TOD:

DVD - Queen Kelly a 1928 silent film with Gloria Swanson directed by E.V. Stroheim.  It was never really finished, but this has most of the footage and some stills and titles to cover the rest.  I guess my main problem with the film is that the Prince falls madly in love with beautiful Gloria the moment he sees her (she is an orphan in a convent) - and Gloria is the same horse-faced dog she always was.

CD - Earth VS the Spider, again

Looking forward to the new release that is to be announced tonight!

Good morning, all! I've another trek to Toyland this morning to pick up more books. Beyond that. there's little on the agenda but work here: I've got to finish a bar count for Victor Herbert's Irish Rebellion operetta EILEEN, I have five CDs of 102 Herbert songs to listen to, I've got personal items from Toyland to put away, and thay will be most of my weekend.

I've also got a dinner date tonight with two friends I never see enough of, an Encores! luncheon tomorrow that I might miss, because of the Toyland hiatus. On Sunday, I've got a party for cast and crew after WHERE'S CHARLEY? finishes up.

TOD:
   DVD: The Netflix items sit here. Oy!
   CD: A lot of Victor Herbert, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway, Jacques Offenbach and others
   VCR: cheap porn

I can post it now if you all like.  In fact, here it is.  It's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  A wonderful recording.

Kritzerland is proud to present our new limited edition CD:

CARNIVAL
Original London Cast Album
Music and Lyrics by Bob Merrill

LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND

On April 21, 1961, Broadway audiences and critics fell head-over-heels in love with the new musical Carnival.  Produced by David Merrick and adapted from the MGM film Lili by Michael Stewart (from the screenplay by Helen Deutsch, itself adapted from a Paul Gallico short story entitled The Man Who Hated People), the show was directed and choreographed by Gower Champion and had a tuneful and memorable score by Bob Merrill.  The critics raved – in the Daily News, John Chapman wrote that Carnival was “enchantment from the moment the houselights go down.”  And so it was, pure enchantment, despite its darker elements – it ran on Broadway for 719 performances, and had a best-selling original cast recording (which debuted at number one on the Billboard chart) and “Love Makes The World Go Round” became a much-sung song, covered by many of the popular singers of the time.  Carnival was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning two (one for Alberghetti – in a tie with Diahann Carroll – and one for Will Steven Armstrong’s scenic design). The show had a successful national tour, as well.

It was a no-brainer that such a successful show would receive a London production, and so it did in 1963, opening at the Lyric Theater in February, after playing short engagements in Leeds and Glasgow.  Champion’s staging was recreated by his long-time associate, Lucia Victor, and the cast included Sally Logan, Michael Maurel, Bob Harris, Shirley Sands, Francis de Wolff, Reg Lever, along with James Mitchell recreating his Broadway role.   Just prior to opening, the original London cast recording was made, in hopes that the show would repeat the success it had on Broadway.  Alas, that was not to be the case – the show ran only thirty-four performances.  Why London didn’t embrace the show is anyone’s guess.

The London cast album is a delight, and features a few little bits not found on the Broadway cast album.  Merrill’s words and music shine, as do the performances – it’s just a wonderful score, musically and lyrically, and wonderfully presented.  Bob Merrill began his songwriting career in the pop world, writing such hits as “If I Knew You Were Comin’ I’d Have Baked A Cake” (with Al Hoffman and Clem Watts), “Mambo Italiano” (recorded by Rosemary Clooney), and his huge hit novelty song “(How Much Is) That Doggie In The Window.”   He also wrote a chart-topper for Jimmie Rodgers, the infectious “Honeycomb.”  He made his Broadway debut as composer and lyricist with New Girl In Town, a musical version of Eugene O’Neill’s Anna Christie, which starred Gwen Verdon, which was followed by Take Me Along.  He provided lyrics to Jule Styne’s music for the smash hit, Funny Girl, which yielded several songs that would go on to become standards.  As composer/lyricist he also wrote Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Henry, Sweet Henry, and The Prince of Grand Street.  With Styne, he also provided lyrics to Sugar, Prettybelle, and The Red Shoes.

The London cast recording of Carnival was mastered from the original album master tapes housed at EMI in the UK.  Interestingly, some of the song titles are slightly different on the London recording and we’ve opted to use those so that we match the way they were listed on that original LP jacket.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.   The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the first week of May – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I am quite tired; I've spent the afternoon, since I toted home two bags of books from the ruins of Toyland working on a play sequence for the 102 songs, started digging out the music to follow with the discs and it's after 5 pm now.

I was thinking about going to Encores! tonight, but I think I'll stay in and get to bed early, then continue the evacuation of the ruins.

