Title: I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
Post by: bk on December 20, 2010, 12:11:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were cozy and warm, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've told me that they'll be home for Christmas.  We'll just see about that.

TOD:

I will start with Kritzerland's CDs of EARTH VS THE SPIDER and ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE. Two favorite soundtracks of mine...now just hoping for VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT and DAY OF THE OUTLAW to someday show up on Kritzerland!!!!

The 1964 Tokyo, Japan performance of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (copies of which are winging their way to JRand and BK...if they have not already arrived, and by now they should have)

The Cd soundtrack to the new Bollywood thriller A FLAT, which I simply cannot stop listening to.

I am very sleepy and about to head to bed, so that is all that is coming to me at this moment.

Good morning, all! Another night of peculiar dreams and little sleep, but I did sleep quite a lot the night before so perhaps it will even out tomorrow with a night of normal sleep and pleasant dreams,

Today I have to be at the Loesser office at 11 to assemble Acts Two and Three of the Jan 10, 1956 vocal score. Assembling the first act went very smoothly - I think we ended up with only page we could not locate - so I hope the same holds true for Acts 2 and 3. After that, I get myself home in hopes that some checks will arrive in the post.

I think I will make some ginger tea in hopes that it aids in breaking up this crud invading my respiratory system. I've got to look over some music pertaining to LADY OF THE SLIPPER and continue through my textual amendments.

I've bought a ton of CDs this year, and I think the nicest surprise from Amazon.co.uk was finding the old Lehman Engel recording of THE DESERT SONG with Nelson Eddy and the spectacular Doretta Morrow had been put on CD!

Other CD's:
VERT-VERT, Jacques Offenbach (Opera Rara)
TALES OF HOFFMANN (Powell film soundtrack), Jacques Offenbach (Pearl)
ROSE-MARIE, Rudolf Friml (Julie Andrews & Giorgio Tozzi reissue)
EMMA, music from the new BBC adaptation
PROMISES PROMISES (Kritzerland), the most pleasant surprise of the year!

And my two favorite holiday collections for 2010:

Aside from the original Broadway cast album of WICKED, he only CDs I've bought during the past year have been from Kritzerland. (e.g. SUGAR, PROMISES, PROMISES, BILLY BARNES, THE UNFORGIVEN, A BRIDGE TOO FAR, etc.)

I'm going to try to finish my screenplay this week.

I've only got another 10-15 pages to go, but I've got to tie everything up and that's not always the simplest thing to do.

Many years ago, I was in SLC over the holidays visiting my parents and I wandered into a little used record store near downtown.  They had a FABOO collection of old OBCs there that I had never been able to find--stuff like "First Impressions," "Christine," etc., all sealed, mint, stereo.  I went a little nuts and bought a pile o'LP's for myself that day.  :)

I'm actually trying to remember everything I found there--I remember I was gobsmacked at the time.  This was WAAAY before the internets, and I had been searching for rarer OBCs for years in Goldmine, etc., to no avail.  I know I picked up at least 5 or 6 really rare things that day, and none of them were hideously priced.

I once found a trove like that, but used and hideously overpriced. They had "Flahooley," the revival of "House of Flowers" (now on Kritzerland), and a few others. But I was poor and in college ... hey, that sounds like my upcoming year, if I ever hear about getting accepted into grad school.

Jane, if DS Craig isn't busy tonight, tell him to come to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts and attend (or even participate in) the Sing-Along Messiah (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/upcoming-events/2010/12/20/sing-a-long-messiah.html).  It's free!  I'm working concessions (which are not free, though) so I will be there. :)

Join us in a community sing-a-long!  Come to sing, come to listen as we delight in Handel's Messiah, a local tradition!  Brought to you by Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia and The Washington Center for the Performing Arts.

Went to check out the old house today.  The movers completely ran over the post holding the mailbox (as well as the neighbor's).  Huge mess, with gigantic tire tracks having destroyed probably 4 feet of the lawn.  Oy.  In the good news department, the inside of the house looks pretty darned good, even before the professional cleaning.  We're showing it to some San Diegans today--fingers crossed once again we can rent it ASAP.

Rent vibes for DR JMK.

I just got the good news: I got accepted into grad school. Yeah!

What school? What program?

Are you getting an assistantship?
I'm going to SUNY-Empire State, which is an online program to get a master's in liberal studies with a dual focus on education and communications. I hope to teach with the degree.

Now that I have been accepted, I can start looking to see if there's any aid out there.

