Title: EXHAUSTED AND EXHILARATED

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both exhausting and exhilarating, and now it is time for you to post until the exhausted and exhilarated cows come home.

And now as promised, here's your advance announcement of the new Kritzerland release - a really great score by one of my favorite composers - it's great to have him on Kritzerland.  You know the drill -19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73 total) paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

Kritzerland is proud to present a new world premiere limited edition soundtrack release:

A DRY WHITE SEASON

Music Composed and Conducted by Dave Grusin

Made in 1989, A Dry White Season, a searing indictment of South Africa under apartheid, was a superb, riveting film that audiences simply did not want to see, despite excellent reviews.  Perhaps it was because South Africa was still in the final throes of apartheid and the film was just too uncomfortable to watch.  Sometimes people need distance and one suspects that if the film had come out even a decade later it would have probably been more successful.  As it is, over the years people have discovered it and been truly affected by its portrayal of racial turmoil in a country divided and the way the film was able to put the politics of apartheid in meaningful human terms.

Set in 1976 around the time of the Soweto riots, the film was adapted from a novel by Andre Brink (the only book in Afrikaans to be banned in South Africa), and directed by Euzhan Palcy, who was the first black female director ever hired to direct a major studio film (MGM).   Palcy had made the critically acclaimed feature Sugar Cane Alley, which was highly thought of by other filmmakers.   She co-wrote A Dry White Season with Colin Welland.  The film was shot on a fairly tight budget of nine million dollars, an amazing figure when you consider the cast involved – Donald Sutherland (giving the performance of his career), Janet Suzman, Susan Sarandon, and, coming out of retirement because he was so moved by the project, Marlon Brando, who worked for scale.  The supporting performances are equally stellar, including Zakes Mokae, Winston Ntshona and Jurgen Prochnow.   Marlon Brando is unforgettable as the attorney – he has only two scenes but gives a brilliant performance for which he received and Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor (the film’s only nomination).  Thanks to DVD and cable, new audiences have been able to discover this important and terrific film.  Its reputation keeps growing with each passing year.

Adding immeasurably to the project is Dave Grusin’s score.  Grusin proved to be the perfect choice, and in a career filled with great scores (The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, Heaven Can Wait, Tootsie, The Goonies, On Golden Pond, The Milagro Beanfield War, Three Days Of The Condor, The Goodbye Girl, Murder By Death, and on and on), A Dry White Season is one of his best – moody, haunting, tension-filled, and extremely moving – like the film, it really gets under your skin.

The score as used in the film is quite short.  However, some cues went unused, some were truncated, so this CD uses the cues as they were originally written and recorded, which results in a longer playing time and in a more satisfying musical presentation. We’ve included two bonus tracks – alternate versions of two cues.

Dave Grusin is one of those composers who can do everything.  And he has – from dramatic film scoring to his great work in television (It Takes A Thief, Maude, Good Times, Baretta, The Name Of The Game, Columbo, etc.), to wonderful light comedy scores, as well as his jazz and arranging/conducting projects for such incredible people as Quincy Jones, Paul Simon, Sergio Mendes, Al Jarreau, Patti Austin, Billy Joel and many others.  He is a multiple Grammy Award-winner, a multiple Academy Award nominee (he won the Oscar for The Milagro Beanfield War).  Now in his mid-70s, he’s still the coolest guy in any room, and he’s still going strong.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the last week of February – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Today, I'm ushering for the two, count 'em TWO performances of the touring production of The Wizard of Oz (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2011/1/8/the-national-tour-of-the-wizard-of-oz.html), performing in downtown Olympia!  I need to be at the Washington Center by 12:30 pm...at least parking is free on weekends.  I need to shower, get dressed and get something to eat before I get there, so I must act quickly.  It's gonna be a fun day in Oz!

Have a good day, all!

