Well, you've read the notes, the notes gave it the old college try, and now it is time for you to post until the college cows come home.

Good morning, all! My day is looking to be an unpleasant one:
     1. I have several terse and tense communications to be accomplished today, none of which I look forward to.
     2. The search for the missing Victor Herbert song continues and I guess another trip to the Library of Congress is in  my very near future. Much as I like the trips, they cost money I do not have given my current job situation, even for reimbursement later.
     3.  I need to contact Ohio Light Opera, and I am not looking forward to any of it.

Damnation!

This is a hard one, since even the minor songs from Coleman's better scores are incredibly catchy.  But if I must choose:

Deep, Down Inside
I Got Your Number
Big Spender
There's Got To Be Something Better Than This
Nobody Does It Like Me
Hey There, Good Times
Thank God I'm Old
I Like Your Style

TOD: This is difficult, as DtM says. I love most every note of Cy Coleman's. Even did a paper on him in college. And then rewrote it for another class.

The whole score for On the 20th Century, especially the overture
Witchcraft
When in Rome
The Best is Yet to Come
Hey, Look Me Over
On the Other Side of the Tracks
The Truth
Big Spender
Rhythm of Life
Where Am I Going?
My Personal Property
The Late, Great State of New York
Welcome to Holiday Inn
Ride Out the Storm
Spanglish
It's Not Where You Start
Join the Circus
The Colors of My Life
Hey There, Good Times
Someone Wonderful I Missed
Lovers on Christmas Eve
My Body
Too Old for the Oldest Profession

It's too early to remember any more, like the songs on "Unsung Broadway" from that divorce court musical.

Reading about DR Ginny's birth certificate issues.

I find it extremely odd that the person at the passport office did not tell you that your birth certificate was not acceptable. I would contact the passport office.

It does seem to happen a lot that people need new proper birth certificates (i did too). But for the passport office not to tell you... well that is not fair to you. That person made a mistake.

Good Morning!

So... I apparently passed out on the sofa last night in front of the TV (the Cooking Channel) with my laptop on my lap, the lights on and my friend, Yosh, trying to gently wake me up so that I would not fall asleep in such a not-so-comfortable position. And after getting up, turning off the lights and TV and crawling into bed... Well... That was all by 11:15 last night. -I guess I was really sleepy last night. In any case...

I'm up! I'm up!... And I'm having some coffee.

I know it's not Ask BK/Ask DR Day, but...

A colleague of mine was wondering who did the orchestrations for the movie of "The Sound of Music". On the IMDB they list Irwin Kostal as the music supervisor, arranger and conductor, but there's no orchestrator credit listed - at least not on the IMDB. I know that the original Broadway orchestrations were done by Robert Russell Bennett - with the choral arrangements by Trude Rittman.

Did Kostal adapt Bennett's and Rittman's originals? Or did he start from scratch as it were?

DR elmore?

I think he started from the song sheets published and Rodgers' written copies, but I'd have to ask Bruce Pomahac, who knows all things R&H thoroughly. He might have worked from the published vocal score, but so many of the numbers were expanded and extended for the filming, although most of the arrangements don't sound much like Bennett's originals at all to me, although Trude's work sounds expanded. Keys were changed for some numbers, and I believe that Rodgers had next to no input on "I Have Confidence." Saul Chaplin implies that he and Kostal put it together from bits of the score and a tune and rough lyric that Rodgers sent to LA. How much of that's true and how much is Chaplin stressing his own importance I can't say.

TOD - There's very little Cy Coleman that I don't like.  My spirits are always lifted by "Hey There, Good Times" and "Come Follow the Band."

On November 19, 1977, Mr. Coleman was the featured artist with the Middletown Symphony Orchestra and graciously signed autographs afterwards.  He also wrote on my program the name and phone number of someone in New York who would help my friend Becky and me get tickets to I LOVE MY WIFE if we had trouble at the box office the following Wednesday.  Didn't need the help, but we sure did enjoy the show!

As I look at that program today, I am struck by a couple of things.  First of all, my late brother-in-law John played the tuba for that concert and was the orchestra's personnel manager.  There were many local musicians in the group then.  There was an article in our paper recently that there's only one person currently in the MSO who actually lives in Middletown.

You're very welcome, DR elmore. -And if I don't make it down this weekend, I will definitely have to head down the middle of next week for two days.

-Although, since it's my niece's birthday and Easter weekend, I will most likely be heading down this weekend. However, I'm also waiting on a few things and people to fall into place for the rest of this week here in NYC.

Post by: elmore3003 on April 19, 2011, 09:10:51 AM
I see on IMDB that Kostal assumes a lot of hats. I suspect some of the orchestration is his, but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't farm some of it out to friends, possibly Herb Spencer or Eddie Powell, or assistants who'd worked with him in Hollywod since MARY POPPINS.

