Day Off Today.
Working on a scene from my play with an actor who will play all the roles which was the original concept for the play.
Bringing my car in to get the bumper fix.
My life is so exciting I can hardly stand it.
-
I hope everyone here at HHW has an exciting day that they can hardly stand it.
If you can't. Trying sitting.

Tuesday morning greetings! My sister and I have decided to stay in today and rest up for our big trip to Lansing tomorrow. We're going to have lunch with Mary Linda and her Mom, do some genealogy research at the State Library of Michigan, and maybe visit a rehearsal dinner venue with ML after she gets off work.
-
Thanks for the birthday greetings DRs Ben, Vixmom and Michael S!

And the word of the day is: ANNEAL!
And The Song Of The Day Is: PICK YOURSELF UP

Happy Birthday, Jennifer! Please post a photo of the birthday cake tonight!

Thanks for the Google tip, Vixmom.
-
BK, have you decided what the June Gardenia show is going to be?
-
Happy Birthday, Jennifer!

TOD:
You're tired!
For the last week or so, my dog has been waking us up once or twice in the middle of the night to let her out.
Then, at 6 am on the dot, our alarm clock [CORRECTION: our cat] starts yelling to be let out of the guest bathroom.
-
Good morning, all! I am off my sleep schedule and not happy about it. I've also paid all my bills and purchased the CAMELOT CD from the big check that finally arrived yesterday, and I'm broke again. Oy! I'm sure the stress over this check has been a big part of the sleeping problem, but I am going through a period of slow work and little income. This is the first year in some time that my phone's not ringing with either an inquiry or a job. Both Gregg Edelman and Brent Barrett contacted me earlier in 2011 about work - a couple of charts for Gregg for a benefit and Brent wanted his Christmas charts for less than 10 players turned into charts for pops symphonies - but nothing's happened. Liz Callaway had asked me about expanding a 15-player chart for "Being Alive" for a pops concert, and after I'd begun the work, she cancelled it because she'd decided that simply increasing the number of string parts would do. It may save her money but it certainly does no good for me having the arrangement credit on what I consider a lousy solution. 40 strings playing parts written for originally seven players and ignoring the fact there are no brass players except for one trumpet is not a good solution.
So, let's see what fresh hell the day brings, shall we? I'm off to the library. I didn't get there yesterday, and I have more meds waiting at the pharmacy.
DR John G, I was unlucky enough to see the original Public Theatre production of "The Human Comedy" for three reasons: my friend the late Ken Bryan was in it, I like a lot of Galt McDermott's music, and the reviews had been excellent. It was one of the worst pieces of crap I've ever seen, with about half of a good cast (the real stinkers were the boy from FRIGHT NIGHT and Gordon Connell), and too large a band playing too loudly in too small a space. The first trumpet shrieked nothing but high notes, with a few so high that only dogs can hear them, till I thought I'd go deaf. It stank. The movie cannot be as bad. The story was, too me, typical William Saroyan paddlin' maudlin home.

In other news...
As I referenced in my first post, I attended a performance of Richard Wagner's Die Walküre last night at The Metropolitan Opera. This is the second installment of Robert Lepage's new "Ring" Cycle (http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/broadcast/hd_events_template.aspx?id=12572) for The Met. Das Rheingold premiered last fall, and the final two operas, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, will appear next season. -With complete cycles being presented next spring.
The multi-ton "Machine" worked last night - at least mechanically speaking. There were some wonderful effects, but there were also some truly strange moments - included some projected avalanches which just seem to happen for no particular reason. And, as I felt during Das Rheingold, I felt that the machine should have been used more, or, at the very least, been more active during some of the more static scenes. Maybe Lepage is making sure that the focus remains on the singers, the voices. And as for the voices, well...
It's quite well cast vocally. Alas, it's not ideally cast vocally. There's only one true Wagnerian voice in the cast - as soon as Hans-Peter König opened his mouth as Hunding - WOW! There is a true heft and gravitas to his voice. The rest of the cast does sing quite beautifully at times - sometimes too beautifully - and even though Deborah Voigt's "Brünnhilde" may have been a bit small-voiced - especially compared to everyone else on stage - I thought she rose to the challenge of her first Brünnhilde quite nicely.
And it was nice to see Maestro James Levine back on the podium. He was in fine form last night as were his players in The Met orchestra.

