Title: BUCKLE AND SWASH
Post by: bk on March 26, 2011, 11:36:17 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes both buckled and swashed, not necessarily in that order, and now it is time for you to post until the buckling and swashing cows come home.

Thanks to everyone for the hugs and the vibes.  Can't say this is easy, but it's been a hell of a lot easier knowing I have people in my life that care.  The ex, I'm afraid, doesn't have that network of friends.  I'm feeling sorry for him.

And now you'll understand the title of today's notes - as promised, our in advance notice for you dear readers only.  You know the drill - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73) paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  So, this is a wonderful, wonderful score.

Kritzerland is proud to present a new world premiere limited edition soundtrack:

PIRATES
Music Composed by Philippe Sarde

“You son of a double-eyed whore from the reeking gutters of Rotterdam!”

Roman Polanski had long wanted to make a pirate film; a grand, lush, fun pirate film like those he’d seen as a child.  He and collaborator Gerard Brach (with whom Polanski had collaborated on Repulsion, Cul-de-Sac, The Fearless Vampire Killers, What?, The Tenant, Tess, and others that would come later), wrote the script after Polanski had finished with Chinatown.  Originally slated to star Jack Nicholson and Polanski himself, the film would not be made until a decade later, this time with Walter Matthau in the lead.

Pirates premiered at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival, after which it opened in the United States to critical disdain and box-office apathy.  Grossing only two million dollars, the film was simply not what audiences of the day wanted and it disappeared quickly.  Even so, it did manage to pick up one Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design (Anthony Powell).   It vanished for a while, but, thanks to home video and cable showings, over the years people have come to appreciate its many pleasures, including Matthau’s terrific performance, the sometimes-mordant black humor, wonderful action scenes, gorgeous visuals (photography by Witold Sobocinski), and Polanski’s excellent and robust direction.  And, above all, the wonderful, colorful, lush, exciting, and altogether beautiful score of Philippe Sarde.

Polanski had begun what would be a fruitful collaboration with Sarde on The Tenant, which was followed by Sarde’s incandescent score for Tess (for which Sarde was nominated for an Academy Award) and then Pirates.  Born in 1945, Philippe Sarde began scoring films in 1970, and from then on became one of France’s busiest and best composers.  Right from the get-go the Sarde sound was instantly recognizable – his wonderful gift for memorable and melodic themes, his ability to do just about any genre, but in his own unique style.  His film scores throughout the 1970s were some of that decades’ best.  Soon thereafter, Hollywood discovered him, and he did many terrific scores for US films, such as Ghost Story, The Manhattan Project, Lovesick, Lord of the Flies, Music Box, along with an impressive list of French films and films from other countries

About the scoring of the film, Polanski said, “I did not intend to make a spoof and therefore I did not ask Philippe to spoof the music, though we both wanted to make references to the period and the atmosphere of the old Hollywood action flicks.  I wanted a music that would underline certain actions and gags, and yet I didn’t want a “Mickey Mouse” type of score.  I wanted to avoid a caricature.”  Sarde delivered exactly what Polanski wanted and an absolutely brilliant score.

Pirates was originally released on LP and then on CD by Varese Sarabande and that release is long out of print and has become a pricey collector's item.   That release was oddly sequenced, as a quick perusal of the cue titles will tell you.  We were going to leave it that way until we actually arranged the cue titles so that they followed the film’s story, and once we heard that we knew that we wanted to present it as Sarde wrote it.  And interestingly, we later found out that’s exactly how the original LP presented the score – the CD mixed it all up, but if you look at the LP cue order you’ll see it’s all in film order, sans the music that was added for the CD.

The sound has been completely remastered, and additionally we’ve included two bonus cues: the main and end titles as presented in the film, taken from the beautiful-sounding foreign DVD release.

