Good morning, all! I am not in the best of moods these days. There's big a huge crink in the EILEEN copy situation that makes me quite unhappy, and I'm tired of expending energy on jobs that don't run smoothly, tired of flogging workers for product, and I'm tired of coworkers' lies.  This is going to be a tense week. I'm not happy at the current situation at all.

So, I'm irritable and crabby.

That's my news.

Someone asked about WONDERLAND, the new Frank Wildhorn musical? After seeing the poster, several photos, and knowing the level of Mr Wildhorn's music, I have no urge to pass by the theatre. God knows what the critics are going to report, but I did enjoy this person's review:

I had purchased a TDF ticket a while back to see Wonderland. I must have been tired when I bought it because I didn't look closely enough at the final details. I thought I had purchased a Wednesday evening ticket (8pm) when, in fact, I had purchased a Wednesday afternoon ticket (2pm). The computers had come during the time I was to see the show. I took my little TDF printout, left the desktop set up until the next day and got on the F train to go to the Marquis Theatre. I then looked at the printout for the TDF ticket and noticed it was for the afternoon performance. We had just passed 23rd Street on the train. We got to 34th Street, I exited the train, went up the stairs to the downtown side and took the next F train back to 16th St. I then proceeded to set up the desktop. I think I was not destined to see the show because despite it's availability on TDF (every day for every performance) I have not purchased another ticket. I don't  think I'm missing anything.

Wonderland is, technically, Dear Wife Joy's Broadway debut.  It was cast by her company, Clemmons/Dewing.  Along with Rain and Driving Miss Daisy, they have three shows on Broadway.  It's a shame she's not in town for the opening.

As has happened twice before, talented people have decided (with no urging from me) to do a revue of my songs.  The Things We Do For Love http://www.stevenbidwell.com/ThingsWeDoForLove/Welcome.html (http://www.stevenbidwell.com/ThingsWeDoForLove/Welcome.html) plays May 2 & 3 at The Duplex in Greenwich Village.  Funny + sexy = extremely hot ticket.  Come see; say hello.

Of course all of this pales in comparison to this coming November's big production...

DR Ben - I have a feeling that the staff a the Marquis would have honored your TDF voucher as a "past date" ticket. You may have just had to wait until closer to the show time to get a replacement ticket, exact seat location.

Good morning.  I am nearly finished with laundry and have run the vacuum in the living room area - where the cats spend a lot of time.  The basement is dry but I've decided not to do any more of the clean up today.  It's supposed to rain later and I want to see if I've stopped the leak before I have to do it all over again

Later in the evening I was flipping channels and came across The Antenna Network and I had the opportunity to introduce the 3 year old to The Three Stooges. I never saw a little kid laugh so much!

He, however, did not get THE BENNY HILL SHOW, but did wonder why his Uncle Mike was laughing so much.

And speaking of an afternoon...

I'll be heading down to Lincoln Center in a few to attend a concert by the Orchestre Nationale de France. Well, I'm really going because I want to hear today's soloist, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. He's playing Beethoven 3 today. -But the other musicians on stage are supposed to be good too. ;)

I'm trying the popular no-knead bread recipe. The dough is now sitting for the next 18-hours. I hope I didn't knead it too much. I like kneading dough. It's therapeutic. I just image the faces of people who haven't hired me.

It is difficult for me to knead now.  Please let me know how the bread comes out.

Elmore, have a very....  Oh never mind.

Well, instead of a nap I went to Panera with Paul and had a wonderful Mocha with a double chocolate brownie.  Then I went for a drive, did a little pruning of dead wood in the back yard and finally sat down to relax.

George - Do critics come on opening night?
Not specifically.  We had some people come last week, a week before we opened, but it was a rehearsal and we really weren't ready and at least one review mentioned that (http://www.weeklyvolcano.com/entertainment/stage/2011/04/cannibal-the-musical-rehersal-review-theater-artists-olympia/).  A couple of the reviewers came back again on opening night and amended their reviews...for the better (http://www.weeklyvolcano.com/entertainment/stage/2011/04/cannibal-the-musical-theater-artists-olympia-final-dress-performance-review/). :)

And Jeanne wrote:

Last night I babysat little Cole so that his mummy and daddy (my neice Katie and her husband) could go out to the movies.

While putting together puzzles we had THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW on in the background. He was highly interested in the fact that in each song or musical number, everyone's clothes were the same colors

Cute.  A sign of our times too.  I doubt that would have seemed strange to us at his age.

There is a strange little hitch in that plan.  Washington's elected individuals (including the Legislators and the Governor) cannot increase or decrease their own salaries.  Many years ago, the state established a committee (made up of appointed individuals) who have the dubious honor of deciding what the elected officials will be paid.  I am sure the idea was sound, but the result has been anything but fair.

The author Guest of Honor was Joe Haldeman - the author of (amongst other things) The Forever War

He had been booked  over  a year ago  however,  he unfortunately was unable to attend due to some recent surgery --- so they held his Q & A sessions & readings by Skype.

I guess word had gotten out about his absence but not about the Skype  since only a handful of people showed up --- as a result Vixdad & I  and a few other people had the great pleasure of having     two hour long conversations with a  very interesting author and heard the first chapter of his newest novel due to be released in December.

(Washington state doesn't have a state return).

We should have moved to Washington instead of Oregon.  Maybe our next move ;)

You, however, don't have sales tax.

I'll trade. ;)  The people who live in Vancouver, WA have it made.  No income tax at home & they shop over the border.

