Good morning, all! I love my new modem. Perhaps this has been the problem for the past several months with computer speed and other problems?

Last night was another weird dream: THREEPENNY OPERA in Finkelman Auditorium in Middletown, OH, and I was falling out of the balcony. Oy. And this was odd because there is no balcony for the Finkelman Auditorium as I recall.

I have to go outside and check the storm damage, although it doesn't seem too dreadful from the window; I have an editorial date with Mr Skip Kennon at 1 pm. If it's awful, we'll cancel, but the City may be easily to get about today. We'll see. I also need to call my barber Joe and set up a date for tomorrow morning.

BK, why don't you do a recording of the act with Linda and Greg? That way, DR MBarnum will buy it. We haven't had a good Steve-Eydie album in years, and this might be the next team.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday Wishes to Kerry and to Donald !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A layer of ice to scrape off the windshield and door windows on my car this morning, but otherwise my morning commute was uneventful.

The way they were layering it on last night on the news, I wasn't sure if this snow/ice/rain storm was real or an upcoming NBC TV miniseries event.

Today is the 152nd birthday of Victor Herbert.

I hope some of you will find a moment to listen to a favorite Victor Herbert selection, instrumental or vocal. My choice will be "Barney O'Flynn" from BABES IN TOYLAND, which I believe has one of Glen MacDonough's better lyrics and Herbert writing in his best nationalistic styles.

I think I will venture to the post office and check out the elements.

The "Catch Me If You Can" website has full recordings of four songs from the show with Kerry Butler, Tom Wopat and more. I listened then last night and liked the music. I wasn't quite as taken with the lyrics, but maybe they'll improve on second hearing.

I watched WE'RE NO ANGELS last night, the Humphrey Bogart version.

The movie has a very charming song in it, "Sentimental Moments".  It's by (music) Frederick Hollander and (lyrics) by Ralph Freed.

I've been humming it all morning.

Does anybody know i this song has ever been recorded and, if so, where I might get a copy?

Thanks.

DR Jane re: the swimming lanes. There is slow, medium and fast. Truthfully some of the people in the slow lane can barely swim. So i sort of understand why some people who can actually swim go in the medium lane. They are probably a tiny bit better than the people in the slow lane.

My real complaint is that they don't show any conern for those around them. For instance when I swim in the fast lane (i usually have to or go insane) I always make sure i go behind the fast people. I don't want to slow them down.

But these slow swimmers in the medium lane. They are completely unaware of those around them. For instance, yesterday I was waiting to swim because the person in front of me was too slow (so i had to wait till they were 3/4 of the way across). And this slow swimmer just goes ahead of me without stopping to ask if it was okay.  Umm if i'm waiting for a few seconds for the person ahead do i then really want to go behind this even slower person?

Protocol is that you wait your turn. And if you want to go ahead you ask.

Been having major stress and trauma because of the ex-partner and the website, which he took down last night. Hopefully, it will get fix tonight. In the meantime, if you have an e-mail to send me, try johngriffin0928@yahoo.com.

The "Catch Me If You Can" website has full recordings of four songs from the show with Kerry Butler, Tom Wopat and more. I listened then last night and liked the music. I wasn't quite as taken with the lyrics, but maybe they'll improve on second hearing.

I enjoyed the show when it played in Seattle in its pre-Broadway run. :)

Too bad there isn't someone in charge to remind people of proper etiquette.  I would be as frustrated as you are.

Well actually there are 2 lifeguards there. One on the chair and one who stands at the end who you can ask for help.

The first time this happened (that someone was swimming so slowly) i asked the lifeguard and he said he would say something. But then he said he would watch us all swim just to be sure. And afterwards he decided that I should move to the fast lane.

Sometimes that is okay (I still find it unfair to the other medium swimmers). But I didn't want to go to the fastlane yesterday.

I'm looking forward to it. I've heard great things. It's at the Mitizi Newhouse, a small Off-Broadway theatre. It's supposed to move to Broadway next season (there are no theatres available for the end of this season) but I want to see it now because there is no guarantee that the cast will be the same and it will be a different show in a bigger theatre.

My advice:  print receipts as you go.  Makes it much easier (at least for me).  I also started using an Excel spreadsheet several years ago to track all of my expenses and it makes tax prep a breeze every year.

The weather is really gruesome here tonight - it's been raining hard for several hours and it's freezing on the pavement, trees, power lines.  Now the wind is picking up and we hear that there's a huge power outage in town to the east and south of us.  If I disappear suddenly, you'll know why.

One of the best loved local TV newscasters has been battling a recuring brain tumor for the last 12 years.  She has been off the news for several months now, because the tumor has returned.
Tomorrow she goes in for her sixth brain surgery.  Today she appeared in an interview of the news and we got to see the effect the tumor has had on her face.

If anyone can spare some health vibes (and / or prayers), her name is Kathi Goertzen.

No,  I don't think so.  I would think that eating vegetables in the form of meat would remind one of why they stopped eating meat.

I see that PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT (THE MUSICAL) is featuring among its songs - I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER.

Have we ever had two musicals running on Broadway, at the same, featuring the same song?

Actually, yes. In 1905. A song was written in 1904 for the spring tour of BABES IN TOYLAND called "Beatrice Barefacts," but the writers liked the song so much, they put it into IT HAPPENED IN NORDLAND which opened in late 1904. In January 1905, BABES IN TOYLAND returned to the Majestic Theatre at Broadway and 59th Street for several weeks of its tour. During that period, audiences could hear Mabel Barrison and Gus Pixley sing it in BABES IN TOYLAND or go to IT HAPPENED IN NORDLAND and hear it performed by Lew Fields and Marie Cahill.

I also ended up at Lincoln Center tonight, although at Avery Fisher Hall for the New York Philharmonic.  -Apparently tonight's weather caused a lot of cancellations which resulted in a lot of "paper" being given out.

I love pickled beets.

I like pickled beets too. -Especially when they're topped with horseradish cream.

I've actually wondered about that from time to time too. There are some really nice vegetarian restaurants here in NYC, however, I do find it a bit strange when the featured dishes are "mock" versions of beef, chicken and pork. -Especially when some of the restaurants list their ethical(?) reasons for being vegetarian. I'd rather have a dish called "grilled mushroom-and-nut patty" rather than "tastes like beef".

Re:  vegetarians and "fake" meat.  Soy products are not vegetables.  They are legumes, they replace the protein part of your diet.  When you eat meat, the bulk of the protein you are ingesting is actually second hand, from the legumes and other proteins the cattle or whatever has consumed.

Brussels sprouts have a completely different texture and taste when roasted with olive oil, TCB.

Of course, my favorite way to prepare Brussels sprouts is to peel off a good number or leaves, douse them in olive oil, and then roast them until crispy... Then finish them off with a good dash of salt... And browned butter... And bacon fat.  ::)

We ended up with 8 grad student and 17 local films.  They are all shorts, some very short, but this should be enough to put together a nice showing for the public.  It's actually a total of 2:37:14 plus a 17 min over time limit film.  I haven't watched them as I had planned, but I'm judging so I'll see them when they are complied on a couple disks. Much easier to view that way.

Time to get some sleep.  Must shovel out and get to work by 8:30.   The schools are 2 hours late because of the wind chills, but I still need to get to court by 9:00

Rehearsal was fun, then I ran to get the book Xeroxed, and then I went to Shelly Markham's birthday dinner at the Daily Grill and now I am home and totally zonked.
