Title: A JEW SATED
Post by: bk on April 20, 2011, 12:00:17 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both Jewish and sated and nobody passed over them, and now it is time for you to post until the stated cows come home - they ate way too much MOOtzo.

Good morning, all! I was successfully out of bed by 6:15, and I am now bathed, shaved, dressed and on my first cup of coffee. I guess I'm back on my sleeping schedule and happy to be so.

I have to be out of the apartment around 8:15, for a morning of errands. When I return, around noon, I'll call for a studio. DR Jose, thanks for the studio info!

I've been studying this "Blarney" song from Ohio Light Opera, and I don't think the song is by Victor Herbert; the harmony seems wrong, and I'm wondering who wrote it. It's also possible the melody is Herbert's and the harmonization by someone else, but I will continue to check the Herbert Findng Aid from the Library of Congress for the song.

More coffee!

Wednesday morning greetings!  Our tornado sirens sounded just before 1am and again just past 1:30 and we had a doozy of a thunderstorm.  High winds, but no trip to Oz.  Speaking of trips, I'm off today to Cleveland after going with Mom to visit my aunt (her sister).  Today is Aunt Jo's 82nd birthday.

I made do with one seder this year, the one on Monday night in New Jersey.

We went to a big gathering for Passover of a bunch of other crazy vegetarian Jews.  Nonetheless Gefilte Fish was served.  I passed.  We did the "30 minute Seder" this year which, in true Jew fashion, took about an hour.  ;)  There were also interpolated parody songs which could have come from the pen of FJL, once again under the influence of hallucinogenics.  ;)

DRs Ginny and JRand - Glad to read that last night's weather in your area was more annoying than damaging. -I just saw the news reports about the tornados that struck various parts of the midwest last night.

Travel vibes for DR GINNY.

Yes, last night our doorbell rang in the middle of a rainstorm - it was 1:30 a.m.  It was the police saying that we needed to get our car off the street because the water was rising.

Of course it was not our car parked in front of our house - it was our neighbor's car.  The policeman went to wake them up, and eventually they moved their car up the street away from the water.

The water did indeed creep into our front yard just as it did two years ago.....but it finally went down about 3:30 a.m.  The storm drains are still clogged and I suppose I could go out and clean them out - but maybe the street department will be here some time today to do so.

We don't expect any more rain until Friday.  If I haven't seen them by this time tomorrow, I will clean out the drains.

And now a word from our sponsor...

Well... Not really...

But here's a plug for an app/groupon/website that just expanded to a bunch of other cities.

Scoutmob (http://scoutmob.com/revel/josespiano)

Scoutmob started in Atlanta - just ask DR edisaurus - and then went on to New York City and San Francisco. A few weeks ago, they just launched in Boston, Washington, DC, Chicago, Nashville, Dallas, Austin, Denver, Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle.

Every couple of days, Scoutmob posts a deal on their website/app, and all you have to do to claim it is click on it - or just open up their app on your smartphone. Most of the offers are restaurant-related - 50%-off your meail, but they also have some retail store and spa deals from time to time too. Best of all, there's no fee to claim or use the deal. You just have to sign up via email. -And the only emails they send out are about their deals - no spam.

Was doing some research last night and discovered there was a Bollywood version of HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, titled BADSHAH, made in 1954 starring Pradeep Kumar.

It is not yet out on DVD, but hopefully one day!

There was also a 1950s  Bollywood version of FRANKENSTEIN in the works, to star Sheikh Mukhtar. It was advertised as "in production", but looks like it never saw that light of day. I have been in contact with Mr. Mukhtar's son and I am hoping he can shed some light on this proposed film.

DR Jose "Eli" reminds me of Sherlock when he doesn't want to move.  Yesterday knowing I would be backtracking a section of the trail I put a leash on him.  As soon as I began the backtrack I got yanked to a sudden stop, turned around to see Sherlock's feet firmly planted into the ground with that "now way!" expression on his face.  ;D  We did go the way I wanted. :)

In the I-watched-it-myself-and-discovered department:  the IMDb credits for "The Sound of Music" are complete.  There are NO (read that None, Zero, Nil) orchestration credits on the film proper.