DR elmore - I met Margaret Jane Wray during the first intermission. -She adores you, and sends her best.

DR elmore - I met Margaret Jane Wray during the first intermission. -She adores you, and sends her best.
And I love her! She's a truly wonderful lady.

Elmore, the movie of "The Human Comedy" was more maudlin than the book. And I can certainly understand what you have to say about the band for the musical version. It took me a few listens to get past that and hear how good the music is. I think the whole piece needs to be reorchestrated. It was not a period sound and it seemed to rub that aspect into your face (or ears).

And in other other news...
Arena Stage's production of Oklahoma! won the Helen Hayes Award for Best Resident Musical last night. -Well, it actually share that honor with the Shakespeare Theatre's production of Candide. Oklahoma! also picked up HHAs for Outstanding Leading Actor, Musical Direction(!) and Choreography!
Hmmm.. I wonderf if this coming remount could be considered in the revival category next year? ;)

DR JohnG - Any plans - or non-plans - for your post-paper time?
Next semester starts in May. I will have two classes, one on the Jazz Age (Stein, Hemingway, Hughes, Hurston and a section on the blues). The other is on the cultural theory of cookbooks. I'm setting up that class myself, with the point being that I finish this cookbook of my mother's. I've been working on it for two years, but having a deadline could help me finish it and shape it.

Must start the day. And I'm almost BK tired, still.
-
DR JohnG and elmore - I worked on a production of The Human Comedy a couple of years ago. It took a while for me to truly get it, but once I did, well... "Long Past Sunset" still makes me tear up. -And that whole final sequence... I don't think I've seen a cast cry more on stage during a closing night performance. -And we were crying in the pit too.
-And our pit consisted of: Piano, Keyboard/Synth, Violin (Fiddle), Guitar, Bass, and Percussion/Set. It worked quite nicely.

We had a fun rehearsal last night.
Although the director decided that she would stage both IOWA STUBBORN and WELLS FARGO WAGON.....along with the scenes those songs are in......it was quite an eye opening experience for her....and the "choreographer".

Thanks DR Laura. Actually I don't think I"m having a cake.
My mom made a honey cake so that I would have it for breakfast. My niece brought me a piece of a cake. And think at dinner there will just be a big brownie but no cake.
I did look at Costco for a cake that would appeal to me. But i really like cheesecake. And for some reason right now they only have mango cheese cakes.

Is the whole score as upbeat as the number they did on THE VIEW? If so, I'll consider buying the CD and putting it on my iPod for walking music. By the way, I never watch THE VIEW at home, but my sister had it on this morning and I enjoyed seeing Bette Midler and the Priscilla bits.

Just finished hand washing, drying and packing up seven boxes of glasses from Sunday's dinner plus various and sundry other glasses that somehow got used. I was planning on keeping this simple. It ended up with 12 of us and 15 bottles of wine. How does that happen?
Thankfully it was a great night.

Just recorded the song I wrote for the twelve-year-old Melody. I really like it a lot. We're calling her show Melodyland and here's the lyric I wrote:
When my parents named me Melody
They sealed my fate
For when you’ve got a name like Melody
Then melody’s on your plate
Ever since I can remember
I’ve wanted to sing and perform
Yes, ever since I can remember
I’ve been singing up a storm
I wake up singin’ a song
And I keep on singin’ as the day goes along
So just give me some words and give me a tune
And you can bet you’ll find me sailin’ over the moon
To Melodyland
Where I can sing any song that I happen to choose
Melodyland
Where there is never a worry or care or the blues
Where everyone’s smilin’
So come walk a mile in my shoes
Every day, music abounds
And you’ll find me dancin’ to those glorious sounds
You just give me a beat with rhythm to spare
And suddenly you’ll find that I am dancin’ on air
In Melodyland
Where any thought that you think somehow ends in a rhyme
Melodyland
Where every time there’s a key change your spirits will climb
The joint’s always hoppin’
So why don’t you stop in some time
If the day is gloomy and gray
I’ve got the antidote
Gloomy and gray stays out of my way
When I hold a money note
And I can go a half step higher, too
‘Cause that’s what I aspire to
So
Each new verse floats on the breeze
And each day you’ll find me doin’ one more reprise
When I sing and I dance, the world is all right
‘Cause when the music’s playin’ then I’m on the next flight
To Melodyland
Where every day I’m just lovin’ the life that I lead
Melodyland
When I’ve got music then I’ve got the life that I need
Where each day is tuneful
And each night is lyrical
When you’ve got music
Well, that’s just a miracle
So, won’t you join me
C’mon, mister, strike up the band
And take me to Melodyland
-
Very nice
-
Really lovely, BK!!!
-
Hope we can soon see and hear "Melody" on YouTube!