When we were in Seattle a few years back we found out showing our Oregon driver's license meant we didn't have to pay a sales tax.

In New York if you buy things out of state and transport them back to New York  you are supposed to declare them and pay the sales tax to the state

I am not sure exactly how the process works though as I have never, NEVER EVER  purchased anything outside of the great State of New York and transported it back here

Nice for you. :)

It really was.  This convention has provide us with many nice opportunities to have conversation with people we never otherwise could have met

A few years ago a had a very interesting conversation with George Takei about his childhood growing up in a internment camp during WWII

50 Years ago today, the ground was broken to build the Space Needle.  Happy Birthday!

24 years ago today  Vixdad and I were in England celebrating our engagement at a party hosted by his Mum in her restaurant  on the Royal Showgrounds at Stoneleigh

That sounds like a very nice way to celebrate ones engagement. :)

it was!!  Since we were being married in the US there was no way for all the family and friends from Vixdad's side to attend  so we essentially had a wedding reception complete with a 2 tiered cake,  and a magnificent spread.   Only time in my life I have ever been served  (or even seen) Beef Wellington - and that was only one of about 18 entrees available

Was it a traditional English wedding fruit cake?  Do you have any photos you can easily share?

Well, instead of a nap I went to Panera with Paul and had a wonderful Mocha with a double chocolate brownie.  Then I went for a drive, did a little pruning of dead wood in the back yard and finally sat down to relax.

There has been a Panera here in Olympia for a few months, but I never went until last weekend.  I got a sandwich and it was quite good.  I'll definitely be going back again. :D

The only one I've been to was the one in Pittsburgh near Craig.  I really liked the cookies.

I tried the soup at the one in Lakewood, many years ago, and I was not impressed.  I am going to have to try them again for a sandwich.

which soup?  I like their wild rice chicken soup  and their tomato soup  alot

I don't remember.   I am thinking Clam Chowder.

Work session was really fun.  A couple of songs were easy to cut - we still have a couple too many, but we'll start figuring out the structure and once we start that process I think it will be pretty easy to figure out what else has to go.  I started the session by playing the new song - which I wrote specifically for the twelve-year-old - I felt we needed something that really set up the show and her in a friendly and fun way - something that would say what she's about, get a laugh in once section, and just be endearing.  Since her name is Melody, I'd already decided we'd call the show Melodyland, and that's the title of what will now be her opening number, because she and her folks loved it.  Now I have to record it for her, and have it taken down because I don't do music notation.

I do not remember the type of cake -  pictures are a bit of a sore point -  my MIL wanted to hire a professional photographer - my FIL , a keen photographer was insulted by this so she cancelled the photographer - and he took a couple of hundred photos of the party

He neglected to photograph the cake, the flowers, the buffet, my MIL , Vixdad or me

We do have dozens of pictures of the guests and the staff

I've been following a story on Facebook of the attempts of a group of volunteers in Ontario who are braving the cold to try and catch a lost Bernese Mountain Dog.  She has been missing since December or January.  Recent sightings increased the efforts to find her.  A group of people are attempting to hold a perimeter while dog trackers search inside of it.  She has been sighted a number of times tonight but hasn't been caught.  I guess she is too scared to go up to anyone.

A pet sitter lost her.  I hope tonight she is found.

And once I got to Lincoln Center, I met up with my friend, Michael, and we settled into our seats in Avery Fisher Hall for today's concert by the Orchestre National de France...

The first half consisted of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto with Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. The second half: Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" Suite and Ravel's "La Valse".

It was a wonderful concert.

*And even though Avery Fisher Hall is long overdue for an acoustic overhaul, it still amazes me just how much cleaner and clearer some guest orchestras sound in that hall compared to the "house band", the New York Philharmonic.

After years of surviving more than 30 rounds of cutbacks, my sister has had enough. She has been on 33 hours a week with no overtime for at least five years, though her boss was working her sometimes 60 hours or more a week and it has affected her health. His attitude: People need work, so they'll do anything to keep their jobs.

No more.

She gave her two weeks' notice on Thursday. Another employee quit the following day. A third committed suicide on Thursday (I don't know if it were work related), and a fourth quit after hearing of that. Four key players in her department in two days. I wonder if her boss is even paying attention.

I think her attitude is just fine. In the two years since I was laid off, I have come to realize more and more than we are not defined by our job. I hope she starts writing again. I know it's a skill of hers.

I wonder how Wonderland managed to get Isherwood instead of Brantley - the latter would have, I think, killed the show.  Isherwood's review, although not favorable, has pull quotes.  I would think that any new B'way musical would automatically get the first string critic - unless some producer is paying someone to have it be otherwise.

Well, Brantley got The Book of Mormon, Anything Goes, Marie and Bruce, The Motherf*cker with the Hat, Sleep No More (which really surprised me since it's a decidely off-off-Broadway venture), Arcadia, How to Succeed..., and Catch Me If You Can - and most likely Jerusalem. So...

I'm just wondering how the rest of the Broadway openings will be divvied up: High, Sister Act, Born Yesterday, The House of Blue Leaves, and Baby It's You!

The weekend went so fast.  Most of what I had planned to do did not get done.  I seem to be spending a lot of time just listening to music and sitting during the cd's.   I can't sing along with them as I'm tone deaf, so what's going on.   Maybe I just need the rest and this is my way of being lazy.  Anyway, I'm enjoying it.

Did take 2 walks in the beautiful sunshine.

And seem to always be available if he calls.  Must stop that.  Maybe that's why people plan dates.

Saw saturn at the astronomy meeting Friday night.  Very very cool.