That said, given Saul Chaplin's co-producer credits, it seems possible to me that he may have lent a hand, albeit an uncredited one.  It's hard to imagine Herbert Spencer and Edward B. Powell doing work on a film without credit since both had been well-credited in many other films before TSOM, presumably a union requirement.  But, stranger things....

There is one IMDb credit that is highly suspect, however:  Original Music: Irwin Kostal.  There is no such credit in the film for "original music" by Kostal.

I, too, watched "The Boy Friend" last night.   It's one of a few films that cause me to grin from start to finish.  It's so wonderful.  It's so joyous.  It's a perfect vision, IMO.

I was wishing my 37-inch screen was a lot larger last night.   I wanted to be enveloped by it.   It's not an ultimate, near-ultimate, nor even a perfect presentation.   The sound should be stereophonic and I think they could have found a better master (or, hey!  Why not the negative?).  There were a couple of quick jumps in the first number I don't recall seeing on the LD video.  Otherwise, it seemed complete (except for that odd fade before Intermission -- Bruce?  Is that the way it was??)

The cast is as perfect as any I could imagine.  Twiggy, Christopher Gable, Antonia Ellis and Tommy Tune are all young and wonderful.  The dancing is a dream given that this was a 2nd-rate (at best) theatrical company (with an apparently BRILLIANT art director doing its sets).  The fantasy sequences are a major joy (only one seems a bit prolonged, and that's the forest idyll fantasy).  This film represent Ken Russell's genius perfectly.  Max Adrian, Vladek Sheybal, et al, are simply wonderful.

Being a standard (albeit anamorphic 16 X 9) transfer, it didn't up-convert as well as other standard DVDs have done when played in my Blu-ray player, but to have it is the thing.  And happily we now have it.

I'm a bit late signing on this morning.

I was busy typing my 1-person Errol Flynn play, which I wrote back in the 1980s, into my Mac.

That's done...but, I think I'll do some minor revisions, before I upload it to CreateSpace.

I think a few moments can be "improved."

Interesting, but Flynn's downfall reminds me a lot of Charlie Sheen.  There are some definite parallels.

Unbelievable but true department:  the new house came with a "home warranty," albeit one so expensive (due to the size of the home) that we agreed to pay half of the yearly fee ourselves.  (Usually the seller pays it all).  Anyhoo, made three service calls during the year and quickly found out they cover next to nothing.  The third call was for a faulty light switch which I told them worked intermittently.  They dispatched the electrician and he could not make it malfunction.  He called AHS and their "service counselor" (that's a laugh and a half) told him NOT to make any repairs.  Due to that, I opted not to renew coverage.  Lo and behold, what should arrive yesterday but a BILL for the service call!!!  I called their 800 number and got a snotty operator who hung up on me.  So I looked up their corporate HQ and got through to the snotty assistant to the President who was quite full of attitude until I asked what state they were incorporated in and who their corporate counsel was.  The snotty assistant claims the fee has been waived ;), but we shall see.

We had AHS when we lived in Los Angeles, and we were very unhappy with the service.

The technicians were always looking for an excuse to claim that the problem was not covered by the warranty.

That way, they could charge their regular fee...and AHS would always back them up.

The snotty assistant claims the fee has been waived ;), but we shall see.
gotta love it. Or cry.

I know there are some "Over Here" fans in our midst. If you are one of them, go over to bluegobo.com. The new video posted today is of Donna McKechnie and Wayne Cilento doing "Charlie's Place." The dancing is great, but the cameraman doesn't seem to know how to photograph dancing. The cuts are weird, but the extended piece, with Patricia Birch's choreography, really kicks.

Well... The sun is trying to make an appearance in the skies above New York City. Alas, it looks like the sun's efforts will just end up resulting in a brief thunderstorm later.

Does any DR know if that whole "Best of Broadway"/American Dance Machine special is available on DVD?I seem to remember Wayne Cilento performing "I Can Do That" from A Chorus Line, as well as the original trio of girlfriends performing "You Could Drive A Person Crazy" from Company.

As far as I know, it's not.  I have the (purchased, not a copy) videotape and my sister's boyfriend made a DVD of it with a nifty chaper menu.

