Well, you've read the notes, the notes were full-sized, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they ARE coming, it's in the small print.

TOD: The New Yorker. I used to read it for the cartoons and the fillers at the end of the stories (Block That Metaphor! was my favorite).

I started reading the articles when I got older.

Then I just sort of stopped reading magazines altogether. I guess it's the internet.

And for someone who wrote for newspapers for 25 years, I gave those up very quickly, too. But I think it was easier to do that because the quality had fallen as badly as BK describes in his notes.

Just got caught up with yesterday's posts. Like Dan (the Man), I went off and made cookies yesterday. It's fun making cookies with a friend when all you want to do is have fun. It's not so fun when you want to make cookies. I was testing a recipe from Mom's cookbook, and my friend didn't like that we had to follow the recipe. Then she wanted to make her version of what she would have done with the recipe and her cookies didn't come out right, but she was happy with her version and I with mine, and that's all that matters. Hopefully later this week, I'll have time to devote to more cookie baking.

Good morning, all! I will hopefully have the day I didn't have yesterday because of that soggy pillow. Around 10:30 I will head downtown for edits at Toyland with my colleagues Curtis and Skip Kennon. I should get home in the late afternoon and hopefully pick up one or two checks in the mail.

Following that, I've got more typing of Victor Herbert lyrics; these German songs and an English version take forever, and I've got to look at a few Appalachian and British folksongs for this theatre piece in the works.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to DR Nursie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TOD:
Does anyone still publish "The Weekly Reader"? I loved it in grade school and it might make a thoughtful gift for DR MBarnum, if some of the words aren't too difficult. I also loved the Micky Mouse Club Magazine. And Famous Monsters of Filmdom.

In junior high school I discovered "New Yorker," which encouraged my move away from Ohio.

In high school I became addicted to "Theatre Arts," "Opera News," "High Fidelity" and "Stereo Review," all of which I followed faithfully for years. "High Fidelity" and "Stereo Review" may still be published but their quality decreased along with the musical tastes of the American public, and I don't think I've looked at an issue in over 10 years.

In college I discovered "Dance Magazine" and British magazines "Gramophone" (still subscribe) and "Opera" and "After Dark," to which I subscribed until its demise around 1982 or so.

In the 1970s, I added "New York Magazine" to my reasons to leave Ohio.

When I got to NYC, I loved "Theatre Week" and Max Preeo's "Show Music," neither of which lasted. I also found "American Record Guide" and "Fanfare," to which I've subscribed for over 15 years.

Tuesday morning greetings!  Today is my last day as a board member of the grantwriters' group.  We're having our chapter meeting (a luncheon) and then a board meeting.  A week from Thursday, the continuing board members are having a dinner for me and the other person leaving the board.  This is the group I was with on the fateful Aug. 3, so they're pretty special to me.

Rob will be riding along with me, because he has an appointment at Sinclair Community College and we're sharing my car.  It's right on my way, so I'll drop him off.  I'll be glad to have the company.

TOD - Talk of THE WEEKLY READER, which I loved when I was a kid, reminded me that Richard and I now subscribe to THE WEEK, which is kind of like a grown-up version of TWR.  We also get TIME and NEWSWEEK, but I often don't have the patience for some of their long, detailed articles.
Title: Re: SMALL PRINT

BK, I know the collapsing of the neswpapers, both in size and quality, is tough, but people just aren't buying them or magazines much anymore and they are all fighting for survival.  Though our local paper is pretty much crap, I still subscribe because I like to hold a physical paper at the breakfast table.  The saddest part, of course, is that newspapers are no longer strong independent voices for news and people rely on the 24-hour faux news stations in cableland.  Clowns like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck have replaced the Walter Cronkites and Edward R. Murrows of the news world.

TOD:  In my house, we subscribed to LIFE, LOOK, and THE SATURDAY EVENING POST and I looked at them every week.  As Elmore mentioned, we had the WEEKLY READER in school.  My dad bought PLAYBOY and it was on the coffee table for all to peruse -- he saw nothing dirty in the nude female form.   I later subscribed to it from the 1980's for about 20 years, finally stopping when it started reviewing video games and the playmates could be my daughter.  Since high school, I used to buy TV GUIDE every week and marked the movies I wanted to watch.  When it changed format and got so unwieldy with all the cable channels, I just stopped.

