

Remember I told you earlier about the guy making with all the gay comments in the Lost Horizon thread.  Well, having written five mysteries, I've gotten pretty good at detective work.  Someone in the Lost Horizon thread had posted a link to a video of Sally Kellerman's lost reprise of Living Together.  I followed the link and the channel name was the same as the person who'd been banned from the board for making the comments.  Then I noticed a post in the thread from a new name - I clicked on it - registered today.  I went back to youtube and sure enough the names matched up, so we now know who this fellow is.  And for someone making with the gay comments, he sure does leave a lot of nice comments on videos of young male bodybuilders :)

I found his website, too.  His father was an NFL coach and - they did not get along.  Gee, I wonder why?  He starred as Oliver in an early 1970s tour with Vincent Price playing Fagin.  Now he paints and is a fan of Lost Horizon the musical.  They're going to let him stay on the board (they know it's the same person, same IP) and just monitor him.  If he makes one offensive comment to anyone, it's Goodbye Again.  Knowledge is a fun thing.

Hated that movie. Hated it, hated it.

I hated it too

A must watched video of a penguin in Japan who walks into town everyday.

Did anyone watch this?  I emailed it to Craig who emailed me back, "that's pretty awesome."  If I can get praise from him I'm sure a few of you would enjoy this. ;)

I just watched it.  That is pretty cool!

Even the back pack is cute.

OK...

So...

Apparently there's this Norwegian television program called, "Gylne Tider" ("Golden Times"). From what I can gather, they feature TV and Pop Music stars and near-stars from years past.

Here's a PROMO (http://).

And here's a version of "Let It Be" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8cNHCP3juQ).

And "We Are The World" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQOeDYDOCKc). *There are a bunch of "Dynasty" alumni in this one.

It's kind of like a very trippy trip down Pop Culture memory lane.

I could never bring up the Promo, but I loved the other two videos.  An interesting collection of pop celebrities, and others who have already watched their 15 minutes of fame pass them by.

And is it just me, or does Bruce Boxleitner look like he is auditioning to play Bill Clinton?

Found an oddity in the clearance cookbook section tonight: "The Musical Theatre Cookbook." There are recipes for every show from "Of Thee I Sing" to "City of Angels," with  some meat pies from "Sweeney" thrown in. I may never make anything from it, but it was only $2.

I didn't much care for it when it first came out, but I've grown to like THE POLAR EXPRESS movie.  Though why I am watching this commercial-plagued showing of it on ABC Family, I have no idea.  And it reminds me that I have yet to watch the Zemeckis A CHRISTMAS CAROL DVD...

That is the problem with rumors - they often come true.  A friend of mine who works near Olympia (our state capitol) just sent me an e-mail to let me know that the pay cut is already a done-deal.

Yesterday, I said that I'd have a report on our opening night, but some of us went out after the show and I didn't get home until about 1:30 a.m.  I didn't even turn on my computer...I just went to bed.

So, last night's opening night of "Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol" was a success!  There were still a couple of light issues (I only comment on them because I'm involved with the lights), but they were minor and we fixed them after the show.  The actors were all quite good...no one forgot any lines (although a couple weren't exactly as written ;)) and the audience really responded positively to the show.  I think that it's a great show and it'll do quite well in the rest of the run.

"Amahl" was quite well-done - no weak voices, excellent dual pianists (one of them was the church organist who played for our wedding 30 years ago), decent costumes and set.  They had a few mic problems, but that seemed to be the only thing not up to par.  The dessert theater concept was festive - assorted desserts and beverages served beforehand.  There was also a Christmas carol sing-along beforehand, led by the director, a retired vocal music teacher who's a real Pied Piper, especially with kids (Nina, DR Elmore).

Good Evening!

Well... I saw a play earlier this evening.  There were some wonderful performances, and some great word play. However, I have absolutely idea what happened in it. -Well, more accurately, after the final two scenes of the play, I had to question everything that came before it.

Strangely enough, I still liked it, even though I left the theatre a bit perplexed.

Somehow - and I'm a bit afraid to admit this here, but... - I actually don't think I've ever seen a production of Amahl and the Night Visitors.  I've seen the TV movie with Stratas, but not a staged on stage version.