What did you get?  I really like the base & cord on my new T-Fal.  The steamer was nice too.  Other than that I'm not too sure.  It could be I don't push down hard like I used to & no iron will give me a crisp smooth look.

A friend of mine could use some mega vibes.  She had surgery last year & it seemed sure they got all the cancer out that she didn't need chemo or radiation.  Typically this is the scenario for the type of cancer she has.  It has now returned and spread requiring a more complicated surgery.  Now my friend has one more chemo prior to beginning radiation.  :(

TCB how is your sister?

She is still waiting to see the specialist.  Although it turns out that her regular doctor is dyslexic.  She wrote that sister's white blood cells and platlets were elevated, wheh she actually meant below normal.  She still has the elevated enzymes in her liver.

Does any DR know if that whole "Best of Broadway"/American Dance Machine special is available on DVD?I seem to remember Wayne Cilento performing "I Can Do That" from A Chorus Line, as well as the original trio of girlfriends performing "You Could Drive A Person Crazy" from Company.
that would be great to have.

What's it worth to ya??

;)
Gratitude. And the copying/mailing?

Well, first I have to find it. ::)

Actually, I'm pretty sure that I know where it is. :)

Middling reviews for "Sister Act" and not pretty notices for "Seance on a Wet Afternoon." Still, I bet "Sister Act" will be a hit. the complaints about it are similar to those lodged against the movie, which the public loved.

I have decided I just don't have time to make the dessert I wanted to for Sunday, because it takes three days. Now I have to come up with something less complicated. But just as good. Any suggestions? I bought a few cheeses in case I truly run out of time.

DR John G - 1) Which "takes three days" dessert were you originally planning to make? 2) How about a Hungarian Shortbread? -The kind where you mix up the dough, freeze it, then grate it into the pan before baking? There's a great recipe in "Baking with Julia". -And you can use either homemade or store-bought preserves as the filling.

And if you wanted to go ahead and bring the cheeses, you could also make your own crackers and/or accompaniments (chutneys, pickled onions/ramps, nut brittles, etc.).

I was going to make something called a domino cake. On day one, you make a pair of raspberry jelly rolls and freeze them.

Second day, you make a panna cotta like cream filling with about 16 egg yolks and more gelatin than you can imagine. Then you slice the jelly roll real thin, line the slices along the bottom and sides of a 10-inch pan. Fill with the cream filling. Then let it set over night.

Day three you finish off the top with more jelly roll slices and invert the cake onto a serving platter. Top with an apricot glaze and serve with raspberry sauce.

The Hungarian Shortbread sounds good. I'll do an investigation. For the cheeses, i always put out the same: nuts, dark chocolate bits, honey, dried fruit. Chutney sounds like a good addition, though. I think I have a couple of jars.

ASK BK

When considering albums from UA/MGM did you consider A Funny THing Happened On the Way To Th Forum? If you did was the rewritten FREE part of the masters? Was there any other Sondheim score other than The Chase  there too?

No - they only have the album master and it's of no interest to me at all.

My question for MR BK - did you ever write a script on assignment or spec for an ongoing television series?

And if you could have been a regular member of the writing staff of a classic television show, which show would it have been?

Nope, no spec script for a series.  And I would not have liked to have been on staff for any series - too many cooks.  In charge?  Absolutely.

Long, long day.  I don't even remember when I posted last.  I had a sandwich and onion rings, picked up a couple of packages, and then just started to work and never stopped for a moment.  I did the second set of liner notes, I finished watching The Boy Friend, and then I spent four hours watching an hour and forty minute movie, watching along with the music cue sheets and trying to figure out how the soundtrack album was put together - this for an upcoming release.  The decision I have to now make is whether to keep the album in the sequence done by the composer or undo those edits and do strict film order with about eight minutes of additional cues.  I actually like the original album sequence quite a bit, and I understand why the additional cues were left off (repetitions of themes already there and some short cues), but I love every minute of them.  If I keep the original sequence, then we'll include the additional cues as bonus tracks.  If I end up doing film order complete, then I'll also include the album edits of certain tracks so we maintain those.
