Well, you've read the notes, the notes told of the Do, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're about to have the night of the living MOO.

At least in my one day of shopping I was able to buy and wrap enough presents to get me through the next two days. Tomorrow I will tell my mom about my step-mother passi g away. I have been putting that off because I know she might say"karma" because this is the woman who stole her husband but over the years I've grown fond of her and don't want to hear that. I bought a card for her to send to my Dad. I hope she does.

I also miss those who have left and hope they will return, especially those who've been here since I joined and I've gotten to know, like Singdaw, Tomovoz,  Wfo, Der B, Francois, MattH, RodZinsky etc. I also wish Dan in Toronto would return; he wasn't posting much when I joinedbut he must check in occasionally because he sent me a condolence note...very sweet from someone I didn't know.

I'm up too, Amy. Don't know why but I woke at about 2:30 and haven't been able to get back to sleep. I know that when we get on the train to Long Island I will probably fall asleep but for now I'm up and I've been listening to my mainstay radio the Beeb.

It sounds like you're hanging in Dear Amy. I'm glad to hear that.

My husband doesn't snore. I'm glad for that too.

My new digital cable box also has a DVR. So I have The Thin Man to watch.

Monday and into Tuesday TCM will have a tribute to Blake Edwards. They will be showing Breakfast At Tiffany's, The Days Of Wine and Roses, The Pink Panther, Victor/Victoria.

I would love to have seen Experiment in Terror, The Party and his versions of Wild Rovers and The Carey Treatment

Good morning, all! At 10am I see my barber for my Christmas hairdo, which will look just as it does now, only shorter.

Last night I slept rather well. I remember one weird dream after my awake period around 5 am: I was n rehearsal for something and very worried abot the choreography, because in reality I have two left feet and this huge shortcoming was aparent to me in this dream. The choreographer kept assuring me I would be fine. I don't think I was.

After the barber, which is about a block from tyhe Radio City Christmas tree,I will walk over to see the tree. It's not so much fun when it isn't lit up at night, but I will see it before Christmas and then wander about looking at wondowns before I head back uptown. I brought some work home from the office, so I have things to do here until I leave for an event chex DR fjl and Skip Kennon. Gifts are wrapped, and I look forward to the festivities. The big question is, is it as 6:00 or 6:30? I must find out.

TOD:
DVD: three Netflix items, I'm thnking I may watch one of the NUTCRACKER performances on DVD, perhaps the Royal Ballet
CD: various and sundried holiday albums, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway
    VCR: festive smut

I've been out and about: egg nog, bourbon, cointreau are nestled in their proper places. I stopped at Barnes & Noble to see my friends, especially Val and Patty, and to drop off a bag of candy to keep the spirits up; B&N on Christmas Eve can be a zoo.

I will have some lunch and wrap gifts for Ron, Dona amd Charlotte for tomorrow. Do I need a nap?

I'm dropping by some friends later who use Martha Stewart's Eggnog (http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/favorite-eggnog) recipe... And even though it doesn't need it, they kind of "double" it. Needless to say, it's usually a good thing to have a hearty and starchy meal beforehand.

I'm awake.  Party in SF was boring, so we came home early.  Too many people in a small space.  I spent part of the evening sitting on the floor.  Today, Christmas Eve, I need to do some things for Mass tonight (3 Mass's in fact) and hit the grocery store for a minute, then head over to church. (about 1:00pm I guess).  Tomorrow, (I still don't know how this happened) I have the day off!!!  My best friend and fellow pianist will play at church for me.  First time in years that I will have Christmas Day off.  Next year I promised that she could have the day off!  It will be nice to linger at home in the morning before heading to my mom's for brunch.

THE TOP FIVE HOLIDAY MOVIES ACCORDING TO MOVIEFONE

5.)  WHITE CHRISTMAS
4.)  SCROOGED
3.)  MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET
2.)  IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE
and the #1 holiday movies is:

1.)  THE CHRISTMAS STORY

Not my choices, but, "Oh well."

5 and 4 aren't on my list! I'd add THE REF and one of the versions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Alistair Sim, George C Scott, or Patrick Stewart. I love CHRISTMAS STORY!

Well, maybe by next Christmas, you will have CHRISTMAS STORY - THE MUSICAL on the Great White Way.

It got good reviews in Seattle.

I would like to see it. My friend Larry Blank does very good work and I'm sure the show sounds fantastic! The problem with all these musicalizations of wonderful films is will the cast measure up to its originals? I don't want to see a Dolly Parton-Reese Witherspoon-whoever impersonation after the real McCoy!

Keith has decided he wants the new Nook.  When he called Barnes and Noble they had just gotten some in and he was able to pay for one over the phone.  I guess we will be taking a trip up there sometime today, or he and Bryan will go.  It will be a good way for me to find out if I like it.

Tonight's the night we go to my cousin Debra's for Christmas Eve Dinner.

My Uncle Rock is barbecuing chickens for it!!  I have no idea what the rest of the menu will be.  In years past, I have twice prepared spaghetti sauce for a nice spaghetti dinner.  We've had hamburgers, steak and pork loin on other Christmases.

It promises to be loud, crowded, and Debra's hubby's brother will undoubtedly make his annual visit with his cousin and daughter in tow just as we are all eating.  His daughter will undoubtedly have a plate and some dessert during the 10 minutes or so they will stay.  She's a (perpetually) growing little girl.

My Mom will undoubtedly stay longer than I wish to...out of politeness/decorum, of course...but we will inevitably escape and come home where we will exchange our gifts before bedtime.