Yesterday, I ushered for two very good performances of "The Wizard of Oz."  The young woman who played Dorothy reminded me (vocally) a little bit of Alet Taylor.  The woman playing the Wicked Witch of the West was also very good.  Overall, it was a lot of fun and each performance had audiences of over 800 who thoroughly enjoyed them.  It was quite a successful two-performance run.  A friend that I hadn't seen in probably 15 years was there.  We chatted a tiny bit before the show started, but we were able to talk again after the show.  It was nice to catch up with him. :D

The meeting this morning was fine.  The helper's boyfriend and the helper's best friend will coordinate and get done what needs to be done, so that it's not all falling on my shoulders.  Apparently our vibes and xylophones are working but we're going to have to keep them coming VERY strongly for another two weeks, I think.  One piece of advice I gave them was heeded and that apparently did some good.

CONTINUED VIBES!!!

Good morning, all! Since I will be away tomorrow and Tuesday, I am up early to so laundry. I wish I were sleeping in.  Last night's dream was something convoluted about post offices, a closing performance of something that I was attendng with Marni Nixon, and a shopping bag of unopened mail that I was carting about while looking for my shoes.

First, coffee.

The laundry is in the dryers, the bathroom is mopped, and the bed is made.

When I was in Ohio last month, the lady who's taking my collection of papers into the Rare Books and Manuscripts division asked me to begin a list of Friends and acquaintances for reference to corrspondence, etc.
So, this morning I've been adding names and comments to my lists.

I liked REPORT TO THE COMMISSIONER that MR BK mentioned in the notes......I saw it at the drive in movie theatre a couple of times in the last century.

I enjoyed Mr Michael Moriarity (he played The Gentleman Caller on television in the Katharine Hepburn television version of THE GLASS MENAGERIE.   However, I had to turn the movie off because of Susan Blakeley's "intense" performance as a police informant.....she is certainly a graduate of the Jill St. John/Yvette Mimieux Dramatic School with a major in indication.

So sorry to read DR MBARNUM's post about Mr Aron Kincaid who was much appreciated in his appearances.....not for his acting.

I saw him most recently on one of those "Hollywood" mystery shows that used to be popular.  He owned and lived in a rather notorious house....but now I can't recall if it was the George Reeves home or the Jean Harlow/Paul Bern manse.

Good morning all!

I finished the laundry, got gas for Bonny, food for the dogs and then for me and still forgot to stop off at the local CVS to pick up a prescription refill for my BP.   Guess I'll have to make a quick run over to get that.

I also started my job hunt on-line.  There really isn't anything out there in my price range and I know it will take some time to find something that I feel will make me happy.  Now that I've made the decision to move on, I feel better.

I had a weird dream last night about---vampires.  I haven't read or seen any movie about them so it was strange that they would pop up.  They were good vampires.  A family or group of friends if I remember correctly.

I can't wait to get the heating back on line.  I know 58 doesn't seem very cold to some of you but that is the temp in my living room as I type this.    I have a small space heater on but considering all the fires that our area has had from people using them, I really don't like using it.  I won't leave it on when I pop over to get my  prescription sometime this afternoon.  Hopefully it will be warmer by then.

I'm going to try to make a knock off recipe for Olive Gardens Chicken and Gnocchi soup for dinner tonight.  I think that a good hot bowl of soup will help to warm me up.

I delayed going out yesterday because two of my all time favorite movies were on--Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride II.  They are both a two hankie type of movie.  I lose it every time.

Not much else going on so laters all!

More exhilarated than exhausted here.  Just reviewed details of upcoming Herb Alpert & Lani Hall shows in Boston & New York City in about five weeks!  A good friend is flying in from London to join us.  Front row tables at both venues!  Really looking forward to the NYC show in the Allen Room at Lincoln Center - behind the stage is a huge wall of windows, looking out on Columbus Circle.

BTW, their new CD, I Feel You, is due out Feb. 8th on Concord.

58 is cold. I tried to keep the heat off here until December, but when the thermostat hit 58, I turned it on. To 63. That is not comfortable for me, but it's better than freezing all the time. I now have it on somewhere between 63 and 67, depending.

