Well, you've read the notes, the notes were big and sleepy, and now it is time for you to post until the big and sleepy cows come home.

As promised, here's the new Kritzerland release - the first-time ever complete soundtrack to one of the most beloved horror movies ever made.  Do not wait if you want this one.  You know the deal - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid directly via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack:

WE FEEL A MORAL OBLIGATION TO WARN YOU THAT THE PICTURE YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE WILL SHOCK YOU AS NO OTHER FILM EVER HAS…

BLACK SUNDAY
Music Composed and Conducted by Les Baxter

The moral obligation warning came at the head of the American International Pictures US version of 1960s Black Sunday, which was actually released in the US in 1961.  And for once that kind of hyperbolic hype was true and you knew it right from the get go – first, with a woman being branded with an “S” (for Satan) in extreme close-up, with the sound of the brand searing her flesh, and second, having a mask of spikes hammered into her face by a huge masked man with a huge mallet.  That alone was enough to send impressionable young people running up the aisle, and there was more to come, a lot more – a whole plethora of nightmare-inducing images.  American International actually trimmed the most violent moments (a spike through someone’s eye, melting flesh, spurting blood), but what was left was still pretty potent for its time.  Add to that, Bava’s mist-shrouded exteriors and beautifully shot interiors, and you had atmosphere to spare.  But the most brilliant bit of atmosphere a filmmaker could ever have was the ethereal presence of the absolutely stunning Barbara Steele in her dual role of Princess Asa and Katia.  Steele would go on to become one of the most iconic faces in 60s horror cinema.   And also aiding the atmosphere incredibly well was the wonderful musical score by Les Baxter.

One of the first decisions American International made for the US version of the film, was to replace the original moody score of Roberto Nicolosi with a more conventional horror score, which they assigned to composer Les Baxter.  Baxter had just finished scoring Roger Corman’s House of Usher, and he was a perfect choice.  He delivered a classic score, which was occasionally moody like the original Nicolosi score, but also delivered the kinds of musical horror moments to which American audiences were accustomed.   Right from the start, with the warning logo, you get that wonderful Baxter sound – shrieking brass that was literally warning you to watch out.  There’s a beautiful love theme for Katia, there’s ominous, brooding music, there’s music for beer drinkers, there’s music that brilliantly punctuates a couple of the film’s scariest sequences, and the score just does what a score for a horror film should – underline the horror in the best and most visceral way it can .

Black Sunday was hugely influential on an entire generation of filmmakers, and continues to be to this day.  Its combination of brilliant and moody photography, horror, and poetry, has been paid homage by many directors, including Francis Ford Coppola and Tim Burton – the latter noted that “One of the films that remain with me probably stronger than anything is Black Sunday.”  You can see that influence throughout most of Burton’s film, Sleepy Hollow.

A thirty-four minute suite from Black Sunday was originally released on LP, where it was rather ludicrously mislabeled as Black Sabbath (another great Bava film whose US release also carried a score by Les Baxter).    That suite was assembled from a 7½ ips tape of not great quality.  The suite received its first CD appearance on Bay Cities and then subsequently on Citadel, both releases from that same tape.  Missing from the suite was not only good audio quality but also an awful lot of the film’s best music.  The suite also was assembled in no particular order and didn’t really reflect the way the music was used in the film at all, not to mention that it was one long track.

For this release, we found the original mixed two-track session masters in the MGM vaults, which were in excellent condition.  The best news was that those tapes contained every note of music Baxter wrote for the film.  The only piece that was missing was the little thirty-second solo piano piece played by the character of Katia in the film.  The sound on those original tapes is, of course, miles ahead of the previous version – it is pristine mono sound and finally allows the score to be heard in the way that it should be.  We’ve assembled the score in precise film order, which is how it plays best.

So here, at long last, is Les Baxter’s great score to one of the all-time classic horror films, Mario Bava’s Black Sunday.  Be afraid, be very afraid.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the third week of May – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Aha!  I have purchased a new computer.  I love my Sony Vaio!  In fact, it is so nice.....I decided to buy a newer model of a Sony Vaio....and it is most excellent.

I am still transferring programs and working on a few other things......hopefully by Monday, it will be my official computer and this VAIO will go into the living room replacing the old Apple G4.

Good morning, all! I slept very late, accompanied by many weird dreams, the last being an attempt to print a computer image onto a bolt of cloth. Somewhere within this dream, which tok place at my old 94th Street apartment, I was working a construction job in Ohio, I think. I also was at an unemployment office.

I have to run errands today, now that I am out of bed. After that, I think I will tidy up the EILEEN papers left floating about the apartment, vacuum, and generally tidy up the place.

Welcome back, DR JMK!

The first film I remember seeing with Peter Lorre is 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. I also love him in MALTESE FALCON and ARSENIC AND OLD LACE.

Claude Rains? THE INVISIBLE MAN.

