Title: WHAT'S GOOD FOR THE GOOSE IS GOOD FOR THE GANDER

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were good for both goose and gander, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - the cows are good for neither the goose nor gander.

We watched SUNDAY IN NEW YORK last night.

The movie is certainly dated, but it's still a lot of fun and it has a very likable cast in Jane Fonda, Rod Taylor, Cliff Robertson and the lovely Jo Morrow, who I used to know.

I love SUNDAY IN NEW YORK....especially the game in the taxi, which sort of reminds me of the word game in YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU...

And the last word is Sex.....everybody got Sex?  And now I'll read Mrs. Kirby's answers.
Sex - Wall Street....

Sex....Wall Street....Miriam whatever do you mean?

Well I don't know....it's just that you're always taking about Wall Street even.....

I don't like this game.

DR JMK is correct - I have heard it pronounced VIE-OH.

I finally got my screen resolution set how I want it so everything isn't too small.

Today is the day.

Yes, Messala, today is the day.

This is THE DAY of the AUDITIONS for The Music Man.  It happens at 3 p.m. and I will be leaving about 2 p.m.  Then we shall see what we shall see.  Hopefully I will be able to talk to the pianist about the music BEFORE my audition.

Sixteen or so whole measures of "Wells Fargo Wagon."

DR CILLA LIZ - I am glad you made it through the storms with the kitties.....that was SOME night.

We have storm sirens here as well - but they are only used in the case of a tornado WARNING.

DR JOSE, I watched the segment you mentioned on EAT ST.

The people they interviewed the most were 1) young bearded guy (think Casey American Idol pre-makeover) and 2)a guy with short light brown hair who maybe was Austrian.

There were a couple of other people who got to say a few words here and there.  I believe you are in one scene where you are in line.

That segment made me want to eat from that truck. I have never tried food like that before.

Good morning!   I guess I'd better get serious about my taxes.  One problem-I still haven't gotten a letter from Musicares (the Grammy Award-related charity that gave Barbra Streisand the Person of the Year Award in February).  I was told that a large portion of the cost of the ticket was tax-deductible and since I paid for it in 2010 I understand that I should deduct it for that year.

DR Jennifer - I've already seen the episode via a screener they let the people who signed releases view via the internet. You see my back in one shot, and then I'm at the window in another. That's basically it.

It's great food, and Oleg and his crew really do a nice job. And their new storefront is nice too, and offers a few things that aren't available on the truck.

And that breaded and deep-fried hamburger, their "Schnitzburger", is surprisingly "light", and that extra bit of crunch from the crust is, well, a nice extra.

Good morning, all! I slept late. and it was again a night of torturous dreams, rather like a visit from DR MBarnum only less scary. I remember none of them now, thank God.

Today, I have nothing to do unless I want to do it, so this is my first day in ages to laze around. I do have things to do about the apartment, so I'll probaby keep myself busy with small projects, like organizing shelves, and tidying up, but I may spend some part of the day reading and watching backed up DVDs. Last night I watched a British film called THE WAITING ROOM, which I thoughtwas a romantic comedy. It wasn't. It's a sweet, rather melancholic film about two young people in bad romances - he works in a nursing home and lives with a nice young lady he no longer cares for, she's having an affair with her friend's husband -  and how they eventually find each other. The cast is good, and I enjoyed it.

I'm down to one Netflix movie now, so I may watch that today.

DR Cillaliz, I'm glad to hear the tornado passed you by. For a minute it sounded like you and Boo were heading to Oz. My mother and her sisters were terrified of tornados when I was growing up; my Ant Dorothy spent hours in her basement whenever there were storms, but I only recall one time in my life that my mother made all of us head to the basement. I do remember a terrible rash of tornado destruction in Cincinnati around 1969 or 1970; my college roommate and I were driving to a movie (OLIVER, maybe? with my friend Bill Sykes?) and had to turn back ecause of the wind and the rain.

More coffee!

Last night, I also caught a documentary on tv, "Ballet High," a look at the last year of high school seniors in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, including a tour around Canada performing for grade schools, auditions for major companies, and a few bits about their personal lives and families. I hope it comes out on DVD; I think Charlotte would love to see it.

We have very few Persians in Salem, except of the cat variety, so far as I know...at least I have only met one person from Iran since I've lived here. There is a larger community of them up towards where JMK lives, however. In fact ther is a nice little store just blocks from JMK's house which is run by a gentleman who moved to the US from Iran back in the early 1970s. I  bought some CDs and some desserts from him, while my very bigoted brother-in-law refused to set foot in the shop.

