Title: JUST LIKE ADRIANA

Well, you've read the notes, the notes connected the dots just like Adriana Hofstetter, and now it is time for you to post until the dotty cows come home.

Topic of the Day:

On my DVR:  OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464913/) that was on the Sundance Channel.

In my new (to me) Blu-ray player:  the complete Metropolis (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Metropolis-Blu-ray-Brigitte-Helm/dp/B0040QYROK/ref=sr_1_2?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1294390226&sr=1-2).  I ordered an Ethernet cable and hooked up my Blu-ray to the Internet and did a firmware update.  It was so easy!  I also watched a couple of YouTube video clips on my TV through the player...that's a pretty cool feature.  Next, I'm going to try the Netflix option. :D

I was looking through my "Play Now" list on Netflix through my player and I have "The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story."  I think that I'll start with that.

Good morning, all! Last day of recording, and I hope the predicted snowfall holds off long enough to get Korliss into town and back home safely before the weather gets terrible. Today we have Jeanne Lehmasn at 10:30, followed by Korliss, and we are finished: 90+ songs, 8 cello and piano pieces, and 16 piano pieces composed between 1888 and 1924. I really have no idea how many discs the final product will entail or how many releases this will become; I suspect an album of piano solos, an album of cello & piano, and several sets of songs. When it comes to 90+ songs, I have no idea how they'll be packaged: chronologically?  by type: anthem, Irish ballad, revue number, propaganda?

I'll leave all of that to New World Records; all I know is that I've now got a lot of notes to write!

That's my day.

TOD: If I find time to get to the library, I plan on picked up "Toy Story 3" and "Great Expectations" for the weekend DVD viewing.

CD: "Happy End," "Kitty's Kisses," "13"

Car CD: Autobiography of Mark Twain, Disc 9 of 20.

Reading: Some stuff for class. Trying to get an early start before the classes begin.

Last night, we watched THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC w/Judy Holliday.

It's a fun movie and the cast is great.

I've never seen the show on stage, but I'll bet it's just as funny (or funnier) when the character is (as originally written) a sweet old lady (ala Josephine Hull), rather than a show girl.

We had a confectioners sugar coating of snow this morning and it resulted in the loveliest train ride I've ever had on this commute.  The snow brought out details in every stick of wood and stone along the Schuylkill River.  It was all so beautiful that I couldn't take my eyes away from the train window and I barely read a word of my book.

The one that Ghostlight released from the American Conservatory Theater. It's supposedly the first English language recording and it's good.

I'm enjoying "Kitty's Kisses." It isn't a great score, but it's pleasant. I need to do some research on it though. Was "The Continental" written for that (it's only in the Finale and not mentioned by that name) or was it just incorporated to give the recording a "hit" song?

How many of you are aware that Anderson Cooper had, as a guest on his show, former child star Kirk Cameron on AC 360...as an "expert" commentator on whether or not there is any "revelatory" meaning behind the deaths of thousands of birds and fish in recent days?

Yes, THAT Kirk Cameron...the one who became "born-again"...the one who starred in the very lackluster series of "Left Behind" movies (movies that might have been much, much better)...as an "expert" on possible religious implications?

I'm beyond apalled, frankly.

Heard from Muse Margaret - she hadn't read the pages last night because it was her anniversary and she and her ever-lovin' Richard went out to celebrate thirty-six years.  But, she read them this morning and was very happy with it all save for some stuff in the first chapter.  The way she first said that she had problems with the opening got me really worried, but it turned out to be some really minor stuff - words, really, descriptive prose that she didn't feel were right for Adriana - it took me all of thirty seconds to fix those four or five things.  Funnily, too of the words I'd used in one of the other books and she'd had the same reaction then and I'd removed them or replaced them - but I forgot about it and used them again.  But that's why she's so good with my stuff.  She just instinctively knows when something is off, even if it's one word or a phrase.  But she loved everything else, especially the return of a character from the last book.  And the plot is holding her interest, so that's good.  And I'm mushing on and have written a little over a page.  I'm still feeling a little weird but my throat is already feeling better.

In a Review by William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide (quoted from e-music.com (http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Artists-PS-Classics-Kitty-s-Kisses-2009-Studio-Cast-Recording-MP3-Download/11676203.html)):

Krasker, however, sweetens the pot a little. He notes that one part of the score was missing despite his efforts, the "Finale Ultimo." "… [R]ather than omit it altogether," he writes in his liner notes, "we devised one of our own with a playful tip of the hat to the composer." That is to say, he interpolated another Conrad song at the end, perhaps the composer's best-known composition, "The Continental" from the 1934 Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers film The Gay Divorcée, the first song to win an Academy Award. Thus, Kitty's Kisses finally has its hit song, albeit drafted in from eight years in the future.

Thank you, George. I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to read the booklets with any of the CDs I got for Christmas. I've barely had time to listen to the CDs. That makes sense on a certain level, but the song feels out of place with the rest of the score.

By the way, Danny Burstein practically steals the album. He's really funny.

I'm sure it will come to pass that the Streisand Gypsy was just a way to keep her name in the press.  I don't think it will ever happen and if it does it wouldn't be for at least two years and by then she'd be seventy-two or something.  It's laughable.

