Title: THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Post by: bk on December 30, 2010, 12:12:59 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes seemed like a year, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're reviewing their year and the one thing they've ascertained is that they did not come home.

Good morning, all! I slept terribly, given all of this angst over the payment I've been awaiting. I did hear from the McGlinn executor this morning, and I gather the check has been lost in the proverbial mail since it was posted around Dec 19 and never reached me. So, the big problem is, how do I cope with it today? Of course there are other terrible things to cope with as well, such as an email concerning me sent to the LoC "producer" who drove me completely over the edge on LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40, someone I hope never to deal with again, or the fact that I dragged myself to Toyland yesterday and waited for two hours for a colleague who never showed. At the moment I am rather unhappy and discontent about most aspects of my existence. That will change with the mood swings, but today I am certainly in a kick-ass mood this morning. That said, I am really happy that DR TCB regained his lost funds and I'm very happy to have both DRs Danise and Dakotacelt with us this week.

So, I've got a morning on the McGlinnventory, closing up the estate and pulling orders for customers of sold items. We didn't do as well as I hoped, but I think the executor asked us to price things too highly. After that, edits at Toyland. With the way my luck is going, the check will arrive today after I've told him to stop payment and send another!

OK, so I'm sitting here in the family room, which is at the back of the house.  About 20 minutes ago, the house kind of "shuddered" and I heard the jingle bells that are hanging on the inside of the front door (3 rooms away).  Now posts are showing up on Facebook and Twitter suggesting that we may have had an earthquake.

TOD:

I've yet to see several of the major Oscar contenders (e.g. BLACK SWAN, THE FIGHTER, THE KING'S SPEECH), but although I've seen some very good performances, I don't recall any that really blew me away.

A couple that I recall were Annette Benning in MOTHER AND CHILD (a much more complex role for her than THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT) and Alan Arkin in CITY ISLAND.  I also liked Frank Langella in WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS, Edward Norton in LEAVES OF GRASS and Jeremy Renner in THE TOWN.

Then after dinner. Not so OK. But not as bad as it was the previous day.

I would say that one of my favorite performances of 2011 is Parvesh Cheena playing Gupta on the new sitcom OUTSOURCED. He is a wonderful find and a fantastic comedian.

He has been a member of a couple of different improv groups in Chicago (where he is from) and in LA. I hope that next time I get to LA I can see him perform.

Post by: Ron Pulliam on December 30, 2010, 08:28:51 AM
The trip back on Tuesday was fraught -- yes, I said fraught -- with angst and exasperation!!!!!

Got to the airport in good time.  I thought things would go well all day.

Oy!

My flight's boarding was "delayed" for maintenance.  Supposed to be a 20-minute delay.

Thirty-five minutes later, we were called to start boarding.  As is the custom, anyone needing "special" assistance boarding (wheelchairs, crutches, folks with young children) were called to start things off.  A woman with five young girls went to the gate.  It seems she hadn't checked them in yet.  No boarding passes save from their connecting flight.  Said woman with five girls had been in the terminal a full 30 minutes, had not been booked for this particular flight but, because of the delay, was referred to the flight to continue her travels.  What possessed her to wait until boarding is the mystery as the same person at the gate was earlier at a desk checking people (but no, not the woman with girls) in.  No, this woman, for whatever reasons, decided that all of her business should be done when the flight was to be boarded.  This checking-in took 10 minutes as we all stood there.  We had one Delta rep for this flight and she had her hands full.

Once we boarded, we sat like so much fish for 10 minutes waiting for clearance to move toward a runway.  We were in luck, the pilot announced.  We were third in line.  Yes, third in line for "that" runway.  There were only three flights going out at that time.  Why it took another 25 minutes for our flight to take off is beyond mystery to me.

Why all the angst, you ask?  I booked my connection to San Francisco with the expectation that, as always, the flight from Columbia would arrive "early".  And, I'd given myself only an hour to connect to that San Francisco flight.  My connecting flight was scheduled to depart at 11 a.m.

Sigh.  We arrived at 10:20 but didn't get to the gate until 10:35 a.m.  And it wasn't a gate, per se...it was a ladder we walked down, followed a path on the tarmac and then entered the terminal.

I was at Atlanta's Concourse D...and my connecting flight was at Concourse B.  Anyone knowing the Atlanta airport will understand the time/effort it would take to make my connecting flight.  Of course we were at the far end of the terminal.  I raced, I tell you -- RACED -- down the middle of that concourse for all I was worth.  I HAD to make that flight.  I got to the middle of the concourse and approached the escalator.  I raced down that behind a woman on a similar mission.  The lucky thing is that the shuttle train was there and I dashed on board seconds before the door closed.

