Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very May-like, and now it is time for you to post until the lusty month of May cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: EFFLORESCE!
-
For the many errant and truant, I'm just posting again that the new book is up for pre-order at http://kritzerland.com/masquers.htm. Signed copies, of course. For those who'd prefer the less expensive paperback version, it's available now at amazon and barnesandnoble.com (a really good price there, as is the hardcover version, I have to say) - they'll ship immediately from there. I'll have books in two weeks.
-
I've certainly been one of the errant and truant. I will have more than two whole days to ketchup on after today's matinee and strike. I'm glad I checked in, because I have just purchased the new Adriana Hofstetter book!
-
Cannibal! The Musical! has been going quite well, especially this last weekend. Last night (Saturday night), we not only had a full house, but I'd heard that they added five additional chairs! AND with Friday's show, we broke even so that Saturday and Sunday's shows are all profit!
-
Today, we have our last performance, then we strike the set and it'll all be done. :)
-
And on that note (C-natural), I'm off to bed.
I really can't wait to have time for myself to read what's been happening during the last few days on HHW. :D
-
But before I go...A Very Happy Birthday to DR The Vixter!! ;D
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
It's morning here in midtown, too.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Great news, George, on the success of the show.
-
I won't be around on May 10th. I'm going to DC that weekend to see Follies and I'm taking a couple of extra days beyond that so I won't be here to see BK or the show.
-
I love may being so lusty

Good morning, all! I watched five episodes of DOWNTON ABBEY last night and I didn't get to bed till after 1 am. Last night's peculiar dream took place in Oxford, OH, on the Miami Uiversity campus, but I recall little of the events. I do remember that the health center, a friend with a cold, the Miami University King Library, and Mary Rodgers Guettel were all in it.
Today, I am home working on Appalachian holidays and hardships. I may step out to the market but I'm going nowhere else. I've go some writing to accomplish. I will have a bit of work before we begin rehearsals on May 23.
BK, May 10 has been added to my calendar but I can make no promises yet about being there.
-
Oh my, I forgot today was May. Ricky played "bite mom's toes while she's sleeping" at 6:40 this morning. I looked at the clock and thought it said 8:40 so i got up. It wasn't until I was in the kitchen and noticed that the clock said 7:15 that I realized that happened.
-
I really want to go for a bike ride, but it's only 38 degrees, so I think I'll wait
-
It is a gloriously sunny day here in the Pacific NW--finally! For the second time since we've lived here, a friggin' crazy woodpecker has gone after the metal chimney that exits the wood surround, waking Betsy and me to the lovely sound of what appears to be us being mortared and shelled by incoming shrapnel.

My gorgeous goddaughter Charlotte is now a graduate of University of Michigan. Ron flew up Friday from DC to catch one day's worth of the festivities.

Greetings from New York! I had planned on coming here this weekend but wasn't really sure until Friday. For one thing, I didn't have a hotel until Friday night. I had no luck with priceline.com and settled on The Milford Plaza. I like the location since it's right in the theater district and is near the Port Authority, where I get the bus to JFK.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And, yes... It's May!
-
New York visit vibes for DR KEVIN H.
Congrats to the goddaughter of DR ELMORE!
Congrats to DR GEORGE on the success of his show....closing day vibes as well.
-
It is raining here again today - and we have our May Bored....I mean....Board Meeting this afternoon.
And of course TAR is on tonight....although with my favorite team gone.....I shall have to find someone else to root for.
-
DR KevinH - Welcome back to NYC!
-Can you tell if they did any actual work on the Milford Plaza? I know they had closed it down with the intention of doing a major(!) renovation, but then those plans fell through and they quietly re-opened.
-
I can't believe my luck in getting a cheap ($30) ticket to How to Succeed... yesterday. I had checked out the various lotteries and "rush" policies before I got here. I got to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre at about 1 pm and asked the ticket seller if he had any rush seats by any chance. He said he had one left so I grabbed it. It was a box seat, so the ticket was stamped "partial view," but it was really a great seat for the most part. The woman in front of me blocked my view a little but for most of the show I could see very well.
I was very impressed with Daniel Radcliffe (and particularly Tammy Blanchard, who plays Hedy LaRue). The whole cast was great. And I don't recall ever hearing such deafening applause at the end of a show (well, the audience was very vocal throughout).
While not the greatest singer, Daniel really pulls it off. And I thought his dancing was terrific.
I'm going to meet my friends from California here in October so most likely I'll see the show again then.
-
Oh... I guess Brent Barrett is back in Chicago.... ;)