Russell Bennett regularly used Joe Glover, Hans Spialek, and a few others when he got in a jam; Bill Brohn and Jonathan Tunick worked on the Lincoln Center SHOW BOAT with Bennett. On SOUND OF MUSIC, Rodgers told him that he wanted the entire score done by Bennett, and I suspect that was indeed the case.

I'm sure your playing the song is a memory the woman will always have.  It had to be very special for her.

It wouldn't load.  I'll have to try it later.

A favorite MAD magazine song parody title was "Hey, Overlook Me"

LOL!  And then from HOT L BALTIMORE there was "We Shall Come Over".

And these popped up on the Twitter:

DR Jennifer - we submitted our passport applications at our local county clerk's office and the person who accepted them DID look askance at my birth certificate and said it MIGHT not be accepted by the State Department.  I hoped it was just her lack of familiarity with other states, but I guess she was right...

Oh i guess i am used to the big passport offices we have here. The people are trained very well and know exactly what will be accepted.

Welcome to new DR JOSE CARLOS SIMBULAN JR

Well... According to my mother - at least when I was nine-years old - my name would have been:

DR J. CARLOS SIMBULAN, JR.

*And that was on top of the close to 20 nicknames I had somehow garnered when I was in grade school. -And then when you couple that with the whole "Are you my real cousin? or just the kid of one of my mom's best friends?" conundrum...

::)

Too confusing. ;) ;D

Tell me about it!

-Which is why, I guess, that I never really minded my household nickname, "Jojo". -And that's "Jojo", not "Jo-Jo", nor "Jo-jo". ::)

My production coordinator at the publishers has not responded to e-mails in a week - she's been out.  So all the book stuff has just been sitting there since yesterday morning, and who knows when she's coming back.  So, I had to go to BK-land for a while - her boss is now personally handling it, looked at what we sent, said it all looked great, and will now move it along.  I also got my long-time gal there involved - if I ever have probs she's the one I go to and everything gets instantly solved.

IIRC, the entire list of orchestrators can be found on the opening credits of the film.

She worked  with three incarnations of the doctor and appeared in two spinoffs. K9 and Friends and The Sarah Jane Adventures. She appeared in more episodes than any other companion.

Just checked out the "Remastered Edition" of The Boy Friend.  Um, no.  Sad to say but it's faded and brownish from its original glorious color.  Very disappointing, as many of the recent Warners transfers have gotten the color right.  All they had to do was add blue and it would have been much better.

What difference would it make to contact the passport.  Granted they should have told her, but the bottom line is that the U.S. Government will not issue her a passport with that birth certificate.

What difference would it make to contact the passport.  Granted they should have told her, but the bottom line is that the U.S. Government will not issue her a passport with that birth certificate.

I believe DR Jennifer mean to complain about the employee who accepted it.  Now we also realized DR Ginny was told it probably would not be.

::)

I never had any nicknames when i was growing up.  Unless you include faggot and sissy.

As is the case with evey day I've done laundry in the past month, it's raining.

I've made the important phone call and sent two emails to my colleague Curtis,. I'm very fond of him and I do like working with him, but things on his end are moving too slowly for my schedule, and I am very unhappy at the moment.

I hate waiting when i need answers.

All is now good. Curtis is off to England on the BAM-Royal Shakespeare Co (?) Bridge Project and his absence will make things about preparing socres for EILEEN more difficult than I would have preferred. Now that I know we're okay, I can relax a bit.

I didn't understand that statement at all.  Perhaps I should ask MBarnum to translate.

Chelsea update for those following:

Message and update from Janet

The rescue of Chelsea has many elements that have to be considered and for many reasons. We are not doing any of this without the advice of many different professionals who have carefully consulted and guided this rescue.

It does not matter how long this takes, it will be up to Chelsea who gives the sign that she is comfortable with what is being done and when she is ready. All of this is being done on her terms not ours.

First of all, Heather does want me to convey her apologies as she knows that she has been short with some and just not herself. She has been sleeping in her car, she is stressed and sleep deprived This is a very emotionally charged situation This family still has not had time to grieve over the loss of their husband and father, and then thrown into an emotional turmoil with not knowing what happened to Chelsea. All of this pain and suffering caused because of someone else’s negligence.

I hope that we can all learn from this experience both the good and the bad as it will help us all when other lost and missing pets need your help or to be rescued.

This is what I am sharing with you today.

Based on the professional’s who have observed Chelsea’s behavior and actions they know that they have to secure her mind before her body for this to be a success. Remember she has survived only because she reverted to a wild state because she had to.

Remember that she is also Joan’s companion and needs to be brought to a state that Joan will be able to handle her when she is brought home. This will also be a process, so it is not just about “catching the dog”.

We again ask every one to stay away from the area unless we specifically ask you to be there. The neighbors have been wonderful opening their homes and have even provided food, drink, bathroom facilities so all their needs are being met. The police have been wonderful and supportive patrolling the area to keep the surrounding area the way Daryl wants it.

