Well, you've read the notes, the notes had an affair and they remembered it, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having an affair to MOOmember.

Last night, I went to a wonderful production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and I was one of the people called up from the audience!  Actually, the director (whom I've known since 1989...and she was about 15 years old) asked if it was okay if they called me up, so I said yes.  I was the first audience member to be called on to spell and I got the spelling wrong!  The word sounded like "dangy," but it's spelled "dengue."  I've never heard of it, so I was out.

The other three people who were from the audience did much better.  And the guy who played the vice principle was quick with the jokes and improves and very funny.  All the "kids" were very good and the audience loved the show.

Weirdest album? There are so many. But one true oddity was an original Catskill, N.Y., cast recording of a local musical about silkworms or earthworms or some kind of insect. It never went further than the high school, except to the recording studio.

Good morning, all! Around 10 pm last night Joshie called me and changed my plans for today: I was going to go to City Center and begin the work on WHERE'S CHARLEY?, but he will be stuck at his apartment waiting for the moving cartons to arrive. So, tomorrow I will go to City Center, and today I will go to NYPL.

In 1998, when the Kennedy Center did their one attempt at a series like Encores!, WHERE'S CHARLEY? was the final show (August, 1998, as I recall). I spent about 3 months at the Loesser office putting the orchestra parts of the show into full score and found many many errors. We believed that the DC production would provide us with a set of corrected masters for future productions, but tight schedules, inexperienced interns, etc. can wreak havoc with good intentions.

So, for twelve years, the Loesser office has had a full score for WHERE'S CHARLEY? in my hand, with all problems and copy errors marked. This is the score that Encores! is working from, and I'm acting as consultant and aid in getting a lot of the corrections into the parts they are using. I'm hoping this production will lead to a recording as well as a new rental edition of the show.

BK, Ethel Waters had three songs in AS THOUSANDS CHEER: "Suppertine," "Harlem On My Mind," and "Heat Wave." Perhaps Miss Allen could do one of the others?

I once found in a used LP store a recorsing of some community theatre production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC from Denver (?) or some city in the west. The orchestra wasn't bad but the cast has delusions of adequacy. I don't know where the LP is now, but it was truly bizarre.

Re: the library having to have as many copies as book club members.

I find that rule crazy!

You'd think at least one member might order the book or buy it second hand. And really couldn't people share a library copy?  The only books most libraries would have that many copies of would be huge blockbusters.  But in many cases those books have long waiting lists!

I think that the two most unusual LPs I ever bought would be:

Robert Gorl: NIGHT FULL OF TENSION. Gorl had a semi hit song that played on MTV a lot back in the 1980s. I liked it, so I bought the album. He is German (I think) and the songs are all sort of odd...but I liked them. Or maybe I just thought he was cute.  8)

the other unusual album was THE COCONUTS. How could I resist an LP cover like this!

Of course The Coconuts were part of Kid Creole and the Coconuts, but they evidently decided to do an album of their own. Don't know how well it did, but it is fun.

She didn't even have to wear a "Cone of Shame," since she would be having 24 hour supervision.

I've been taking her outside almost every half hour, she's almost always sitting by the door waiting for the leash.

This morning, I took her for a long, long walk - following a car ride - in hopes that she will settle a bit while I'm doing my laundry.

She slept with me, on my bed, last night, cuddled up against my chest, with one ear over my heart.

When it did, two arrived at the same time, meaning that one was moving very slowly along its route and the other had caught up with it. Where the hell are the MTA monitors?

My niece Jadie (the one who has the fever) is 1 yr 9 months. She's starting to say more words. And just last week she came up with her own name for me. My other niece calls me "Auntie". But i guess that was too hard. For some reason she calls me Naa-naa. And she screams it whenever she can't find me. It's pretty funny.

Is it funny if you are shopping in a store ;)

That's not happened yet. She's only been saying it for 2 weeks.

She screams out for my mom too yelling "Bu-ba" at the top of her lungs. And if you leave the room and she wants to find you she yells it out. But i haven't heard her do that in public (and she's been saying that for a while). Maybe she's shy in public.

Actually, DR Rodzinski would probably kill for that album, JRand. He has a very nice collection of weird vintage LP/covers. I sent him some Marcy albums once upon a time.

