Glory be I slept until almost 7am!

Amazing what a round of drugs and a night of sleep can do.

I feel better but it's still no trips out for this boy. I'll be in all day eating jello (which we forgot to make so will make this morning), mandarin oranges (canned) which actually are a favorite of mine and other low-reside foodstuffs. No coffee or cereral (since I, in essence, can't have dairy due to the timings of the drugs). Oh, well, it could be worse, I could still be in the hospital.

Sunday morning greetings!  Fr. Richard will have 2 senior clergymen to assist him in today's service - a bishop and an archdeacon.  We are due to meet them for breakfast in about an hour.

See you when we get back to Middletown - vibes for all who need them!

I watched the original TRUE GRIT again about a week ago.

I agree with BK that it's no classic, but it's certainly a much better film than I remembered it being.

Wayne was terrific and, despite what some people have quipped, I do think he earned the Oscar that year.

The original "True Grit" was one of the rare movies I saw at a theater as a child. Because it was a treat going to the theater, I remember loving most every minute of it. I seem to remember Wayne being tall in the saddle and most everybody else was on the ground beneath him. That's probably not true, just my impressions.

Darius Rucker was good last night. He did a solo show that lasted close to midnight. The Band from TV, minus Hugh Laurie, was fun, did plenty of covers and I knew not a single person in the band.

DR Jose, Ned's was the barbecue place in Richmond. Only I think it was exceptionally bad service more than anything that people hated about the place. Not being their style of barbecue might have been the icing on the cake.

I don't have a tree being Jewish, but usually we all go over to decorate my aunt's tree. But she is going to be out of town for Christmas this year. So no decorating. I actually love decorating Christmas trees.

My sis has a tree but they decorated it themselves.

Fundomundo was not that fun. But my niece liked it. And we ended up staying 30 minutes late so her and the birthday girl could play togethe alone. My niece does not get to see this girl that much since my niece is 3 months older and is in kindergarten. But the other girl is still in daycare.

BK, I am enormous fan of the original TRUE GRIT. I do not think it is Wayne's best performance, though a mighty fine one.  I advise you to go see the new TRUE GRIT.  It is a perfectly respectable remake and a fine movie in its own right.  Some things are better than the original (notably Matt Damon in the Glenn Campbell role); some things not as good; a lot pretty much the same.  But, as it's been over forty years, there is no reason not to return to this material and the Coens Bros. and their cast do a worthwile piece of work.

I will be having a visitor around 1pm.

Applesauce is a great way to take my pills. They have a bad taste especially if they don't go down on the first swallow. They leave a bad taste on the tongue. This morning with my applesauce I just pushed one in the middle of a spoonful and swallowed and didn't even know it was there.

Good morning, all! Around 8pm last night I took a double slug of Nyquil and by 9pm I was uconscious. Around 10am this morning I debated getting out of bed and stayed there for another hour. I am now bathed, shaved, dressed and pondering my next move.

Yesterday, I achieved quite a lot until the bad health took over when my adrealine dropped: critical notes on LADY OF THE SLIPPER numbers, personal business pertaining to the Herbert recording, the really important post office shipments, and cleaning and vacuuming the apartment. Today I have to hit Staples and use their color photocopier, get some more cold meds, stop at the market, and get some more writing done. I did address the issue of the check I'm waiting on and learned it was mailed on Friday! Hopefully, this is the end of the late payment madness.

DR Jose, I wish I could have seen Amahl! It was directed by my friend John Sheehan who ran for years the late lamented Opera Ensemble of New York. About five years before the successful, and inferior, production of SHE LOVES ME at the Roundabout, John directed it with Gregg Edelman as Georg and Davis Gaines as Kodaly, conducted by Jonathan Tunick, and it was one of the most glorious things I've ever seen. When I was heading home from the production, Jonathan drove by in his van, picked me up and I found his other passengers were the late Ed Kleban's girlfriend Linda(?) and Sheldon Harnick! We all went off to dinner It was a great night.

DR Laura, I thought all church nativities were dressed by "Dad's Bathrobe Inc."

Keep them vibes coming! Tomorrow I'm calling the doctor for an appointment.

From Matthew:
Quote
Two show day was great.  I must say, in the 5 years we've done this show, this year is the best.  Not only on stage, but off as well.  The 80+ people seem to get along well, and play together well.  Characters are solid, the singing is good, the band is great (2 keys, bass, drums, 2 violins, 1 flute - no horn this year, and man it's better!!!)  We close tomorrow, but I'm kinda sad because we're having such fun.  Usually I can't wait to finish, but this year's production could run some more and I'd be happy.

:)

It shall be interesting reading about your summer ;)

DR Jane if nobody else wants a tree but you couldn't you just decorate a smaller tree?

I have a mini table top tree but can't find the mini decorations for it.  I might have dumped the old tree with the worn decorations.  I have more decorations to scatter around the house today, including beautifully wrapped empty gift boxes I have saved over the years.

You can always go old fashioned and string popcorn and cranberries on a thread and use it as garlands on the tree

I used to string popcorn every year until a friend mentioned she kept hers in the freezer to be reused.  It was a pain to string back then, no way is my shoulder doing it today.

