Well, you've read the notes, the notes were so 2011, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they assure me they're definitely coming home in 2011.

I just amazed myself.  I clicked on "Calendar" and got an error message saying Invalid something or other.  Instead of panic, I went into the admin panel, found the button for calendar and saw that for some weird reason the calendar had started in 2004 but had a maximum date of 2010.  I changed that to 2015, clicked save settings, and voila - calendar is back.  Go me.

Good morning, all! I hope everyone has safely returned from all parties and New Year's Eve excursions. I slept quite well, although my last dream was peculiar, something to do with packing and shipping cartons and my cousin Judy, whom I've not seen in 40 years.

I have a quiet morning here, mostly puttering about and tidying up, and a few things to write about a number titled "My Russian Girlski" from THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER. Around 1 I will head down to Toyland for a meeting at 2. I have no plans for tonight, and I may end up watching the second act of Balanchine's NUTCRACKER.

For 2011, I'd like to see that property in Ohio sell and the money invested for some financial security; December was a horrible month of cash flow and frustration and I'm too old to want to see this continue.

He looks so scared of her all the time. I guess it's the live tv thing. I wonder how he would be with her if he wasn't always so concerned that she would say something that she's not allowed to say.

Good 2011 morning all!

It took some time but I finely got the dogs out from under the bed.  Toby was a small quivering mass and if Sheena could have crawled into my skin, I think she would have.

As for the topic of the day, I have many wishes but I guess that if things would just stay as they are--I keep my job and home, I'll be happy.

In a perfect world, I'd win the lotto, quit work and help my friends and as many animals as I could.  Good health would abound to everyone I know and there really would be peace on earth.

Vixdad and I went to a suprise birthday party for my brother.  He turned 50 on Christmas day.

My sister in law arranged to have her parents host a party.
He thought he was attending a small New Years Eve party with just his inlaws

He really was suprised -everyone who attended had spoken to him within the past few days and discussed their plans for NewYears - going out to dinner - the movies - a house party- etc - one of the attendees even asked my brother to come over to HIS house, which offer my brother regretfully declined as he was committed to a quiet dinner parties with his inlaws!

My sisterinlaw also arranged for a singing telegram - which for some reason was delivered by a gorilla ina pink tutu (witha  rather nice singing voice)

She had asked us for stories about his childhood, youth etc and funny little facts and stories wre worked into the song - it was very funny and a great success

We will be going to Staples to see if they have covers for e-readers. I'm surprised it's so difficult to get one. The official Sony cover for my specific e-reader is sold out at Best Buy and at many places on line. They are also far too expensive. I just want a cover since it is a piece of electronic equipment. I want to protect it from bumps and scratches. I will also look for those protective sheet covers (it's a touch screen). Anthony will also look for a case for his walkman.

That's our day. It's supposed to be around 50 degrees today. More and more snow is melting. By Monday when I return to work we will have a mess of slush but that's winter and I can live with it.

In other news...

I spent the first couple of (waking) hours of 2011 taking care of some long overdue cleaning and organizing.  Not everything is done, but I am sort of amazed what I was able to to get done last night before I went to bed, as well as over the past four hours or so.

It's very nice starting off the 2011 with a bit of Progress. :)

I'll give that a try. We had no luck at Best Buy on 14th Street or P.C. Richard. If I don't find one in the city we will look on Long Island over MLK Holiday.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I just read this over on Stephen Hough's blog (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/culture/author/stephenhough/). Stephen is a concert pianist, author, blogger, and quite a wonderful chap overall. And I not only had the pleasure of hearing him in recital, but also meeting and dining with him last year (a.k.a. 2010 ;)).

Here is his New Year's Day post:

Quote
The New Year has traditionally been a time for new beginnings, specifically for making resolutions to improve ourselves.  Just the thought of trying to do this plunges me into discouragement and depression.  Not that there’s nothing to change, but deciding to do something is so often like fighting fire with a can of gasoline.  We more often need to un-do things … to let go of things … to forget things, including our many mistakes of the past year.

Anthony de Mello, an Indian Jesuit priest with an interest in Eastern philosophy and religion, once wrote a meditation which stuck in my mind.  I think it has Zen origins, and pictures a man sitting on a riverbank with boats constantly floating past.  Some of them please him, some are repugnant and disturbing.  “Let them all go past and calmly keep your eyes on the river”, he advises.

2010 was a large, 365-day boat which has now passed by, and 2011 is just coming into view.  Perhaps if we look at the water as our first point of focus in these cold, dark weeks our year will remain ‘new’ and happy until it too slides out of focus into the next Happy New Year.