I've been busy and a half - working at the theater and the ballet - got some very good news yesterday, about a large grant I wrote for said ballet... It's true, it's true: everything IS beautiful at the ballet...

Friday started our extended run of the LA premiere of Cormac McCarthy's SUNSET LIMITED at Rogue Machine Theatre, after a 2-week hiatus. Still filling the house. Wow, what a good show - I'm still so proud to be a part of that org!!! Just sent in another large grant request for them, too...

Family 'stuff' continues apace. Not something to discuss here...

Well, off I go to my weekly gig at rehab! Still love that job.

(Oh! forgot to say: I found out in a company newsletter that the LA premiere of my show happens in May at Rogue Machine! Whaddaya know!)

On January 1st a new over the air station began broadcasting. It's called Antenna TV and it's a mix of cheesy movies, 3 Stooges, Benny Hill and late 50s, 60s, 70s and some 80s sitcoms. Right now they are showing the pilot episode of Here Come the Brides.

They are also showing, relatively in order, the Partridge Family. We have to look out for Bruce's episodes.

Oh, and it's Sunday here in Dominica. -Which means the only shops and restaurants that are open are the ones right by the dock. I walked a mile "up" into town when I got off the boat, and it was like a ghost-town. Shuttered store fronts, no one on the streets. Almost like parts of midtown East on a Sunday in NYC. ;)

In other news...

After we leave Dominica in a few hours, then it's three days at sea before we arrive back in New York City. I've been having a very good time, but although the sense of "escape" has been nice, I am looking forward to being back in the City. It's a truly isolated lifestyle on board. Maybe just a touch too isolated for me. Of course, that hasn't stopped from enjoying some of the incredible food on board. Thankfully, not all of it has been incredible. ;) -But the still-warms scones they serve at afternoon tea... Yummy!

Watching the David Lean "Great Expectations" this afternoon. Great look, wonderful feel, even if the beginning is a little like a Cliffs Notes version of the novel.

Hello!

I went to see Little Fockers, finally.  As a fan of Ms. Streisand, I couldn't not go even with the terrible reviews!  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, though I have to say there weren't too many laughs in the crowd of about 25 people at a 10:45 am showing.

Love the Allen Room!   I saw a tribute to lyricist David Zippel there a few years ago.  Among the performers: HHW's own Jason Graae & Brent Barrett and a young Sierra Boggess, who's had quite a career since, starring in Phantom in Las Vegas, The Little Mermaid on Broadway and currently Love Never Dies on the West End.

According to IMDb, BK's episodes are:

- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Partridge (1971) TV episode .... Freddy
- The Partridge Papers (1972) TV episode .... Marvin
- You're Only Young Twice (1972) TV episode .... Richard
- Me and My Shadow (1973) TV episode .... Delbert
- The Last of Howard (1973) TV episode .... Howard

Doing that will further enhance and add additional provenance to the material.

Good luck to you Danise!  I send many positive vibes and thoughts

I went to storage and pulled charts - I was a little shocked at what I found - by the time we'd done The Sherman Brothers Album we had everything down to a science - but we were missing most of the orchestrations (not that I need them) and a few piano/vocals, which is not good in the case of the long Jason Graae medley of Sherman Brothers nonsense words.  I do have the sort of lead sheet version that Todd Ellison and I did when working up that arrangement, so hopefully our MD will be able to figure it out from there.

They are now saying that we have a chance to have the biggest snowfall we have had since December of 2008.  That storm dumped almost a foot of snow on Tacoma and Olympia, which is very uncommon for this area.  Since the Seattle-Tacoma area has mountain ranges on either side of us, makes it difficult to know when and if we will get snow.

Cillaliz, why was he only charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder? Don't all the other people count?

