Post by: bk on December 17, 2010, 11:47:44 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes confirmed the rumor that a certain roly-poly person is coming to town, and now it is time for you to post until the Santa Cows come home.

As promised, the final Kritzerland releases of 2010 - I couldn't imagine going out with two more fun titles than these - read carefully to see why they're very special.  You know the drill, if you want them, they're each 19.98 - if you take both, shipping remains 3.75.  Go directly to paypal and use our paypal address, which is kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  I suspect these will be swift sellouts, so do not tarry or dally or even dally or tarry.

Kritzerland is proud to present two new limited edition soundtracks, our two final releases for 2010 – one world premiere CD release and one very special reissue:

CASINO ROYALE
Music Composed and Conducted by Burt Bacharach

and

GENGHIS KHAN
Music Composed and Conducted by Dusan Radic

CASINO ROYALE IS TOO MUCH… FOR ONE JAMES BOND!

In 1953, British author Ian Fleming created one of the most enduring cinematic characters with the publication of his first 007 novel, Casino Royale.  Thirteen years later, producer Charles K. Feldman (of What’s New Pussycat? fame) reimagined Fleming’s story as a large-scale, star-studded spy spoof inspired by the Bond mania that swept across the world in the 1960s. While not exactly delivering the kind of James Bond films audiences had loved and come to expect, Casino Royale has became a cult classic in the ensuing decades, a colorful addendum to the history of the 007 legacy.  With an all-star cast that included David Niven, Deborah Kerr, John Huston, Woody Allen, Peter Sellers, cameos by Jean-Paul Belmondo, David McCallum, and Peter O’Toole, and even featuring an authentic Bond girl, Ursula Andress (from Dr. No), the rag-tag craziness on view was directed by several different directors – John Huston, Joseph McGrath, Robert Parrish, with Val Guest overseeing the entire production.  As would be expected, the end result was eclectic, sometimes very funny, and sometimes just plain weird.

One person who immensely helped tie the whole thing together was the brilliant Burt Bacharach, who provided one of the most popular and universally applauded features of Casino Royale: its musical score. Hired on the strength of his music for What’s New Pussycat?, the composer was expected to bring the same kind of cheek to Feldman’s latest picture, offering a colorful kaleidoscope that went on to define the Swingin’ Sixties without referencing the typical musical spy vernacular. In fact, Bacharach’s approach is much closer to the Henry Mancini/Blake Edwards song scores such as The Pink Panther or The Party, which may explain the soundtrack’s extraordinary success on its own. The score was nominated for a Grammy and “The Look of Love” received an Oscar nomination.  Bacharach had, of course, had countless hits by the time of this film, and would go on to have countless more (one of the only pop song composers to have hits in every decade since the 1950s), as well as providing the soundtracks to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Arthur, and many other films.

This is the third CD release for Casino Royale (although both releases on Varese Sarabande were pretty much identical) – the original LP has long been considered one of the great audiophile releases, thanks to a nod in The Absolute Sound.  But due to an unfortunate accident, just prior to the transfer of the master tape, the tape was rewound too quickly and stripped of iron oxide, thereby compromising and damaging the tape.  The transfer could still be made and the CD came out – but anyone expecting it to sound like the LP was disappointed, and for obvious reasons.  For this release, we have spent much time in trying to alleviate some of the effects of the tape damage – our mastering engineer, James Nelson, has painstakingly and lovingly repaired numerous dropouts and other anomalies and we’ve worked very hard to get this to sound as good as it ever has or will, and the result is pretty amazing.  We’ve also added three short bonus cues, available on CD for the first time, including the original end credits vocal.   And, of course, we get the great performances of Dusty Springfield and Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass.

But one of the main reasons for doing this third CD release was to offer as a bonus a straight transfer of that original record – done from several pristine copies of the LP – so that the original sound, with no additional processing or EQ, is captured on CD for the very first time.   We leave it for others to judge whether that sound holds up for today’s listeners.  Given what happened to the master tape, this is as close to that original LP sound as we’re ever going to get.