And now, I must be off.  I'm picking up my friend Margo from the airport, and then we must hurry back to Olympia to work the aforementioned Sing-Along Messiah (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/upcoming-events/2010/12/20/sing-a-long-messiah.html) tonight.

I hope the traffic cooperates!

Until later!

Resume vibes for DR FJL.

DR MBARNUM just sent me the 1964 Japanese Recording of Annie Get Your Gun, which I am sure will be a NEW favorite of mine.

And you will note that the lead actor/singer is Akira Takarada, best known as the leading man in GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS, GODZILLA VS. THE THING, MONSTER ZERO, and numerous other Toho Studio sci-fi and samurai flicks! He has an excellent singing voice, I might add!

Richard and I are back to being a one-car couple for a week, so we've just returned from a couple of hours of errands.  Except for a stop at Kenwood Towne Center on our way to a dinner in Cincinnati tomorrow and a stop at Barnes & Noble on the way home, we're now finished with Christmas shopping.  We also went to the grocery for what I hope will be the last big shopping before the holiday weekend.  With that coming up and with two rounds of bad weather predicted for this week, it was pretty crazy there already.

It's great to find good news from DRs Elmore (checks) and John G (grad school) upon my return!

Safe and easy travel vibes for my DS Craig as he makes his way to Olympia!

If he's not busy tonight.

:D

I shall email this to him.  I suspect once he arrives, checks into a hotel and eats dinner he will crash for the night.

I am not amused.

Unless it's an emergency, my doctor is on vacation this week and has no free time next week. Nor is there any free time for any physician covering her vacation week. And my insurance is going up $100/month in January.

Did you ask to be put on a waiting list?  I also suggest calling every day to see if there is an opening.

HUGH MARTIN - THE BOY NEXT DOOR an autobiography by....Hugh Martin....is a most enjoyable book.

He talks personally but not TOO personally about himself.....which is a disappointment of a kind, but he also tells lots of stories about his time on Broadway and in Hollywood, at some of the most exciting times to be in both of those places.  He talks about his dealings with those who brought him along and those who stood in his way.....

It's a nice book - and makes me want to read the book DR ELMORE was talking about, the biography of Kay Thompson.

Got to go pick up Christmas cards.

If there are any good ones left.  Be careful.  The Reader's Digest wrote about a procrastinating couple who went out about this time and got the only cards they could find.  They hurriedly signed them, addressed them, and threw them in the mailbox at the Post Office.
When they got home, they finally got around to carefully reading it.     They had sent out about 100 cards that read:

"This Little Card Is Just to Say -
A Gift You'll Love Is On the Way!"

I had no idea this was finally published! I hear the curse is that he found God before he wrote it. I got to know Hugh slightly when I worked on BOYS FROM SYRACUSE in 1998. He's a lovely man. Had lots of bawdy stories about June Allyson and others.

June Allyson was carrying on with Richard Rodgers.

Martin wrote the book several years ago. I think the Library of Congress was involved in the publication.

For those who subscribe to NETFLIX, they have added a ton of movies that you can now stream....movies that are not available on DVD!

I have had a heyday adding movies to my list...tons of 1950s B movies I never thought would see the light of day!!!

I will only be able to watch them on my computer, but those who have a Wii or a Tivo box can watch them on there television...Comcast does not allow this with their DVRs  >:(

Just got home,  took the 101 freeway after a trip to the Fashion Square mall for my favorite vanilla and almond flavoring.  Only place I know to go is Williams Sonoma.

I believe Nielsen-Massey (http://www.nielsenmassey.com/vanillainformation.htm) - if that's the brand you like - is also carried at Sur La Table. I also like their Chocolate Extract; it adds a nice depth of flavor to cakes.

I will have to look for that. Martin's score for "Make a Wish" is one of my all-time favorites. I recently found out it was one of Sondheim's too. He apparently wore out a copy of the album and bought a second.

Lots of hysteria occurring on the various theater chat boards about the accident.  No one really knows what happened other than one of the Spiderman flying doubles' cable snapped and he fell.  We get "a few feet" to "thirty feet" - again, no official word has been released - it could be serious and it could be not as serious, but something bad clearly happened and it isn't the first time with this show.

A friend just posted on Facebook how much she loved "Spiderman." Guess she wasn't there tonight. That's horrible news, regardless of the extent of the fall.

Sad news about Steve Landesberg. I was a big "Barney Miller" fan. Always enjoyed his dry sense of humor.

Seems strange that Abe Vigoda would outlive him.

Just heard the sad news that Steve Landesberg has died.  Cancer.  I knew him quite well in the 1970s as he was dating Diana Canova for many years.

I just read about this when I got home. :(
