Good morning, all! I am off my usual sleeping schedule and I am not happy aboout it. I'm up too late at niht these days and sleeping too late. This is something I will work on this week.
As far as all else goes, everything is at sixes and sevens. No money to hand, but who knows if a check might not arrive today. One can always hope. Today, I have a trip to the bank and the market before I settle in with the EILEEN scores. Tonight I'm havng dnner with my old friend Dennis Buck, Lorraine Serabian, and Patricia and Will Snyder. I haven't seen any of them in around 9 years, so I am looking forward to it. I know there will be lots of gossip.

I've developed a fondness for crab cake sandwiches, but I eat them so rarely that they don't have to be excellent for me to enjoy them. My favorite, a Cajun crab cake sandwich, used to be on the menu of Le Bus, but alas, disappeared about two years ago.

The UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS sequel start next Sunday. It looks promising, though Jean Marsh seems to be the only returning cast member.

DR Jose, I am curious about the UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS sequel, but I doubt I'll watch it until it's on DVD. I'm in the middle of MILDRED PIERCE, and I cannot rrcommend it highly enough, I've missed the beginning of THE BORGIAS, which I can catch up with on Showtime on Demand, and there's this GAME OF THRONES, about which I know nothing, coming up.
I didn't see all of the original UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS - which I only caught occasionally in its initial PBS run - until around three years ago when I watched the entire series in one fell swoop that took me several weeks to accomplish. It was truly an amazing series.

Speaking of the BBC, I'm listening to the wonderful Stephen Oliver score for Royal Shakespeare Company production of THE LiFE AND ADVENTURES OF NICHOLAS NICKLEBY, and I'm thinking I want to watch this brilliant production again soon.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Two of my current favorites:
The porchetta sandwich at Porchetta (http://www.porchettanyc.com/). It's just Italian roast pork on a roll. So simple, but so delicious and satisfying.
I'm also a fan of Vietnamese banh mi. There's a great place here in Chinatown, Bánh Mě Saigon (http://www.banhmisaigonnyc.com/). Not only can you get a great Vietnamese sandwich, but you can also buy some jewelry at the counter up front.

Good morning, all.

TOD: The sandwich that's in front of me. Usually.
I could go on about favorite sandwiches, which are memorable for many different reasons, an excellent bread with plenty of crust, perfectly cut slices of house-cured meats and salami, fresh cheeses, great vegetables. So, I'll limit myself to three:
1. The veggie pitas we made recently for a fundraiser. Slivers of orange and red bell peppers, slices of zucchini and yellow squash, quarters of green pattypan squash, mushrooms, Asian purple eggplant and more grilled and stuffed into pita with feta and olives on top.
2. A trio of grilled cheese sandwiches hot off the grill. One was stuffed with multiple cheeses, a second had colby and roasted red bell pepper, and the third had tapenade melted into the cheese.
3. A pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw from one of the local taco trucks. The sauce on the pork is made with mustard and isn't too sweet. Neither is the slaw. Together they are magical. In fact, I think that's lunch today.

I also figured something was up when I noticed the change in the wording of a lot of the housing ads on Craigslist. In any case...
The "worst case scenario" for me right now is to move down to Fairfax/DC a couple of weeks earlier than originally planned. -And there's really nothing wrong with some extra "Uncle Jojo" time.

My favs were Margie and Luke, DR Jenn. Though, of the two, it was primarily Margie I admired for her quiet strength.
Also, kind of strange that there was relatively no dredging up of the friction between Margie and Luke and LaKisha and Jennifer during their original season...

TOD: The absolute "best" sammich I ever et was called a "muffaletta" sammich. I had it at a no-longer-open eatery in Oakland called "The Cuckoo's Nest."
Funny thing about this sammich: It was a "special" the day I ordered it. It was so good I was sure they'd have it again. After a couple of months had gone by and I went back, I asked about the sammich and whether it might be offered again. The waitress asked and reported back to me: "No one here has ever heard of it and the cook says he never made one before." I asked if they had a new cook and was told no, it was the same cook they had used for years.
So....!!!!!!!!!!
I know what I ate and where I ate it...and even had a witness who remembered how I oohed and aahed over it.
Oh, well.
I've looked up different recipes for the sammich, but have never tried to replicate it.

The font was the same as Murder at the Hollywood Historical Society, and so I was not concerned with readability really. But interestingly, I think it was JohnG that said that he really liked the cover AND the font because he felt it had a fun 30s mystery feel to it. That comment made complete sense to me and that's the comment that caused me to rethink the font, because while the font was really appropriate for Hollywood Historical Society, which had to do with a group of older folks preserving Hollywood's classic history, this book is not that - so I talked to Grant about that and that made sense to him, too, and he just sent me the new version and it's really great, I think. So, thanks to all for the feedback and I'm pleased as punch with this.