LOL, DR JRand! When I was about 13 and in need of a confirmation dress for church, I insisted that my mother make me one out of white fabric with 1" navy blue polka dots. All the other girls had pastel-colored chiffon and mine sticks out like a sore thumb in the group photo. Never again!

So I got through allergy season in SW Ohio by using my Rx nasal spray and decided last week that I no longer needed it now that the tree blooms have come and gone. Didn't realize driving 250 miles north would be like turning the clock back about 3 weeks. I wish I'd brought that med with me...

I just learned that my dear friend Russell Warner died in Seattle this morning. He's been in terrible health for a long period of time that I cannot say I am completely shocked. I am very sad.
Besides being a very dear friend, he was a talented composer and an excellent orchestrator and arranger. I will miss him enormously.

Back from some bacon and eggs and picking up a couple of packages and no mail. I shall now jog as best I can.

Just recorded the song I wrote for the twelve-year-old Melody. I really like it a lot. We're calling her show Melodyland and here's the lyric I wrote:
When my parents named me Melody
They sealed my fate
For when you’ve got a name like Melody
Then melody’s on your plate
Ever since I can remember
I’ve wanted to sing and perform
Yes, ever since I can remember
I’ve been singing up a storm
I wake up singin’ a song
And I keep on singin’ as the day goes along
So just give me some words and give me a tune
And you can bet you’ll find me sailin’ over the moon
To Melodyland
Where I can sing any song that I happen to choose
Melodyland
Where there is never a worry or care or the blues
Where everyone’s smilin’
So come walk a mile in my shoes
Every day, music abounds
And you’ll find me dancin’ to those glorious sounds
You just give me a beat with rhythm to spare
And suddenly you’ll find that I am dancin’ on air
In Melodyland
Where any thought that you think somehow ends in a rhyme
Melodyland
Where every time there’s a key change your spirits will climb
The joint’s always hoppin’
So why don’t you stop in some time
If the day is gloomy and gray
I’ve got the antidote
Gloomy and gray stays out of my way
When I hold a money note
And I can go a half step higher, too
‘Cause that’s what I aspire to
So
Each new verse floats on the breeze
And each day you’ll find me doin’ one more reprise
When I sing and I dance, the world is all right
‘Cause when the music’s playin’ then I’m on the next flight
To Melodyland
Where every day I’m just lovin’ the life that I lead
Melodyland
When I’ve got music then I’ve got the life that I need
Where each day is tuneful
And each night is lyrical
When you’ve got music
Well, that’s just a miracle
So, won’t you join me
C’mon, mister, strike up the band
And take me to Melodyland
That's really nice.
Any chance of your uploading it, so we can hear it?

You're tired!
For the last week or so, my dog has been waking us up once or twice in the middle of the night to let her out.
Then, at 6 am on the dot, our alarm clock [CORRECTION: our cat] starts yelling to be let out of the guest bathroom.
Is your dog ok?
-
I seemed to have reached a plateau last night, and as usual never noticed. ;D
To those of you who commented, thank you.
-
Beautiful lyrics, BK. I have a friend named Melody who will love it.
As others have asked, when do we get to hear the music that goes with it?
-
Job vibes to DR elmore & all who need them!!!!