Matey, they don’t seem to write scores like Pirates anymore, so it’s a real treat to have Philippe Sarde’s great swashbuckling music back on CD, sounding better than ever with enough buckle and swash for a dozen films.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the second week of May – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good morning!  Today is the day we dance the Bon Odori.  It's really pretty easy and I think it will be fun.   This is a fair, not a sit down concert so people will be milling around, going to booths, ordering and eating food etc while we perform.  Much less pressure.  I m,ust remember to take a camera though.  We're wearing the robes give by our sister city in Japan.

The robes aren't fancy, well they are more like jackets than robes. They are promotional, we'll take a group photo and send it to Japan for the sister city. I guess that means there will be a phot of me somewhere in a file in Japan, lol

A very active and sort of heated conversation has started up on my criminal defense listserv about THE LINCOLN LAWYER.  I haven't seen it yet, but apparently there are a number of ethical issues and trial issues that don't look good for criminal defesne lawyers.  I think it's a little much to expect the movie to follow all the ethical rules, but some people get all out of shape over it

Nursie gets upset if a film isn't following historical accuracy. History and biography have never been good as dramatizations without dramatic license. Why not the law as well?

I was on a jury around 1986, for a simple armed robbery on a taxi driver, where the defendant, who was caught wearing the victim's hat and leather jacket, was very guilty. The ones who refused to convict - and because of them we were sequestered for two days -  asked the prosecutor after the trial, "where were the DNA tests or fingerprint results?" The attorney's comment: this is a simple robbery trial; you watch too much tv. We can't afford the tests you're asking about."

DR elmore I just added "Unconditional Love" to my NetFlix queue.

It's a mess of a movie, but i found it very funny and the cast quite wonderful. Any movie that ends with the entire cast on the Sally Jesse Raphael Show singing "I Can't Live Without You"along with Barry Manilow is clearly deranged, and I found it quite a hoot.

I think that may have been what I liked about it. It wasn't all cut-and-dried or black-and-white. But I can understand lawyers not liking that, much in the way that I've not liked the way some journalists have been portrayed in movies.

Had to work at a local event yesterday to benefit the local chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier, which exists to help women in the culinary profession. It was called Olives Ole and it featured olive plants for sale, olive oil tastings, olives, etc. I helped cooked and serve a veggie pita that was really quite wonderful. A colorful array of orange and red peppers, Asian eggplant, mushrooms, pattypan squash, yellow squash all on a homemade pita, topped with feta, olives, grilled scallions, olive oil and lemon juice.

Then it was off to the 83rd birthday of a friend who wanted to host a tequila tasting. Eight tequilas, then margaritas, all outdoors, followed by dessert in their wonderful treehouse. Didn't get home until well past midnight, which made getting to church at 8 this morning hard.

I understand exactly how you feel.  Now that they have us doing payroll (which I swore to myself I would never EVER do again) I have only 2 choices--stay and do what I hate or try to move on and maybe not make the pay that I am now.  Considering that I have some nasty habits--like eating and enjoying have a roof over my head, not to mention  2 dogs to support (Lord help me if the treats stopped) I have to stay where I am.  I hate that it seems like I have no say in the matter.  I feel so trapped. :(

I don't know how to tell this to my cold friends but I'm sitting here with all of the windows open and the overhead fan running.  Spring has sprung here in Florida.

But I did hear on the news that we are going to get some heavy rain showers this week because of a cold front going though.  I don't know if that will lower our temps back down into the cold range.

I am just now getting back home -

I went to the 9 AM service - the Vixter slept in today - after the service I took one of our elderly parishioners to Panera for an early lunch.  While there I decided to get my parents the danish ring they so enjoy.  So after driving elderly parishioner home I stop by my folk's house where I was quite surprised to find my niece, who I thought was in Rhode Island, her boy friend, who I thought was in France and my brother who I thought was in Massachusetts  helping my mother unload groceries from the car I thought she was no longer driving

I am apparently the least informed member of my family

If the rich guy resumes you might suggest to him, elmore, that he hires someone who actually knows how to produce an album and NOT be profligate.

Oh goodness!!  I'm not sure to laugh or cry for you.

