I tried to watch FRINGE for the first time last fall. While I was intrigued, I was thrown my the thick storyline and decided to put it off until I cought up with the previous two seasons. I started Season one about a week ago and I am hooked! How could I have not have been watching this show? No, it's not on the same level as LOST, and the last two episodes I've viewed have been off a bit compared to the excellant previous ones, but I'm finding that I can't wait to watch additional episodes each night.

In 1996, the New York State Theatre Institute produced "The Snow Queen," a musical by Richard Peaslee, who wrote the score for the Royal Shakespeare Company's MARAT/SADE, and the wonderful Adrian Mitchell, lyricist for the MARAT/SADE. I had loved the MARAT/SADE score so I was happy to be asked to work with Richard.
NYSTI had done the show about 10 years earlier, when it was scored by Bruce Coughlin, and I think Richard was unhappy that I was working on this revised version. Peaslee, Coughlin, and I were credited for the orchestration, although at least 50% of the scoring was mine and the other half was revised by me to work with the 5-piece band. Richard did very little, which was frustrating, and at one point to get him motivated, since Pat Birch had asked him for weeks for a dance arrangement for the Crows' dance and he was unable to provide it, NYSTI brought Dennis Buck up from Manhattan to write an arrangement. This gave Richard a blueprint to work from and he finally produced the dance music that I scored.
I loved working with Pat and the NYSTI folk, but it was not a pleasant experience. When the script was published, I was the only person on the NYSTI production whose name was omitted from the credits. I haven't seen Richard since then, and - while I think his music is wonderful - I really have little to say about him that's kind. Adrian Mitchell, who died recently, was the opposite, a kind and generous man I liked very much.
Still, the music from the show is glorious, and I wish we'd recorded it in Troy in 1996 with the full band, rather than the synthesizers they used in London. There were also song changes made for London, but I'm not sure if the two or three new songs are better than what they replaced.
I just discovered the audiobook made of the London production is available from audible.com as a download, so I bought it yesterday. There's one cast change from the Troy production, but a lot of my NYSTI friends are in it, and it's fun to hear. The story's my favorite Hans Christian Andersen story, and the production was funny, ingenious, and extremely moving. I wept through several rehearsals and performances when Gerda left her granny's rose-covered garden to give up everything to save her friend Kai from the Snow Queen before his heart turns to ice and he loses his soul.

Hi Everyone,
Our daughter Carin did have a car accident on Tuesday, April 5, but, thankfully, she is OK!
Word of her accident has been spreading like wildfire, so I am sending this huge, mass e-mailing to everyone to allay any fears and exaggerations.
On Tuesday night, she was driving her Plymouth Neon in Los Angeles, with bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch in the passenger's seat.
An elderly man driving a Chevrolet Malibu ran a red light and collided with the passenger side at about a 45 degree angle.
Airbags deployed in both cars. Yes, they were wearing their seat belts. Carin suffered a hairline fracture of the right wrist, a dislocated right shoulder and a bruised right ankle. Her shoulder popped back in on its own and her wrist is in a cast. Daniel suffered a fractured cervical vertebrae, and is in a neck brace for a while. Both were discharged from the hospital within 24 hours. The car appears to be totaled. The man driving the other car did not appear to be injured.
So, we are grateful it was not more serious! It could have been so much worse!

I have to say, though, that it makes me smile that he identified her passenger as "bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch", but did not modify the driver of the other car as "...an elderly tone-deaf gentleman..." or perhaps "...an elderly gentleman high tenor..."

For those who watch Food Network, "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" is featuring a San Antonio restaurant in its Monday show. It's a Neopolitan pizzeria called Dough with a pork lovers' pizza that's going to be featured. Doug Horn (get the name? Dough?) and his wife, Lori, are really nice and I feel happy for them that they're getting some national exposure .
They make a beet and bacon salad and a perfectly light panna cotta that could curl your toes.

I was just awakened by the phone and I thought, "Who is calling me this early?" Then I was told it was almost noon. That means I slept close to eleven hours. Guess I really needed to sleep. However, it also means I've missed the entire morning so I better get crackin'.

Jane, I would think (hope) that an e-mail to the Hilton corporation would produce better results...especially since your issue was for medical reasons.