Daryl has been making encouraging progress with Chelsea and is slowly getting closer to her. He is now controlling her food. She is eating nutritious food rich in protein and drinking water that he is providing for her. He provided her with a blanket and she chose to touch it with her paw. She is acting secure in the ravine and she is aware of his presence and his scent.

He reports this morning that her tail was up, she looked happy and was chasing a squirrel in the ravine, not because she wanted to kill it, she was acting in a more playful manner.

Heather, Joan and Team Chelsea have complete trust and faith in Daryl and what he is doing for Chelsea and for all of us. We will not allow any one to sabotage the progress that he is making with Chelsea. We appreciate your concern and interest and ask you to stay away from the area.

Along this incredibly emotional journey to find Chelsea, Team Chelsea is happy to report that through our dedicated team members we were also there to help many other pets that we encountered along the way. We found lost and injured dogs and cats and we cared for them until we could help them and get them back to their families. We had a team member who fortunately could secure a surrender of a dog that was in dire need of help who also required immediate medical care and needs surgery. We are happy to report this dog now has a happy and a very loving forever home and the means to provide him with all the rehabilitation that he will require.

The last thing I want to share with you is about our amazing man Daryl. We are so blessed to have Daryl who is so dedicated and committed to rescuing Chelsea.

What you need to know is that Daryl is dying. Daryl has been told that he has 6 to 7 weeks left to live. It is Daryl’s dying wish to bring Chelsea home. Daryl and Chelsea need each other now this is now their journey. We hope that both Daryl and Chelsea’s wishes are granted, we owe that to them both. They have both been going through so much. It is Daryl’s wish that Chelsea’s transition be peaceful and gentle.

It is our wish that Daryl’s will be also.

What we need to do is keep them both in our thoughts and prayers so that both Daryl and Chelsea can find what they need to complete their journeys. Don’t question why things happen, there are no coincidences all things happen for a reason.

We love you Daryl.

Janet

I was called Janie, which I didn't like and put a stop to it.  Very few people still call me that.

I was called Bozo in 5th grade when my hair was frizzed/permed into what looked exactly like Bozo the Clown's hair style.

Then there was that embarrassing name Bruce gave me. ;)

Probably all for the best. I had removed a critical mid sentence. Curtis' going to London next week has caused me major tsuris about the music prep for the EILEEN recording. i think things are satisfactorily settled now.

Just checked out the "Remastered Edition" of The Boy Friend.  Um, no.  Sad to say but it's faded and brownish from its original glorious color.  Very disappointing, as many of the recent Warners transfers have gotten the color right.  All they had to do was add blue and it would have been much better.

I've got that.  Planning to watch it (probably) tomorrow.

My first landlady in Oxford, Ohio, was a collector of varieties of DaVinci's "The Last Supper," which covered - and littered - her house as antimacassars, paint-by-numbers, bowls,  ash trays, plates, velvet paintings, fabrics, etc. It was a trip to pay the rent.

DR Jose, I need a rehearsal studio next Wednesday and the 72nd Street Studios are booked. Got any ideas? I just need room for three people, a CD player and a piano.

DR elmore - Check with:

Pearl Studios (http://pearlstudiosnyc.com/) (33rd & 8th)
Ripley-Grier (http://www.newyorkspaces.com/main.php) -Which is the company that runs 72nd Street Studios. They have three other locations.
Shetler Studios (http://www.shetlerstudios.com/)
Roy Arias Studios (http://royariasstudios.com/)

Etc., etc., etc.

DR Jane - In happier Bernese news...

When I walking around yesterday, "Eli" decided to sit down and take a rest right on the corner of Broadway and 79th. Of course, since Eli was so cute and handsome, everyone else walking by wanted to stop and say, "Hello", and pet him - myself included. -Which, of course, made him not want to get up again. It was fun wasthing his owners - a mother and her two girls - trying to get Eli to get up and start walking with them again.

Actually...

I called my Mom earlier to see what they had planned for Easter this weekend, as well as to see if they were heading up to Fairfax for my niece's - their granddaughter's - birthday. Well... My Mom actually told me that I did not need to come down for Easter this year, nor for my niece's birthday - since they weren't having a party this weekend. And since my Mom doesn't really do the "I say this, but I mean that" thing, well...

And since this is Easter weekend... And since I'd rather not travel on a Friday, let alone Good Friday... And since I have to make a trip back to DC for some business at Arena Stage next week... Well...

???

Back from a seder.  I only watched the first ten minutes of The Boy Friend - I'll see if I agree about the color improving - and it's not really a question of saturation it's a question of accuracy, skin tones, and too much Eastman color brown (what happens when an internegative fades) - there is color in the film, don't get me wrong - it's just not accurate - the original prints looked just like Technicolor.
