Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with the Christmas spirit, and now it is time for you to post until the Christmas Cows come home.

Mr Allan Sherman's version also included the word Greensleeves.

In one of his combo platters:

Alas, my love, you've done me dirt.
You've sewn greensleeves on my yellow shirt.

She was so excited. Santa left her a note, "Thanks Megan, ho ho ho" and ate her cookie.

I took that to my dad's and watched it last night. Our original Mercer doc writer, Ken Barnes, was involved with this release and does commentary, so he sent us all copies of it. Dad liked the fact that you could watch either the color or black and white version, and he especially loved the firecracker dance!

We got back from Dad's @ 2AM. He's having a pretty tough time because Christmas was always such a big deal in their household. My step-sibs brought me photos of my stepmom so I'll be scanning for the next few days and then hope to put something together for Tuesday.

I was very lucky that Greg was able to go to Blue Ridge with me yesterday; I was so tired that I don't know if I would have made it home but I wanted to leave so I didn't get trapped up there....my mom would not forgive me if I didn't show up for Christmas.

Merry Christmas to all! Greg and I haven't been able to give presents to each other---right now the present is when we both get to be in the same place at the same time.

They downgraded Greg's mom, which is a good thing, and moved her to yet another room where she doesn't need such intensive care. He's down there and I'll be at my mom's but I hope that snow won't keep him form spending Christms evening with us.

Good morning, all! Oy! Did I have weird dreams last night! I now remember little about them except one had to do with Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day, which we had talked about at last night's Christmas Eve dinner, and the other dream involved Tom Jones, his wife Janet Watson, and their sons Sam and Michael. I see the Joneses rarely these days and I do miss them all very much. Then, around 2:30 this morning I believe I was visited by ghosts. This was the second night this week that I've heard footsteps moving around the empty apartment above me, not the heavy tread of the Oaf but quiet steps after the sound of a light switch being turned on, like a circuit breaker.

Several days ago, this was rather unnerving, but last night I was more curious about the whole megillah, sort of like those nights every other month or so for the past 30 years where a spirit clearly moves through the apartment on its way to where and I'm suddenly aware there is more than one presence in the room. I wondered at first if my dad perhaps was checking in, since in the past spirits on Christmas Eve have visited my family.  I remember a Christmas Eve around 35 years ago where my mother saw the ghost of her mother and freaked out over it. She wasn't so much frightened as surprised, and then she spent the rest of the evening weeping over it.

So, enough of the nocturnal ambulations at 202 West 82! Today I plan to open all the cards I've received, looking at photos, waxing nostalgic over distant friends, and checking every envelope thoroughly for any potential checks. My gifts are wrapped for my visit to the home of Ron, Dona and Charlotte Raines around 11:30; all I have to do is tag them. After the do, I may see a movie, although I have plenty to watch here.

Who knows?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas, Everyone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's so true, DR Laura! The problem is, when they visit someone so even-tempered, good-natured, loveable, and charming as I am, there's no place for the story to go.

On a more serious note, this is the latest progress update I can find on the condition of Christopher Tierney after his back surgery:

We had 12 for Christmas Eve supper at my Cousin Debra's.  Suprisingly, her hubby's cousin did NOT make his annual appearance.  Given the number of cars in front of the house, it's little wonder.  Even I was hesitant to go in.

It was a jolly group, however, and supper was pleasant enough.  The bbq chicken was delish, but the ominpresent/ubiquitous/predictable sides of corn, mashed potatoes and bbq gravy/sauce (served with virtually EVERY meal despite the meat course) was a bit of a letdown.  I had hoped for something green...a lettuce leaf...something out of the ordinary...but, alas....

Still, I ate well.

My cousin Butch was there and it was the first time in a VERY long time that he and I connected on a personal level.  There was a time, when we were growing up, that I considered him more a brother than a cousin.  But, we all know how some filial relationships go...

Tonight is the "do" at my aunt's house.  I hope everyone's "do" is happy and fulfilling (or at least filling) today.