Hi DR Jose! I had read that they're still doing renovations, but I haven't really seen a sign of it. I have a very basic room, but it's clean!
-
I Forget...Does One Evaporate When They Reach Eighteen?????
-
Oh... I guess Brent Barrett is back in Chicago.... ;)
Oh, let me check! You're right! I had gotten a ticket to see Christie Brinkley in the show, but it'll be nice to see Brent as Billy Flynn again! :)
-
In other news...
After I took a walk around the block(s) yesterday afternoon, I came back here, watched some TV... And then somewhere along the line fell asleep on the couch in the living room. Again. -At least it's a comfortable couch.
-
I also went to see a new show called "Lucky Guy," a spoof on country music, with Varla Jean Merman and Leslie Jordan. It was very funny, (sample from one of the songs "Jeannie Jeannine" sings: "there's always a hitch in a trailer park romance.") And an actor I wasn't familiar with, Kyle Dean Massey, was really great as Billy Ray. I think the show is a little long, but overall I had a good time.
-
I'm going to see the last performance of "The Divine Sister" at 3 pm. It's a spoof of some of the "nun" movies like The Singing Nun. Maybe some of you New Yorkers would like to join me!
-
It's a beautiful May morning.
-
MAY DAY! MAY DAY!
Happy First Anniversary To My Son Craig and His Beautiful Wife Heather.

DR KevinH, I would love to, except for the fact that I am going to be working until my appalachian Christmas meeting on Tuesday. Enjoy!
Thanks for the "Lucky Guy" tip. I'd like to see it.

Kyle was in Altar Boyz for a while, and he took over for Aaron Tveit in Next to Normal. Good guy.
And I believe he's playing opposite Savannah Wise in Lucky Guy. And Savannah happens to be Scott Wise's daughter.

bk - How long will you be in NYC for The Singer's appearance at The Metropolitan Room? Alas, I can't make it on the 10th, but I may be able to meet up with you on the 9th depending what time I get back from DC. -I'll also be heading down for Follies next weekend, as well as for Mother's Day.
-
And now...
I really should start getting ready to head back onto the streets of New York City myself. Alas, I'll be heading down to a practice studio, but still...
Laters...

You need to have the wood inspected for bugs. That's what woodpeckers are drawn to, they don't just peck wood for fun ;) Perhaps there are bugs coming up the metal from your wood surround...or something. Anyway, I'd have someone look at that before the woodpeckers do a lot of damage
-
From DR TCB:
I apologize. Yes, I had seen an article earlier on the DNA testing. Still it is strange that the crew of the Mackay-Bennett were so moved by the body of one little boy, but at the same time bagged and dumped a large number of unidentifiable passengers back into the sea.
Not knowing of the number of passengers returned to the sea I wondered that there must be other unidentified people. I guess the infant captured hearts & represented all those lost.
-
From DR Jrand:
Yes DR JANE - I am a Titanic fanatic.
Then I apologize for not including you in my comments to Cilla & TCB. I was pretty sure I was missing another Titanic fan but alas my brain couldn't tell me who it was.

No problem DR JANE. I talk about so many interests and projects here on HHW that I can barely keep up with myself.
The only "film" I have ever been disappointed in is the Playhouse 90 live television version of "Titanic", but given it's limitations, it is still quite interesting.
-
Sounds like DR KEVIN H is taking NYC by storm.
Thanks for the musicals report!
-
Is there any sadder message than: "No New Messages"?

I've been writing my fingers to the bone.
I have discovered that two different versions of "I Wish I Was Single Again,"one for men and one for women, can be put into counterpoint, and I've copied out and harmonized "People, Look East" and "How Far Is It To Bethlehem." I think it is time for some lunch!

As Chairperson of the 50th Anniversary Committee for Putnam County Playhouse - we have finally been accepted to have our own Plaque on the Preservation Wall in Greencastle - our home, and the county seat (and also home to DePauw University).
-
Here is the proof of our very own plaque that will be dedicated on Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m. on the lawn of the Masonic Lodge! ;D
I am among the group on the bottom right at the 2007 groundbreaking for our Rehearsal Center. ;D
-
I'm up after a very good night's sleep.
-
Well, I hope some of you New Yahkers can join us on May 10 or at least at some point. Jose, I should be in the city on the 9th by five.
-
"Hey, New York, I'm headin' your way!"
I always think of that lyric when I plan a trip to NYC.....which has happened 3 whole times in my life.