As a teenager, I was heavily into Edgar Rice Burroughs and subscribed to several fanzines.  My grandfather gave me a gift subscription to CIVIL WAR ILLUSTRATED.  For awhile my dad had subs to shortlived magazines like SHOW BUSINESS ILLUSTRATED & SHOW and I still have several copies.  I used to read any Theatre magazines and FILMS IN REVIEW in the library.  I used to buy AFTER DARK on the newstand until it finally just got so blatantly gay, it wasn't worth it for the theatre articles.  I used to subscribe to PLAYS INTERNATIONAL, a British Theatre magazine, and pick up another, PLAYS & PLAYERS whenever I saw it on the newstand.  I also used to subscribe to BIBLIO, a magazine about book collecting, now defunct, I believe.   My mother has long given me a Birthday subscription to CINCINNATI MAGAZINE.  Since she passed away this year, I guess I'll have to renew it myself.  In high school, our history teacher made us subscrbe to either NEWSWEEK or TIME.  I choose TIME.  For awhile there was a revival of LIBERTY MAGAZINE (both new and old articles) and I used to buy that.  And I used to buy the late Richard Valley's SCARLET STREET.  Belonging to AFI, I used to get the now-defunct AMERICAN FILM.   One of my joys when I lived on Yucca in LA was walking my dog, Hotspur, down to the newstand on Cahuenga between Hollywood and Sunset Blvds. several times a week.

The magazines for which I currently have subscriptions are CINCINNATI MAGAZINE, MYSTERY SCENE MAGAZINE, THE DRAMATIST (as a member of Dramatist Guild), AMERICAN THEATRE (as a member of American Theatre), WRITTEN BY (as a member of the WGA),  SOUTHERN THEATRE (as a member of Southeastern Theatre Conference), THE WEEK, and THE BURROUGHS BULLETIN (as a member of The Burroughs Bibliophiles).

I have several boxes of old magazines on theatre, books, film, and history as well as several I've saved for various articles or memorabilia (Kennedy assasination, etc.)

bk - Many newspapers have "downsized" to "tabloid size" over the past couple of years.  Usually the change in format is done for economic and "green" factors.  Alas, if the quality of the content goes down too, well, that's a totally different matter.

Title: Re: SMALL PRINT

I think my first memory of actually plunking down money for a magazine was MAD.  Then I did Famous Monsters of Filmland pretty regularly and all the MAD ripoffs like Help, Sick, Panic, etc, as well as those magazines in the mid-1950s that printed lyrics to songs.

In the 1960s I didn't do much with magazines, I think, save for Theatre Arts - I didn't buy it regularly but I did get the occasional issue and loved it.  I, too, bought Show Business Illustrated and Show when I'd see them at the newsstand.

My regular magazine buying habit began around 1969.  Like Pogue, TV Guide every week, circling the movies I needed to watch.  I subscribed to both Time and Newsweek for a while.  I also did the New Yorker and New York for a while.  I did Gourmet for a year, I think.  Then came the cinema magazines - I became obsessive about doing complete runs, and I had Films and Filming, Films in Review, Sight and Sound, all pretty much complete, plus some oddball publications like The Velvet Light Trap and several other short-lived film mags.  I still have lots of those.  In the 1980s the quality of everything declined and I stopped buying and subscribing.  I held out with TV Guide until the cable came and then I couldn't make sense of it anymore.

I did read Show Music and Theatre World (then In Theatre) regularly because they frequently reviewed my albums.

Good afternoon, all! Happy birthday, DR Jane!

TOD:
I used to read "Reader's Digest" regularly at my grandparents' home, and the occasional "Mad" from whichever friend had a copy. We had a "Highlights" subscription when I was a kid, and I periodically leafed through my father's "Smithsonian."

