Well, you've read the notes, you're now feeling a little akimbo, and now it is time for you to post until the akimbo cows come home.

I got my MAD MEN dvd's yesterday.

MR BK - last Sunday when I ordered them.....the regular DVD's were $9.99 for the first two season and $12.99 for the third season, but the Blu Ray discs were $12.99 and $13.99 and would not ship for three to five weeks.....what day did you order the Blu Ray discs for $9.99?

Good morning, all! I went to bed around 10:30 and slept solidly until around 4 am. Then, I was wide awake for what seemed eternity. I finally passed out but I was to tired to get up when the alarm went off at 7:30. I slept until 8:30 and figured the time was nigh.

I have Act One edits on LADY OF THE SLIPPER at Toyland but I must first stop at the post office to mail the music for the January 5 recording session to baritone Jonathan Michie, currently with the Miami Fla Opera, who will replace Steven LaBrie in the session. Steven has scheduling problems, as you may recall, and he asked to be replaced.

I think tonight I will try to catch up on those Netflix discs sitting here and ponder my Christmas lists.

BK, back when Julieanne was President of the Hollywood branch of the LA  library, I used to go around and pick up books that people were donating to the library for book sales.  So I always got to have first pick of stuff, and I scored a huge cache of THEATRE ARTS magazine, over a hundred volumes from 1948 to about 1964.  They are, of course, great from an historical point of view; but also had a complete play in each issue...and big, important plays.

DR Charles Pogue - as a reference librarian, I was always pleased when I could find a play in Theatre Arts that couldn't be found anywhere else.  Unfortunately, the trend now is to get rid such things and most new reference librarians are pretty dependent on Google.

My parents are currently venturing to a part of Richmond that they've never really ventured before.  Of course, the Annual Christmas Parade is this morning, and there's a basketball game at VCU too. JR, the MAD MEN Blu's were indeed on sale for $9.99 for a day last week.  Blu-ray.com had a big "featured" special on the home page.  For any of you who buy a lot of hi-def, I can't recommend our site highly enough--just check in a couple of times a day and there is tons of information on the home page about deals, some of which are time sensitive.

BK, ROSENCRANZ and GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD is a faithful filming of the Stoppard play and has some very good stuff in it.

To tie these two posts together, one of my favorite new titles showing in one of my colleague's review queues at Blu-ray.com is ROSENCRANZ and GUILDENSTERN ARE UNDEAD.  I believe it may be a zombie movie.  ;)

Ginny, I am amazed at what libraries discard these days.  I thought they were supposed to be our repositories for our literature and history.

So did my generation of librarians, DR Charles Pogue.  I'm not a "paper only" traditionalist - a lot of technology is really nifty - but there's so much being lost because its value is not recognized.
I'm reading a book called "The Shallows" in which the author argues that for the past 550 years, the printed word was at the center of society. Things are in the process of shifting, and rapidly, to the Internet.

I'd still rather curl up with a book than a laptop.

My sister got me a magnet of this. :D

Then I had to open a paypal claim for some jerk eBay seller - I'd made a little purchase - I was worried the item would sell so I asked the seller if he'd just sell it for his opening price and he shut the auction down and did - sent me a money request via paypal and that was that.  I had a question about the item and I also wanted to know when it was shipping.  I got no response to my first e-mail, sent through eBay.  He did respond to my second e-mail sent through eBay saying he hadn't gotten the first one, that it had gone into a spam folder and been automatically deleted from his iPad for space reasons.  Um, I don't think so - why would anyone need to delete any spam automatically for space reasons???  It makes no sense, especially as the jerk has a gmail account.  He asked what my questions were - this time I wrote him back via eBay AND his direct gmail account.  No response.  I have written him six times now to no response.  I used a people search and got several addresses on him and two phone numbers - one is disconnected and the other rings incessantly.  So, I opened the dispute - what that does is automatically put a hold on the funds I sent him until we resolve - that means if he already withdrew the funds they will place a hold by using his secondary source of funds, i.e. his bank account or cc.  Hopefully, that will finally get a response out of this putz and I will not resolve until the item is in my hands and he's answered the question I asked about it.  And that's why I like paypal.

We had a very busy day in Chelsea!

As I mentioned earlier the repairman was scheduled to come and make some adjustments to our very, very, very old radiators.

They arrived on time but the building handyman had not yet arrived from New Jersey so they were delayed by a half hour. Then the fun began. It took from about 10:15 until almost 4:30 to replace the valves on both of our radiators. Did I mention that they are very, very, very old.

We have, basically, a two room apartment w/a small galley kitchen and a bathroom. There is a radiator in both rooms. Since they were both being worked on we couldn't escape to the other room and we really couldn't leave. Problems included the new valves did not fit the dimensions of the very, very, very old radiators so the legs on the very, very, very old radiators had to be sawed down. They finished the radiators, turned the heat in the building back on and then took their lunch break. At this point we went out to get some food as well. When we came back the heat was coming back through the building and the handyman and the radiator repairmen needed to check that the seals were good and that the radiators were not still leaking (that was why they needed work, they were leaking into our downstairs neighbors ceilings). Bad news, both of them were leaking. That's when they decided to saw the legs down. That took a good 45 mintues to an hour and then they had to reconnect the radiators. Once that was done the heat was turned back on and finally, success, no leaks in our radiators. Now we seem to have some control over the heat as well. We never turned our radiators on because, as those of you who have been to our apartment in the winter know, this place can get so hot we have to open windows. Now that the valves have been replaced, if the heat is turned off we won't get residual heat. Hooray! We won't have to spend the winter with the windows open a crack or more.

