Well, you've read the notes, the notes jingled and had bells on, and now it is time for you to post until the jingling cows come home.

Friday morning greetings!  I'm up early for a 9:30 appointment to pick up the new glasses I ordered last week before Richard and I head to Oxford, OH, for him to sing with the Men's Glee Club at winter commencement.  From there, we're going on to Cincinnati for an event that I cannot tell you about until it's over, but we'll do some Christmas shopping along the way.

I am, once again, nestled in the bosom of South Carolina and all things Palmetto State/South Carolinian/southern everything.

My flight was uneventful.  I was unable to sleep more than an hour in transit.  I was unsettled.  Out of sorts.  Ill at ease.  Once at my mom's house, I had a nice lunch of stew with corn bread...and then a four-hour nap.  Wednesday e'en, I went with my mom to Johnston's First Baptist Church to see a repeat performance of the chancel and children's choirs annual Cantata.

I was unprepared for this.  The choir was much larger than I've ever seen it, and this was due to the fact the church has a new choir director who, on Thursday, was graduated from Newberry College with a BA in some music degree.  Many choir members were friends from another nearby church he once attended.  And in the auditorium, at least half the pews were filled.  This was astounding for a Wednesday evening.

The cantata was pretty good.  I only nodded off a couple of times, but I was listening the whole time, I promise.

Yesterday was our trek to the climes of Spartanburg SC to visit my cousin Dot Jolley (87 years young) and share a meal at Wade's family cooking restaurant.  Happily, there was turkey and dressing on the menu this year (last year it was conspicuously missing and I was VERY disappointed).  I had the turkey and dressing w/cranberry sauce and two sides:  A most delicous sweet potato souffle and tasty fried green tomatoes.   Afterward, we visited the cemeter where my grandparents and great grandparents (maternal) are buried and placed flowers on the graves.

On our return, we shopped at Westgate Mall, where I bought a few things at CostCo, and then shopped at Dillards where I procured a couple of pairs of dressy trousers.

Last night, I prepared supper and surprised my mother with her first taste of pasta with pesto sauce.  She was leery...oh, yes!  Leery.  But...she liked it.   And then I teased her with another use we will make of the pesto sauce...as an additive to a turkey sandwich.  Smear some of the sauce on the mayo on one slice of bread...and that sandwich takes on a whole NEW and WONDERFUL dimension.

Today is kick-around Friday.  Nothing planned.  Nothing expected.  Take it as it happens.  We are going to Greenville SC on Monday.  We're having my cousin Debra and her hubby Rob for a spaghetti supper on Tuesday night.

Other than that, I shall endeavor to keep a tight leash on the rapid-fire pace each day seems to be taking.  I'm enjoying my visit...and hope it's not over too fast.

Title: Re: JINGLE BELLS
Post by: elmore3003 on December 17, 2010, 06:00:41 AM
Good morning, all! Today is a day at the offices of Frank Loesser Enterprises, but I had a ton of laundry to do as well, so I was up early. I mst be feeling better today because my body didn't fight my determination to accomplish the laundry early and I was out of bed, bathed, dressed and to the laundromat by 7:30.

I think I've made the turn in my health, although it's hard to be accurate given the crud that seems to be engulfing every space between my lungs and bald spot. If I'm still feeling puny on Monday, I'll call my dctor and see her before Christmas Eve.

So I got back here around 7:50 and my phone rang; it was my brother Randy calling me to apologize for Thanksgiving and to tell me he loved me. All is well, as I predicted it would be. While I was talking to him, my call waiting rang, and it was my beloved sister-in-law Jo checking in! If that's not a kick for good health I don't know what is.

So, tonight, when I get back from the Loesser offices, I will pull out the wrapping paper and get ready for Christmas shipments to parts hither and yon.

Did you see my post last night about using my bread machine to knead the flour into shortbread dough?  Any input on stand mixers?  KitchenAid?  Cuisinart?

Ah, yes, I did.

I'm not sure about using a bread machine for cookie dough. I'd say the best thing to do would be to check your instruction booklet if you still have it. Or check the manufacturer's website for some sort of FAQ.  *I also seem to remember a shortbread recipe that called for melting the butter beforehand to make it much easier to mix, then you let it sit for a couple of hours before rolling and cutting. I'll see if I can track it down later.

As for KitchenAid v. Cuisinart v. ???  -I've always been a KitchenAid person.  However, the competition is so close nowadays, it really all depends on just how "fancy" you want your stand mixer and how much you want to spend on it.  Be sure to KitchenAid's website, they tend to offer special coupons and rebates every now and then.  KitchenAid also sells fully-warrantied refurbished models at considerable savings. You can check Amazon for those or a local outlet.

Sorry I forgot to log out before I went off to see the wizard optician.  I now have new lenses in my everyday glasses, but they are not quite right and I'll get replacements that Debby is having remade by the lab that screwed up.  The problem is that I like the edges rolled AND polished and they just polished these, so they look kind of like Coke bottle bottoms (especially the right one).  This is not the first time the lab has made this mistake...

Anyway, I also have my new giant sunglasses and I ordered new reading glasses that may come in before Christmas.