A very happy to our north of the border DR Jennifer! Have a wonderful day!
Nice card & greeting for DR Jennifer. :)
I wonder what the nieces have in store for her.
-
I am back from an early morning ultrasound which divined that I am NOT pregnant.
I was worried you might be, thanks for the good news. ;)
When will you find out what it did divine? GOOD VIBES ALL IS WELL!!!
-
Happy Birthday, Jennifer! Please post a photo of the birthday cake tonight!
Cake first thing in the morning-I like that!!! :)

Too bad it is not Ask BK Day. Because I would ask BK why a truck marked with "IMS" has driven down my street twice in the last 20 minutes. It looks like it might have some kind of recording device.
Integrated Medical Services - ?
*I only know of that because my brother, Jay, has considered running in the IMS Marathon which is held in February.
I googled it and saw that. I'm glad I kept reading before posting.

I had actually ordered the CD from Footlight.com, but it's been more than a month and I haven't heard anything about it. I haven't received the CD and I also haven't been charged for it...but it's still listed on the website (http://www.footlight.com/product.cfm?product_id=2656). I suppose I should e-mail them asking how long it'll take.

LOL - I am trying to convince Shelly to add a drunk scene for the Mayor and Tommy....so far it's no go.
~~~Vibes for a Mayor and Tommy Drunk Scene!!~~~
Tonight we are doing Act One!
You know what to do.
Pray for Rosemary's Baby??
If any of you have his recording of FINE AND DANDY, have a listen and enjoy his sparkling witty work. Ignore mine, but the score is mostly Russell's.
One of my favorite recordings of recent years. "Let's Go Eat Worms in the Garden" is sublime.
DR GINNY - polka dots NEVER go out of style.
How does one upload a sound file? Where? I certainly wouldn't put a rough iPod recording on YouTube. The music is really cute, I think - many key changes within the verses - it just came flowing out like that. Starts in Ab for the first two lines, modulates to A for the next two, then to C for "Melodyland" and the next line, then to Eb for the next, and then back to Ab for the next verse.
-
And tonight GLEE is on for an extra 1/2 hour.
Not sure if I will get to watch it tonight. Apparently my aunt really want to watch the Canadiens playoff hockey game. I know i want to watch the DWTS results show. I felt so bad for Karina last night.
I have to record "Glee" tonight. Larry, my sister's boyfriend, is coming over to record some things that I have on my DVR so that he can make native-widescreen (but not hi-def) DVDs of them for me. He has to record them onto his laptop and then do stuff with programs that I don't have. I asked him if he could teach me how to do that on my computer and to let me know what new type of video card and program(s) that I would need. He said that he has a video card that he's not using and if I have room for it in my computer, I can just have it. :D
-
Then, the only things that I'll need to get would be whatever program to use and the cable.
Many vibes, Larry. I know all too well the grief you must be feeling.
Last night we watched INSIDE JOB and thought it was excellent. Keith was very familiar with many of the respected, in his opinion & apparently the people who did this, economists and over the years has given me many of their articles to read. If anything was missing it was comments on the history of economic downfalls and what might have been done in the beginning to turn this around.
I am reading THE WORST HARD TIMES: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan. I have been completely engrossed in the lives of these people who stayed.
I can't help but constantly compare what happened then to what has happened today. The government encouraged the people to "destroy" the land while ignoring the few who said you can't pull up the grass. Those who saved money during the good times lost it when the banks failed.
The banks failing is why regulations were instigated, yet the government thought it would be ok, and still does, to deregulate banks.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JENNIFER!!!!
My college boyfriend was from Keokuk
Today I was taking a shortcut through the library and heard the reference librarian on the telephone say
"Well, maybe Prince Philip is 5' 11 1/2" NOW, he is getting older" I don't know why but it really cracked me up.
I want this electric bike
Because it was a silly sentence, out of context I can only hope.
-
