Well, you've read the notes, the notes were travelin', and now it is time for you to post until the travelin' cows come home.

Last night, I worked concessions for the national tour of A Chorus Line.  I was a little sad because, although I had requested to usher for the show, I was assigned to work concessions.  The problem with that is that you don't get to see the very beginning of the show because you have to put things away when the show starts before you can go in to watch, and then if there's an intermission, you have to leave early to set up the concessions area again, and then stay after the second act starts to completely clean up everything.  HOWEVER, A Chorus Line doesn't have an intermission (which means not a lot of pre-show sales) and the head concessionaire, Vicki, said that was could just quickly put things into the kitchen area and do the more thorough cleaning after the show was over.  We got to see the entire show!

As for the show itself, it was very good!  I stood at the back of the orchestra level (which only has rows A-L, so it's not that far away from the stage).  All the performers had very good voices and were very good dancers and actors.  The audience of over 800 certainly enjoyed it.  A very good time was had by all. :D

Good morning, all! Another night of weird dreams: the last one had me in the hospital awaiting surgery and two battling doctors. I've now forgotten the one that woke me at 4:30am but it was equally strange.

Today, I have a lot of errands to run of various and sundry nature, hopefully ending at the Lincoln Center NYPL for more historic newspaper research.

Berlin songs: I think my faves are "It's A Lovely Day Today" and "Change Partners and Dance," but it's hard to choose. I think my least faves are from "Call Me Madam": "The Ocarina" and "Marrying For Love," and all of "Mr President."

I worked on that production for Encores! I think I may have scored those ocarinas for that production. I have a memory of the ocarina players being difficult to deal with, and I remember that I futzed with the dance music to "Something to Dance about" as well.

I love Tyne Daly, and I think she's great on the up-tempo songs. I wish she could sing on pitch for the ballads. She doesn't knpw about breath support. I have to say that she was the best thing in the 1998 Carnegie Hall performance of JUBILEE; absolutely fantastic!

About two weeks ago, I watched JULIE & JULIA again on cable and once again fell head over heels in love with the Julia Child portion of the movie.  So much, in fact, that my current read is Julia Child's (and nephew Alex Prud'Homme's) MY LIFE IN FRANCE.  The book is just as delightful as the film.  As I read it I can't help to hear every word in Child's (or Streep's Child's) loopy voice.  The only difficult part is when she describes the food and her meals and I'm reading on an empty stomach.  Ohhhhh....

I might at a later date look for the book that contains husband Paul Child's correspondance with his brother Charlie.  Paul Child is an interesting person in his own right.

It's cold outside, although I think the weather has warmed up since my trek downtown.

I saw Jo and Emily Loesser, both of whom I love a great deal, and I learned at the NYPL a bit more about a comedy from 1924, THE MERRY WIVES OF GOTHAM, which starred Laura Hope Crews as an Irish washerwoman living in shantytown and Grace George as a Park Avenue socialite in the year 1873. Part of the charm of the play is that the ladies, who have a friendly relationship, never learn that they are actually sisters separated in Ireland 40 years earlier. Victor Herbert wrote a glorious Irish song, "Heart O'Mine," for the comedy. It was sung by Mary Ellis, who one year later became a star playing the title role in the operetta ROSE-MARIE.

Hi everyone!   I'm still without cable, landline phone and internet at home, so I'm writing on my lunch hour at work.

There's been little progress in the cleanup of the room where the fire occurred (the storage room for all the residents); needless to say, all my belongings were destroyed.  I didn't have a lot of stuff down there, luckily.

In the meantime, I'm leaving for LA in the morning.  I'm going to Musicares (a charity attached to the Grammy Awards organization).  My fave female vocalist, Barbra Streisand, is being honored and promises to sing at the end of the evening.  I'm meeting several friends and am really looking forward to the show.

I hope to be back soon--hope everyone's doing well.  Sorry I haven't had time to read all the posts.

Well...this sounds like a show to see:  Original Version of Grease, Grittier and Raunchier Than You Know, Will Get Production Where It All Began (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/147499-Original-Version-of-Grease-Grittier-and-Raunchier-Than-You-Know-Will-Get-Production-Where-It-All-Began)!