Because this is the federal court case.  Murder is generally a state crime.  For the judge, the staffer who died, the staffers who were injured and the congresswoman it's federal because there is a statute that says it's a federal offense to kill, assault, etc a federal employee acting in their offical capacity.  The complaint apparently states that Judge Roll went to talk to Congresswoman Giffords about the HUGE caseload in the District of Arizona.   That's totally plausible since the caseload there is a huge issue and it would mean he was acting in his official capacity.  The staffers and the Congresswoman were clearly doing an event= official capacity.

They have made it clear that there could be more charges.  The  murder charges for the others would  be in state court as there is no federal jursidiction for them.  It wouldn't be double jeopardy because the federal court is a separate sovereign from the state court so you can be tried in both courts for the same event.

They had to start someplace and it makes sense to start with the highest profile cases.  If the evidence shows he was targeting Congresswoman Giffords, as is expected, then it would make even more sense to start in federal court. That doesn't mean it's the end of the charges, only the beginning
Title: Re: EXHAUSTED AND EXHILARATED
Post by: Cillaliz on January 09, 2011, 05:13:55 PM
I can give you an example that's pretty clear from my current caseload.  I have a client who is accused of robbing a drug dealer at gunpoint during what was apparently a drug deal for 50 pounds of marijuana.  The seller was a federal cooperator and the incident was videotaped.  The state filed robbery and assault charges.  The feds filed drug charges and carrying a firearm in connection with a drug trafficking offense.   So, I'm defending him in two different courts for charges out of the same incident

No, I'm sure that's not it.  Plus it's only the complaint.  Charges can change depending on what the grand jury votes to indict on.  The U.S. Attorney could ask for more charges if they can figure out a way to do it.   Like I said, it's just the beginning.

Judy is a past president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.  She's headed Federal defender and community defender offices around the country. She was in Washington or Oregon at one time.  She's in San Diego now.

Thanks Cilla, that confirms what I saw.  The dates on the articles were old enough she could have moved.  For her sake I hope there are direct flights between the two cities.

Beginning next month United canceled their non-stop flight from here to Portland, definitely a result of the economy.

I'm under the impression the state has to pay her bill.  Would that include her traveling expenses since they wanted someone from out of the area?

She's living in San Diego now. That's an hour flight from Phoenix and there are lots of them.   If she's working for a salary or on contract she'll get paid whatever that is.  Otherwise, these are federal charges so the feds pay not the state. For death penalty court appointed federal cases the current rate is $178 per hour

Never mind. I see they are federal charges. I'm sure the rest will be charged by the county.

Oh sheesh! I should have read your next post instead of going into a long explanation

I am glad that you did. It clarified things.

We have met Marni Nixon a few times over the past few years through a mutual friend. The mutual friend used to be her personal assistant and we met her at an annual Christmas party. Larry is correct, she's a delightful woman.

Larry is also delightful and, as always, we had a great visit.

Good vibes for your DC trip Lar.

I have no idea what tomorrow will bring.  Schools are already scheduled to be 2 hours late.  We're supposed to have about 7 inches of snow by morning.   I have a 9:00 AM appointment so I'll get up early and see if I can dig out. It's a fine light snow, so it may not be a big deal to move it.   Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Aspiring politician Christina-Taylor Green was born in the midst of tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001, and died Saturday morning while trying to meet Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

The strong-willed 9-year-old third-grader had gone to meet Giffords with a neighbor when she was shot. She died later at University Medical Center.

Her neighbor was shot four times and was recovering from surgery Saturday evening.

Christina-Taylor had just been elected to the student council at Mesa Verde Elementary School and had been interested in politics from a young age, her father, John Green, said Saturday night.

"She was a good speaker. I could have easily seen her as a politician," her father said.

The brown-eyed athletic girl had one sibling, an 11-year-old brother named Dallas, and the two loved to go swimming together.

She'd already told her parents she wanted to attend Penn State one day and have a career that involved helping those less fortunate than her.