You could make a paper chain like we used to do as little kids

No thanks. ;D  I never did that as a child, not that I can remember anyway.

I have a couple of baskets out, each with a ribbon.  One basket is filled with pine cones the other a mixture which includes potpourri & cinnamon sticks.

Our visitor just left and someone will be coming around 5:30. I will nap and then greet our second visitor.

Anthony is going to the store for white rice (we only have wild rice here) and vegetable broth. We have boiled chicken so I (he) will make some rice, broth and chicken for dinner. Compared to what I've eaten over the past few days it sounds good.

Then I will stop by the main branch of the Post Office at 34th and post a box of ornaments I bought my sister-in-law JoAnn. It will keep me out of the PO tomorrow. I hope it isn't too insane there today.

I watched the original TRUE GRIT again about a week ago.

I agree with BK that it's no classic, but it's certainly a much better film than I remembered it being.

Wayne was terrific and, despite what some people have quipped, I do think he earned the Oscar that year.

I am of the opinion that Wayne was given the Oscar because folks thought he might not make many (if any) more films.  Four classic performances were nominated that year...and then there was Wayne.  The best performance of that year was turned in by Peter O'Toole (as was the case in virtually any year in which he appeared in a film), followed by Voigt, Hoffman and Burton.

It wasn't even prime Wayne.  His greatest moment was in "The Quiet Man".

The trip to Johnston SC is going smoothly.

I've eaten VERY well, thanks.

I have played numerous games of Skipbo with mom and aunt...have kicked some Skipbo booty and had my Skipbo booty kicked, as well.

We have had heavy rains and now we have sunshine.  It's cold, but the sun shines.

Went to church this morning.  There were six people singing in the choir.  The cantata had 34 members in the choir.  Sigh.  Lots of folks only volunteered for the cantata...some from other churches.

The six we had, however, had very nicely blended voices.  They, plus the choir director -- who faced the congregation during hymns -- sounded very good.

We had lunch at the Persimmon Hill Country Club.  Had more turkey and dressing, plus green beans (the ubiquitous southern vegetable of all seasons), sweet potato fries, a salad and a slice of Millionaire Pie.

My mom is off to a funeral service right now.  Miss Emma Butler died Friday night at the age of 101.  I did not know her, but folks around here have known her all "their" lives.

Tonight is the church Christmas party...mostly for the young'uns.  Santa will hand each young'un a present at some point.  They will serve finger food.  I think I'll pass on that.   We shall see.

Tomorrow, my Mom, my Aunt Doris and I will venture northward to Greenville SC for our annual trek to shopping mall, the city's main street sites and our annual tour of places were my folks and I lived in Greenville from 1957-1989.  For me, it's four places.  For my Mom, it's six places.  All of them had memorable Christmases for me, and I shall be ruminating upon them this year.

Tuesday e'en, my Aunt Doris and Uncle Rock, cousin Debra and her hubby Rob (and maybe their 19-year-old daughter Becky) will come over for dinner.  I spent yesterday slaving over a hot stove prepping my spaghetti sauce.  I made two large pots of it.  Half has been ladled into pint containers and put into my Mom's freezer for use in the new year.

I am enjoying this visit.

I'll see it when it comes to DVD because I like the Coen Brothers.

Actually, I think that Wayne's two greatest performances were in THE COWBOYS and THE SHOOTIST.

I don't know, Arnold.  A lot of my relatives worked in textiles over the years.  There's a possibility Dot did, too.  I know she retired from Department of Social Services, though, so it would have been MANY years back if she also worked in textiles (which is quite possible).  How far back are you remembering?

I've said this before (and I'm not the first one to say it), but:

You don't remake a hit...only a flop.

TRUE GRIT may not be a classic, but it was a major hit and is fondly remembered by people who saw it.

I'm sure that Jeff Bridges is excellent in the role of "Rooster".  He seems like perfect casting, but as good as he might be, he will always be competing with the memory of John Wayne.

To that last comment, I completely concur!!!  However...they don't make movies any more for folks who remember John Wayne "at the movies."  Any more than they make movies any more folks who consider the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" a sci-fi classic.

Who these people are that they remake classics (or memorable films) for are people who cannot be bothered with classics...with anything black and white, or that starred anyone they never heard of.

We have a wealth of film history at our fingertips and several generations of young people who won't let their fingers do the walking.

Thus...unneeded/unnecessary/(and usually underthought) remakes.  Overproduced, naturally.

On the other hand...Jeff Bridges as Rooster ought to be a real treat.  Bridges is an actor!!!  Wayne was...Wayne...a force of nature, but essentially the same character film after film.

I totally agree with you that he was robbed the year he lost to Cliff Robertson.  THE LION IN WINTER is, in my opinion, his finest performance.

[BTW: If you've read my book, you'll know why I was happy when LION lost Best Picture.]

The problem that O'Toole had the year he lost to Wayne was that he was in a not very good picture (i.e. GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS).

Frankly, I'd rather watch Wayne or Bogart or Cagney or Tracy or any of the great stars of yesterday than most of the "actors" that we have today.