Here's how ATC bills the show: "Chicago. 1959. Before two movies and three Broadway productions, summer lovin' happened on Lake Michigan and the Pink Ladies were a group of working class outsiders living on Chicago's Northwest Side. Including never-before-heard music, lyrics and scenes, author Jim Jacobs teams up with artistic director PJ Paparelli and choreographer Jim Corti to bring to life for the first time since 1971 the original R-Rated version of the world’s most famous movie musical."

Class work is getting weirder. The teacher said it was OK that I miss the session she didn't tell me about until it was too late on Monday, but then she hasn't told me about anything else since and she's made assignments, which I've managed to do without/despite her. It's OK to ostracize me, but don't be so, well, third grade about it. This is supposed to be grad school. And there are only six or seven of us students.

Also, what are your favorite Irving Berlin classics?  Very important.

BK, I had this idea years ago to do "I Wonder Why/You're Just In Love" (from Call Me Madam), and then do "Old Fashioned Wedding" (from Annie Get Your Gun) and THEN sing the two (four?) songs at the same time as a double duet, like "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through" from Follies.  They have the same chord progressions and fit together almost perfectly.  I think the endings would need to be adjusted, but for people (like me) who love that counterpoint stuff, it'd be a heck of a lot of fun!  And no one has probably EVER done this, so it'd be a real surprise!

That's my suggestion. :)

This weather can really do that to you!

DR KevinH, have a wonderful time and a safe trip!

DITTO!

My neighbor next to me has new tenants above him. They're driving him crazy. He thinks the apartment is not being used as a residence but as an internet company.

But you'd be surprised. I wanted to pick a book like "Orphans Preferred" about the history of the Pony Express. I owned a copy, but the library only had two and the book was out of print.

Somebody else wanted a book that the library had no copies of.

But, boy, do they ever have copies of books like "Cold Mountain" and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" and other titles that we wouldn't go near.

Kindle, that's crazy.  A few people in my group who have read the discussion books on e-readers prefer not to do so in the future.  They said it is easier to mark pages & flip back & forth for noting points of discussion.

Great shot of Sherlock!

Miss Molly is doing well.  She's extremely restless, though.  Her appetite is great.  When I climbed into the whirlpool a little while ago, she fell asleep in that bathroom for about a half an hour. First real rest she had since coming home.  Although, when we first got home, after she had her lunch and a couple of walks, she laid against my chest and caught some shut-eye while being petted.

Her sutures don't look like they're going to be problematic; she hasn't once tried to lick them, either.

Sorry, I did it over two years ago at the suggestion of BK's close personal acquaintance Tina Paradiso, who had been doing it for years in cabarets.

After I was done running my errands, I decided to check to see how long the rush ticket line was for tonight's performance of Nixon in China at The Met.  To my surprise, there were only about 20 people in line at 2:00pm... And since I happened to have a book in my bag... Well...

Earlier tonight, I saw Nixon in China at The Metropolitan Opera.

I had seen the original production back in 1987 at The Kennedy Center, and had watched the PBS broadcast a number of times. Tonight it was like I remembered everything and nothing at the same time. John Adams was on the podium, and the clarity and drive he brought to the score - his own score - was amazing.  James Maddalena has only gotten better as Nixon, and the rest of the cast was quite good too. -Now I'm wondering if I still have my VHS of the PBS broadcast somewhere in one of my storage boxes.

Thanks everyone for the vibes yesterday! I got home from tech rehearsal just in time to change and go back with my mom and Naz, Greg and my best pal, Jan.

I think Jose would have had a great time with all of the foods prepared by the top Atlanta chefs...Kevin Rathbun et al. Not only did they have wine pairings but also special cocktails. My favorite: Mint Jew-lips!

There was a crowd of over 3,000 to see the film and I sat by Shawn Green, one of the stars of our film (a gorgeous hunk, if you like that sort of thing...) and a super nice guy. There were 75 friends and family that I counted, and maybe more I didn't know about, and 2 dozen of them joined us for beers afterwards. It was great to watch the film with the folks who worked on it, especially my editing teammate. We're both cranking out stuff for Chik-Fil-A right now, so I will probably be rather E&T until the 18th, when they're due. I feel like such a whore, but I need the $$!

DR Jose will be glad to know that my piano is getting tuned tomorrow. I'm trying a new guy; he's the nephew of the guy who used to tune it for me back in the 70's. He loves the Knight piano and is psyched about working on it.