One of the good things about the day is that a portion of our bedroom floor that was in bad shape was replaced as part of the radiator repair. It had been in bad shape for a few years but it wasn't dangerous and we didn't really walk much near the radiator so there was no pressing need to replace the floor boards but the handyman said the building owner decided we needed to fix the floor before the radiators could be put back in place because the wood was weak. It's fine with us. We now have nice floorboards and a strong floor again.

After the workmen left we spent another two hours putting everything back in order. Of course, it will soon be put back asunder because we will be putting up the Christmas tree tomorrow and Monday.

It's been a long day and I'm glad it's over!

And now for some exciting news for this former actor.

I have a friend who teaches playwrighting at NYU. We went to school together at U of Minnesota some 35 years ago. He's a director now (he was an actor) and he does a great job of teaching playwrighting to new students. Even though I'm not active in the business anymore he still considers me an actor and has used me in his semester finals for a few years now. He has professional actors come in and read his students' plays so they can hear how the finished work sounds. Whenever a play calls for an older (if you're 19-22 then 57 is old) gentleman he will try to use me. I read a play for one of his students last week and it went very well. I just got an e-mail from him asking if I was free this Tuesday to read again and I'll be reading with Kathleen Chalfant! For those of you who don't know, she's an amazing actor, having starred in Wit Off-Broadway, in the original production of Angels in America and many other things on and off Broadway and in regional theatres around the country. I'm very excited!

Well, thanks to all of the HHW vibes, I am feeling a lot better than I was.
I think having Miss Molly around helped, too.  She napped with me on the bed early in the afternoon.  She has tried to crawl into the whirlpool tub with me twice.  She truly enjoys the watching the whirlpool.  And she has now officially mastered the OUT and the IN of her dog-door.
It's beginning to look like she's truly found her way about.
She has a couple of habits which we will have to nip in the bud - she hugs people when they come in the door, feet on their shoulders. . .so, we're trying to teach her the word, "Down," when she got down earlier today from my cousin's shoulders and when I told her to "Sit," I gave her her a treat.
I just took two pictures of her on the couch, they will be posted following their photoshopping.

Thanks for all of the health vibes!

I think the hug is so darn cute.  You might want to teach her the word "hug".  After she gets the idea of doing it on command it should be easier to tell her "off" or "wait", instead of "down" as in going all the way to the floor.

How long ago was this Laura?  I don't know any trainers who say to do this anymore and personally I agree.

Even the method I used to teach Echo not to jump is deemed undesirable by many trainers.  I know she was exceptionally smart & can't judge the effectiveness this method by her.  She learned not to jump with one short training session.  Sherlock never really jumped for long so it wasn't an issue with him but I recall this wasn't what the trainers in Sherlock's classes did.  For Echo one person got her excited so she would jump while another person had the leash behind her to yank her back down.

I also taught her "up" on command which she enjoyed.  She also liked to "dance" in my arms. :)

Title: Re: NOTES AKIMBO

Laura one reason trainers stop using that method is a combination of the difficulty of always catching the dog with your knee, plus the possibility of falling while attempting to catch the dog with your knee.   Growing up I found it easy to do with our toy/miniature poodles.  Larger dogs weren't always so easy.  Come to think of it I don't remember every curing the poodles of jumping, but then they were small enough to catch in our arms when they jumped.

Good Evening!

...And I'm back from Carnegie Hall...

Tonight's program was presented by The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. They opened with Samuel Barber's "Capricorn Concerto", followed by Benjamin Britten's "Les Illuminations" featuring soprano, Kate Royal.  The second half was the Symphony No. 7 of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Overall, it was quite a good concert. I think the only other times I've heard the Britten live were with piano accompaniment.  Kate Royal, was, well, luminous - although, I did have some quibbles with her French diction. The Barber is such a cool piece, and it was fascinating watching the conductor-less Orpheus Chamber Orchestra work it's way through some of the freer passages.

And earlier, I popped up to the Bronx for a concert by Jose Feliciano at Lehman College. He can still pick and strum like nobody's business, and it was nice to hear a mix of some of his classic hits, some fun covers, and a few new songs. -I really liked his versions of "Billie Jean" and John Lennon's "A Jealous Man".

And, yes, his encore was "Feliz Navidad". :)

Tonight is our Annual Holiday Party.  Everything is ready to go.  I'm just finishing the party favor which like in years past, is a homegrown CD of Holiday music.  The food is ready, the punch is made, the lights are on.  The guests shall arrive starting at 6:00pm  If I remember to take pictures, I'll post some.

DR Matthew - I hope you and your guests are having/had a splendid and festive time.

Back from a nice supper at the Daily Grill - I had the Tuscan chicken breast - it's really a double breast, which really isn't all that much food, but I could only finish half before I thought I was going to explode - of course, I had a chopped salad before, so maybe that did me in.

Congrats on the new radiators, Ben!  And great news about the reading!

At tonight's show, a couple walked out during the middle of the first act!  We found out at intermission that the husband got violently ill and HAD to get out of there before...well, you know! :o
