My ask BK ????

I see that a certain film review website is looking for reviewers. I believe you have been out spoken at the site before.

I thought it might be interesting if you became a reviewer there using a nom de plume and review the quality of releases like you do here. Maybe it will shake things up. Maybe you can be the new god replacing their current God Harris

So what do you think?

Good morning, all! I slept rather well. Around 12:30 I was up to check the windows; the torrential rain was pounding on the glass and I wanted to be certan I had no leaks. It was quite noisy. I had a long, peculiar dream of being in a classroom, trying to supervise copying of Victor Herbert scores and staying out of the instructor's way.

This morning, I have some photocopying of several Appalachian carols at Staples. Then, at 3, a meeting at 21st and Fifth Avenue about this Appalachian carol project. I really hate late afternoon meetings and the director and I need to discuss this schedule.

More coffee.

They have exactly the sorts of "reviewers" that all these sites have - that's what they want - they don't want people who really understand transfers and film.

They tried to get me go to jury duty,
But I said, "No, no, no..."

Actually, the Camden County Court web site told me "No, no, no...", so I didn't have to go.  I'm kind of disappointed, actually.

It was a great story. Strouse uses/reuses plenty of his melodies for other and often better purposes, doesn't he?

Why would you waste valuable time watching something icky like ISHTAR when you have a wonderful DVDr of Universal's 1944 murder-mystery-musical MURDER IN THE BLUE ROOM just waiting to be viewed.

BK,

I haven't seen ISHTAR in years.

I saw it on home video...not in the theater.

Certainly it's no "classic"...but (its budget aside) I don't recall it being the total disaster that you and most of the critics claim it to be.

Thinking back, I thought there were a few very funny moments in the picture.

Bottom line: the movie, I thought, was just okay...not good...but not that bad either.

I had a similar reaction to HEAVEN'S GATE.

Both films have their individual problems, but they are also both "watchable," and somewhat entertaining.

I think the problem with these overly expensive pictures is that, with the huge amounts of money they cost and the talent involved, "great" things are expected.

That doesn't always happen.

I wonder how a person who does not know the history of ISHTAR and HEAVEN''S GATE would view them today.

I've been to another frustrating day at the Staples copy center. Getting help when things so frequently go wrong there is so not in the employees' plans for the day, no matter if you've got the only machine currently working on hold while you wait for assistance and the line waiting for the copier grows longer. It's completely ridiculous.

I had a student teacher in Drama in high school who had been, briefly (one episode), a "regular" on Lawrence Welk with her singing partner.  They did "You've Got Possibilities" and made the mistake of ruffling Mr. Welk's hair and attempting to untie his tie during the bit.  I'm not sure if it ever aired, but the teacher (whose name I have forgotten) said they were quickly shown the door.  :)

Actually, what are your favorite Charles Strouse songs - I may have forgotten something splendid.

BK, if you want to go in a different direction, do you know his opera, Nightingale (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/Nightingale/Original-London-Cast/e/605288132728/?itm=26&USRI=nightingale)?  The CD is supposed to be the complete (or near complete) show.  "A Singer Must Be Free" (it's called "An Artist Must Be Free" in the vocal score, which I have somewhere) is a beautiful piece...in my humble opinion. :) You'd need a soprano, though...not a belter.  Sarah Brightman was in the original London cast production and is on the recording.

Got the bad news that a friend of mine had a massive stroke yesterday and is not expected to make it. I went off to the hospital to see him, and his sister was in the room talking about how the same thing had happened to her and she's up and active. The family is Catholic and she had been given last rites.

Still, I don't think Richard is going to make it. He's only 53.

Back from errands and whatnot, a nice lunch, and shall now listen to more songs.  Outside, tree people have removed two of the huge palm trees in the yard - they were so huge that they were pushing a common fence into my neighbor's yard - he's been bugging me about it so we finally have taken care of it.  The tree person told me that he found six huge disgusting dead rats when they removed the palm trees - luckily, nowhere near the house.  I may have some pest control people come and spray back there, just to be safe.

Spray?  I have never heard of rat spray.  Safe may not be the right word here.  I wouldn't want you killing the neighbor's cat.

And then there is the song from THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED MINSKY'S that turned up in Annie!

i've always preferred the late great Lillian Hayman version!

The song from Minsky's  is "You Rat You" whose tune became "Something Was Missing" from Annie for those that were wondering what the hell we have been talking about :-)

How about the song Jason Robards and Norman Wisedom sang in Minsky's "We are Gentleman" or something like that. Good for two men with some comic staging.

And another fun male duet "Why Can't The World Go And Leave Us Alone?" Perhaps Brent Barrett is available?

