We have snow again, though not enough to cause major disruptions. My office is still open and NYC public schools are still open. Some commuter trains are not running (the line to Ronkonkoma for one) but the subway is running, albeit on a reduced  schedule, and many other things are open for business so I will be heading in after I finish the oatmeal with pecans, dried cherries and cinnamon and coffee.

Sounds like the production of

Dracula (http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/theater/dracula_debt_on_arrival_pmMluWJcOtlIfqvDCaj9OJ)

Dracula 2 (http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/theater/dracula_crew_raises_stakes_zZjzDpQruhzrNmgmKUfDXJ)

which just closed off-Broadway (mostly due to awful reviews) was a comedy of errors from the beginning.

I was actually looking  forward to seeing Dracula, then the appendicitis happened and the reviews came out and I missed it. I do like the Little Shubert space. It's too bad the theatre isn't used more often. I know it's Off-Broadway and the finances are impossible for OB shows but still, it's a nice space.

I remain as ever fascinated by this from the first Dracula article:

The designers, who worked for weeks without contracts, had a stormy meeting with him last month. When he fled, they followed him to his car and shamed him into returning to the theater.
"We sort of kidnapped him," says Kenn, "and made him sign our contracts."

They admit they forced him to sign a contract??????

I do wonder if they'll find a way to add some seats to the Little Shubert and call it a Broadway theater.

Re comments from last night - The ex-boss matter is going to be going on a long time, there's just no way around it.  They seem to be finding inventive ways to not only make efforts to keep future unemployment payments from being made, but also part of what they want seems to be to get unemployment already paid to be paid back.

Title: Re: KRITZERLAND AT THE GARDENIA 5
Post by: FJL on January 12, 2011, 05:08:04 AM
For them what they're doing in the unemployment case for me has impact beyond just my unemployment.  (I'm wondering given how much they must b spending on legal bills here, whether there are issues re other workers as well.  With the possibility being that they could have to pay up to 99 weeks worth of whatever their share of this is, in this economy, it's a bigger issue than it normally would have been in  anormla economy when only 26 weeks was the potential.

Wednesday morning greetings!  Day 2 of our holding pattern here, but I have a feeling we're not going anywhere today.  Reports are that what little melted in the south yesterday has refrozen and now the snow is blowing, too.

I still don't understand their theories on this.  the last time they gave their grounds for appeal, they were nonsensical o me, but it did seem to serve a procedural function of shlepping it out from August (when they filed that paper) through October (when we had the first quick and most recent hearing, their statement was found insufficient, but that doesn;t result in a dismissal, it seemed to be enough that they got to drag it out) and still dragging on right now.

Good morning, all! I slept terribly, although I was glad to be home, and I am all caught up on the past two days.

I'm happy to know that DR Danise and the dogs are warm and the heater is repaired.

I wish Joshie a safe trip to the vet with no tantrums.

I think it's nice that DR RonPulliam rushed to the defense of Lea Michelle, although the gossip seems to indicate that she is a Royal Pain and not a particularly friendly or pleasant young lady. The actress in TRUE GRIT may not have Ms Michelle's bellowing chops, but she's a younger and better actress.

So, my trip to DC had its fraught moments, but on Monday night I had a wonderful dinner with my friend amd Sousa authority, conductor and curator Loras Schissel of the LoC Music Division. Yesterday, I got to the LoC around 9 am, spent a profitable morning playing in the card catalog and the lady who made LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 one of the worst career experiences of my life showed up to work - I was hoping she'd take the day off, gven her "personal" problems - and she wanted to be friendly; I did not.