It's on the calendar! And now the 9th is as well. When are you heading back to LA?
-
Well we on the committee think so, DR ELMORE.
I am sure there will be negative comments from those we asked for input, but who were too busy to answer phone calls or emails.
-
Page Three no picture Dance.
-
And I am off --- hopefully I not disrupt the meeting with any thoughts or ideas.

Time to go so I can get a seat to see "Meet Me at the Gables" There is only room for 60 people, so I want to go early. And since I will be taking up a seat in the restaurant....I guess I'll have to have one of their famous hot fudge sundaes....my diet doesn't officially start until after I return from the World Barbeque Championship in Memphis....can't be on a diet for that

Sunday afternoon greetings! We are back from Lima and I've decided to call the doctor's office tomorrow morning for an appointment about this throat thing/cough that I can't shake. It reminds me of the allergy-induced asthma that I had once in NYC after spending time in a Washington, DC, bookstore with their cats.
-
The film was ok. I bought a copy as a part of my Sioux City history collection, but since I didn't grow up here, many of the people they talk about were unknown to me. Of course I knew who the Friedman girls were - aka Abby Van Buren and Ann Landers - and there was a really funny story about a local newsman - I watched him on tv growing up, but other than that, it was well done just not that interesting to me
-
My gorgeous goddaughter Charlotte is now a graduate of University of Michigan. Ron flew up Friday from DC to catch one day's worth of the festivities.
Already???
Congratulations, to DR Elmore's gorgeous goddaughter Charlotte on her graduation from The University of Michigan - Go, Blue!
-
Throat vibes to DR Ginny

It's very windy today, but since I realized I put a part of the bike on backwards and fixed that this morning, I really had to take it for a spin. I'm getting more used to how the motor works and between the hills and the wind, I would have had some problems without it. I went a little farther today. If it wasn't so windy, I would have taken a longer ride. I forgot how much I enjoy riding a bike, and yes, I wear my helmet. I mean, after the wedding, hats are in, lol
-
Congrats to Charlotte!!

MAY DAY! MAY DAY!

Good Afternoon!
Well...
My friend, Yosh, came home earlier and wanted to make a trip to The London Candy Co. -Once I told him that they served Ovaltine, well... So we had Ovaltine and split an apple pastry. And that's basically all I've done over the past two hours. I am going to attempt to head out again and do a bit more... Or something. ::)
-
OK...
Here I go again...
Laters...
-
Congrats to DR Elmore's goddaughter charlotte!
-
Another extremely nice day here today. It was close to 70 and sunny. There were so many people at the park and lake. But i went for a 50-55 minute bike ride. It was so nice out.
-
I also watched my niece ride her bike this morning. They took her training wheels off last week. And today she was able to ride around the block herself. She was so proud!
-
DR Cillaliz re: the e-bike. I've seen a few demonstrated on tv. And I really thought that you could use the motor only and not drain the battery. I thought it had many miles before it would drain.
you can't drive 5 miles using the pedals nad then just motor it home?
-
Hello, everyone.
A lovely day here in LA.
-
Re: DOWNTON ABBEY:
I watched it a month or so ago when it first hit Netflix. I really enjoy these period dramas. I found the writing just s bit uneven, but overall really enjoyed it. I LOVED the new UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS and plan to purchase a copy. I think I'll go back and revisit DOWNTON ABBEY, too.

Belated birthday wishes to the all-grown-up VIXTER!!

Congrats to DGD Charlotte!

KevinH, sounds like fun in New York.
-
Congrats to Charlotte.

Went to see "Memphis" at the movie theater. There were maybe 20 in the audience. I thought the two leads were wonderful and most of the cast did the best they could with lower second rate material.
So many different items borrowed from better shows. In the danceoff, I swore I heard parts of West Side Story's Mambo. And when someone takes his pants off on live TV, I could hear Lorrell in "Dreamgirls" say, "It don't take a wiz to know that only a desperate man would drop his pants in show biz."
Still, I would rather pay $20 for the film than $120 for a live performance to learn that.