There is a very large Middle Eastern, mostly Muslim, community nearby, including the Portland Mosque where the sleeper cell was uncovered after 9/11.

DR JRand,

I talked to Ms. Jewell Lain yesterday and she was mentioning that after she made SUICIDE BATTALION she was offered leads in a bunch of "10 day pictures" as she called them...meaning, of course, low budget films. She said that one of them was "ATTACK OF THE GIANT HUMAN, which an actress named Allison Hayes ended up doing. Allison and I had the same agent, Jack Pomeroy." She said.

We started to talk about other things, and I had planned to ask her more about this comment and if she knew Allison, but forgot. I will try to remember to ask her next time I chat with her.

Wonderful new review on amazon for the last book:

5.0 out of 5 stars Mel, Woody and Bruce, April 10, 2011
By Joe Cascone - See all my reviews
This review is from: "There's Mel, There's Woody, and There's You": My Life in the Slow Lane (Paperback)
For anyone who has, had or is considering a career in show-biz, this book should be required reading. Funny, tough, moving and always emotional, it chronicles the reality of the beast that is a life in the arts. Bruce Kimmel has seen it all and done it all, and now tells it all. "There's Mel, There's Woody and There's You" is a wonderful expose of a type of show-biz that no longer exists, as much as those of us who work in the industry wish it did. Much delightful insight is shared with Bruce's interaction with some legends of the golden ages of Hollywood and Broadway as he managed to (almost) always stay employed in some aspect of show business, with nary a dull moment in between gigs. Hilarious and heart-wrenching behind-the-scenes descriptions of many of his projects are shared as his passion for his art forms are met with a roller-coaster of receptions from studio heads, audiences and his peers. Nowhere is this more evident than with his cult film "The First Nudie Musical." And we always wind up sharing his joy and frustration through the pages as he parlays the nice successes and accolades he has received, only to turn on a dime and be dashed by another near-miss via the idiocy of some incapable studio boss, then turn again as he survives another setback and carries on. At last we are able to see what a very realistic life in "the biz" is like, something that has previously managed to escape being documented -- at least as honestly and passionately as this!

Driving on Thursday I commented we were going through some extremely hard hail.  Shortly before the hail we passed two large trucks, one on the left side of the highway & one on the right, that had gone off the road.  It seems we just missed a tornado.

I have both computers all set up although the desktop is still not where it's supposed to be. We are contemplating a new desk and hope to find one before we move the old computer out. We would prefer not to do that twice. Also, Anthony wants to do a few things on the old computer (familiarity) before we move the new one in. We have two working desktops and two working laptops although the old laptop is now stored under a chair until we take it out to Long Island over Easter weekend. We have essentially stopped using it.

All the software works, the disk drives do what they are supposed to do, the memory card reader works, the new speakers work (the old speakers went wonky on us), I can record the BBC over the Internet., the high speed Internet works, flash drives work, Office 2010 works and all older documents open without a problem and I'm happy. I made the right decision in replacing the computers. We are now up to date and will be for at least another 2 to 3 years.

I went biking again today. Only 35 minutes. Good thing I came back because it was just starting to rain.

There are so many people biking the past few days. Even though it's only high 50s and low 60s I think everyone is so sick of winter. You would think it was summer by the amounts of people outside.

I went to the library today to see a theatre production for 4-10 year olds.

I cannot believe how irresponsible some parents are. There was one little boy (maybe 3) who was running around during the performance. And he kept pulling on the emergency door. I thought for sure that the alarm was going to go off. But the mother was not even looking at him.

I also didn't like that they let a ton of people in late. I know it's only a library show. But it was very disruptive. They had people coming in 20 minutes late and not even being quiet about it.

And a lot of people brought kids who were younger than 4. I get it that not everyone has someone else to watch their kids. But I"m sorry. You don't bring your 1 year old in to scream. Thankfully the lady took him out after a few minutes and just stood outside the door.

And this is the same lady who walked in with her stroller and saw my bag on the aisle seat and said she would be taking it. Maybe I would have moved if she had been nicer. But I told her i'm claustrophobic and i intentionally got there first to get that seat.

Good thing I didn't move since she ended up a) not even sitting so she could rock her kids stroller (she had moved to the aisle seat behind me). ANd b) she ended up leaving right away!

I'm spending my afternoon watching Tim Robbins' wonderful epic THE CRADLE WILL ROCK. I had wanted to see this when it was released and somehow never caught up with it. It's ambitious, covering a lot of American history, but the cast is quite wonderful and the filmn's design very evocative. I loved seeing Bertolt Brecht with Marc Blitzstein in Union Square before a riot, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo with Nelson Rockefeller discussing art. I had known the story of the first night of "The Cradle Will Rock" from John Houseman's biography, but I really wasn't aware of the poticial intrigues to close down the WPA and Federal Theatre. It alll seems quite relevant today.