May All of Us keep our eyes on the River in 2011.

In other news...

One of the reasons I was hoping to get back up here to NYC a little earlier this week - as well as one of the reasons I decided to stay down in Richmond for an extra day or two - is that I'll be sailing on the Queen Mary 2 next week. A friend of mine was hired to play for a "voice camp at sea". Alas, due to some scheduling snafus, he handed the gig off to me.

There will be eight students on board. I will be accompanying the lessons, as well as running my own repertoire coachings.  Most of the students have selected some musical theatre repertoire, but they're also singing some classical selections, art songs and arias.  The musical theatre stuff, I'm not too worried about, however, I was hoping to have a bit more lead time to brush up on my Italian, German and French diction and translations. Thankfully, most of the students had sent me their repertoire lists, and I was able to track down most of the rep either in my own iTunes library and via YouTube just to get them back in my ear.  I'll spend a couple of hours tomorrow going back through my song literature text books and CD liner notes.

Alas, there was a report of a small outbreak of the novovirus on the current sailing of the QM2 - which, from all of the literature I've been reading, seems to be a "common occurrence" during the winter months. When I started to feel a bit iffy last week, I didn't want to risk possible getting "iffier" due to an overnight ride on a crowded bus. I do not want to spend the first two days of the cruise in quarantine.

We set sail from the Port of Brooklyn(!) on Monday afternoon. We'll be at sea for the first three days, and then there will be four ports of call in the Caribbean, and then two days at sea for the trip back to NYC.  I'll be working about six hours a day - four hours of coachings in the morning, then two hours of masterclasses in the evening. The schedule applies even to port days, but at least there's a good six hour window to leave the ship and do some exploring - or, at the very least, find the nearest Starbucks to take advantage of the free WiFi.  -The WiFi on the ship - at $.75/minute(!), alas, is not part of my compensation - which, is basically my own state room and meals.

The voice teacher will be presenting a small recital during the cruise, and, on the final night of the cruise, the students will also present one. -Which is essentially how the voice teacher is "paying" for the cruise.

When we arrive back in NYC, all Three Queens - the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Victoria and the Queen Elizabeth - will be in New York Harbor.  There's supposed to be fireworks. :)

I think we all stayed up late and are tired.

Not having stayed up late I should be rested, however I woke up at 2:00am and couldn't get back to sleep for several hours.

I thought about all that didn't go well in 2010 I hope will change for the better in 2011.  Mostly I want Craig to get a job that makes him happy and meet a nice gal who is also embraces a vegan lifestyle.  Second I want my shoulder to stop hurting & to be in better shape.

Then I thought of all the good in my life.  I am lucky that I like my children and think they make the world a better place.  I'm lucky after all these years Keith and I are still happy with each other.   To express his love for me he joined Sherlock and me on our hike.

We got a nice cover for our Nook and now it looks like a book.  It is funny to see a plug in a book when it needs charging.

Yes, we are, DR Jane.  She and I have watched bowl games all day today while our guys have tolerated the fact that we're monopolizing the TV and the family room.  Of course, the other 364 days of the year, we both sit through a lot of TV programs, DVDs, and movies in theaters that we wouldn't choose to see on our own.  But, overall, we both have a lot in common with our significant others and that makes all the difference.

Actually, I plan on reading The Metropolis Case (http://www.amazon.com/Metropolis-Case-Novel-Matthew-Gallaway/dp/0307463427/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293923520&sr=8-1) by Matthew Gallaway. Matthew is a fellow Twitterer, as well as a blogger. He's also an almost-neighbor. :)

-And he and his debut novel just got a great a review in the New York Times, among other places!

*DR elmore - I believe you might end up liking this book. The operatic reference in the title is not coincidental, and it also takes places in various eras of New York City and Paris.

I went to Gelson's and got the few ingredients I needed for the wacky noodles, which I'm now whipping up.  I don't really think more than five people are coming over - normally I make a pound of noodles, and I think that's probably enough for five, yes?  Or should I make two pounds?  Can't really "save" leftovers.

Congrats, Jose!  Hope you have a great trip!

Perhaps you can read something on your trip

Thanks for the tip, DR Jose! I'll look it up on Amazon.com and make a decision.

I think I'll make another pass at Gaskell's WIVES & DAUGHTERS again tonight.

Heads-up for those with new e-readers:  Richard and I have experienced this phenomenon, both together and separately.  Whenever we're using our Kindles in public, someone always wants to talk to us about them.  I suspect that will subside as more and more people get them, but for now there are a lot of questions.