And speaking of Stiles & Drewe...Betty Blue Eyes Is Cameron Mackintosh's First New Musical in Ten Years (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/148901-Betty-Blue-Eyes-Is-Cameron-Mackintoshs-First-New-Musical-in-Ten-Years-Will-More-Follow).

Quote
Based on the film "A Private Function," by Alan Bennett, Betty Blue Eyes focuses on Betty, an adorable pig who is being illegally reared to ensure that local dignitaries can celebrate the Royal Wedding (of Queen Elizabeth II) with a lavish banquet, while the local post-war population make do with Spam.

~~~
Mackintosh admitted that, yes, Betty Blue Eyes is "my first gleaming new musical in over 10 years."
What attracted him to it?
"Well, the score was written by friends of mine, George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, who I've known for 25 years and [who,] of course, did all the terrific new songs for Mary Poppins," he told Playbill.com earlier this year.
An update on my friend who needs the roto-rooter surgery:
It was scheduled for last Monday. My friend had difficulty learning what time he should show up, as hospital staff either didn't know or wouldn't say. After repeated efforts, he learned it was 6 am. He arranged for a friend to drive him to the hospital. He arrived on time, went through all the hoops, and spoke to numerous personnel. He was repeatedly asked about his extreme hoarseness--he had virtually no voice. Each time he explained that it came on when he began the medicine they'd prescribed for him (which he had since stopped taking). Each time they responded with, "You should be OK." He was in a hospital gown (a euphemism, don't you think?) when the anesthesiologist came in, heard him, checked his chest, and nixed the operation due to bronchitis! The operation was postponed for a month. Don't you think someone should have caught this sooner??
Listening to another upcoming release - it was released on CD in the 1980s but has been out of print for over fifteen years now.  I never liked the CD and now I know why - the sequencing is awful and has nothing to do with how the music is actually used in the film.  I recently watched it and even the track titles tell you what the proper order should be and so I've rearranged it in something resembling film sequence (not possible to do, really, because there's about thirty minutes of missing music - which no one seems to have - even though our CD will be close to 65 minutes long as it is, with the inclusion of a couple of bonus tracks.
I decided I was tired of waiting for my movie passes so I called the corporate office again this morning.  I got a human who told me that she was the person who makes the passes and mails them out and no one has told her who won the pass or where to send it.
::)
Quote
She took my name and address and said she will mail it today and it should arrive tomorrow.  She also said she'll make it valid until March 31, 2012.
Finally & good for her for including the entire month!
Sherlock & I walked in the pouring rain this morning.  After we returned home I rushed to get ready to go out again and pick up a friend for a lunch date.  As I was leaving it began snowing alternating with rain.  While I was at lunch Keith attempted to reach me to tell me to get home.  We had several inches of snow on the ground and he was in a white out.  Fortunately, for me not him, I couldn't hear my cell phone as the music in the restaurant was too loud.  He called before my friend asked them to turn the sound down so we could carry on a conversation.  By the time we left the sun was out and the day continues to be beautiful.
I know I'm in the minority on this, but here goes:
I just finished watching BLACK SWAN...and I did not like it.
Yes, the actors are terrific and Natalie certainly deserved the Oscar, though I would have preferred it go to Annette.
Why didn't I like the movie?
Aside from the overly graphic scenes of her self-mutilation, I never really cared about Natalie's character.
She was such a screwed up, lost, weak sister from the very beginning of the movie that I could find no reason to root for her.
Unlike Mickey Rourke in Darren Aronofsky's last film (THE WRESTLER), she never had a chance.
Anyway, for what it's worth, that's my opinion.
After I wrote my last post, I remembered that I had a dinner with put oftown friends at 5:30 in the theatre district. I hauled ass out of here, got to a bank and some money, got an express subway to 42nd Street and was only a few minutes late. After dinner, I walked up to City Center and watched Act one of WHERE'S CHARLEY? backstage. The reviews are amazingly good, and i'm really happy for everyone involved.
Yes, DR TCB, Lord Babberly and his love interest are cut, which makes Charley's role one long switcheroo of disguise. Rob McClure is wonderful as Charley, although I wish Doyle had allowed more of the slapstick between Charley and Spettigue; Ray Bolger and Horace Cooper are really funny in the film with lots of slapstick.
And now, to bed.
I left our production of CHARLEY'S AUNT to do the role of Pickering in MY FAIR LADY.  On my last week as Spettigue, I changed the blocking slightly, in my romance scene with Babberley.  Just before my exit, I grabbbed Babberley, bent him backwards, and planted a lip lick on him.  The audience went crazy.
Tonight the Vixter and I went to see a production of Cabaret at a local Equity theatre.  We ended up in the second row in a nearly sold out house.
The show was extremely well acted and sung - the supporting actors made up the orchestra and they could PLAY!
It provoked a deep conversation on the way home
