Title: ANOTHER HUNDRED SHOWTUNES
Post by: bk on January 13, 2011, 02:08:36 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were short and sweet and filled with showtunes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing another hundred showtunes and will be home soon.

TOD: One tribute I would love to see is of the music of Hugh Martin, in particular a few songs from "Make a Wish" as well as "Best Foot Forward" (which I originally typed as "Best Food") and "Look, Ma, I'm Dancing." As much as I have enjoyed the solo albums from Rebecca Luker to Jason Graae, I prefer the multiple artist albums with the likes of Karen Morrow, Debbie Gravitte, Harry Groener and more, each exploring a different dimension of the author's voice.

In the meantime...

It was a very good cruise, and I had a very good time. -Although, I spent the last day and a half at sea with a very queasy head and stomach due to some very rough water and strong winds. Of course, that made my final day of playing, coaching and performing a true test of mind over matter, as well as a test of my overall balance while I somehow managed to play as the ship - and the piano! - rocked back and forth, and sometimes to and fro.

Right now, I'm just waiting up in the Winter Garden - a.k.a. my practice room - until the Orange tags are scheduled to disembark.

In the meantime, time to catch up on things as much as AT&T's intermittent network will allow.

Good morning, all! There's something afoot this morning: I couldn't log on to today's posts for over five minutes. I went to bed last night at 11 and  watched the rerun of the service in Tucson on CNN. I wanted to hear the president's speech, and I thought it was quite moving.

Today, I have a meeting at the McGlinnventory at 11 am, so I will head down to 23rd Street around 10:15 or so. I have no idea how long this meetign will go on, given the executor's predilection to talk. I hope it is profitable and leads to good things. I'll get a chance to see the office's new Mac - we had to buy one since McGlinn's crashed and burned two weeks ago - and discover what Finale scores are on it. I know we have to print out all of Kern's ROBERTA, and I'm hoping we find a few Herbert scores, perhaps a chunk or more of SWEET ADELINE. McGlinn had a predilection for copying scores for which he had no permissions, but that doesn't mean, now that things are happening, that we cannot take advantage of the work.

BK, good news about the show! I guess the moaning about the nine dinner cancellations meant nothing in the scheme of the ubniverse?

Speaking of Hugh Martin, DR JohnG, I'm listening as I type this to the film soundtrack of BEST FOOT FORWARD.

Welcome back, DR Jose!

Thursday morning greetings!  It's a little weird when you've prepared to be away and end up staying home - no newspapers, no meals planned, few phone calls.  Fortunately we didn't stop the mail because Rob is here.  I think Richard and I will go out to lunch today, unless the snowflakes I see out my window get themselves organized into something significant.

DR Ginny, sometimes having a vacation at home can be wonderful. It's my favorite. How's traffic? You and Richard could drive to Yellow Springs or Lebanon for lunch and looking at piles of snow.

I also watched THE GOOD EARTH on TCM afte the memorial.  I always forget how great a film it is.  Louise Rainer is incredible throughout.  Her chat with Robert Osbourne was also fascinating to watch--I wish it was longer than just a half hour.

One album I'd like to see is "The Songs of Roger Edens"...songs he wrote for which he gets little credit/name recognition but which are seared on our memories.

Another would be "Heartbreak" featuring songs in which characters reveal their loves/their anguish/their disappointments in rapturous melodies.

A third would be "Breakout Standards"...songs from great/good/decent/failed shows that refused to die because they're so great.

I suppose we could do a best of recording - we'll see how it goes.  Then again, we may, this year, even do a best-of show - a song or two from each of the shows - that would be fun and if I have the lead time we might be able to record that live.

I also reviewed this new "virtual orchestra" audio BD with the non-native English speaker.  It's of Beethoven's 5 & 6, and all I can say is whatever "reference recording" this guy used to assemble his tracks for the 5th must have been played at 78 rpm.  The opening movement is so insanely fast I still can't quite believe it.

We had some fun chats and as handsome as he was, I could not understand why he never got into the movies. He was just never interested, he said.

Dakota, in answer to your question last evening, my favorite HAMLET is Richard Burton.  It is a totally minimalistic prodcution (Burton wears a black v-neck sweater), but stunning.  A dear friend that used to post on this board sent me a DVD of the Broadway production, which I originally saw back in 1964.

Good Afternoon!

Well... Since I had walked from the subway stop to the cruise terminal to board the Queen Mary 2, I went ahead and walked from the cruise terminal to the subway after I disembarked.  Thankfully, my trek this time was not quite as "adventurous". -Details to follow.

WELCOME HOME, DR JOSE!