But so far I have gone swimming once a week. And I am going to to Just Dance on Wii once a week. And I guess I will try to do a few minutes of hooping/stationary bike a few times a week.

Yes, Cilla, the majority of the books are from Gutenberg. There are lots of old books that I either never read or didn't want to read years ago and now that they are available on Gutenberg I thought I would give them a shot. Les Mis, The Picture of Dorian Grey, My Man Jeeves and lots of other goodies. I download them in e-pub format and transfer them to the Reader and away I go.

That's what I plan to do. Just haven't had a chance.

I wonder if I can get "Silver Blade" downloaded.  I'll have to see.  I want to find something short to test reading the Nook in bed while Keith sleeps.  Getting the book cover made it easier for me to hold.  I might have to switch it from the right side of the cover to the left while I'm reading, putting the weight on my left arm instead of my right.

I'm listening to music on my e-reader. It's pretty good. I don't know how many mp3s I can fit on the device but it will be nice on the train to read or listen to music. Now I really want a cover so I can carry it around with me.

The impromptu party was so much fun - just the perfect thing to have done.  We had Illona Simon and husband, we had Doug Haverty and wife, we had Simply Sondheim's Jim Brewer and his ever-lovin' Amy Dondy who, after twenty years of togetherness, finally hitched the wagon last week, and we had my friend Debby.  I couldn't believe it but the entire pound and a half of wacky noodles went - not even a single noodle left.  That was great, since I would have eaten any leftovers.  All the rolls were eaten, and Illona's homemade brownies were pretty well decimated, too.  Everyone has toddled off into the good night, and I haven't had such a nice January 1st in years.  I wrote, I cooked, I had an impromptu party with nice folks.

Took a looooooooooooooooooooooooong nap (why I was so tired is beyond me!) and watched more Netflix streaming movies...first was my dear friend Jackie Loughery's film HOT ANGEL which co-starred Ed Kemmer. It was something about planes and motorcycles and delinquents and stuff, but I am still not sure.

This still from the movie makes it all seem like some sort of bizarre dream. And yet I know it was real.

Have always wanted to see this film...and so far, so good.

Here we find the film's two stars studying their script.

I guess I'll actually finish the movie I'm watching.  I wrote a couple more pages for a total of close to eleven - I'm sure I'll be futzing with them tomorrow, but I'm very pleased to have gotten that many done - I'll actually probably finish chapter one tomorrow.

A pound of pasta is good for four to five sensible portions.

Heads-up for those with new e-readers:  Richard and I have experienced this phenomenon, both together and separately.  Whenever we're using our Kindles in public, someone always wants to talk to us about them.  I suspect that will subside as more and more people get them, but for now there are a lot of questions.

I've also noticed that phenomenon.  In fact, I believe I've even witnessed happening to your DH Richard. ;)

Strangely enough, I don't see that happening with iPads.

As for the recently broadcast Kennedy Center Honors...

-I finally watched the Jerry Herman tribute online... I almost dozed off again... But is it possible to fall asleep from shock? ::)

-And, I believe, THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYp5hKvLI2w) was the best part of the tribute. :)

I actually liked the Jerry Herman tribute. IT was my favorite part of the show.

DR Jennifer - Well, I guess I was exaggerating just a bit. However, I did find it over-choreographed and over-edited.  But it was nice to see some of Broadway's best male dancers providing the "background" - including Spencer Liff who choreographed a few routines for "SYTYCD" (and has also been in some Rob Ashford productions).

I did find it a little strange(?) that they didn't identify the children's chorus, nor the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington.  All of the "acts" are specifically chosen to "identify" with each of the honorees.

Oh!

bk - From what I understand, what you saw on the broadcast was what was presented on the stage of the Kennedy Center Opera House.

It is. It really is.

Yes, it is...very, very good.  It really affected my friend Margo.  Her older brother has been a stutterer since he was about four or five years old, so it brought up a LOT of memories and feelings for her.  After the movie, she said that his wife Mary was very much like Elizabeth in regards to the unconditional love and not caring about him stuttering.  She LOVED the movie. :)

Just watched the Jerry Herman tribute online.  What was up with those guy dancers?  Such bad choices.  Who was sitting next to Jerry?  He looked a lot like Stephen Sondheim.  I especially liked the addition of the hat part way during the tribute.  It would be awfully ironic if it was SS.  Some of the solos were good, Chita was not.  The choreography was horrid, as was reported here on several occasions.  Just totally wrong for what was going on.  I love all of Jerry Herman, even the not-so-good things.