No resolution to the Unemployment matter.  the employer had put in for an appeals hearing back in (I think) November, but nothing as of now.  Thanks for asking.

But on the cyberstalking/cyberbullying  matter, and the way Ann Miner and Mike Reynolds of All that Chat chose to deal with that by protecting the bullies, it's basically out of my hands.  I've done all I can (without spending lots of my own money) to see to it that complaints have been filed against them, but I'm not interested in seeing anything kill their site.   Been very careful not to sandbag them in a way that they can cry foul - they have copies of anything that's been filed.

Last night, I worked the Fiesta Oyster Bake. I poured wine. I'm glad I didn't have to stand over hot coals while the oysters baked, as you can see above.

Fiesta, for those who have not been to San Antonio, is a 15- to 20-day excuse to party. In fact, there are many parties all over town, some of which draw more than 100,000 people. The parade on the river, the parade through downtown, the art shows, the food, the alcohol, the fun -- it's all a bit exhausting by the time it's over.

I also on a lark looked up a bunch of old LPs I had to see if they had made it onto CD yet, and lo and behold, they all had.  These were items I had checked on maybe 3 or 4 years ago, but hadn't yet made it to CD.  Everything from Les Brown's Composer's Holiday to Freddie Hubbard's first album for Columbia to a bunch of rarer jazz things were out, so, yes, I bought them all.

I have also been on a cha-cha kick (stop laughing), and am currently enjoying the rhythmic strains of Edmundo Ros doing a number of Hollywood and Broadway tunes you would never think could be converted to cha-chas.  :)  There's also a fantastic Tommy Dorsey Orchestra cha-cha album from 1958 I have been loving.

Back from all my errands. It's a beautiful spring day and everyone is out, include the halt, the lame and the maimed, who are mostly on Sixth Avenue for the street fair, which screwed up traffic throughout Chelsea. Because of the heavy sidewalk traffic, I had to slow my pace behind a person driving one of those motorized wheelchairs, got around him and nearly fell over a blind man swinging his cane in ll directions, got past him to be slowed down by an old coot with a cane tottering in all directions, east, west, north, and south, although he was technically heading west. That was just on 23rd Street. Every sidewalk was similar. Thank God I'm home.

I love my cha-cha version of "O Holy Night." I'm sure Adolphe Adam would have approved.

It's such an early 19th Century sound. NOT.

Richard Traubner, in his operetta book, claimed there was a rhumba in the first or second act finale of Offenbach's Barbe-Bleu, and even though it's false, this rumor has been perpetuated in several other books. The closest the 19th Century Parisians got to cha-cha and rhumba is the piano music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk.

Yes, but would you think that a Jewish composer such as Adam would have appreciated the fact that years after his death he melody was used as a Christmas carol?

He wrote "Minuit Chretiens" as a Christmas piece!

And there's no foundation to the Jewish rumor; he was buried as a Roman Catholic,

Now, Meyerbeer and Offenbach were Jewish composers. Meyerbeer died a rich Jew, and Offenbach, whose father was a cantor, converted to Catholicism to marry.

I've been watching the bonus disc to "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" that I got from Netflix.  I watched the movie a couple of days ago.  I don't usually watch bonus discs (although, I do prefer to buy them...weird, huh? ;)).  Anyway, what I've watched so far has been quite informative and entertaining.  I'll certainly finish the rest of it.

I now have to take a shower and go to my sister's house.  We're celebrating my niece's 27th birthday, even though her birthday's not until a week from tomorrow.  She and her mom (my sister) will be in Oregon visiting our cousin and his wife next weekend, so we're doing it all today.  I still have some errands to run before I go over there and I'm quite late in getting started, so I must be off.

Have a good day, all!

I stand (or sit) corrected, though the rumor persists in many books. Still, since he wrote dance music, he might have enjoyed hearing his most famous composition in a new way. Here's a rather poor video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJGMux9t_Vk

Good Evening!

Well... As I was getting ready to head out to enjoy the nice - but still somewhat cool - Spring day here in NYC, a friend called, "I have comps for Jerusalem (http://www.jerusalembroadway.com/) at 2:00." So...

WOW!

I will admit that a good chunk of it went over my head. It's very British, and a lot of the themes reflect British society, politics and legends, as well as the significance of the hymn "Jerusalem" to the British people. However, there are enough "bits" to keep one entertained, interested and involved. -And frightened at times too.

Mark Rylance gives yet another amazing performance. I mean, just hand him the Tony now. He portrays a sort of anti-hero. It's not only a verbally demanding role, but it's also very physical. -He even wrote a very interesting program note about the legend of St. George and the Dragon.

And I'm about to head back out again to a wedding reception for my friends, Michael and Adam. They had their civil ceremony yesterday in Connecticut, a family lunch earlier today, and they're having a party for their friends tonight. Should be quite a nice party. Michael is a foodie-buddy of mine, and all the food being served tonight are from some of his favorite restaurants and bakeries. :)

I'm guessing you try to avoid Hilton Hotels now.  The dog convention making it nicer to be around the action.  They had a nice outside area where we ate dinner and chatted with other people and their dogs.  When it was chilly out we ate in the bar area just inside the patio.