I am looking forward to details and photos.

Just found out that my buddy, old time bodybuilder Clarence Ross passed away at age 84 awhile back. Hadn't talked to him in several years, unfortunately, and had been wondering what he was up to.

We had some fun chats and as handsome as he was, I could not understand why he never got into the movies. He was just never interested, he said.

I think I mentioned these before so here there are again.

Songs from all the Alice in Wonderland/looking Glass movies

and songs from plays/movies based on stories from Charles Dicken
Oliver!, Nicholas Nickleby, Mystery of Edwin Drood, Great Expectations, Mr. Quilp etc etc

or just a recording of song from the various versions of A Chrismas Carol

Ditto!

I believe TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL was filmed in SLC.

By the way, did anyone else notice the "cultural" moment last night during the moment of silence?  Those were most likely all LDS folk who stood up to pray--very common in the Mormon faith.  I had to laugh a little as Pres. Obama looked around, started to stand up, and then decided to just sit there.

DR Elmore - traffic seems to be moving fine on Central Avenue.  Yes, I do like at-home vacations, but I'm still a little bummed about not waking up in Charleston, SC, this morning.

I understand, but after Canton, OH, what joys can Charleston provide?

Shrimp 'n' grits!

DR Ron - since we're not going to Charleston this trip, will we be able to get shrimp 'n' grits in Savannah?

And pralines too!

Speaking of anniversaries, January 16 is the anniversary of the day my mother was killed.  It  was the Sunday before Martin Luther King Day.  It only lines ups every seven years or so, but I knew that this year it was that way.  I was dreading putting up my new2011 state calendar, because I knew I would have to stare at it all year.

Surprise, surprise, for the first time in my 28 years with the state, their calendar has an error.  Friday says the 14th, Saturday says the 15th, Sunday says the 14th, and Monday says the 17th.  I get to skip the anniversary this year!

Ok, one more and then I will stop with the sad celebrity deaths.

Actress Nalini Jaywant, who played opposite Ashok Kumar in the Bollywood science fiction film MR X (1957) passed away at her home in Chembur. She was 84. MR X, which spawned at least two sequels, was based on the Invisible Man story.

Nalini Jaywant was a big name in Hindi cinema in the 40s and 50s. Some of her other films included: BAHEN (Sister) 1944, ANOKHA PYAR (1948), SANGAM (1950), RAILWAY PLATFORM (1955), KALPANI (Life Sentence) 1958, and BOMBAY RACE COURSE (1965).

After her husband passed away a few years ago she become increasingly reclusive, according the friends and neighbors, although she did befriend two stray dogs that she kept as her own.

This is what some of our neighbors are speculating re SPIDEY:

Very few of The critics will wait to see it until just before March 15. They will see it and review it earlier.   But chances are  all (or almost all) will go back to review it for the March 15 official opening, and here's the kicker - Bono, Taymor et al will have digested the early reviews and taken those critiques and suggestions into very serious account in readying the show for the March 15th reviews and opening.

EGAD!  SPIDEY DELAYED TO IDES OF MARCH???????

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/13/spider-man-opening-delayed-until-march-15/

It says that it will have previewed longer than any show in Broadway history. I wonder if that includes Beattlemania and Sarva which never had an official opening date set by the producers, but had one made for them by either the League of Broadway Producers or the critics or by some other organization

RE: ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA

I am glad to see that it is the complete 229 minute version of Sergio Leone's vision.

He had a lot of bad luck in the USA where distirbutors cut his films down.
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Once Upon A Time In the West, Duck You Sucker (aka Once Upon a Time...The Revolution aka A Fistful Of Dynamite)

Also amoung the many places it was filmed was Montreal, PQ. I remember when they were filming there

I think Sarava played 75 previews. Long, but that's only about two months.

Don't know if I've talked about this before, but my friend Larry Smith has Parkinsons.  Instead of letting it get him down, he's living life to the fullest.  He's really amazing.  Next June he's going to ride his recumbant bike across the state of South Dakota.  It's going to be filmed for a documentary.   Here's a link to the website with the trailer.  http://kck.st/faTC3H  if you know anyone interested in donating, great, but I'm really posting this just to show you guys what a great attitude Larry has.

No Private Practice tonight. They are re-airing the Off The Map show.

I watched it last night.  I don't need to watch this episode, again.  I'll watch the next couple of episodes, but I'm not quite sold on the series.  Just my 2¢.

Today was a day.  I had to take the library's "Supervisor 101" training.  It was very informative but hopefully I won't have to use the disciplinary information on any of my staff (my staff :D) any time soon.  But they give a lot of support, so that's good.
