Title: HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL
Post by: bk on January 16, 2011, 12:29:37 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were high schoolish and musicalish, and now it is time for you to post until the high school cows come home.  They're currently performing Bye Bye Cowdie.

Yesterday, my sister, niece and I went to Seattle to have breakfast (http://www.cafeflora.com/menus/brunch.pdf) at a local place called Cafe Flora (http://www.cafeflora.com/).  It's my niece's all-time favorite restaurant.  She had the vegan Basic Breakfast, my sister had their blueberry bread French toast (although, it's not on the .pdf menu) and I had the Ranch Colorado Scramble.  It was all quite delish!  We also had lattes and mochas to drink.  This was my sister's latte (I forget what kind she got):

Guess what I'll be doing today. :P

Then, after unloading the purchases at my sister's house, we all went to our parents' house for dinner...although, I was not hungry, yet.  We played Scrabble and I lost!  Then, we all went home.  I watched some TV (most of Miss America ::)) and now am going to bed.

Sunday morning greetings!  Now that it's daylight, I can confirm that Savannah is, indeed, beautiful and later I'll take some pictures to post.

We're up early to drive up to Hilton Head Island to attend church.  Of course, it's not as early as we're usually up on Sundays - we'd be leaving the house about now if we were going to Lima.

Had a very nice impromptu visit with Kevin H. last night. He came over to the apartment for a bit and then we went to dinner at Good Stuff Diner (we have been there before with Amy and Larry and Jose and others of the HHW gang). He then went off to see Phantom of the Opera with Hugh Panaro. Tomorrow he's going to a friend's son's wedding at Chelsea Piers.

Cilla, there are cables (I've seen them at Best Buy) that plug into the USB ports and they help you transfer your setting and programs from one computer to another. I've never used them but they are supposed to be fairly easy to use. You don't need the program discs, etc. just the cable.

Good morning, all! Last night I had a long dream about driving around Middletown, Ohio, following a huge storm, looking for Christmas gifts, tracking down an old friend, and arguing with my mother. I haven't dreamed about her in years, but she was in and out of this dream, mostly sitting in the passenger seat since I was driving her old Chrysler. I have no idea of what period of  time this dream occurs: the old friend was from the 1970s, as were the car and the geography, but downtown Middletown was the urban-depressed territory it is today, and shopping was impossible. I remember, too that we were on a deadline to finish Christmas and gifts by midnight before I had to leave. My one clear memory of the dream is getting stuck driving up  a steep hill in Middletown and the steering wheel coming apart in my hands while my mother made one of her "I've been meaning to get that fixed" excuses and the car slid back down the hill as I prayed no one would hit us.

My work marathon continues into today. I will leave shortly for Toyland. I've got about five hours of edits and things to be accomplished and I like to finish up and get home early. Then submit my invoice.

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King day, so I will stay home and spend the entire day getting my tax receipts in order for my accountant. If I work on my taxes two days a week, I'll be ready for him on Feb 3.

I watched Miss America (haven't watched a pageant in a long time). The thing that bugged me most was that they kept changing their clothes. And then they wouldn't remind us what each girl's talent/dress was. How are we supposed to remember? We're supposed to be memorize it all?  I think if they had stayed in the same gown for talent, evening dress and questions it would have been so much easier to remember who was who (since many look similar).

Today there is a marathon in town, which closes many streets and freeway exits/entrances. My DH's usual 6 minute three-mile drive turns into 29 minutes and 14 miles, according to Mapquest. Most people won't even bother trying to come to church today. It is practically impossible.

Last night, I finished watching BASIL DEARDEN'S LONDON UNDERGROUND, the new 4-movie set from Criterion.

Good writing, direction and fine performances from actors who knew how to speak in a way that the audience could understand what they were saying.  [Is that a lost art?]

The only problem with the movies is that they are fifty years or more old, and they deal with issues like racism and homophobia in ways that are very outdated in today's world.

That aside, all four movies employ good storytelling, are very entertaining and well worth a look.

For the record, they are SAPPHIRE, THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, VICTIM and ALL NIGHT LONG.

Well... There was at least one if not two "unfortunate" outfits yesterday. Alas, they were owned by the same young girl.  Thankfully, the young girl's mother only presented them as an option for what her daughter was going to wear for today's audition panels.  And, even more thankfully, the teacher very kindly suggested that her daughter did not need to wear a "costume" - rather costumes (one for each song) - today. ;)

DR elmore - I have a few questions about "Naughty Marietta" to ask you.  -Mainly in regards to the song - and the performance practice, tradition - of "It's Very Soft For Simon" (or "It's Very Soft for Silas").  A friend of mine somehow selected the song for a competition, and let's just say that we're having some "issues" with its presentation.

I was surprised when I approached the TKTS discount theatre booth at about 12:30 and saw almost no line.  I soon found out why--there were only a few Broadway shows listed (lots of off-Broadway, though).

I decided to see The Fantastics yesterday afternoon.  I had seen it about 30 years ago so it was almost like seeing it for the first time.  It was very entertaining and it helps when most of the songs are familiar (I have to say partially due to Ms. Streisand, who recorded I Can See It  and Much More, songs which I probably would otherwise have never heard).

As DR Ben mentioned, I visited him and Ant after the show and went for a very nice dinner in their neighborhood.

Their Christmas tree is still up and is very nicely decorated with lots of ornaments, many of which have special significance.