This very special release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

“I ALLOW YOU TO LIGHT THIS LAST SPECTACLE”

Genghis Khan hit movie screens in 1965 at the tail end of a ten-year run of epic films on epic subjects.   While not up to the classics that had preceded it (Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments, Spartacus, El Cid, and others), it wasn’t really trying to be – in fact, it was more of a boy’s adventure film, but with a little sex in it.  It was one of many multi-national films made at the time, with an irresistible cast of actors, including Omar Sharif, Stephen Boyd James Mason, Robert Morley, Francoise Dorleac, Telly Savalas, Eli Wallach, Woody Strode, Michael Hordern, and hordes of extras splashing across the Technicolor and Panavision screen.  As to historical accuracy – well, no.  As to entertainment – well, yes, especially seen today.  It’s one of those “they don’t make ‘em like that anymore” movies and one looks back on some of these films rather fondly.  The film did not do well at the box-office and wasn’t well-reviewed, but seen today it’s a really fun adventure yarn.

Helping the film enormously is the grand, robust, and adventure-filled score of Dusan Radic.  A Yugoslavian composer born in 1929, Radic had previously scored many films in his home country, as well as being very prolific in the classical world, but became known in America with two 1960s films – The Long Ships and, a year later, Genghis Khan, both of which thankfully received LP releases.  Those LP releases were must-haves for those who loved and collected soundtracks back then.   The score of Genghis Khan is real old-fashioned movie music – music in classic adventure mode with themes galore, whether a heroic march or a beautiful love theme. Radic’s music propels the film from scene to scene, which helps the pace of the two-hour plus film immeasurably.  It’s a shame Radic didn’t continue to work on American films.

The original soundtrack release of Genghis Khan was on Liberty Records.  For this first release on CD we’ve used the original album masters housed in the vaults at Capitol/EMI.   Although there was both a mono and stereo LP release, both were, in fact, mono – a stereo release simply never existed – we present the CD in mono as it was recorded.  We also include two bonus tracks formerly available only on an overseas pressing of the LP soundtrack.  It is a treat to bring the music of Dusan Radic and Genghis Khan to a new generation of soundtrack fans – just as with the film (they don’t make ‘em like that anymore), so it is with Dusan Radic’s score – they don’t write ‘em like that anymore.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the last week of January – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

So, this past Thursday was our annual Holiday Potluck at work...it was also the day of my new supervisor's retirement.  She'd been at Timberland for 19 years.  Anyway, when she announced way back in April (I think) that she was going to retire in December, she came to my cubicle and asked if I could play at her retirement party the song from that show where I wore the Carmen Miranda outfit (you know the outfit).  The show was Harlequin Productions' "Stardust for Christmas" in 1995.  I sang "Boom Chicka Boom," from Nick & Nora.  I have the original Broadway cast recording and I said that I would be happy to play it.  Well, I recently remembered that I also have the videotape of the Stardust show and thought that it would be a lot funnier if I actually made a DVD of the song and played that.  Well, I did!  Everyone loved it!  A couple of people suggested that post it to YouTube, so I did!  If you want to see me in performance in the Carmen Miranda drag, click HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEVAEYf2cSM).

If you don't want to see it, don't click HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEVAEYf2cSM).

Today I begin my low-residue diet for the two weeks of my medication regime.

It's basically low-fibre foods, Wonder bread, highly processed things or chicken breasts (no skin or gristle)

Here are a couple of links for those who might be interested in what I'll be eating. It's not a diet to be on for a long time because you miss many nutrients and other important nutritional extras.

Good morning, all! Around 5:30 am I was awake and disturbing the neighbors with a terrible coughing fit that lasted too long. I am sick with this cold and I am extremely sick of this cold.

I am up early to hit the post office first thing to send off several packages to friends hither and yon. Following that I will vacuum, tidy up the apartment, and work on reports for BABES IN TOYLAND and the Cinderella show by Mr Victor Herbert. My shopping is essentially finished, it's just the wrapping and distribution taking my time this week.

In 1958, my family took a 2-week vacation to Tucson AZ for the holiday. My dad's stepbrother Jay and his wife had moved to Arizona in the late 1940s because of recommendation from the doctors treating their daughter's asthma and rheumatic fever. The car trip  from Ohio to Arizona took us three or four days and I remember that crossing Texas seemed three or four eons. On our last day in Tucson my mother became ill, her usual pattern when it wasn't about her, and the return trip with her pissing and moaning over how poorly she felt was sheer hell.

So, Richard and I left home about noon yesterday and headed to Oxford, OH, where he met up with other current and alumni glee club members for rehearsal.  The graduation ceremony started at 3pm and was quite lovely.  We left OX just before 5 and headed to Cincinnati for a surprise 60th birthday party for Richard's brother David at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse.  He was, indeed, surprised to find 30 of his friends/family there when he was expecting to have quiet Friday dinner with his wife and their neighbor whose son (their son's best friend) who's home from the service.