Then we we had at 11 a long meeting about the McGlinn estate with the executor, the head of the Music Division Susan Vita, Loras, Mark Horowitz, Jan who has much to do with the Music Division's website, Dan (David?) who manages the reading room. and the lady I wanted to avoid! The meeting, because one person never shuts up, lasted two and a half hours! Then we - the lady I wanted to avoid, the executor, Sue Vita, and I - went to lunch, came back, visited with several other librarians whose company I like, and got the 5:05 train to Dodge. I think the meeting was interesting and several goals were achieved. I was primarily there to provide the introduction to the McGlinnestate executor.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Successful Outcome Vibes for DR FJL! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks for the vibes, Lar.  But I gather they've got much at stake that's bigger than Unemployment matters, so all i can do is keep up my job search and hope that the amount of unemployment for them to go after is as small as possible.
Job-finding vibes would be lovely, though!
Was this already posted about LEA-MICHELE-GATE?   Perhaps an appearance by the TRUE GRIT star on GLEE is in the future?  LOL!
http://www.popeater.com/2011/01/11/lea-michele-never-hurt-true-grit-star/
Earlier this month, we reported about 14-year-old, SAG Nominee Hailee Steinfeld being majorly let down by Lea Michele when the 'Glee' starlet refused to sign an autograph. In an interview with J-14 Magazine, Hailee described the snub as one of her most embarrassing moments.
But Gossip Cop discovered that one key part of the story was omitted. It was not Lea Michele who "dissed" the talented 'True Grit' star. It was actually a production assistant, whose premiere role on set was to keep the show's tenacious fans at bay.
Even though Lea wasn't at fault for Hailee's letdown, she still feels bad. "I heard Hailee was upset and feel terrible," she said. "The 'Glee' schedule is so jam-packed that the PA probably pulled me so that I wouldn't be late to set. I never meant to hurt her feelings. She's an extraordinary talent and I look forward to meeting her one day."
That sounds more like the girl who brings life to Rachel Berry Tuesday nights. That said, someone should find out if Hailee can sing. Lea could pull some strings and bring the 'True Grit' talent to McKinley High!
Thanks for the links DR BEN.
I understand about them not receiving their money - it's terrible....but I think some of their actions were destructive and useless - and very demoralizing to the actors and others working on the show.....I hope Kim enjoys wearing that cape around the house, and the other guy likes keeping his tools in that coffin.
I liked David Nelson in his two circus movies.  And I thought that he and first wife June were a nice looking couple on the show.  I did think it was kind of strange that June - and Ricky's wife Kris - got a husband and a job on tv all at the same time.
And I remember an interview with David Nelson where he was asked about the differences between his real life and his life on television and he replied:  "On television, my mother knows where the kitchen is."
Wow- page two at 6:15am PST, far cry from yesterday, however I was impressed that yesterday got to page 9.  Of course, I didn't help matters at all.  Up earlier than usual (actually, since 4:15) as DD Manny decided to throw up on the bed, so in went the bedclothes to the washer, and I was up for the day.  Can't say those early hours were productive, but they were nice nonetheless.
Today is a long one.  School, chidren's choir, perhaps the gym or a bike ride and then a rehearsal (Working) and then home.  I'm thinking by 11:30pm.   Will try and check in.
I had to sit across from her as well!
So, I've been to the post office and picked up the mail and now I have to head to the NYU Dental Clinic. I hope it all goes smoothly, since I have no idea if it's the next step or a repeat of the last because something went wrong. Again. Which has happened too many times in the past two months. I suppose that is the downside of student doctors, but I like my Russian lady, so we'll see how it goes today.
After that, Toyland with Skip Kennon, depending n the weather.
Hopefully I can stay awake today. Yesterday, at work, I could not keep my eyes open, I just felt exhausted. I went home at 1pm, hopped into bed and slept until 5pm. Got up, watched an old Evelyn Ankers movie, surfed the net, and was back in bed by about 8 or 8:30. I think I am trying to fight off a cold...gosh knows everyone and his dog at work has been sick as well as lots of people at my apartment building.
Well, the lingering effects of the winter storm that hit the southeast have altered our plans somewhat.  Instead of a 13-day driving tour, we're taking a 7-day fly/drive trip.  Unfortunately, Charleston was the major casualty, so we'll have to plan a visit there another time.  We'll fly to Jacksonville, FL, on Saturday, drive to Savannah for 3 days, back to St. Augustine for Richard's meeting, and then fly back from Jacksonville next Friday.
Today's visit to the clinic was the proverbial one that gives dentists a bad rep: painful, rough, generally unpleasant. As I feared, the last set of impressions had to be redone, only after some painful work was performed. My dentist, knowing what I was in for, did give me a bottle of champagne as a New Year's gift before the hell began. I should have drunk it immediately.
I did have a good time texting Steven LaBrie between rounds of anguish, though.
DR JRand,
I received two widescreen, in-color Toho Studios gangster pictures from 1959/60 both featuring Toshiro Mifune and assorted Toho stock company actors...lots of fun. I will send you copies in return.
Akira Takarada, as a gangster turned lounge singer, sings the song "Your Right Blinker is Not Working" in one of the films.
I took a Snow Day for myself today.  Lain in bed till I felt like getting up and then had a leisurely breakfast.  Then I got myself prepped and went out to shovel.  Not a lot out there to clean up so it didn't take me long to clear off the pathway and sidewalk and then my car.  I saw two little girls from down the street chasing their collarless poodle and then I had to help my neighbor lady across the street (one of the neighbors I know) chase down her dog who was having a great time running circles around us.  He finally outsmarted himself by running into his own backyard trying to get away from us.