Yes, both those YouTube clips use our Be A Santa chart without permission - I don't know how the choir got on there unless at some point some choir used it and just sang over Michelle and I, which is, I suspect, the case.  I guess everyone is entitled to just use anything they like these days, without asking.  The counterpoint lyric AND melody is not by Jule Styne and Comden and Green, it's by Lanny Meyers, and the arrangement and harmonies are all Lanny and me.  And the tap dancing, lovingly recreated step for step by the twin girls is, of course, choreographed and performed on the album by Niki Harris.

JMK, just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you give the prospective tenant the address of the rental? I myself wouldn't even consider asking about a rental unless I knew where it was located.

I WILL and HAVE given out the address--AFTER we've spoken and I've determined if they meet our requirements.  A lot of people who have called/inquired are bankrupt, have criminal histories, and the like, and I will NOT release the address willy-nilly.  Also, we made the mistake of releasing the address before pre-screening a few weeks ago and people showed up at the house and tried to get the current tenants to let them in to see it.  NOT appropriate.
Title: Re: JINGLE BELLS
Post by: JMK on December 17, 2010, 10:33:07 AM
Also, one of the reasons this ASS wanted the address was to, in his words, "Verify Lot Size."  Good Lord--yes, I am going to LIE about the lot size.  I mean, come on.
Title: Re: JINGLE BELLS
Post by: JMK on December 17, 2010, 10:34:06 AM
I also tell prospective tenants that the pre-screening is mutual.  We tell them up front about issues like the house having no master bath, etc., to determine if that means they're not interested.
Title: Re: JINGLE BELLS
Post by: JMK on December 17, 2010, 10:35:17 AM
I should also add that the CL ad clearly states the neighborhood, and everyone, including this ASS, has been given nearby landmarks, like Hamilton Park and Bridlemile School, to Google Map and check criminal history, etc.  So it's not like they don't know where they're looking.

I heard from DR Ben while I was at the Loesser office. He is being released today.

As for THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, we have assembled the entire first act vocal score, on Jan 10, 1955 the date that music was released to Don Walker for orchestration. Act One Scene Two, which was the most drastically reshaped in previews, has this sequence:
1. Stading On The Corner
2. Joey Joey
3. The Most Happy Fella
4. Hey Max! (photographer)
5. Tony-Marie Duet (Rosabella)
6. Nobody's Ever Gonna Love you
7. Tony's Trick ("Soon You Gonna leave Me Joe")
8. Rosabella (Reprise)

There are a couple of pages from the November 1955 vocal score where tony has along scene in Italian that is basically, "I can't send my own photo!" but I think that's been removed by Jan 10, 1956. The show opened on Broadway on May 3, 1956 and previews began in March, so they must have just gone into rehearsal on the beginning of January.

There's also a sequence in Act one Scene 3 called "Collar Business" after "Abondanza" where tony has one of the servants adjsut his tie and collar and his sister Marie pushes the servant out of the way and does it for him. She is such a pushy bitch.

I have always enjoyed that counterpoint lyric. Thanks for sharing the history of that.

What a screwy day!  I never got to ship anything, because tomorrow's Linda and Greg rehearsal was, in fact, today - I must have missed the change.  But happily I was here, but Boswell thought it was tomorrow.  But we got a lot of work done on the structure of the show, so it was a good session.  Now I have to wait for singers to arrive.

So, I'm out of the hospital. We got back to the apartment around 4:45-5pm today. I have a two week regimen of antibiotics, a follow-up appointment with the doctor and then in late February or March I will go back to make an appoint to have an appendectomy. My appendix had not burst but it was perforated and not in good shape and the doctor would not remove it at this point. It needs to heal. We need to get rid of the infection and let it shrink back down to normal size and then it will be removed.

I had wonderful care in the hospital and I thank you all for the good wishes. It was so nice to read the past few days and see how many times you all wished me well.

I won't be on for long. Just because I'm home doesn't mean I'm not tired. I will probably go to bed soon after checking my temperature. I need to do that for two weeks as well as take the antibiotics.

Again, thanks for your love and good wishes. I will post again tomorrow.

When his body was exhumed in the 80's, the casket was damaged so he was reburied in a different casket.  Apparently nobody wanted it at the time, so one of the doctors who performed the second autopsy took it and stored it away for thirty years

Must be knew. I'll ask my sister, who lives there, if it's any good.

Funny, there was some barbecue place in Richmond on a TV show, not "Diners ...," and I was going to go there in September when I visited another sister. I asked around and, to a person, all said it was the worst barbecue in town.

"Diners ..." has been in San Antonio a few times and I love all the places they've gone to (I was even asked to recommend a couple of places and they took my advice about the Cove and Texas Pride Barbecue), so I have a tendency to trust their recommendations.

If I remember correctly the Parkette was a long standing (60 years) place that had closed down and was recently re-opened with all the original recipes.  I'm not sure how good the food it but it looked like a fun place.  The history page is long & interesting. http://www.theparkette.com/history.asp

They did another place recently in Houston that looked worth making a trip for.  It could be Cafe Pita but I'm sure I would rush to eat there.

I got a rare UK release of Sergio's 1969 album Ye-Me-Le today which features a somewhat different cover and the moniker What the World Needs Now.  I trimmed it down slightly and have framed it.  It's a beautiful and charming painting of a young practitioner of Candomble and it has always struck me very deeply for some reason.  I got the original LP probably exactly 41 years ago this week.  I was negative 20 at the time.  :)