I kept telling them if I were I diabetic I could die from this. They were extremely apologetic while continuing to screw this up. This medication cost me over $800 and I'm not sure the time it sat out of the frig waiting for frozen packs and then ice didn't ruin it, nor do I know how well the ice worked. After a couple of hours we found a phaacy that gave me a frozen pack which may have saved it. I waited until today to call my doctor only to find they are closed on Fridays

Greetings from beautiful downtown Akron! Anita and I had a pleasant drive - in and out of sprinkles, but no downpours. We stopped in Dayton for an excellent program on social media and in Delaware, OH, for lunch. Our conference is at the Quaker Square Inn (http://www.quakersquareakron.com), which used to be a silo facility. All the rooms are round.

Well...
My bus ride back up from DC this morning was uneventful and relatively fast.
Then once I got back into the City, I ran a few errands. I had planned to take a nap, but I don't think that's going to happen. Hopefully, I won't asleep during tonight's concert by the Orchestra of St. Luke's. They're showing off their new home/concert hall tonight: The DiMenna Center for Classical Music (http://www.oslmusic.org/dimenna-center).

You should write them a very strongly worded letter. It could have been a very dangerous situation

Well...
My bus ride back up from DC this morning was uneventful and relatively fast.
Then once I got back into the City, I ran a few errands. I had planned to take a nap, but I don't think that's going to happen. Hopefully, I won't asleep during tonight's concert by the Orchestra of St. Luke's. They're showing off their new home/concert hall tonight: The DiMenna Center for Classical Music (http://www.oslmusic.org/dimenna-center).

I kept telling them if I were I diabetic I could die from this. They were extremely apologetic while continuing to screw this up. This medication cost me over $800 and I'm not sure the time it sat out of the frig waiting for frozen packs and then ice didn't ruin it, nor do I know how well the ice worked. After a couple of hours we found a phaacy that gave me a frozen pack which may have saved it. I waited until today to call my doctor only to find they are closed on Fridays
You should write them a very strongly worded letter. It could have been a very dangerous situation
Remind me tomorrow ;)

Greetings from beautiful downtown Akron! Anita and I had a pleasant drive - in and out of sprinkles, but no downpours. We stopped in Dayton for an excellent program on social media and in Delaware, OH, for lunch. Our conference is at the Quaker Square Inn (http://www.quakersquareakron.com), which used to be a silo facility. All the rooms are round.

My sister insisted my father's funeral was family only, even excluding my parents oldest living friends, and then invited a few of her friends my brother & I didn't even know. She knew the friends of ours that would have gone.

We drove to the other end of downtown to the Spaghetti Warehouse, which is in the original 1869 B. F Goodrich factory building. Got back here just in time for a fire alarm and then to attend the pre-conference book discussion of Nicholas Kristof's Half the Sky.
This hotel used to be a Crowne Plaza, but has been bought by the adjacent University of Akron. The first 3 floors are still hotel space, but the other 5 floors are student housing. It's very weird to see the mix in the elevators of college students and middle aged/elderly women.

I'm tired of all the melodrama over shutting down the government. Whatever the issues or who is to blame. It's not going to be for any length if time if it does happen, social security and medicare don't stop, federal employees who don't work get paid for the time later, so they get some vacation that will be paid later. etc. It's just not that big of an impact. Sure if it was for weeks or months it would be a major impact, but a few days won't be. Heck, no one seems concerned that lawyers in our state who do indigent defense haven't been paid since January or February, and they are dealing with it.

I don't know from tax buckets. I do know that in some rare display of Divine Power, we got our rather sizable Federal refund today, mere moments before the (threatened) shutdown of our very own govn'tment, which would have delayed refunds being processed.

Off to finish watching THE KING'S SPEECH. Quite a delightful little film. I thought the best line in the entire Oscars, skits or not, was Anne Hathaway's, "I bring you good news from the future: microphones get smaller." :)

I have officially begun the 2008 "tax bucket" (we keep our stuff in a big Tupperware thingamajig until I'm ready to go to our preparer. This is what passes for excitement around these parts.

The concert by the Orchestra of St. Luke's at the newly opened Di Menna Center for Classical Music (http://www.oslmusic.org/dimenna-center) was wonderful. There were just two works on the program: Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony, and Beethoven's Fourth Symphony. -And the rehearsal hall/performance space is gorgeous!
It was being taped for future broadcast on "Performance Today", and Fred Child was the host for the evening. -I always get a kick out of seeing the face behind voice.

Oddly, I have seen none of these films, although I am quite familiar with them. ROBOT was qutie a big hit recently and CLICK is supposed to be scary.
If you can, I would recommend adding MY BROTHER NIKHIL and THE 1965 version of GUMNAAM to the order.