The film I keep thinking of while I'm watching it is the glorious Les enfants du paradis, which is, I'd guess, twice the length of this film, but which covers an equally turbulent period in French history from a theatrical viewpoint and runs the gamut of social strata.

And congrats again, BK, for the Amazon review!

And now, it's time to shower and head to rehearsal.  Today will be a full run-through and possible a cue-to-cue after that.  It's going to be a long one.  After rehearsal, I'm going to my sister's to help her move her refrigerator.  We have to move her old one from her kitchen into the garage, and then she's getting a new one, but not today.  Well, I don't actually know if she's already gotten it and we have to move both, but I'll find out.  And after that, I'm off to my friend's house to feed her cats.

Have a good day, all!

I am watching a 1948 Bollywood film about a God who is on earth as a man and whose wife has been abducted by a demon. Now a human monkey is trying to rescue the woman while having his tail set of fire and burning down an entire island kingdom.

A talking bear, a talking vulture, a flesh eating demoness, and a one eyed creature all make appearences in between multiple songs and some dances.

Oh, and some of the guys are rather attractive and bare chested.

I loved THE CRADLE WILL ROCK! I found the whole inquisition against the Federal Theatre and Hallie Flanagan rather similar to the inquisition against the New York State Theatre Institute: all the time in the world given for those with evidence supporting its closure and as little time as possible for its defenders. It was great to see my beloved Barney Hughes, and I thought the rest of the enormous cast was quite wonderful.

Now I want to watch Les enfants du paradis again, but I can't see it tonight: MILDRED PIERCE is on.

Blurb two just arrived:

Hooray! Kimmel's  charmingly eccentric  young sleuth Adriana Hofstetter is back for a new walking (and bus-riding) Hollywood murder tour. This time she's celebrating her sixteenth birthday by shaking the dust off of the decades-old unsolved homicide of a venomous acting coach. A funny, fast-paced, neatly-plotted whodunit.

DR George, a movie that I believe you were serching for a few years back, RING OF FIRE (1961) is airing in TCM soon, for your FYI.

I remember liking this movie a lot (and of course, it was filmed in Oregon). I have already set my DVR!

I remember when they made this one.  I was still living in Seattle and was very taken by Andrew Stone's work and how he shot everything on location.

I love THE LAST VOYAGE.

I'm sure RING OF FIRE will wind up in Warner Archive one of these days.

I loved TiHE LAST VOYAGE, although watching it now, it doesn't hold up nearly as well as I remembered it.
And it was rather sad to see the damage they did to the Ile de France in the name of filmmaking.  A sad end to a ship that saved a great many lives from the Andrea Doria.

Thanks everyone.  I'm fine, we are fine.  There was a lot of damage around Iowa. It's sad.  The tornado that hit Mapleton, Ia was 3/4 mile wide and 60% of the town has been either damaged or destroyed.  There were two or three other towns hit as well.  All in all there were 29 tornadoes last night.

Well, DR MBARNUM.....I think said actress is pulling your proverbial leg.....Mr Mark Hanna wrote AOTFFW for Miss Allison Hayes (his then girlfriend) - if this other hussy heard her agent talking about a role, it was probably the one that Yvette Vickers played in the movie.....

She better be careful who she repeats this story to - you cannot rewrite Classic Cinema Historie.

Today I gave the Apple G4 to my two nephews who did not have a computer.  Both of them are in high school and the family shares ONE computer, so now they can have their own time.  They are PC people, but I imagine they can get going on the Apple fairly quickly....I included the manual on CD....and I haven't gotten any calls about it yet.

I love that movie and love Bliztstein's score. Robbins was in the company with Patti LuPone when it was revived and that great cast recording made.

I will say that listening to the soundtrack of "The Cradle Will Rock" is not as pleasant as watching it incorporated into the movie. -At least for me. Some of the treatments of the songs just don't sit right on my ears. Or something like that.

Well, the 5 and a half - or was it six and a half? - hour long MILDRED PIERCE just ended and it's truly amazing. If she isn't one of literature's stupidest characters, I don't know who is! Jane Austen's heroine of NORTHANGER ABBEY is awfully stupid, as is DAVID COPPERFIELD's "child bride" who dies far too late in the novel to suit me, but Mildred is an enormous idiot at times, completely clueless.