I'm assuming he meant that he was shrinking, not growing, but the librarian was quite animated in discussing it. Too funny
-
Thanks DR Jane.
-
Thanks DRs JMK and George.
-
Thanks to DR Mbarnum and Aunt Hetta.
I am so glad that DR Jane commented on this card. Because somehow my reader skipped it. I would have hated to have missed it.
-
Thanks DR Cillaliz!
Must go check out the 8pm DWTS. Supposedly there is some extra stuff on it. Lots of singer. or i may check out GLEE.
-
Sometimes I realize I have missed posts after another DR comments on something I haven't read.
-
DR George I hope the video card works.
Thanks, Jane! So do I!
-
Well, I'm off. I need to get home before Larry comes over.
Until later!
-
I'm watching DWTS. It's 2 hours tonight, you know.
-
DR's TCB & Cilla, did you see the latest news on the Titanic?
Titanic's unknown child is finally identified:
George, I have THE HUMAN COMEDY on CD if you'd like an "unofficial" gift, hint, hint, nudge, nudge say n'more.
-
In fact I have just about everything on CD. ;)
-
Including duplicate copies of titles I've forgotten I already have. :)
-
Today I got two more CDs to add to the pile--the iconic Swedish singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez. :)
-
DS Zach's middle school orchestra is performing tonight and for once I don't have a gig myself and can attend. Betsy is away in Eastern Oregon so this will be a nice father-son outing.
-
Enjoy the concert.
-
Hope we can soon see and hear "Melody" on YouTube!
AGREE!!
Page Three The Music Man rehearsal dance. ;D
This is Harold, our director, and Tommy whom some of you will recognize from NEVER TOO LATE except DR VIXMOM who hasn't watched the DVD yet. ;D
Tommy was the role I played. i always wanted to do Harold Hill.
-
G'night!
-
My sister and I spent the evening watching the Richard Gere version of SHALL WE DANCE and the "Behind the Scenes" feature. She owns it, but I'd never seen it. I enjoyed it very much.
-
I will probably be E & T until tomorrow evening. Nancy and I are going to Lansing tomorrow to have lunch with Mary Linda and her Mom and to do some genealogy work. We're leaving about 9:30 in the morning and probably won't be back until dinnertime.
'night!
I was in the Quartet in high school. I was either Olin Britt or Oliver Hix - I can't seem to remember right now. However, I do remember singing the the baritone/lead in some songs and then the second tenor in others. Ah, the joys(?) of adolescent male voices. ;)
-
Oh...
And I always wanted to do Harold Hill too.
Oh...
Earlier today, I attended the 25th Annual Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Easter Bonnet Competition.
For some of the details, Click Here (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/150242-Wicked-Tour-Boosts-2011-Easter-Bonnet-to-Near-Record-37-Million-La-Cage-and-Bengal-Tiger-Are-Winners)
Personally, this event, as well as the corresponding event in the Fall, never fails to move me to tears a few times. Today was no exception. There were some wonderful tributes and remembrances. But there are also a lot of laughs. And, again, today was no exception. Seeing "Little Sally" (from Urinetown) holding a teddy bear clad in a Spider-Man costume, well... ;D
And this year's final fundraising tally: $3,706,085 (!!!!!!!!!)
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR JENNIFER ;D
-
Just in case...
The teddy bear was in a Spider-Man costume, not "Little Sally" (Jen Cody).
-
Great song bk.
I'm trying to see the May show, keeping my fingers crossed.
:)
-
I loved Phoebe Snow. Saw her at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara. Listened to her albums till they would not play anymore.
:'(
-
And now...
I need to get my bag ready for my trip down to DC tomorrow morning. I have to do some prep work at Arena Stage tomorrow afternoon, and then play a brief set of auditions for Oklahoma! tomorrow night. -We have to fill two slots - singer/dancers. -And then I'll be heading back up to NYC on Friday.
Goodnight.
-
Wow, a time before cd's.
-
Goodnight everyone.
Sweet dreams.
Vibes for tomorrow.
;D
I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Japanese version is even better.
Had our very long rehearsal, which was the usual rough first time through everything - a LOT of music for the MD and despite having listened to it and despite our having worked together this week, he still forgot a lot of what we'd done.
-
Then the twelve-year-old (last day for THAT) and her folks and I went for some chow at Paty's coffee shop - I had a turkey salad sandwich.