I subscribed to the Sondheim Review for a while, but let that lapse for some reason. Ditto with my "Games" subscription (although I sometimes pick up a copy at the newsstand: we need more cryptic crossword writers on this side of the pond). Currently, I only get the New York Times magazine, which, while shrunk, does still have pretty decent articles (and a fun rotation of food series).

BK:  I'm going to say this here rather than at FilmScoreMonthlyMessageboard:

I was really saddened by what I read in that "Lost Horizon" thread (the earlier pages).  Cliff is "out there" at the best of times and a bit of a manic depressive when times aren't great for him.  I wasn't prepared for the ugliness of his rants.  I don't think he's really attuned to discourse on the internet.  It's easy enough to call him on stuff he says when talking live but he lacks finesse when he's disagreed with.

Sorry if you felt I was siding with him despite the earlier posts.  The only reason I entered the thread was because I saw his name as the last person who posted (at the time I saw the thread near the top of the thread list).

Much of what he said, of the personal nature, is really not something I expected from him OF ALL PEOPLE.  He was actually describing himself, except substituting the word "soundtrack" for whatever it is he's into these days.  There's quite a bit of self-loathing that comes out in his written rants/rages.  I'm sorry anyone had to see that.

And...given all that I read later last night...I'm not at all sorry he won't be sharing his thoughts with us on film and film music.

Topic of the Day:  I used to subscribe to TV Guide, but gave up on the print version when they changed the size and on-line version was much better, anyway.  Also, for several years, I used to subscribe to the monthly Playbill magazine.  Again, I stopped when I was getting more information from the on-line website.  I started getting Show Music probably four or five years before it ended and I'm a charter subscriber to The Sondheim Review.  Those are all the magazines that I've ever gotten.

RLP, yes his posts sounded to me like he was a person filled with self-loathing.  Maybe you could talk to him - I'm sure he's a nice person - or maybe he's just gone off the deep end.  I found his "conversation" with John Landis rather disquieting, actually - if I were Landis and I was talking to someone that weird I would have gotten away quickly.

Jennifer the weight of my layers varies on the temps.  Lighter layers are easier to move in than one bulky coat, plus I often warm up as I walk & need to layer off, meaning the layer needs to tie around my wait.  I do have warmer coats for my nicer clothes when I'm not exercising.

Sometimes I take off an inside layer & put the outer layer back on.

Send some of those good cookies my way ;)

TOD:

I guess my early magazines were Highlights and Jack & Jill.  There were also the school-offered Weekly Reader and Read magazine.  I would also page through my parents' magazines, Life, Time, Popular Mechanics, Family Circle and Woman's Day.

I didn't really begin to read TV Guide until I was about 13.  My teen-age mags were Famous Monsters, Eerie, Creepy and Vampirella.  Also began reading Rolling Stone, National Lampoon, Time, Newsweek and New York Magazine.  When I was about 15 or 16, I found that I could get away with buying Playboy at my Nook of Knowledge book store and at my local 7-11.

I've subscribed to all the theatre magazines:  ShowMusic, Playbill, In Theatre, TheaterWeek, American Theatre and some backstage technical journal whose name escapes me at the mo'.

Nowadays, I still enjoy reading magazines.  Mens' Health, Mens Journal, Esquire, Entertainment Weekly and an occasional Rolling Stone, New Yorker, Time and New York Magazine.

A few weeks ago, I saw that someone was publishing a new version of Famous Monsters of Filmland.  It was rather pricey and pretty much looked like the magazine as it was when I stopped reading it--as a catalogue for horror/sci-fi merchandise.

I've subscribed to lots of magazines over the years.  I remember when I was about 12 I saw an order card for Life-I think it was for 10 cents an issue.

Now I get Entertainment Weekly, Time, Smart Money, TV Guide, Consumer Reports, Time Out New York & National Geographic Traveler.   I barely have time to read them all.

T.O.D.

As a kid I loved:
TV GUIDE
MAD MAGAZINE
THE WEEKLY READER

As a young man:
TV GUIDE
AFTER DARK
PLAYBOY

Now days:
TV GUIDE
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
INSTINCT

I would always read THE NEW YORKER and READER'S DIGEST (cover to cover) when I saw either one at someone else's or at the doctor's office.  However, every time I would subscribe to either one of them, they would end up tossed into a drawer or or on a coffee table unread.