Had a very good time at the show, actually.  I actually sold some books (I only brought the memoir), sat next to Laura Freas, the widow of artist Kelly Freas, met some nice folks and my hour flew by, like a gazelle reading a lurid paperback, of which there were many.  In fact, this show had more lurid paperbacks than in the past.  I did manage to get one extraordinary item, a real find.  Apparently other dealers either hadn't stopped at this particular table or it escaped their eye, for as soon as I got it I was suddenly the toast of the show, with dealers coming up to me asking to look at it - I probably could have doubled my money.

It was an original script for The Cincinnati Kid.  With the original MGM cover.  What makes it especially interesting and unique are the writer and director credits on that cover: Ring Lardner, Jr. and Sam Peckinpah.  No one has ever actually seen a script with that cover - Peckinpah was fired a few days into filming and replaced by Norman Jewison.  And Terry Southern and Charles Eastman did huge rewrites of the script.  I haven't read this yet, so have no idea how different it is, but there are many pencil notations with line changes and such, which could be in any number of hands - perhaps it will become obvious as I read and study what and how those changes occur.

I've dealt with some irritating emails that make me question why I ever got into this business and into bed with some of the asses I've worked for. Sometimes, when you tell the truth and you're called a pessimist or someone who's not a team player, how do you make them realize that being the voice of reality is exactly what they need before they blow themselves up with their unrealistic fantasies. Today, my emails basically said, you're reading the contract wrong; get a good attorney and straighten this out before you ruin this project. Oy!

So, now I'm watching the documentary about Joan Rivers that I had really wanted to see in the theatres last year. It's quite wonderful.

It has been raining on and off all day with possible snow later tonight.  Currently it is a cold 44 degrees.  Craig is in San Diego where it is 65 degrees.  I don't think he is going to want to return home.  I would be envious if we weren't heading south after he comes home.

I had to leave the magazine last year for similar reasons. And I had to buy out a business partner on the web site, even though I really didn't/don't have the money. But I believe things are much better without either. And I hope that the same happens for you.

This afternoon on "America's Test Kitchen" they had what looks like a fantastic recipe for banana bread.

I have been craving a slice for the past 90 minutes. Or zucchini, or pumpkin, or cranberry bread. Or carrot cake.

Instead, I'm having vegetables and tofu in brown sauce and it's quite delicious.

I heard later on the news that there were repairs being done today down the  street from the center.  I hope it was an emergency and not a scheduled repair.  This has been on the schedule for a long time.  If I had been a food vender who was suddenly out all the food I prepared, I would be looking to file a small claim against someone if it isn't a mistake

Not that time.  She was going to develop some property not far where we lived and build a ritzy vacation home resort for her Hollywood (something like that) friends and people of "class".  When you want permission to build in a new area it is not wise to insult the locals and tell them you are bringing in a better group of people. ;D  Needless to say she didn't get permission to build.

DR Ginny, I am not at all sorry.  1/2 of our group learned the dance Friday - we should have done a few more run throughs, it wasn't really that smooth yet.  The other 1/2 was learning it today at 1:00 and we were doing the dance at 2:00.  Now, it's not difficult, but it's still 8 people doing a dance together.   I think we would have been really bad today.   If they reschedule, we'll practice more and should be able to do it

I'm not defending her since I know none of the details, I have no idea how many years ago this "insult" occurred, and clearly something she was involved in didn't happen in some geographic area of PA, but I know none of the details and yours are vague. I admire her drive, her politics, her charitable work for Gods Love We Deliver, and her outrageous sense of comedy.

Now I will watch the first episodes of MILDRED PIERCE, which I am looking forward to immensely. When this miniseries finishes, I'll watch Miss Crawford's version again.