Ben and Anthony are the most hospitable hosts and even gave me a present:  some movie stills of the aforementioned Barbra in Hello, Dolly!  How nice was that!

Even though I have seen Phantom of the Opera many times, I had never seen it with Hugh Panaro, so I got a nosebleed seat (last row of the balcony) for last night's performance.    He was really great (of course my favorite Phantom was in the Las Vegas production)--but great, nonetheless!

I had met Mr Panaro a couple of years ago--he appeared as a guest artist/mentor at a local high school. There was a program open to the public--an interview, Q&A and he sang three songs.  Here's one of them:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBoKoxy_v-Y

He signed autographs and posed for pictures after the high school show and couldn't have been nicer.  I brought the picture of him and me last night for him to autograph, waited a the stage door with about 8 other people, only to find out he had left through another door!

When I'm in NYC, it's my policy to see a show whenever possible, so I'm off to Mary Poppins.  I have seen it before, but didn't have a very good seat.

It's back on for a minute...ok,  So, I went to hook up the new computer today and realized it didn't have the right sort of printer port.  The old kind.  Anyway, Edith's computer has to hook into printer copier etc that we have.  It's an upscale one that I got used a few years ago, but it's still working and does everything we need. SO, I returned the computer and now have to do some shopping and see whether it's better to get a computer made with the port or to get a nice laser printer and use the copier as a stand  alone copier.

I should have known I was going the wrong way when Sherlock refused to follow me.

I've been exploring a fairly new trail where I usually hike.  Yesterday I went up farther than I've previously gone and the reason I was upset I left my camera at home.  On the way back down I past the right turn I had wanted to take which would have circled around & avoided the steep section straight down.  Not realizing I had missed it I turned right onto what I thought was the trail.  It was the trail, the same section I began at & I should have turned left to eventually leave the trails.  Lazy boy doesn't not like to repeat the same sections of a trail especially if he knows I will eventually turn around.  While I hiked up the wrong way he sat and waited for me. ;D

Susannah York has died at the age of 72.
Loved her version of "Jane Eyre" with George C. Scott.

OK, so the five things they hated are sad indeed:

From BroadwayWorld.com:

Well, the major critics haven't gone in (yet) but MTV has now posted their review of SPIDER-MAN: Turn Off the Dark, in two parts. The first, entitled "Five Things We Liked" includes the Set Design, The Costumes, The Aerial Work, It's Family Friendly and 'Splash Page' the show's opening number.

Part Two is "Five Things We Hated" and that list included The Story, The Acting, The Music, The Changes and The Difficulties.

We've been back from Hilton Head for a couple of hours, but the hotel internet was down.  I took a nap and now it seems to be fine.

We were a little late for the church service, due to some navigational issues at both ends of the trip, but Fr. Chris was understanding and very welcoming.  Richard and I explored the island a bit and had lunch at Harbortown - he had a broiled seafood assortment and I had a broiled salmon kebob.  We shared a small slice of key lime pie and then took a walk around the harbor.

Gosh, there hasn't been a sighting of a cougar since December & the bears are hibernating. ;)

I shouldn't be able to get lost for long.  All trails eventually lead down where I can find my way again.  They also all lead up where I know my way except I would then be at the wrong parking area.

I've written a little over six pages today and will write at least three or four more later - just started a new chapter and am more than halfway through the book now.  I wrote one really nice sequence of just prose - there tends to be a lot of dialogue in these books, so it was fun to just write three pages with none.  And I solved one thing that I needed to solve, a set up to something that I think is really very clever.  We'll see how it plays out, but I got the fun idea in the shower this morning - all the good ideas for this book have come when showering.

"Sons of Anarchy" star Katey Sagal snagged the best actress in a dramatic TV series award, her first Golden Globe win after being up for an award five times before. She was first given a Globe nod for playing Peggy Bundy on "Married with Children." She's shocked...but prepared, ha!

No need for spoilers.  The Golden Globes are live in all parts of the country.

I'm really glad I have tomorrow off. The weather is going to be crappy - rain, sleet then snow - and I haven't done anything around the house.  SO, I'm going to clean , and cook, something really good for dinner.

I personally would have given one of the detectives on THE CLOSER the award over Colfe.  Were they even nominated?

George, was your breakfast vegetarian, meaty, or vegan?

Vegetarian...I had real eggs and cheesy grits.  The chili over the eggs was meatless and very good.

They throw all of the supporting people together.

Is anyone watching the Globes tonight?

I am.  I got home after it started. though.  I went to my sister's to help attach a shoe cabinet to a wall (she put it together!) but her baseboard (it's about 5½ inches tall) is too tall for the cabinet to fit over it, so we had to put 1-inch cut dowels under the front legs so that it would clear the baseboard.  Here's a picture of the cabinet.  Notice how it only has legs in the front:

KevinH, I'm envious. I love those trips to New York where you cram in as many shows as you can. I saw Hugh Panero on one such trip, but it was in "Side Show."

I love those trips too.  I need to plan out my trips for the year.   I'm planning to go to DC in May to see A TIME TO KILL.  Rupert is adapting it from the book for the stage.   I missed his last two shows in San Diego, so have decided I will make it to DC.  It's actually a lot cheaper and easier to get there from here than it is to go to San Diego

I'm going to DC in May also but we will be seeing Follies at the Kennedy Center with Larry's close personal friends, Danny Burstein and Ron Raines (they are in the show, we won't be seeing the show with them)
Have the tickets for that gone on sale yet?