Back from a long afternoon in Dayton.  Rob dropped me off at my meeting venue and took the car for his errands around Dayton.  I got a ride to my former workplace from the young woman who now has the job from which I retired and jumped from her car to Rob's (well mine, actually).  We stopped at one of the library's southern branches to pick up some items I had on hold, then we picked up Chinese food to bring home for dinner.

I no longer have to attend grantwriter board meetings - they gave me and the other retiring board member lovely gifts of amaryllis bulbs.

Back from a kookie day.  Had a lot of drama in the first few hours - the helper didn't show up, no phone calls, no nothing.  I left her several messages, but was very concerned since that is not like her at all.  I finally had to mosey on over to the West of Wood for lunch with dear reader Jeanne.  I got an e-mail when I checked on my phone and it turns out the helper had misplaced her phone and doesn't know my number by heart (that's one of the biggest drawbacks of today's technology - no one learns phone number anymore - I mean, why bother right?  Wrong - THIS is why you bother).  She was fine and finally found her phone later in the day, but I told her this could never happen again and that she must carry my number with her or learn it.

Lunch was fun - the food was quite nice and we had a nice chat about this and that and also that and this.  It took me a while to get with it, because of the worry about the helper.  Then I had to mosey on over to the other Wood - of Holly, to work with Boswell on the opening number and an Annie Get Your Gun medley for Linda and Greg.  We got an opening number put together, which I hope they'll like - it's fun, funny, and very up and mischievous.  We chose the Annie songs and now have to get the music.

The traffic on every single street I was on was horrendous - at THREE-THIRTY.  I couldn't even take the freeway home it was so ridiculous - had to take a very circuitous route and what should have been a ten-minute drive was thirty.  Also a little irksome - not one package.

*I ended up going to the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS "Gypsy of the Year" Competition earlier today. It was truly wonderful. And touching. -And, yes, I even cried a few times.

The opening number was a tribute to Carol Channing, and ended up featuring her too. She performed "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend", and "Hello, Dolly". -And she was accompanied by some of the actors who who danced around her during the last tour of Hello, Dolly!.  Lee Roy Reams even introduced her who played Cornelius opposite her a number of times.

-And, as and added bonus, I ended up sitting next to Harvey Evans. :)

Hey, I'm a big Harvey Evans fan. That excuses bad grammar in my book.

"Did you just drop an umbrella? I keep hearing umbrellas falling."

This sounds like something Kerry would say.

It was Paul.  It hasn't rained here in weeks.

And then I stopped by The Palace Theater to say Hi to my favorite door-person/usher in the world, Melida - also know as "Pecas". She's a true "Mother To Everyone", and I always love catching up with her. -Plus, she's quite in the know about what shows and actors are in trouble. ;) -She already had some good "info" about The Palace's next tenant. :-X

We had actually dropped by a little before tonight's curtain of West Side Story, and since Brendan hadn't seen this production yet, I asked the House Manager if he would walk us in for the show. And he did. :)

Oh, and, yes... It's still cold in New York City. Very, very cold. Like North Pole cold. (Just imagine Eugene Morris Jerome making that statement.) ;)

Watching a German movie called "The White Ribbon" about some scary, scary kids. Very long, but really good.

You watched NANNY McPHEE RETURNS, too?   ;D

Well...

I'm feeling a bit "distracted" right now, and since I have a meeting in the morning, I think I'm going to shut down the computer and read for a little bit before getting some sleep.

Goodnight.

Sounds a lot like NANNY McPHEE RETURNS.  Except the "really good" part.  ;)

Well, I hope not. Basically these were the German children of WWI who you could easily see grow into the Nazis of WWII.

Clowns like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck have replaced the Walter Cronkites and Edward R. Murrows of the news world.

No they haven't. Neither Limbaugh or Beck pretend to be impartial news reporters, and their shows aren't news shows, per se, anyway.