Well, I did not get to see this production of CANNIBAL THE MUSICAL. I missed the previous version due to snow back in 2008. This time it was my back. It has been getting worse and worse all last week, so that I was missing a lot of hours of work. By Friday afternoon, I knew that my weekend was going to be very limited.. I cancelled going to the opening night of my (and Jason Graae's) close and personal friend, Sharry in ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE. She is not playing the title character, but the other character in the two-character musical
Saturday I had lunch with an old friend that I hadn't seen in 32 years. Other than that it has been a Valley of the Dolls weekend.
-
Back to LA on the 12th.
-
Back from delivering CDs, some breakfast, and I've just finished writing the liner notes for our next release. I'll go do a jog in a little while and then I'm sitting on my couch like so much fish!
-
I'm back from The Divine Sister. It was really hilarious. Charles Busch and Julie Halston were so much fun to watch. Any of our New Yorkers know Jennifer van Dyck? She was great ! I didn't get some of the references, but I figured some were from Doubt and Agnes of God (especially since one of the characters is named Agnes--I thought that was a great clue...).
Charles Busch gave a little speech after the show saying what a great run it's been (9 months) and talked about a few audience members from other nights, such as the woman in the front row, upon seeing Julie Halston come back for another scene, said "not her again."
-
Sorry the timing couldn't have been better and I could have been here for the haineshisway get-together! Bruce, please try and come on a weekend next time!

I'm from Kentucky. I can make all in the family appalachian jokes.

Does anyone (Again I guess, Ginny, plus John G.) have any ideas for cleaning the grout between bathroom tiles. With my back problems and the arthritis in my hands, I have no power to scrub any longer. I need something strong.

I never liked the taste but I don't recall it was lumpy. My mother drank it & I often mixed it for her. I tried it again years later when Bryan came home asking for it & said it was better for me than chocolate.

Keep the windows open. In the shower for the small area I need it (we put in a fake marble, not exceptionally beautiful but extremely easy to clean) I use a small scrub brush. I don't need to scrub too hard with it.
We need to clean the grout between the tile on the floor. I read Borax is good but I expect scrubbing will be required. I'm curious what responses you get to this question.

Good Evening!
Well... I headed back out. Took the 6 Train down to Spring St, then walked through the eastern part of SoHo.
-
Then I continued walking east through the northern edge of Little Italy into Chinatown. I stopped into Prosperity Dumpling for some Pork & Chive Dumplings - 5 for a $1! - as well as a Sesame Pancake - also just a $1! Then I noticed a small Chinese bakery I hadn't seen before: an Almond Cookie and a Lao Bo Ping ("Wife Cake") - both for a whopping 60-cents!

I never thought I'd hear someone say they were going out for Ovaltine! I can understand it, but never expected to hear that.
;D I do not like Ovaltine.
Was anyone ever able to get Ovaltine to dissolve in the milk?
I never liked the taste but I don't recall it was lumpy. My mother drank it & I often mixed it for her. I tried it again years later when Bryan came home asking for it & said it was better for me than chocolate.
It wasn't that it was lumpy. It was just when you got to the bottom of the glass / cup, half the granules were still sitting there.
-
Is the Ovaltine that medley they play before a musical about chocolate?
-
Then I decided to check out some of the side streets in Chinatown I hadn't checked out before. Then I looped back up to the Lower East Side via Henry Street. Once I got back up to Stanton Street, I stopped into Souvlaki GR to say "Hi!" to the owners. I didn't stay for any souvlaki or bifteki, but the owner gave me some Greek chocolate bars for the road. :)

Does anyone (Again I guess, Ginny, plus John G.) have any ideas for cleaning the grout between bathroom tiles. With my back problems and the arthritis in my hands, I have no power to scrub any longer. I need something strong.

Thanks for the idea, Jane.

DR Jose how does Greek chocolate compare to good Swiss chocolate or our chocolate?

I couldn't quote Jose's post about the chocolate & then it took two attempts to post my comment.

DR TCB let me know if you try Zap & if so if it works.

Found some interesting CDs today in the markdown bin. Sylvia Syms' tribute to Johnny Mercer, Portia Nelson and a real oddity, a musical version of "The Scarlet Letter." ("Gimme an A ...")