I liked David Nelson in his two circus movies.  And I thought that he and first wife June were a nice looking couple on the show.  I did think it was kind of strange that June - and Ricky's wife Kris - got a husband and a job on tv all at the same time.
And I remember an interview with David Nelson where he was asked about the differences between his real life and his life on television and he replied:  "On television, my mother knows where the kitchen is."
David's son was a production assistant on my film, CHEYENNE WARRIOR.
In the Something To Make You Feel Old Dept:
ALL IN THE FAMILY made its network premier on CBS forty years ago tonight.
While I remember that we (my dad, one of my older sisters and myself) laughed a lot at the first episode, we wound up watching only one other episode that first season (the reason being that it ran against the last half hour of the ABC Movie of the Week.)
By queens, of course, I mean the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and, um, the other one...
I just received the following e-mail.
For what it's worth.
Visa / MasterCard FRAUD
Just a heads up for everyone regarding the latest in Visa fraud. Royal Bank
received this communication about the newest scam. This is happening in
southern Alberta right now and moving.
This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information,
except the one piece they want..
Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it.
This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA &
MasterCard telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to
protect yourself. One of our employees was called on Wednesday from 'VISA',
and I was called on Thursday from 'MasterCard'.
The scam works like this:
Person calling says - 'This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and
Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460, Your card has been
flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This
would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you
purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a marketing company
based in Arizona ?'  When you say 'No', the caller continues with, 'Then we
will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been
watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500
purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the
credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?' You say
'yes'.
The caller continues - 'I will be starting a Fraud Investigation. If you
have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of
your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this
Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. 'Do you need me
to read it again?'
Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works - The caller then says, 'I
need to verify you are in possession of your card'.  He'll ask you to 'turn
your card over and look for some numbers'. There are 7 numbers; the first 4
are part of your card number, the last 3 are the Security Numbers that
verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you
sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card.  The
caller will ask you to read the last 3 numbers to him. After you tell the
caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, 'That is correct, I just needed to verify
that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your
card.  Do you have any other questions?'
After you say no, the caller then thanks you and states, 'Don't hesitate to
call back if you do', and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they
never ask for or tell you the card number. But after we were called on
Wednesday, we called back. Within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we were
glad we did!  The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in
the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card. We
made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a
new number.  What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of
the card. Don't give it to them.  Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or
Master Card directly for verification of their conversation..
The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as
they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give
the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit;
however, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases
you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to
actually file a fraud report.
What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a
'Jason Richardson of MasterCard' with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA
Scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up!  We filed a police
report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of
these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this
scam is happening. I dealt with a similar situation this morning, with the
caller telling me that $3,097 had been charged to my account for plane
tickets to Spain , and so on through the above routine.
It appears that this Is a very active scam, and evidently quite successful.
Oh Man, this year is starting off quite well.  I just completed the last of the projects that has been staring at me for months without me doing anything about it.  It was finishing the design guidelines I was working on last summer for one of the historic districts in town.  I sent them to the people who need to comment on them tonight and will be presenting them on Tuesday at the Neighborhood Coalition meeting. I'm sure they are far from perfect, but I think they are pretty good and I'm proud of them.
 I still have a lot of work to do on other things, but they are current projects not past projects.  That's a huge weight off of my shoulders.
George, I am liking Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor.
IN a strange sort of way he has a bit of Peter Davison and David Tennant in him.
THe DVD set at the library does not have the Christmas episode and I am highly disappointed of where Donna returnes to get married and Tennant regenerates into Matt's doctor
I vaguely remember the commercials for that cereal
Bk,
I was watching Hamlet with Olivier today and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was wondering who was your favorite Hamlet interpretation and which other Shakespeare interpretations you have enjoyed?
Not for long...I have to get to work early because I'm taking "Supervisor 101" at work.  Now that I'm a supervisor, I need to know how to be one. ;)