Or two songs that were put into the London production of Golden Boy: "Yes, I Can" and "There's a Party Going On"

or perhaps one of their first songs used in a show from Shoestring Revue '57 called "The Arts" originally sung by Beatrice Arthur & Dorothy Greener & Fay de Witt

Probably not...they didn't use it during the actual show.  They used it during the pre-show when people were coming into the theater and just sang it a cappella while interacting with the audience and getting them geared up for a fun night of nunnery-ness. ;)

Every once in a while, if I want a little mood enhancer, I go over to You Tube and watch the original Susan Boyle performance on BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT.  Today, while I was listening, I just happened to notice the count of how many people have watched that clip.  Today the total was 63,655,000 (and some change).  Imagine that! And there are several different cuts of that same performance, some with more set-up, etc.  So this clip in High Def, by itself, was watched by almost 64 million people.

I just tried to look up the one in Montreal. Have no idea where it is. But what I did read was that it will be in August. And that they will be alternating between French and English. And potentially they may have the same people play it in both languages.  I remember many years ago they had a big production of LES MIS and tried to do the same thing.

There were some wonderful songs on the album "Charles Sings Strouse" that are not overly familiar. "Homeless" from "Lyle," "Too Young to Be Old" from "Lady for a Day" and "The Man Who Invented Ice Cream" from "Bojangles" are three favorites.

I've always been fan of "Those Were the Days" from "All in the Family," too.

Can someone get me mp3s of these songs?
Can one e-mail mp3s?

I sent the songs plus a couple of extra, "I Want to Sleep With You Now" from "Palm Beach Story" and "Me, Oh My, Oh Man, Do I Miss Milwaukee" from "Lyle."

I never knew you could send music that way. It's easy. Almost too easy.

If you'd like to hear the song from "Nightingale" that George mentioned earlier, i have that, too. "Bring Back Birdie" and "Annie 2" as well as "Annie Warbucks."

I have all incarnations of Annie and sequel, and I issued Bring Back Birdie on CD on Varese.  I don't really have a soprano in our show, though, so I don't really need the Nightingale song.

I had quite a scare this morning.  I was trying to figure out what was causing the water on the basement floor and went into the furnace room.  I looked over and noticed that the vent from the gas water heater was coroded, separated at a joing and had holes in it.   In other words it was venting carbon monoxide into the basement!!    So, I immediately opened windows and called the plumber.  He came out with his handy roll of duct tape and made a few temporary fixes.   I had already decided to get a new water heater (the one here has a 6 year warranty and was installed in 1993).   He gave me a quote, but it seemed a bit high, so I waited until I could get to Home Depot and check out the prices.   I've decided his price is reasonable, so i'll call tomorrow and will probably get it installed tomorrow.  He said they will put in all new venting.  that's a good thing

I never did figure out the water.   I have the dehumidifier going and hopefully that will dry things out.  There has to be a leak somewhere, just not sure where

Richard and I had a delightful time at the Dayton Opera's dress rehearsal for DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT.  Our friend Sharon, a chorus regular, was right out front when the curtain went up.  The chorus, all volunteer, was very good and the principles (from out of town) were strong actors as well as singers.  The only weak one was the Duchess, whose character brought her own entertainment to the party.  Is this a typical addition to this piece?  The featured group was the brass quintet from Wright Patterson Air Force Base.  They played the triumphal march from AIDA and, of course, "Off We Go into the Wild Blue Yonder."

Me too, Ginny.  I have had the windows open a lot lately, so that has helped, no doubt.  I'm surprised the cats haven't shown any signs, they spend a lot of time down the basement

I have one upstairs near my bedroom. I'm going to get more now.  I wasn't as worried about it because I have a relatively new furnace.  Didn't even think about the water heater.

We stopped for dinner at Panera on the way to the opera and ran into Doogie Howser my cardiologist.  He was bustling around getting food for 2 and was joined by a lovely young woman - wife?  girlfriend?  sister?  colleague?

Good Evening!

Well... Another night at the restaurant, another eight hours of filling water pitchers, dropping off plates of food at the tables, and polishing wine glasses... However, it turned out to be "Broadway Diva" tonight. There were a couple of stars in and out throughout the evening. One of them was Vanessa Williams - and she actually remembered me from Carmen Jones at The Kennedy Center. :)

While I ate my lunch I read Milton Cross' synopsis of Daughter of the Regiment, in preparation for tonight's dress rehearsal.  Am I remembering correctly that this was one of Beverly Sills' early triumphs?

Yes, it was.

I remember seeing a production of Nightingale in the Terrace Theater at The Kennedy Center when I was in grade school. -And I just basically remembering seeing it - not really anything about the production. ::)

And productions happening in Australia and Montreal, Canada - the latter has it also listed as: Le cortex de la plančte X

bk - Do you have any idea who's doing the translation? And whether or not the translation will become part of the rental package?