DR Jane - The interesting thing about a lot of the Almond Cookies at the Chinese bakeries here in NYC - and elsewhere - is that they are topped with Walnuts - ??? They're basically like large shortbread cookies with ground almonds mixed into the dough... And then topped with walnuts. ;)
The Wife Cake was filled with winter melon and sesame seeds.
-
I had a couple of errands to do in town today. Since it was such a nice day we took Sherlock and walked around. We had expected difficulty finding parking and lots of foot traffic as the yearly TASTE OF ASHLAND was going on. To our amazement we didn't find either. It is a two day event so I hope yesterday was packed.
-
DR Jose how does Greek chocolate compare to good Swiss chocolate or our chocolate?
Well...
The Chocolate-Hazelnut Wafer bar lasted about a block. ;)
And the bar of Milk Chocolate is quite good too. I'm rationing that one out. :)

I'm not sure I would like the "almond" cookies. Do the restaurants serve traditional ones? I am curious to taste a small piece of Wife Cake if the opportunity arises.

You know I would have to give away, or not accept, the hazelnut bar. The chocolate is pretty traditional then?
-
DR Cillaliz re: the e-bike. I've seen a few demonstrated on tv. And I really thought that you could use the motor only and not drain the battery. I thought it had many miles before it would drain.
you can't drive 5 miles using the pedals nad then just motor it home?
I suppose you could. I'm catching on a bit better now. If you break it stops the motor and you have to start it again. When you go downhill you don't need it. It was better today, but the wind was way too strong to be out there. It has been stopping on me just as i almost get to the top of the hill, I think I'm doing something wrong. I'll figure it out

I'd start of by wiping, scrubbing off what you can. Then...
If you have an extra spray bottle, just fill it with a diluted bleach solution. Give the grout a few spritzes after you shower - or a couple of minutes before you shower. Do that daily. The bleach solution should eventually whiten things up.

The chocolate it pretty traditional. They're just made in Greece.
They have a Greek newsstand set up in the front of their restaurant. Magazines, newspapers, candies, chocolate bars, and packaged croissants(?!?). Even though the products are real, they are just there for display. None of it for sale - at least legally. So... From time to time, Pavlos and Abby give away some of the items. :)

I think you would like the Wife Cake, DR Jane. It's basically a pastry filled with a not-so-sweet filling. Think of it as a smoother and lighter version of prune or apricot filling.

It always dissolves better in warm/hot milk than cold. However, I always liked the "sludge" at the bottom of the cup. :)

I see that actor William Campbell has died.
He was a very nice guy. In his later years, he was the chief fundraiser for the Motion Picture Home.
-
I watched THE GREEN HORNET (2011) this afternoon.
This is the kind of movie that makes me angry.
It had a very funny concept (i.e. spoofing the classic superhero) that worked at first, then it just ran out of steam and disintegrated into a stupid CGI action movie.
:-\

did this work?

finally!

every time I tried to post I would get "you have already submitted this post" and then it would throw me out
how unseemly!

It has been a very busy weekend
-
On Friday I drove the Vixter to the DMV where she registered to vote and passed her drivers' permit test
-
Then we went out to the Outback for a lovely birthday dinner with Vixdad, vixnana & vixpapa, vixuncle and his wife
we didn't get home until half past eleven and so all went off to bed
-
Saturday day was spent shopping for the foodstuffs for the Vixters' friends birthday party
-
We arrived at the church at 4 to set up (we rented the church hall) and discovered that the previous group was still there and hadn't even begun cleaning up yet - in fact they were just finishing eating their meal so our preparations were very rushed as the guests arrived at 6 somehow we managed to be ready though
-
the party ended at 11 but by time all the guests left and we had cleaned up and set the the hall up for this morning's event it was after midnight
-
This morning we had to be at church by 8:30 to teach Sunday school and attend church.

Actually, Jose, that was my brainstorm this afternoon. But I wanted it to work instantly.

The elderly lady that we drive home every week insisted on taking us to lunch to celebrate the Vixter's birthday so we did not get home until 2:30 - then the Vixter, Vixdad and I went out in the Vixdadmobile for the Vixter's first ever driving lesson
-
Then we came home and she went directly to church Youth Group where they played a soccer game, ping pong and musical chairs
when she got home she was exhausted and went immediately to bed - she promises to pop in tomorrow
-

you need to be in one of those 30 minute television commercial presentations for it to work instantly!

I've been reading Oxygen bleach is nontoxic & better to use. The longer you let it sit on the grout the less scrubbing that is needed.

Well, I have to see Baby, It's You, don't I? :) The day of the 11th I think there will be some work, too. I'm hoping that there will be time for some kind of get-together because I dearly miss our New Yorkers.
-
House Hunters has a real estate agent named Donna Reed who is showing her clients stone homes. Those of a certain age will appreciate the irony.