Getting to Concourse B was rapid, thankfully...but it still felt like an eternity.

I was the first one off the train...and I raced to the escalator and ran up it, announcing to folks ahead of me that I was coming through! The gate I needed was at the middle of one arm of the concourse.  I ran, breathless.  I'm sure it wasn't pretty at all.

What did I find when I got there?  Had they closed the gate?  Was I too late?  Had my seat been given to someone on standby?  Would I be able to get another flight without waiting hours?

As it turned out, my flight was boarding.  I was panting as I got in line (there were hundreds waiting to board, but I was in line for a Zone that had just been called).  Happily, I got to my seat and was able to take some deep breaths and cool down a bit before sitting.  From then on, the trip was fine...including some of the most outstanding first class service it has been my privilege to experience!!!

Getting home from the airport was easy-peasy.  When I got home, however, I was met iwth a rude surprise:  The elevator wasn't working.  Bloody Hades!  I took stairs to my 4th floor condo with just my carry-on and unlocked my door.  I then went back downstaris to get the rest.  I began lugging the rolling suitcase up the stairs with a second bag slung over my back.  I did three -- count 'em -- three flights like that.  And then what do you think???!!!???  On the third floor, the elevator doors open and a woman with two kids in tow stepped out.  Miraculously, the elevator responded to her call from the garage.  I got on and rode the single flight to the fourth floor.

I methodically began my unpacking which went very well.  I began thinking about sending e-mails out and reporting my arrival here at HHW.  I turned on the computer and continued my unpacking.  About 30 minutes later, I was aware that my computer screen was blank...usually, I get a little computer tone alerting me to log in.  I told the computer to wake up...but the monitor kept going back to sleep.

What the hell?

As I was reviewing the situation, I noticed the power light was off on the hard drive.  "Oh, rats!" I thought.  "I didn't press the power button down."  I then did so.  Nothing happened.  I checked the connections.  All was well.

The rest was simply a series of re-visits to the scene...trying the same things over and over...not wanting to believe I'd need to get repairs...not wanting to think about buying a new compter.  I decided I'd sleep on it and figure things out "tomorrow" because, after all, "tomorrow is another day." I was so tired...I'd gotten home at 3 p.m., and I went to bed at 7:35 p.m.

Yesterday, I woke up at 4:30 a.m.  Still on east coast time, naturally.  I dressed, had coffee and then drove in to my office where I collected much mail, packages from co-workers, and a few nice things from Amazon.com that I had ordered for myself.  Among these things was a Verilux reading lamp, a new telephone with handset exension, a new electric razor, and an HP printer/scanner/fax machine (that I was afraid I'd regret having bought owing to my computer situation).  NExt, I took clothing to the cleaners and returned home.  I opened mail and packages, and I oohed and aahed over stuff, including a very thoughtful copy of "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" from a truly wonderful person.

Next, I assembled the new reading lamp.  Then I set up the new telephone.  Then I sussed out the instructions for the new razor and set it in its charger unit.

I ate two roast beast sammiches my mom had made for me to  take on my flight (she made four total and I'll have the other two today).  I watched a couple of shows on my DVR.

And then I stewed and fretted and re-thought out the hard drive situation.  I decided to call Bryan, my tech friend at work, to ask for a referral.  He knows all the right places to find stuff and get stuff fixed that are computer-related (since he does that for the County).  Bryan asked some questions to verify I had thought of everything that might be wrong...and he was satisfied that I waited longer than necessary to call him.  Obviously, the hard drive isn't getting power when the power source is viable...so it must be the power box inside the hard drive.

He told me to take my unit to Best Buy's "Geek Squad".  So, I did.

Long story much shorter now..."Geek Squad" guy gave the hard drive the once-over, determined that it was indeed power-"less"...and told me a number of things they could do (diagnostics and then calling me to tell me what was wrong and how much it would cost), but then recommended that replacing the power box would  likely be the best solution and that I could do that myself.  Cost: $59.

I was skeptical...yes, and more...but he told me I should let the existing connections be my guide to making the new connections.  Just do one thing at a time, starting with taking out the old box and installing the new.  The connections would make sense once I started.

The drive home was fraught with a lot of thoughts about whether the "Geek Squad" guy was right...and whether I'd be able to make sense of the situations.