I've written three pages and that may end up being it for the day, especially if Gregory Harrison is coming by at two-thirty (I haven't had confirmation, but it could happen).  I have to shower and then do a couple of errands.  So, unless I get home from the Gardenia by eleven and whip out a few more pages, then that will be it, and I'll probably do more than usual tomorrow.  I remember the days when I was thrilled if I'd done three pages in a day.  And I'm pretty far ahead on this one, having done an average of ten a day.

Would they bill that as "Barbra 'Mame'" or "Streisand 'Mame'" (vis a vis "Lucy 'Mame'")?   :)

It's just too sad for words.

Oh, come on. You don't think Anderson and CNN were up to something?

After having watched Anderson Cooper giggle like a schoolgirl throughout his co-hosting gig with Kathy Griffin at the Tournament of Roses Parade, I have no clue what they'd be up to.

It would be interesting if they had been, however.

The last recording session was smooth and quick: Jeanne arrived at 10:30 and we had her three numbers finished by noon. Korliss and her husband Jerry Grossman, our solo cellist, arrived arounmd then, and we took a lunch break while Korliss warmed up. She had four songs, and we finished everything with her in about two hours. It was a great way to end the recording sessions.

I don't think this is sad.

I just think it's dumb.

GYPSY
has been filmed twice.  Once with Roz Russell and once with Bette Midler.

The Midler one, as I recall, was pretty good.

If Hollywood is going to make a Broadway musical, how about one that has never been done before (e.g. LES MISERABLES, RAGTIME)

A couple of hours ago Richard and I started out to the grocery store with the intention that later we'd send Rob out for carry-out pizza.  However, we slid down our driveway, almost hitting the stone wall that borders the lower half on the driver's side.  So I called Rob and asked him to shovel and salt while we were gone and we bought the makings for homemade pizza.  The crusts have now been pre-baked and are cooling to get crisp.  Soon I'll add toppings and finish the baking and no one will have to go back out.

I'm very glad you did not hit the stone wall!!!

Ben and Ant are playing house. We went to the doctor and all is well. I have to see my regular doctor this coming week to get an OK for surgery and to tell him all that's happened since December 10th (my official physician has not been involved in any of this since I couldn't reach him when it happened). I see my appendicitis doctor again on January 21st and we will then set the date for the surgery in February.

We then came home and had dinner and watched two more lectures on the history of musical theatre. It's a 4-DVD set done by a professor at Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. A friend lent them to us. It's a well-done set. We are now finished with Broadway in it's infancy and we have 8 more 45 minute lectures to go.

I personally think La Streisand would make a smashing Mama Rose.  I will say her voice showed its age on that Blu-ray concert I reviewed last year, and I was in fact kind of shocked, though even Babs herself said it was due to her not having sung for so long, so maybe with proper warm-ups, she'd be OK.  Plus her perfectionism would mean the pre-records would have to meet with her approval.

Wow - only page 5 at 7:43pm PST?  Must have been a busy day.

I for one took down the Christmas decor from the front lawn when I returned home from work.  In 7th grade today we began talking about storytelling on the stage in the form of musical theatre, opera and ballet - all of which we will touch on soon.  As we were talking about elements of all three, one of my 7th grade boys constantly asked about make-up and costumes, at least 3 times.  I laughed inside and prayed for him!

Good very late evening.  Had a very busy day at work. Then we had a historic preservation holiday get together.  It was really fun.  It was at the home of one of the commission memebers.  It's an 1892 Victorian than they moved across town.  It's a huge house on a hill now that I first noticed when I first moved to town.  It's always fascinated me, so it was really cool to go there.  They've been restoring it for 15 years and it's really incredible.  There were 9 of us, so it was a really fun size group. We did pot luck appetizers and had a liitle wine. Lots of fascinating talk and a very very good time.

Have we really stooped so low that Roseanne Barr and Ted Nugent are actually who we should be listen to about politics?
Have we stooped so low that George W. Bush or anyone in his cabinet would be a person we would listen to about politics?

Great news that all is well.

I have at least caught up with today's postings. And now I must go to bed. Night, all.

Here's some sad news:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2011/01/barbra-streisand-as-mama-rose-why-not-patti-lupone-.html

I don't have a problem with the idea of Streisand playing Mama Rose, but I do think she's a too old for the part.  I'd rather see her do MAME.

I would rather she do SUNSET BLVD.

I'd love to see Babs in Sunset Blvd.

Shayne - while it would be lovely to make every note of music a separate track to do so would make the publishing royalty prohibitive, which is why tracks are combined.  So, no, it was not even a remote possibility.

My very long day is finally done.  Not as much writing as I'd hoped to do (about five pages) but I'll do more tomorrow.  I was going to do a couple more tonight but now the helper's boyfriend has moved up our meeting time to nine in the morning.  This entire business is really starting to irk me now - I just want things to work the way they were working, i.e. not everything falling on my shoulders.  There are simply not enough hours in the day for me to have to do everything.

I started to connect my new Blu-ray player to my TV with my brand new (and quite inexpensive) HDMI cable and found that my DVR was connected to my TV with BOTH component AND HDMI cables.  I don't remember setting it up that way, but both work.  So, I left the existing HDMI cable hooked up to my DVR and moved the component cables to my regular DVD player.  I then connected my new Blu-ray player to my TV with my brand new (and quite inexpensive) HDMI cable.

I then watched almost the whole first hour of the newly restored "Metropolis" and now am watching "2001: A Space Odyssey."

"WOW," is all I have to say about the picture quality. :D