I loved every minute of it, but her co-dependent relationship with her daughter Veda can be a trial: Mildred gets a kick out of suffering over Veda and Veda gets a kick out of putting her mother down. Unlike the Joan Crawford version, in this one, Veda gets the last turn of the screw and it's a goodie! Those DRs waiting for the DVD are in for a treat.

It's one of my least favorite G&S operas, but a great parody of Verdi opera, especially IL TROVATORE. I don't know what version you're watching, so I have no idea whereof you speak.

I liked it too. And it basically explains why I stopped buying DVDs. I still like going to a movie theatre and watching a movie on the big screen. And if I don't happen to catch a movie while it's in the theatres, well... Another "must-see" will come along soon enough. -And I don't have as many DVDs sitting in their cases unwatched for weeks, months, years at a time.

Well, the 5 and a half - or was it six and a half? - hour long MILDRED PIERCE just ended and it's truly amazing. If she isn't one of literature's stupidest characters, I don't know who is! I loved every minute of it, but her co-dependent relationship with her daughter Veda can be a trial: Mildred gets a kick out pf suffering over Veda and Veda gets a kick out of putting her mother down. Unlike the Joan Crawford version, in this one, Veda gets the last turn of the screw and it's a goodie! Those DRs waiting for the DVD are in for a treat.
Can't wait to see it. Veda may get the last word in this one, but I loved seeing Ann Blyth get hers in the Joan Crawford version.

There's nothing as good in this version as the scene between Crawford and Blyth on the stairs with the check. And I missed Eve Arden. Of course, that film bears as much resemblance to the novel as I do to Brad Pitt, so this one has its compensations.

Every time I think about The Friends of the Library I hear "He gave River City the library building, but he left all the books to her" go through my head

He gave River City the liberry building!

Yes, that's right...the voice in my head doesn't say it that way, lol

I am watching a 1948 Bollywood film about a God who is on earth as a man and whose wife has been abducted by a demon. Now a human monkey is trying to rescue the woman while having his tail set of fire and burning down an entire island kingdom.

A talking bear, a talking vulture, a flesh eating demoness, and a one eyed creature all make appearences in between multiple songs and some dances.

Oh, and some of the guys are rather attractive and bare chested.

Hmmm... That sounds like the bar on the Lower East Side I was at last weekend.

And Ann Blyth gets life for killing Monty, who stays alive and well in the novel. Guy Pierce is a very photogenic Monty. I really liked Brian O'Byrne as Mildred's husband Bert.

It's amazing in this series how many times Mildred sees Veda behaving badly - one character even tells Mildred to forget her because she's a total snake - and keeps coming back for more crap from her!

There is no one like Eve Arden. A friend of mine who had never heard of her (!?) just loved her independent nature in that movie.

I feel so much better just having put that down in words.  Thanks. ;D

I truly forgot how many games there are to play, I was married for so long, I truly forgot and found myself constantly saying "I don't know what that means".

I think I'm now in a mess.

The trick always is to see it coming, learn, and do what you need to do.  While that is sometimes easier said than done, in the end you must do what you need to - it's all about what's truly important, and if games have suddenly entered the equation, they are never worth playing.

My sister's boyfriend and I got my sister's old refrigerator into her garage.  And it turns out that her new fridge was already installed by the delivery people, so that's all done. :)

Tonight's rehearsal went quite well.  I just need a vest to go with my trapper outfit, and I'm all done...costume-wise.

But there were about FIVE guys there planning on being Mayor Shinn.....not counting who may show up tomorrow night....so we shall see.

I love the show so much, I wouldn't mind playing another part (fewer lines to learn).

But as I said to my friend Jim (another Shinn candidate) as the terrible readings and bad singing droned on:  "Do we really want to spend six weeks backstage with these people?"

I really enjoy being in Cannibal!, but I have to admit that I've never been in a show with SO many people who can't sing!  The leading actress also can't count to save her life...they've had to add a couple of other people to sing with her on her solo!  And a couple of the miners mangle the melody on one of their songs.  There's a lot of energy, but not many accurate pitches. :-X

I will say that listening to the soundtrack of "The Cradle Will Rock" is not as pleasant as watching it incorporated into the movie. -At least for me. Some of the treatments of the songs just don't sit right on my ears. Or something like that.
I agree with you. But the Patti LuPone recording with the Acting Company is wonderful.

I agree...and I love the PBS showing of that production with John Houseman introducing the show with the story of opening night.

I went to Target earlier and picked up Mad Men Season 4 for $19.99.  I'll just put it with the other 3 seasons to watch eventually!

Well, you've got plenty of time before next season...season five won't be broadcast until 2010.