When I booked the reservations I asked what the difference was between the more expensive pool side rooms and a regular room.  I was concerned about noise by the pool.  Had the woman said pool side overlooked pretty flowers and trees while the regular rooms overlook the parking lot I would have splurged.  She also neglected to mention the pool was set back some from the rooms.

We saw gates on some of the patios so the dogs could be let off leash on the patios.:)

Jane, it wasn't an issue of the kids not being able to swim--it was an issue of literally round the clock LOUD noise which the hotel absolutely refused to do anything about.  We found out later a bunch of people had complained about it and I went down and read them the riot act when we got ready to check out and I do believe we got a rather sizable discount and an apology.

I grew up in Utah, as you may recall, so I have very fond memories of several wonderful vacations in Mesa Verde, and I think I even still have some of my souvenirs from going there with my Dad when I was little.  I still remember climbing those rope ladders.

Oh man,  I herded the cats the first time the sirens went off.  Got them down the basement.  Boo got up stairs and I chased her all over the house. I was frantic and ticked off and that scared her so she ran even more.  I finally got her downstairs, played with her and had food and water so she calmed down.....

They finally gave the all clear and I made my last post....then out of the blue...TORNADO WARNING , TAKE COVER.....  Oh man!  They reported the best chance of a tornado was a local State Park....I would be right in the path, so in a mad rush I grabbed all three cats and headed back down the basement.  I told myself earlier if there was a tornado warning I'd put them in their carriers, but there was no tornado spotted, just the possibility, so I didn't traumatize them any further.  They were upset with me and pretty confused, but they were all in one of two rooms and I could have gotten them into their carriers fairly quickly.    I also had the doors shut upstairs into the hall and kitchen (there is no door to the basement) so they wouldn't have gotten far.

Anyway, no tornado here, but there have been tornados all night across the state so I took the warnings very seriously.  We are all back upstairs, looks like the storm has passed us here but there is a train of them headed across the state

I'd see about staying right inside the park, JMK. Flagstaff is quite a ways away. There's a town right outside the park gates, too.

Wae-Ling Goldstein and I spent the day at the Migration Celebration at the river.

Thanks Laura.  They have a new policy to blow the sirens when there is a severe thunderstorm with winds predicted over 60 mph. That's what the first warning was, but the tornado warning really shocked me, we don't get that many tornado warnings unless one is on the way

All three cats are curled up sleeping, guess they've gotten over the excitement

I do give kudos to the weathermen on two of our local stations.  They have been broadcasting nonstop since 6:00 PM and it's almost 11:00 PM

I've heard at least 2 towns have been hit hard, only a few minor injuries reported so far.  Double digits in tornadoes and they are still happening.  Crazy night

JMK when I went to the Grand Canyon (30 years ago) I was able to stay inside the park  http://www.grandcanyonlodges.com/?gclid=CNKm-K-FkagCFQWD5QodAAh_1A

I still remember getting up before dawn to stand at the rim and watch the sun rise over the canyon

The Maswik Lodge is a short walk to the canyon rim. If you have money, though, check into the Bright Angel or El Tovar.

We don't have storm sirens.

I rely on my weather radio and the tv more than I do on the sirens.  I did find out tonight I can hear them from my house. That's nice to know

I'm hoping that the storms aren't too intense when they get to Decorah.  Would hate to see problems for the eagles

I am glad I waited until tomorrow to go to visit my parents.  With the severity of the storms, I would have been a basket case worrying about the cats and the house if I had stayed up there tonight

They are done here, but the watches go until 5:00 AM.  I'm listening to a storm chaser on the Weather Channel call it "Epic"

ROPE OF SAND is indeed a lovely film in many ways. Not your usual film noir, but lots of colorful characters. I especially liked Peter Lorre's character.

Congrats to DR JRand on his new Sony Vaio computer.

Does anyone know how to pronounce "Vaio"? Two syllables or three? I am always confused when lots of vowels are stuck together.

Good Evening!

So...

The reception was very nice. Good people. Good food. LOTS of good food...

When Michael placed the order with his caterer, he told them that he was expecting about 50 people. They told him that they had trays of food that feed 35 people. So... Michael ordered 5 trays of food. In other words, he ordered enough food for 175 people. -And that was on top of the 100s of cookies that his groom's grandmother made - AMAZINGLY delicious Italian butter cookies - and the muffalettas (Michael is from New Orleans) and dips that Michael made himself.

And what does Michael do for a living? He's a college math professor. ;)

What a coincidence, as I am finished with my viewing also.

Just watched a fun Joan Crawford melodrama which costarred Steve Cochran and Kent Smith.