We had a beautiful Christmas last night. Lots of fun and laughter. I had ham and a baked potato. It's hard not to eat the entire thing but I just ate the inside (the starch) and not the outside (fiber). Since dairy is an issue we had jello for dessert. That was very nice of them to forgo heavier dessert but we are going to Anthony's uncle and aunt for dinner today where they will have real dessert.

I got much more than I asked for present-wise. I got the high end Sony e-reader Daily Edition with a touch screen, wi-fi and 3G access. I was very surprised when I opened the package. I expected an e-reader but not this one. They are extraordinarily generous.

Anthony got a 16 gigabyte Sony Walkman (we're keeping Sony in business I guess). He is also very happy about that. He can take his eclectic music with him wherever he goes!

Mr. Bruce Kimmel has just appeared on BBC Tees via the Broadway Christmas Album. The host, my friend Alex Hall, just played Be A Santa! Bruce, you're international.

Alex is a dear woman and this week's show (which is called Songs from the Shows) is full of musical theatre songs which are Christmas-focused. I helped her fill out the track list with a few of my own choices ranging from the obscure to the well-known.

I actually had almost no presents to open - I never have many - gone are the days when vendors would send gifts to their best clients - in the Varese years I got great stuff - now, nothing.  In fact, I got a nice bouquet from the Pogue's and the Haverty's always bring something that you have to open.  But I don't care about that stuff - I care about the wonderful people who were here and the wonderful, generous, gentle souls that bless my life, that's what I care about.

So can any of our chefs tell me if it is Ok for the very expensive cut of beef  that has been marinating in a red wine/beef broth marinade to  continue marinating another 24 hours before I cook it?

I suggest that you just drink that marinade and go to bed!

DR vixmom - You have two options here.

1) You can take it out of the marinade, and place it in a pan/ziploc bag/etc. until you're ready to cook it.

Or if you want to get more of the "busy work" out of the way, you could...

2) Cook it now, then let it cool, refrigerate it. Then slice and serve later. Some cuts of beef work well when served cold or at room temperature.

What cut of beef is it?  -Is there any other sort of acid in the marinade besides the red wine? lemon juice? vinegar?

Here are the original lyrics to my favorite Christmas song.

Boy are they a downer.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last,
Next year we may all be living in the past

Have yourself a merry little Christmas, pop that champagne cork,
Next year we will all be living in New York.

No good times like the olden days, happy golden days of yore,
Faithful friends who were dear to us, will be near to us no more.

But at least we all will be together, if the Fates allow,
From now on we'll have to muddle through somehow.

So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

So the forecast looks like it has shifted again.  It looks like snow for a good chunk of the Eastern seaboard this weekend.  Not a blizzard, but not a total bust either.

It is a boneless prime rib

I mixed red wine, beef stock, and some garlic, kosher salt, black pepper -

it is in a ziplock bagwith all the extra air squeezed out standing upright in a small bowl so that the entire piece is immersed in the marinade

24 hours is usually the limit, so... You don't want to run the risk of over-marinating and over-tenderizing the meat.

My instinct would be to drain the excess marinade, then reseal the bag and place it back in the fridge until you're ready to cook it.

My wife and I watched HOLIDAY INN on DVD last night.

I hadn't seen it in many years.

I love watching Astaire dance.

I took that to my dad's and watched it last night. Our original Mercer doc writer, Ken Barnes, was involved with this release and does commentary, so he sent us all copies of it. Dad liked the fact that you could watch either the color or black and white version, and he especially loved the firecracker dance!

We watched the interview that Barnes did with Astaire's daughter.

Since she was never mentioned, I got the distinct impression that the daughter and Astaire's widow are not the best of friends.

Merry Christmas everyone.  I got to stay home this morning from church, first time in a LOT of years.  The DP and I had our lovely Christmas gift exchange (someone got someone an iPad and that someone wasn't me)  and in an hour or so, we'll be off to my Mom's for brunch.  Later on, we'll come home and prepare dinner for 2 of my best friends, I think it will be a swell gathering and we're very excited as one of the friends has yet to see the house.

And God Bless Us, Everyone!