What neither David nor his wife knew was that THEIR son Christopher was also home and he turned up to take his father's drink order.  I was standing right next to Kathy and I thought she was going to pass out.  Christopher has been stationed in Okinawa and recently returned from Afghanistan.  We hadn't seen him since Thanksgiving 2007.

It was a fun, festive evening and I kind of blew my diet...

This morning I am going to my niece's ballet "recital". I put quotes around the word because there are only 7 kids in her class. And I suspect the teachers will be doing the dance with the kids following them (that is what they did for their hip hop recital).

Then my sister has to go to a baby shower so I am taking my niece to a birthday party at a place called Fundomundo. You get to jump around and play.  My mom gets to skip everything I've mentioned and babysit the baby.  I figure what I'm doing is more fun. Although the mom I would know at the birthday party is the one hosting the baby shower, so she won't be there.  Well I have met the parents of the birthday girl a few times.

I said I would go swimming once a week for the winter. But have not done that yet. Maybe next week or the week after.

Thanks for so many good wishes greeting my arrival, from ol' pals and young, George, Michael S, Fred!, Elmore!, Ben!, JRand, Laura, Drux, Gins, Jennifer!!!

Today I arrive at the theater at 0900, to get a script written overnight by one of six playwrights who began work at 8 last night... I don't yet know who is my director, nor who else might be in my cast, nor anything about the character I'll play, nor the story!! We rehearse all day, and play the show tonight! It's the second 24-hour plays program this Fall, as we slide into the end of our 3rd season. We'll be extending our LA premiere of Cormack McCarthy's THE SUNSET LIMITED after the holidays for all of January - selling out, absolute rave reviews from the Times, all the other papers, Ovation Recommended, alla that - booked solid through the run which ends tomorrow - so we decided to bring it back the first Thursday of 2011 and play another month. Never close a money-maker, if you can avoid it!!! Anyhow - that's my plan for this 62nd birthday!!!

Well, looks like I won't make a 7 am yoga class (I usually take the 10 AM class) before I head over to the theater... Question: how old would you be if you didn't know how old you are??? I must say that, at 62, my dad was still very fit and youthful - so I always expected to be quite young until age 87 - which is when Joe Orloff stopped playing baseball...

I've mopped the floors and I suppose it's time to proceed with the rest of the apartment. I'd rather have asome vodka and tonic and go back to bed. I guess it's this work ethic that's kept me from being an alcoholic.

I'm not sure what my plans are for this afternoon.  I'm pretty caught up with the cleaning and decorating around the house.  I only need to get a few odds and ends for gifts.  I really don't want to head out to the stores, especially with this being the last weekend before Christmas and the threat of a snowstorm tomorrow night. Maybe I'll just catch up with the Christmas music listening and putter.  Tonight, I might meet up with friends and go see HOW DO YOU KNOW.

Tonight, I'm headed to a Christmas party for USAA where something called the TV Band or the Band from TV is playing. It's apparently a bunch of TV actors from shows I've never seen, like "Heroes." The only names I recognize are Hugh Laurie from "House" and Darius Rucker, formerly Hootie.

Got to remember to take my earplugs. The ears are still sensitive after the ear infection.

I'm awake and feeling like a fought a battle.  Vanilla Cherry Swirl Nyquil seems to do the job, but the last few nights I have dreamt some really weird stuff.  I think I'll try and sleep without it tonight.

2 shows of A Christmas Carol - The Musical today.  It's suppose to storm all weekend.  Right now, it's calm.

And these are the days of our lives.

I was reading a very interesting article by the religion editor of our local newspaper...it was about the "Keeping Christ in Christmas" movement, and what it was really supposed to be about it.

Evidently it is about observing Christmas as a charitable time, giving to those less fortunate rather then going the consumerism route and buying presents for your friends and family.

I like the idea, but I wonder if all the people in the mall parking lot with those "Keep Christ in Christmas" bumper stickers even have a clue! LOL!

No. In fact a couple of the friends who keep talking and talking and talking about it are almost belligerent. And they behave that way with shop keepers, clerks, etc. Nothing Christian or Christmas-like in that.