LOL TCB. I don't think it was known during his Dr. Kildare years.

We were in our early twenties when my parents gave us tickets to see him in Cyrano of Bergerac & a co-worker said she couldn't watch him in a romantic role.  My response is "it is called acting".  He was terrific.  This was the role he did after his return from studying in England.

Where's Jose today? I had the worst ice cream in my entire life and thought he'd appreciate the horror story. It was from a Cold Stone Creamery and it was billed as cinnamon. It turned out to cinnamon roll instead. That meant the sugar level was on shrill to get the notion of the frosting in there. But they also tried to get the dough flavor and ended up with this odd texture that made you want to spit it out. Seriously, it reminded me of dried jellyfish. It made me want to rush home and cleanse my mouth with some of the organic butter pecan I have in the freezer.

I did go to Fred's memorial service and left the GLBT Center on 13th Street in a real emotional state. There were some wonderful speakers, friends of Fred's from college, grade school, all the gay causes he worked on from the 1960s to his death, a former student from the Harvey Milk School, where Fred was the first teacher, a director of Hettrick Martin, the foundation supporting the school's creation, his brother Richard who's seven years older than Fred, and friends from the Chrus. Fred had planned this service, so he wanted two of my arrangements performed. "America the Beautiful" proved too difficult to be prepared in two rehearsals so a tape was played from its first performance from 1985. They did sing live my arrangement of the Cryer-Ford "Old Friend."

So, while the Chorus was singing this arrangement, standng in front of the Chorus' AIDS Quilt with 147 stars, each star bearing the name of one of the 147  members to die of AIDS, all these memories of friends who were dead pr no longer in touch with the Chorus, many of whom sang my arrangements in my years arranging for the Chorus from 1980 to 1998, hit me hard and I wept through the entire memorial service. At the end, a video collage of Fred's life included footage of dead friends like Jimmy Festa, who worked at City Opera, or Richard Halpern who was a former actor, and I had to leave. I was in no mood to socialize; I was wiped out and wanted to get home for a good cry.

Still, it was truly a beautiful event.

In other news...

The New York Philharmonic open rehearsal this morning was wonderful.  It started off with Beethoven's Piano Concerto, No. 3.  Good soloist, good orchestral support.  It wasn't as exciting as I usually like it, but I also sensed that the conductor and the soloist weren't exactly on the same page in regards to the interpretation and overall "feel".  However, the Shostakovich Fifth Symphony was a total knockout.  It was a true showcase of the musicianship of the Phil's players, as well as the talents of the young - 30 years old - guest conductor.

After the rehearsal, I hung out with some friends who happened to be there too, and we watched some of the people going in and out of the tents at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week which started up today. -It's set up at Lincoln Center. -Well, we watched there outfits.  One gentleman - at least we think it was a man - was wearing various pieces made out of fur, with each piece made out of a different type and color of fur. Leggings, "shorts", shirt, jacket and a hat that was finished off with two tails of some sort dangling off of it.  We called him "Yeti".

One friend broke up with his boyfriend.
Another friend had a major technological breakdown today. Of course, she was gearing up for a multi-media presentation tomorrow.
Yet another friend become suddenly and violently ill at work. He was able to hop in a cab and make it back to his apartment, but that was not before he had "lost his cookies" in the middle of the restaurant where he works... As the lunch shift was finishing up.
And then my landlord texted(!?!?) me to say that it looks like they're going to sell the building.

DR elmore - I had a similar thing happen to me last night before Nixon in China.  The opera was first introduced to me by my dear friend, Mark Gregory, who died of AIDS a couple of years ago. -I've spoken about him before here on HHW.  As we were entering the opera house last night, I remembered how Mark was a supernumerary in the Kennedy Center production... That he had had a viewing party when PBS broadcast the Houston production... And how, after he had surveyed the guests in attendance, he told me that most of the men in that room would be dead in ten years time.  Sadly, that was more a statement of fact than a prediction. I just wished he had been able to sit next to me last night.

I was fine, emotionally speaking, during the opera.  But as I walked from Lincoln Center down to Columbus Circle, well... I had to walk around the block a few times... :-\