That's why your comment was so helpful - even though you liked it, it communicated the wrong feeling in terms of the style of the font - and that helped me focus on the why of that.

The winds are tremendously strong here today. They were so loud that you couldn't hear other people in meeting I had to attend. And they kept the car swerving off toward the side.

I just found out that a friend of mine -- the one who always came and helped with medical stuff for the foster kitties over the years -- was found deceased in her home. She had been ill for quite some time.

My favorite sandwich (I typed it "sandwish") is cheese and avocado on whole-grain bread. Not many eateries serve it, but there's one I frequent here that used to offer custom sandwiches. They no longer do so, but I'm a good customer, so they do it for me. They call it a "Jeanne sandwich." These days I'm doing it on a whole wheat tortilla. It's good that way, too.

I'm looking forward to the new UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS. I'll be waiting for the DVD, though. I was pleased to see that Heidi Thomas is the screenwriter; I really respect her work. It'll be interesting to see how it's received. Sooo many of us LOVED the old series.

Back from a two-mile jog.

I have returned from a wonderful dinner, with delicious mac'n'cheese made with four cheeses, at the home of my old and dear friend Dennis Buck. It was great to see Patricia and Bill Snyder of the now-defunct New York State Theatre Institute, a sad loss for the New York State arts programs. My dear Lorraine Serabian, of the OBC of ZORBA, and I had a great evening catching up and laughing at each other's foibles. The bird has decided he does not like La Merm in "Gypsy." He shrieks, but only during her numbers. He did not do this with Tyne Daly yesterday. I think we're going to need to have a little talk.

I have returned from a wonderful dinner, with delicious mac'n'cheese made with four cheeses, at the home of my old and dear friend Dennis Buck. It was great to see Patricia and Bill Snyder of the now-defunct New York State Theatre Institute, a sad loss for the New York State arts programs. My dear Lorraine Serabian, of the OBC of ZORBA, and I had a great evening catching up and laughing at each other's foibles. Not only is she a fierce actress, she's also one of the funniest ladies I know. I love her dearly.
I knew Patricia Snyder from back in the days when I covered the Albany theater scene. Nice lady. Was thinking of the Egg, their theater, the other day. I remember Tony Lo Bianco in "Hizzoner," a non-musical, one-man version of the Fiorello LaGuardia story.

I couldn't agree with you more. Old-fashioned chicken salad is a real favorite of mine, has been since I first had when I was 5 or 6. And no raisins, no almond slivers, no candied pecans or anything like that.

I was looking for either a 2 or 3 month sublet. A friend of mine just got booked for a six-week stint starting this weekend, so that could be an option. Thankfully, I have a wonderful friend who actually likes having a (temporary) roommate. And we may just make the "temporary" official until I head down to DC. :)

I like it either very basic: mayo, celery, a little bit of onion, a little pickle relish, celery seed, salt and pepper.
I also like Curry Chicken Salad: mayo, apples, raisins, almonds, celery, curry powder, a dash of cayenne.

The law , as a I understand it from a very brief google search - appears to be aimed at preventing landlords from using apartments as hotel rooms - and there seem to be specific exemptions for house/pet sitters -

well the new law applies to sublets of less than 30 days so I am not sure why that should be an impediment to your subletting situation

Mine is pretty much like Jose's. I love both celery and celery seed, Duke's Mayo (which has no sugar), onion. Salt is important, and a touch of pepper. And some chicken, preferably dark meat (chicken breasts have no flavor any more). I may add some dill pickle chopped up fine. And occasionally some dill weed. Chop everything very fine. The bread should be white toast, to be as nostalgic as possible. It also has less flavor to mask the chicken salad.

Is it 30 or 60 days? I've been hearing that it was 60 days. In any case...
Finding a legal short term sublet is always difficult, since a truly legal sublet can not be less than six months. As for my current situation(s), I blame most of it on bad timing. And there were a couple of roommate situations I checked out last week that I did not want to be a part of, if you get my drift.
Now, there are a lot of people looking for people to sublet their rooms come May 1 - everyone starts to head out for their summer-stock work. April is at the low-end of the cycle.

Been watching all the clips from "Gypsy" tonight on BlueGobo.com. The most interesting was one of La Merm on Gypsy Rose Lee's TV talk show. It featured backstage footage of everyone in the cast to Sondheim, Styne and Robbins at work. The clip of Tyne Daly and Jonathan Hadary was surprisingly sweet and tender.

The new law, which goes into effect May 2011, seeks to clarify current housing law by defining what a permanent residence is: a dwelling occupied by a household for 30 days or longer. Only the people living in the dwelling can allow someone else to stay in the unit for less than 30 days, so long as no money is exchanged.
But for more than 30 days you can rent no problem - and as long as it is the current tenant renting out it is OK - the y are really jusy trying to stop landlords from converting their apartment buildimgs into hotels