I think the conflicting stories about Christopher Tierney's condition are a bit strange.  Of course they do get you up and moving in the hospital as soon as possible and just because they get you on your feet and moving, it doesn't mean you aren't still seriously injured.  Still, they are quite different.

Mark and I had a splendid time last night! Thanks again, Bruce, for inviting us. Everything was very yummilicous. Everyone commented on how the spaghetti sauce had a sweetness to it, but Bruce wouldn't tell us what the secret ingredient was. The tuna pasta salad definitely lived up to its reputation. I had three helpings and I ate and ate, and just when I thought I could eat no more (because I might throw up on the ground), I ate some peanut brittle. Mark had a couple helpings too, which was truly eventful because he's allergic to mayonaise. But this is special magic tuna pasta salad because Mark didn't have an allergic reaction to it. I'm embarrased to say that as an old Jew I didn't recognize the noodle kugel, but it was delicious even though I didn't know what to call it.

The conversation was fascinating - loved hearing old stories about Gloria Swanson and Elaine Stritch. We also learned that Bruce could make a small child laugh hysterically just by repeating "Mummy" in a British accent over and over again. But I was horrified to learn that Bruce has never seen the classic 1947 film, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." And I thought Bruce had seen every movie known to man. Now I am not a big fan of old black and white movies at all, but I absolutely love this film. It's delightful and charming, and Bruce, you must see it!

After BK watches the film, he can watch the TV series, and then I can send him the truly bizarre letters from Lois Kibbee to Frances Farmer where she talks on and on about Charles Nelson Reilly.  ;)

Actually, Amy, you must have heard wrong because Bruce has seen The Ghost and Mrs. Muir about fifty times and owned it in 16mm and now on DVD, and helped facilitate the score's CD release on Varese.  I love the film and I love Gene Tierney.

My neighbor and friend Ellen (who was here last night with beautiful daughter Casey and her husband Colin) called me this morning and asked if I'd come over and join them for breakfast.  I didn't want to eat, but I went over and sat and we chatted and it was grand fun.  I'm home again, and will see if there's something I want to watch on Blu and Ray or some other format.  And I'm still undecided about the Cissy Wechter Christmas party - really on the fence about it.

BK, I think you should go to the party. This is a party season and I want you to be with friends and have a good time.

I had a great day at the Raines apartment. They had their usual assortment of wonderful and fascinating friends:
Simon Jones, one of my favorite British actors and his lovely wife Nancy who was the PR person for years for "Monty Python"
The head of the Opera Dept at Manhattan School of Music whose name I forget!
Alan Oke, who's currently singing in the Met's production of "The Magic Flute"
Director John Margulis and his wife Judy Montgomery, of the Metropolitan Opera
    Actor Lewis Stadlen
    Sandy Sindel, my attorney
Amy Danis and her husband Mark Johannes, producers of the current revival of "The Fantasticks"
    Critic Howard Kissel
There were a few others who did not stay long. I stayed till the bitter end, and Sandy Sindel asnd I were the last to leave after gifts were opened. It was a fantastic day.

I listened to an interview with Ms Suzanne Pleshette on you Tube today.......one thing she said was that she had a 2-picture a year deal at Warners and Troy and Connie and Bobby Conrad were under contract - so she herself was making much more money than a contract player.

She said she was the breadwinner in the family when she married Troy.  Then she said that after they had been married for awhile, Troy told her that he was several hundred thousand dollars in debt, and that he wanted to split because under California laws, if they signed a joint income tax form or something of the like....community property would make her LIBEL for all of his debts - and he didn't want to do that to her.  She said, that was very nice of him.

Little Known Facts:

If you are watching a Universal Film or television show from 1948-2000 and see the name of the script supervisor, it will probably be Betty Abbott/Griffin.

Betty Abbott is the daughter of Bud Abbott.  Betty was born in Greencastle Indiana (Home of the Putnam County Playhouse) - but I have never heard any stories about why or how that happened....back in 1924.

Ahhhhhhhhh.......Betty was adopted.    Greencastle must have been her home town.

My brother Don and his daughter have come and gone. They wanted to beat the snow which has really started to come down. They were driving into it on their way to Richmond, hopefully, they'll stay ahead of it on the way back up to Fairfax. Thankfully, my brother has a car with 4-wheel drive. Otherwise...