I got home at 3 p.m.  I set up a work area and removed the cover from the hard drive.  I opened the box of the new power unit.  Hmmmmmm.  I reached for the instructions...and was shocked that there were no illustrations...no step-by-step instructions.  Not even a schematic.  It was specs and nothing more.

Well, I thought, I could always take it back and let them do it if I couldn't.

At 3:35 p.m., my last connection was made and I plugged it in.

Ecstasy!

And that is my last two days.

Saw it a few weeks ago on DVD. It's historically a bit of a mishmash, there are lazy CGI effects and quite a bit of violence and gore with only a little sex. And I couldn't stop watching it. Saw all 8 hours or so in a day.

I'm back from the doctor and all is well in Chelsea, NY. I can eat real food again. I had a banana and we will have turkey and a salad and a baked potato for dinner. We will also go out for New Year's Eve dinner tomorrow.

I see the doctor again on January 7th to go over my blood work and my colonoscopy from last year and we will also set a date for the appendectomy, probably in February.

That's it for now.

Regarding BK's notes:  I think one of the exciting parts of finally reading, "THERE'S MEL..." was that every day you kept us up to date while you were writing the book.  Even so, I had no idea how terrific that book would turn out to be.  Bruce, you deserve every bit of praise that you receive for 'THERE'S MEL......"

Has anybody here seen the series Pillars of Earth?  It is starting here next week. And I think I've heard good things about it but not sure if it would be for me.

I read the book and saw the series.  I enjoyed both--but I tend to really enjoy those type of stories.  I believe there was a 2nd book set some years after the first but I've never gotten around to finding it or reading it.

Our DR  Ron Pilliam had quite the adventure.  I know what you mean about the airport in Atlanta.  I think they arrange things so your flight is always on the other side of the darn place.  I remember running for a connecting flight coming home from one of the NY trips myself.

I vowed that I would do my best to make any connecting flights at some other airport even if it made me a few hours late to where I was going.

I spent today working around the house.  The boss (myself) was real nice and allowed me to have many breaks.  ;)

I am somewhat worried about my central heat/air.   When I woke this morning, I thought it was kinda cold.  A check of the thermostat said it was 62 degrees but I had it set at 67.  I tried to turn it up to 70 to see if it felt any warmer but after about an hour the temp hadn't changed.  If anything, the air that was blowing felt cold so I turned it off.

It warmed up today to the high 60's outside and the house felt ok but I'm worried about tonight.

Had a fun afternoon doing errands that took longer than expected because I kept running into people I knew and hadn't seen for a long time.  At Bed, Bath & Beyond I saw a former Miami University co-worker who's still working at the campus.  At Kroger I chatted with a friend of our niece Jennifer and with our friend Sam who had 3 cardiac stents put in 2 months after I had my 1.  The grocery was busy, busy, busy and there's not even a snowstorm predicted.  You don't suppose people are trying to stock up in case there's a BIG earthquake?

Thanks for heating vibes, DR Jane.   The problem is, I'm not 100% sure that is a problem.  I'm still not used to having Central heat and air so I'm not sure how it works.

It's warm now-- 68 degrees so I don't have it on.  Overnight the weatherman said it will go down in the upper 50's by morning so I am going to put it on when I go to bed and set it to 67 again.  We'll just have to see what happens.

I don't think mine works with a timer.    It's just heat/cool  auto/fan and a button to set the target temp. up or down.

And 17 degrees is way, way, way, way (that's FOUR) to cold for a hot house flower like me!

DR Danise, make sure the the switch has been moved from "cool" to "heat"  if not your furnace won't kick on. your fan should be set to "auto" unless you want it to run all the time, then you set it to "on".   And if you have a programable thermostat, make sure you put it on the temperature you want and hit hold.  That should do for now.

Had a lovelier than lovely lunch with dear reader Jeanne at Hugo's, which contained this classic Jeanne moment:  Jeff Goldblum is walking from his table to the front door, saying hi to several people as he does.  I say, "Oh, there's Jeff Goldblum."  Jeanne looks around, doesn't really know WHERE to look despite the very tall and distinctive Mr. Goldblum, finally focuses on him and then turns back to me and utters this classic - "I don't know who he is."

Also 67 degrees is pretty cold for a hot house flower.  You won't need the heat too often down there, you may want to try setting it in the 70s just to see if it's working

Perhaps the central heating was set for p.m. when it should be a.m.?
I don't think mine works with a timer.    It's just heat/cool  auto/fan and a button to set the target temp. up or down.

And 17 degrees is way, way, way, way (that's FOUR) to cold for a hot house flower like me!