Tomorrow night, it will start all over again, with the same people (sans the brother/cousin/daughter of Debra's hubby) and more who cannot come tonight.  It will be across the street.  I shall stay just as long as I can stand it...hopefully to have some meaningful conversation with a few people during what promises to be several hours of confusion, chaos and perpetual self-congratulations/self-promotion/self-involvement of several of the attendees (it's the one-upmanship syndrome that requires each to trumpet himself to the skies at every gathering).

I will take what I can of it, and then I shall retreat to my home and the television.

Howasomever:

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!

We've had 4 1/2-5 inches of snow.  It's beautiful

Well, after 8 years, Woody has gotton over his "wonderment" at snow. He was appropriately annoyed at last weeks blizzard (a walloping 2 inches) that kept the car prisoner in the drive for two days. The streets were cleaned promptly but the ice patch at the top of the driveway hill was impassable for a few days. (To escape from our drive, you need to roar up a steep hill and do a controlled right turn onto the road; if you turn a bit too tight, you clip our retaining wall, if you turn too wide, you wipe out the neighbor across the street's mail box; and, because the car has front wheel drive, you lose traction when the car is trying to crest the hill - little weight on the front wheels .)

Druxy, I defy you not to guess the putative "big twist" in SALT (the one toward the end).  I saw it coming within seconds of the film's setup.

Actually, my wife and I both suspected it almost from the beginning...but neither of us said anything.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie.  I liked the fact that most of the action looked like well devised stunts, rather than CGI.

On the other hand, I felt that during the last half of the picture, the story (i.e. the twists) became a bit too far-fetched for my taste.

Have a great evening, stay warm and cozy. ;)

My choices:

1.  SCROOGE
2.  MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL (okay it was a TV show)
3.  WHITE CHRISTMAS
4.  HOLIDAY INN
5.  GEORGE C. SCOTT'S A CHRISTMAS CAOL (also TV)

Myopic or not, Magoo would knock "Miracle" off my list.

It has been eight years already, wow!

Afternoon all.

We are on Long Island after an uneventful train trip.

I had some chicken with rice and then took my meds and a nap.

I feel good and it's very nice to be out here for a few days.

Well, off to the candlelight service!

Our church (back when it was St. Cecelia's) used to have a midnight candlelight mass.  It was always a packed house and you had to get there early to make sure you got a good seat and decent parking.  For some reason, they did away with it.  Now I go to 4:30 PM Christmas mass on Christmas Eve.

The problem with using a mixer is the cream cheese.  It all gets clogged on the beaters.

It calls itself the alternate Yuletide collection, but it's actually a terrific collection of odd holiday songs from the 40's and 50's.  I highly recommend it to all fellow baby boomers.  For next year...

I have returned from a delightful Christmas Eve celebration with DR fjl, Skip Kennon, Skip's agent Pat, her daughter and her daughter's friend. The Kennon-Landaus were terrific hosts, the food and drink were plenty and very delicious, and I'm tipsy. My critics would say I'm drunk but I know I'm not that. I do feel good.

Skip made a fantastic meal: delish roast beef, a wonderful pork, mac 'n' cheese that was extra special, and a fantastic salad. Desserts were a fantabulous apple pie and a chocolate something that I took home for tomorrow's treat I hope I didn't forget something. It was a glorious way to ring in the holiday.

and so to bed!

We still light candles, but this year (at my suggestion, after having seen these at several Bar Mitzvah and/or Mitzvot) we gave the kids little finger lights so that they wouldn't burn themselves on dripping wax.  The kids at the 5 o'clock service were out of their minds with excitement over the lights, which we let them keep.

Tonight, the family went to my parents' house.  We had much food to eat and many presents to open.  We decided to exchange names instead of everyone getting something for everyone.  I got Larry, my sister's boyfriend, and I got him the new Mark Twain autobiography (volume 1); a CD, The Barra MacNeil's Christmas Album II; and some coffee.  My niece got me a couple of pictures...framed album-sized promo posters of The Manhattan Transfer's "Vocalese (http://www.amazon.com/Vocalese-Manhattan-Transfer/dp/B000002II2/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1293260081&sr=1-1)" album and Linda Eder's "Storybook (http://www.amazon.com/Storybook-Linda-Eder/dp/B0000AM6LZ/ref=sr_1_13?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1293259934&sr=1-13)" CD.  They will look great over my piano.  I also got some cash and a Subway gift card from my parents.  And now, I'm home.

LOVELY GREENSLEEVES BY E.T. LERITT

For twenty summers, you’ve lived alone
On a mountain top in your father’s home
For twenty winters, so white and cold
You have longed for love I will give you

Greensleeves, lovely Greensleeves
You're as wild as spring
And your heart is free
Don't wait, run away with me
For my love cannot wait, till tomorrow

I'm just wandering minstrel man
But I'll make you happy as best I can
I'll write song for you every day
And I'll sing your sweet name the verses

Greensleeves, lovely Greensleeves
You're as wild as spring
And your heart is free
Don't wait runaway with me
For my love cannot wait, till tomorrow

The Do is Done and it was grand.  I think we had more people overall than ever before.  So many, in fact, we ran out of chairs and some people were sitting outside by the pool.  It was great fun, and just when it was starting to break up about twelve more people arrived, so the last of them left about fifteen minutes ago and I've started to clean up.  I think the notes will go up late tonight, as I've got to sit down and relax for a few minutes.  So many nice folks, some kids, our very own Mark and Amy and I'll have more of a list later.