She also loved animals and was a passionate dancer who loved ballet, hip-hop, jazz and gymnastics and was the only girl on her Canyon del Oro Little League baseball team, "The Pirates." She played second base.

Christina-Taylor came from a family of baseball players. Her grandfather, former major-league pitcher Dallas Green, was team manager for the Philadelphia Phillies when they won the World Series in 1980.

"She kept up with everyone, she was a strong girl, a very good athlete and a strong swimmer," said her mother, Roxanna Green. "She was interested in everything. She got a guitar for Christmas so her next thing was learning to play guitar."

Christina-Taylor also enjoyed singing in a church choir at St. Odilia's Catholic Church, where she had received her first Holy Communion in the spring.

"'Let the children come to me,' Jesus said (Matthew 19:14). Christina is with Him," Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas wrote in a letter to parishioners sent from Jordan, where he is attending a bishops' meeting.

Already aware of inequalities in the world around her, Christina-Taylor often repeated the same phrase to her mother: "We are so blessed. We have the best life."

Her birth date no doubt helped inspire Christina-Taylor's interest in politics, Roxanna Green said. She was one of 50 9/11 babies featured in a book called "Faces of Hope."

"She was born back east and Sept. 11 affected everyone there, and Christina-Taylor was always very aware of it. She was very patriotic and wearing red, white and blue was really special to her," her mother said.

"She was all about helping people, and being involved. It's so tragic. She went to learn today and then someone with so much hatred in their heart took the lives of innocent people."

Tucson, AZ — The controversial Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) and Rev. Fred Phelps have been quick to capitalize on Saturday's tragic shootings in Tucson.

The Topeka-based church, known for protesting the funerals of American soldiers, released a statement shortly after the shootings with the headline, "Thank God for the shooter - 6 dead! WBC will picket their funerals!"

"God sent the shooter!," the statement continued. "Your fag-loving Congresswoman fights for her life."

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) was targeted and shot Saturday morning at a supermarket in Tucson. She remains in critical condition.

Six other people died, including a 9-year-old girl, who was the granddaughter of former Yankees and Mets manager Dallas Green, Arizona Federal Court Judge John Roll and an aide to the congresswoman, Gabe Zimmerman.

Always looking for attention - even negative - Westboro Baptist Church members plan to picket memorial services of the shooting victims.

Westboro Baptist Church, is not affiliated with a larger denomination and is made up mostly of the 71-year-old Phelps' extended family. WBC is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League and is classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Phelps and his church gained national attention when they protested at the funeral of Matthew Shephard with signs that read "No Fags in Heaven" and "God Hates Fags."

In December, Westboro Baptist Church picketed the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards.

Here's the federal complaint if anyone wants to see it.  I worked with the Magistrate who signed it when I was in Phoenix, heck I even went to her wedding.   It's really strange to know so many players here.  I also worked for Judge Martone who is another Federal District Court Judge in Phoenix (he was a Superior Court Judge then).  I've been thinking of him today

Today when the alarm went off, I just decided that whatever gets done gets done, and went back to sleep.

It turned out to be a nice day, smelled the roses outside (actually cut them and took them inside to be next to the computer) this way I can be here and smell them too.

Dumped a bunch of junk that was piled up next to the house in the dumpster across the street.  Good physical exercised always helps.

Listened to John Coltrane, Sergio Mendes, and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.

I am finally winding down for the evening.  Foolishly, I thought this day would have some ME time, but that most certainly was not the case.  I'll talk about it all in the notes, but I've been going since nine-thirty this morning and have just finished everything I wanted and needed to finish.  But having done so frees up tomorrow from everything but writing.  I got the charts, I wrote eleven pages, I wrote all the contextual commentary for the Gardenia show, I listened to our new master and approved it (we're adding two more bonus tracks since I have them and the album was just a little short for my taste), approved the item listing page, got the audio samples to the web guy and that was that.  Even though I wrote eleven pages of book (and fixed the ten I wrote yesterday) and wrote five pages of commentary, I must still write the notes.