How in the heck are you ever going to see snow, if you continue to be a hot house flower?
Thru the window, of course!  ;)

You should send that to Reader's Digest!

Callie has a funny bump on her lip that I think has grown a little.  She doesn't seem to mind it a bit.  I set a vet appointment for her on Monday.  Boo is going along to get a microchip.  Then all the cats will be chipped.  I will feel much better about that

Vibes for Callie & excellent idea for Boo.

Ricky came with a chip from the shelter. They insist on it.  The next one to go to the vet was Callie, so I got her a chip.  Boo doesn't have one yet because there hasn't been a reason to go to the vet since I started doing this.  So I told them she's coming with us on Monday so I can do both of them in one visit.

They estimate something like 80% of lost animals with chips are reunited with owners.  Of course they are the people selling the chips, but seeing how it works at the vet, it's really amazingly easy for them to scan an animal and read the chip number.  I've registered the other two and will pay to register Boo too

I didn't get to tell you all about the poor turtle I found a few months back.

I was driving home and saw what I thought was gopher turtle (endangered species) trying to cross the road.  I turned the car around to go back to get him/her.  I was going to take it to a local park where it would be safe.  In just that little bit of time someone hit him/her.  It crushed the whole back side of the shell but it was alive and in pain.

I rushed him/her to a local emergency animal clinic and even the gal at the front desk said there aren't to many of them left in these parts.  They were very happy that I at least brought him/her in so they could try to help it.

I called the next day to check on him/her but they wouldn't tell me anything.   At least  I know if they couldn't help he/she didn't suffer.

I'm not too concerned about Callie right now.  I've done some research that leads me to believe this is common in cats and probably not a big deal, but I'm going to get it checked as there are a number of mouth cancers common in cats and if it's something serious I want to catch it as soon as possible

Sheena was watching TV on the love seat while I cooking my dinner.   She must not have liked what she was watching because I heard the channel change.   When I came back into the living room she had the remote between her paws.  I wish I had my camera ready to take that photo--that was cute.

I see the doctor at 11am today. I assume I will get permission to stop the low-residue diet. I have one more day of antibiotics and then I'm off the pills. Everything is proceeding normally and I'm looking forward to the verdict from the doctor.

I hope you got the news you wanted to hear...

I have enjoyed watching him. He is a hoot!

That is good news Ben!

Goldblum, finally focuses on him and then turns back to me and utters this classic - "I don't know who he is

:-)

Yes, we're getting it. Right now only precdicting about 5 inches of snow and wind.   The higher snow amounts are very nearby and ice instead of snow is nearby on the other side, so it could be much different than predicted if it moves just a little bit

Glad to see you posting.  I was sincerely hoping that you weren't on I-94

I think I mentioned earlier this week when we were discussing theatre, that my most fun of 2010 was seeing BRAINEX Indiana style with MR BK, DR CP, EVIL KURT, and then partying with the cast afterwards.

Not a highlight but THE highlight of my year.....unless something pretty darn spectacular happens tomorrow.

Last Thursday evening of 2010.....hard to believe.

Last night I watched THE LAVENDER HILL MOB which I had never seen.....and had in fact avoided.  It was a most enjoyable and delightful movie.  Now I want to see it again!
Wouldn't mind watching that one again myself.

Oy, oy, oy, treacherous driving to and from my gig tonight.  Portlanders are awful in snow, but they usually do better in ice, but not tonight.  On the way there there was some kind of accident off to the right with a line of police cars, but at least the roads weren't too icy.  Coming back it was 28, and on the way I saw one car on its side, plus the pickup in front of me starting fishtailing wildly and momentarily went into oncoming traffic, and OF COURSE the person in back of me wants to tailgate.  I can't stand people sometimes.  ;)

I was awakened at 12:15am by footsteps and heavy thuds coming from the apartment above me and I knew it was no ghost. I put on my robe and made a trip to the 4t floor to find 6 young men and women between the ages of 19 and 25 checking out the apartment. At 12:15 AM?

So, I just sent the landlord an email asking WTF? I think the young Russian(?) blonde is my new neighbor. Shoot me.

Just finished watching a 1978 exploitation film titled HI RIDERS which starred Darby Hinton.

One of the two lead actresses was an appealing gal name of Karen Fredrik. A bit of internet searching reveals that Karen Fredrik (now Karen Fredrik Gardner) is a Facebook friend of our very own BK!

Who knew?

BK, how is it that you know Karen Fredrik?

And can you please ask her why she stopped acting? She was really quite good in this movie and so very cute (almost as cute as the guy who played opposite her)

Whew!

See y'all in the morning!