No disrespect intended to Mr. Bridges, whose work I like.

Love your tree, Jane.  Glad Keith likes it.  Glad you found the decorations

Thanks.  I didn't find the decorations I used to put on the little tree, which I'm sure I trashed.  These are nicer and would have gone on a big tree.

I've put out a few more decorations around the house and some of the pretty boxes, one of which even fit under the little tree.  I wrapped Sherlock, Yogi & Kitty's presents in pretty bags and put them by the fireplace with the fake gifts.

I think I enjoyed those pretty boxes more than the gifts that were in them.  Most are from Bryan who began splurging on professional wrapping for me.

I went to see Sunset Blvd today at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA.  It was very enjoyable.  Florence Lacey plays Norma, DB Bonds is Joe and Susan Derry plays Betty Schaefer.

The stage is surrounded by the audience on three sides.  The designers were very creative in the use of limited space.  The staircase is on the left side of the stage as opposed to the center.  The orchestra is above and behind the stage in a very small space.  The car is on a track at the back of the stage but also runs on electricity according to the tour "guides" ( I went on a "backlot tour" after the show.  Two of the actors were the guides--the aforementioned Susan Derry and another actor who had one of the smaller roles.

I don't have a tree being Jewish, but usually we all go over to decorate my aunt's tree. But she is going to be out of town for Christmas this year. So no decorating. I actually love decorating Christmas trees.

My sis has a tree but they decorated it themselves.

I do understand that, Jane, but I was just wondering if her sister put up a Christmas tree even though she is Jewish.  I have a great many Jewish friends who celebrate Christmas (minus the Jesus part) and actually do have Christmas trees.

I am also a prime example that not all Christians have Christmas trees.

My step-sister just called me; she didn't make it. I am in a state of shock. She had planned to come in to xmas shop but didn't feel up to it. This doesn't seem real. Thanks for all the vibes; her family really needs them now because she was the center of their universe and they were all so close; really extensions of each other. My father, who is bedridden has no idea what's going on. He will be completely devastated---he loved her so much and I don't even know if he will want to survive without her. I am going up tomorrow to break the news to him with my step-sisters. How do you tell someone something so horrific? Vibes for her family would be so much appreciated. It's like the world has been yanked out from under us all.

I'm a little freaked out right now--we're hoping our current tenants are just discombobulated by their move to their new home, which was evidently a comedy of errors (and which included damage to our house, which they've agreed to take care of), but they are saying that we told them they don't need to pay rent after January.  Ummm. . .no.  They don't need to pay rent AFTER we find a new tenant, whenever that is.  Luckily I have everything in emails.

Saw the first two parts of a British trilogy called "Red Riding." Murder, corruption, evil police, sex and mayhem. Can't wait to see the final part.

I am drinking a beer.; the only way I can get to sleep so I can get through tomorrow. I am at a complete loss. I so appreciate all the vibes---the family will need them, big time, and as my step-mom was my father's main caregiver and brain-trust of what meds and every little detail it takes, I hope between us we'll be able to know the right things to do. I'm so worried what will happen to him without her; even if we're there 'round the clock; she was his world. He left my mom for this woman and it took a long time for me to accept her, and finally love her and her children as my own family. I never in a million years imagined that she would outlive him because she's about 15 years younger. It all seems very surreal and impossible.

Loved the tree photos today, since I'm not up to decorating one of my own this year.

Dear Jane, my cookies are simple, 4 ingredients + flavor (lemon rind or ground almonds), and a cookie press (my life saver).  Simple bite size cookies.   Just enough to go with coffee in the morning.    ;D

After all the heavy holiday food we eat.  ;D

Had a really nice dinner at the Eclectic Cafe - fun conversation and yummilicous pasta.

Then I came home, chatted some more, and then approved the pages for the two new releases on the Kritzerland site, and sent the remaining three tracks to the web guy, so everything is ready for tomorrow, including a new "News" column about the Casino Royale CD.  I hope it makes interesting reading - in fact, it's already up if anyone wants to check it out.

I have to say, the LP transfer is spectacular-sounding, although I think our remastering of the tape is pretty amazing because it even fixes certain anomalies that are on the LP and that were obviously on the original album master tape.  I'm guessing if we'd fibbed and said the LP transfer was from an undiscovered tape copy we would have gotten away with it - that's how good this transfer is - you would never know it's from LP and is, in fact, the best LP transfer I've ever heard.

Amy, my condolences to you and your father and your families. :'(

As requested earlier by DR Laura, here is my blue Christmas tree. It is even purtier when the Christmas lights are on.

My, that is quite...blue!  I love it!

Today, we had our last performance of "Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol."  There was a full house and even a waiting list.  I think that they got everyone in, though.  After the show, we had to strike the set, but two good things about that.  One was that we didn't have to take everything out of the theater.  The next show is building their set tomorrow, so we were able to leave about half of our set there!  Also, since the theater group has their own theater AND storage unit, we just had to move the pieces across a parking lot...no loading trucks that aren't big enough for everything and hauling the stuff miles down the freeway!  It only took about an hour, then we were done.  Onto whatever's next! :)