I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray, then finally heard the two bonus tracks for Pirates, the film versions of the main and end title, which I was none too pleased with sound-wise.  Additionally, I'd forgotten that the DVD's end titles fade out after about 1:10 - which I found odd when I watched it, for a movie of the 80s.  Well, luckily, the French blu-ray had arrived a few days ago - it's region B - I put it in and I was right - the real end titles run close to five minutes and are superb and the sound on the blu-ray is amazing DTS-Master Audio.  But I know no one who has a multi-region blu-ray player, so how to transfer it.  My mastering guy doesn't have one.  In talking to him, he told me to go look at the player - we ascertained that it had in and out RCA jacks and that I could plug it directly into my CD burner - I doubted it, but figured it out and by gum and by golly and buy bonds it worked.  And now we have the full end credits in glorious sound so instead of making that a bonus track, we'll actually use it in the album sequence - then the film version of the main title will be the one and only bonus track.  Very happy now.

I lived it.  She and her lawyer were extremely insulting to the natives, so much so we all wondered WHY she would want to live near us.  That along with her cruel fat jokes to Elizabeth Taylor turned me off of her.  I appreciate reading your complimentary comments & knowing another side of her.

I just watched the latest episode of "The Event."  It's getting real interesting.

Good Evening!

Well... The only thing that could make this visit to Chicago any better would be... Well, after tonight... Well... That's going to be a quite a challenge to beat!

The movie version of "Forever Plaid" is going to be on the Tacoma/Centralia PBS at 11 pm.  The downside is that this particular PBS station isn't in hi-def...and I don't know if they're still this way, but they didn't broadcast in stereo. :P But I'll at least get to watch it.

One Tequila! Two Tequila! Three Tequila! Floor!

The Joan Rivers documentary is really amazing: I cried, I laughed, and I appreciated its honesty. She's one brave lady for allowing such close scrutiny. Bravo!

I've been wanting to see this.  It's in my Netflix queue.

Hello--it's a sunny but cold day.  I guess it's a little colder than usual for the Cherry Blossom Festival.  I haven't been down to see the trees in years.  I really should make it a point to do so this year.

There is a series of yearly photos in my family's photo albums of all of us gathered in front of the same Cherry Blossom Tree. :)

I saw the cherry trees on Friday. They wer beautiful.

It's the first time I've ever seen them.

The Cherry Trees are beautiful. Alas, they're blooming also means the start of the major Spring pollen season in DC. -Which usually wreaks havoc with actors' and singers' voices.

But they really are beautiful to look at. -Especially if you're standing under one when a gust of wind hits, and you end up in the midst of a shower of pink and white petals.

So, now I'm watching the documentary about Joan Rivers that I had really wanted to see in the theatres last year. It's quite wonderful.

The candor and honesty in that documentary is "refreshingly shocking".

I'm so proud of you, veggies & tofu. :D

Well... I'm guessing the tofu was deep-fried first and that the brown sauce was laden with sodium. ;)

Richard and I have been out to the retirement community to turn over keys to my aunt's house to my cousin who arrived this evening from Georgia.  He has a HUGE job this week, clearing out the place and figuring out what to keep and what to disperse.  He has an appoint in the morning with folks there who can help him know what his mom will be able to have in her new digs.

DR Ginny - Will those "folks" also then assist in dispersing the items that won't be making the journey to your aunt's new digs?

DR Ginny, I am not at all sorry.  1/2 of our group learned the dance Friday - we should have done a few more run throughs, it wasn't really that smooth yet.  The other 1/2 was learning it today at 1:00 and we were doing the dance at 2:00.  Now, it's not difficult, but it's still 8 people doing a dance together.   I think we would have been really bad today.   If they reschedule, we'll practice more and should be able to do it

As I'm wont to say from time to time:

Whew!

Yup. We all went out for pie at Perkins instead of dancing.  I had Key Lime. It was good

Hmmmm... Perkins! :)

DRs Laura and Sandra - I think this may have been asked before, but...

Would Swedish Flop (http://www.swedishbakery.com/site/epage/27313_222.htm) (scroll down) make a good dessert after Floop made by the Swedish Chef?

"The Amazing Race", "Chopped: All-Stars", "Top Chef All-Stars", etc... I have sooo much TV to catch up once I get back from Chicago.

Or not.