Low-Residue Diet (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/low-residue-diet/MY00745)

More Low-Residue (http://www.healthcastle.com/low-residue-fiber-diet.shtml)

It is much healthier than my self imposed diet to treat what turned out to be IMD.  I still eat a good amount of basmati.

Wow, what a surprise.  Was there a dry eye in the house?

Then it was off to Petco,  It became very clear to me last night while sitting in what will be the new den, that I needed some cat furniture.   They love that room and needed a scratching post at the minimum.  So I got something a bit smaller thaqn what's in the living room.   they all jumped all over it and played and played immediately

:)

We purchased Christmas gifts for Sherlock, Yogi, & Kitty today.

After tomorrow's matinee, we're done!  It's a great show and definitely has been a lot of fun to be involved with.

And since I need to stop at my sister's house before I go to the theater, I must be off.

Until later!

Wow, what a surprise.  Was there a dry eye in the house?

Nope!

Kitty if fine and stays in the bedroom/bathroom area.  The bathroom has a heated floor which she loves.  Sometimes I go in and visit with her, if she isn't hiding from me.  When Craig goes to Olympia I'll take a book in there and spend more time with her.  Poor Yogi is going to a kennel.

The retirement community where we're staying next weekend is in the same corporate family as where my Mom lives.  At my Mom's campus, they have volunteers who decorate all the guest houses for Christmas, but apparently not at the one up here.  I'm going to have to bring a few decorative items or it will be a really dreary weekend.

Be glad they do it at your Mom's place or you would have extra work every year ;)

I need to get more decorations out.  I have to be subtle about it so they don't get too "junky" for Keith.  When he worked and traveled I could do what ever I liked.  I prefer to have him home. :)

We have a snow sled with a wooden snowman on it we purchased at a craft fair the first Christmas here.  Every year we put it on the porch & the wind knocks it down.  I just stood it up by the fireplace (the snowman is flat on the sled) and it looks good.

No, DR Jane, they don't decorate the residents' houses, just the guest houses.  Each of these campuses has several vacant units that they residents can reserve for guests.  We thought it would be nicer to spend Christmas there than at the Fairfield Inn.  We will bring some of our favorite Christmas foodstuffs and one present each.  We'll save our stocking presents to open when we all get back to Middletown and can include my Mom.

DR JohnG - Was Buz & Ned's Real Barbecue (http://www.buzandneds.com/#/home/) the barbecue place in Richmond you were thinking of trying out?  Buz & Ned's is good barbecue, however, their "pulled" items are not North Carolina-style (vinegar-based sauce) which seems to the style of most Richmonders prefer. I usually get their Baby-Back and Spare Pork Ribs, or their Beef Ribs (which, imho, are the best thing on their menu).

DR JohnG - The "Chicharron de Queso" made me giggle. I'd say it was a "Frico Crisp". ;) -Although, I still remember Natalie Dupree making a "cheese cracker" on her PBS show. She simply sliced slices off a brick of cheddar cheese, placed them on a non-stick baking sheet, then baked them.  -A true "cheese crisp".

So...

Yesterday morning, ConEd finally finished re-wiring the building next door. Alas, when they cleared - cut - the old wires out, they managed to nick one of the Time-Warner cables.  Thankfully, Time-Warner was on the scene an hour later, and got service restored to our part of the grid over the course of the past 24 hours.

And speaking of crying...

I finally(!) saw my first live production of Amahl and the Night Visitors earlier today.  It was presented by The Little Orchestra Society (http://www.littleorchestra.org/) at Avery Fisher Hall.

The orchestra was set up on the front part of the stage, and the house set was on a platform behind the orchestra. It was a very well-done production. Not too bare bones, not too slick. Just home-y enough, in a good sense. The humorous aspects weren't too overplayed, and the miracle was simple and beautifully simple.  It just happened - like all good miracles should.

My favorite moment was right at the end as Amahl was waving good-bye to his Mother and his house... A number of kids in the audience started waving back at him.  -And, yes, that really made me cry. ;)

Two show day was great.  I must say, in the 5 years we've done this show, this year is the best.  Not only on stage, but off as well.  The 80+ people seem to get along well, and play together well.  Characters are solid, the singing is good, the band is great (2 keys, bass, drums, 2 violins, 1 flute - no horn this year, and man it's better!!!)  We close tomorrow, but I'm kinda sad because we're having such fun.  Usually I can't wait to finish, but this year's production could run some more and I'd be happy.