Food was eaten. Pictures were taken. Candles were blown out - we also celebrated the birthday of my niece, Alexandra - she was/is a Christmas Eve baby.

We've had company coming and going here since noon.

So showing up in top music moments of the year is Cee-Lo Green substituting FOX NEWS for his title (F*** YOU) .  Have we posted this clip already?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJlOVNPikKA

BEWARE!  SOME EXPLICIT LANGUAGE AT THE LINK, BUT NO MORE EXPLICIT THAN "SPRING AWAKENING"

The New York Times discusses the "F**K YOU / FORGET YOU" issue in their list of 2010's ten best singles:

"if you’re talking about the best singles of 2010, you’re inevitably going to talk about a retro-soul ditty by Cee Lo Green known to “Glee” fans and Grammy voters as “Forget You,” but whose uncensored title is a tried-and-true profanity. “That’s its shock value, its amusement value, but also its syllabic-percussive value,” Jon Pareles, the chief pop critic, says of the unbowdlerized title.

Nate Chinen has no time at all for the cleaned-up version. “The sentiment is as plain as can be, and ‘Forget You’ is just not the same sentiment,” he says. “‘Forget You’ doesn’t work at all — not when Gwyneth Paltrow sings it, not when Cee Lo sings it. It’s fundamentally a different song.” "

Larry, the ghosts are always around us...

I am happy to hear that you had a lovely visit with the Raines'

The father of one my classmates at Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School was part of the security/stage management staff at the now-demolished Capital Centre in Landover, MD, and he would occasionally treat his son and some of his classmates to concerts there.

"The Boss" played there on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during his "Born in the U.S.A." tour. We - myself and about 15 of my classmates - went to all four nights.  Needless to say, that was quite a "tired" and unproductive week at DJO.

But I was sitting on the floor behind you, so I couldn't see that well. I do remember the television show too, although as a 5-year old I would get it confused with "My Mother the Car."

It is probably a bit late in the evening to ask (at least for the East Coast crowd), has anyone ever heard of the opera singer Frances Yeend?

Frances was one of my mother's lifetime friends.  They met in college at Washingiton State University (then College).  I was just researching her online, and I was sorry to see that she passed away in 2008.  I kick myself that I never contacted her after my mother was killed.  Sometimes we forget that we have the ultimate missing persons bureau in our own computer.  I wish I had written to her.

Earlier today, I sent out my Christmas e-mail to a great many friends both near and far.  Later, I was wondering why I didn't post it here on HHW.  It certainly applies to all of you at this site.

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS

AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EACH

AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.

YOU HAVE MADE MY LIFE RICHER

AND HAPPIER BY BEING IN  IT!

IF I HAVE NEVER TOLD YOU I LOVE

YOU, THEN PERHAPS IT IS TIME.

I love you!

G'night!

Back from a marvelously marvelous partay - really glad I went.  The food was amazing and I sort of didn't overeat, which was grand.  Nice folks, and I met the really nice man Cissy is dating now, and his equally nice and lovely daughter.  Always great to see my pal David and wife Barbara and two kids Zach and Daniel.  Daniel's just been cast in Bye Bye Birdie in his high school, playing Harvey Johnson, and his director is an old pal o' mine, Alan Hunt.

Merry Christmas to all! Greg and I haven't been able to give presents to each other---right now the present is when we both get to be in the same place at the same time.

They downgraded Greg's mom, which is a good thing, and moved her to yet another room where she doesn't need such intensive care. He's down there and I'll be at my mom's but I hope that snow won't keep him form spending Christmas evening with us.

Vixdad's Mum has been rushed to the hospital - she has been in the emergency room for the past 72 hours due to hospital overcrowding -  apparently there is  virus going around that is hitting the elderly population quite hard -

we have been relying on Vixdad's sister for info

Today, the family just got together at my sister's house and we ate and played a game of Phase 10 and two games of Scrabble.  I didn't win any game. ::)

I'm still not hungry after the not-a-lot of eating today.
