Good morning, all! I have a big meeting at 2 pm about this Appalachian Christmas piece, and getting what I have in order will take most of my morning. I'd like to be out of here by noon, so if I have any recopying or rewriting I can do it at Toyland before the meeting.

DR George, I wsh you'd posted more photos from the show.

DR Jose, your post about the events of the day, which I would guess pertain to the City's reaction to binLaden's death, sounds portentous. I was surprised to find the news channel I watch had at both 6 and 11 pm "special editions" which I found rather ridiculous. OK. He's dead. I'm happy to hear it. There will be repercussion of some sort. It could be ugly. Is this unexpected news?

I have no more news for now.

As for the "obvious" snubs:

No nomination for Aaron Tveit nor Daniel Radcliffe as Leading Actor in a Musical.

No nom for Born Yesterday in the Best Revival of a Play.

Priscilla not nominated for Best Musical. -Although, I really do question some of the People - capitalization on purpose - who thought that it would and should get one.

Oh... And...

I am confused (nothing new).  On Sunday night, several news organizations said bin Laden had been killed LAST week and it was just now being reported.  They spoke about Obama's "poker face" through all his public events.  Now the news is saying bin Laden was killed Sunday night our time.  What gives?

I believe the whole "last week" confusion resulted from some reporters trying to figure out the time difference between the US and Pakistan, as well as some news agencies trying to get the jump on the other news agencies. -Some people thought it happened on Saturday night/early Sunday morning in Pakistan, thus the whole "last week" time frame.

Frankly, I was surprised "Catch Me ..." got a nod for best musical. The Tony nominators usually pick something bizarre, like "Women on the Verge ..." or "Bloody, Bloody ..." that has already closed to send a message to the underachiever. "Catch Me ..." not getting nominated for book or score is another way of doing that, I guess.

DR elmore - Yeah, some of the local coverage is a bit overblown and drawn out. I did appreciate some of the interviews with some of the people gathered down at Ground Zero and Times Square, but I got sick of the reporters trying to prompt some very emotional responses with their questions. -Or, worse, reacting to the answers given as if they had just witnessed someone crumble to the ground and crawl into the fetal position.

...And then when they spoke to actual "survivors", friends and families, well... That will always get to me.

Chef Michael Lomonaco was on "The View" yesterday, and hearing his story of that day again... He had stopped into the optometrist on the concourse level of the World Trade Center that morning to get his reading glasses adjusted when the first plane went into the tower... Meanwhile, his restaurant, Windows On the World, was filled with diners enjoying their breakfast and 79 staff members...

Like DR MBarnum, I am also cheering for Zev and Justin. Honestly I can't remember who the first place team is (is it the Globetrotters?).  To me Zev and Justin are the only competent team left. The others were not very good in their seasons. And I hate have just okay racers win.  I think Mallory seems very nice. But her dad seems to carry that team. I don't find the globetrotters or sisters to be very good. But i don't dislike either team.  I was so happy to see those whiners go. Could not stand them. But I was not that happy that the leg was decided by 2 fairly simple tasks. Zev and Justin got very lucky.

TOD: I have several of Mamet's plays in print, but haven't gotten around to reading them.

But I love many of his movies:

Things Change
Homicide
Spanish Prisoner
Winslow Boy
House of Cards

But I am not a fan of Mrs. Mamet II, Rebecca Pigeon. She always seems to me to be an enormous black hole, sucking life out of anything she's in, including "RED." I once saw an album of hers and should have bought it (it was only $1). Anybody heard it?

And there's the missing Robin Williams, too.

I think that's mainly due to the fact that the part he plays is basically "Robin Williams". Additionally, yes, he has title billing, but the character he plays is definitely not a "Lead", imho. His "partner", Arian Moayed, did get nommed in the Featured Role category.

Judging solely from the cast recording, it wasn't a very good show. And all the insight the critics found? Well, it comes off as being rather superficial and cliched.

Ditto for his first wife,  Lindsay Crouse, word for word.  I bet it was she who inspired his whole "Actors should just stand there and recite my script" school of acting.

But the funny thing about actors and Mamet is that they'll line up to do just that.  And they certainly would not do it for any other writer and director even if they were better than that.

I woke up at 5:30 this morning when Ricky came racing across my room, pounced on me and chased the lights from a car that were going across the wall...he went onto the bookcase and knocked a lamp over.   Needless to say it woke me up, but it was really pretty funny.   Then I started thinking...what if he was really chaing a bat?   So, I've been up since 5:30...no bat, whew!

I am SOOO excited to see Elton John tonight.   I remember first hearing his music wafting from my brother's room...he was a fanatic when he was in high school.  I remember pizza at Jake's when I was in jr. high with his music blaring on the juke box...and his songs have been around ever since.   For me, he's one of the artists in the soundtrack of my life. His concert is a greatest hits concert.  No opening act, 3 hours, no intermission....should be fun!

I came home to find a paypal "dispute" - one of our lovely customers said he always receives our CDs three days after he orders them.  Now, that is, of course, not possible, since he always preorders when I do the castrecl pre-announcement.  But he opens this dispute and says he hasn't received his item, which is - wait for it - CAMELOT, which, clearly stated on the Kritzerland site and in our announcements, doesn't ship officially until the second week of June.  We'll probably have them by the end of next week, a month early.  He also sent me an e-mail, so I responded in both places saying it was most unseemly to open a dispute when a) there has never been a problem before, b) before I even have a chance to respond to his e-mail, and c) when the item isn't supposed to ship for over a month.  I told him that if he didn't remove the dispute immediately, I would cancel his order and he could purchase it and any other CDs that he might want in the future elsewhere.

Maybe he was thinking of another CD that he should've gotten and just wasn't paying attention.

Still, it's a stupid excuse to open a dispute without giving the seller a chance to respond.

Speaking of reading, I signed up for a course in Culture of the Jazz Age. Readings by Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes and more, plus a section on the blues. Sounded great. Got the reading list today. It's all the stuff we had to read in high school ("The Sun Also Rises," which I loathe, as well as "Great Gatsby" and "Their Eyes Were Watching God," which I love, though I've read them both multiple times). Then there was the unannounced "Sound and the Fury," which we apparently have only one week to read. I don't remember it being "Jazz Age."

But I think I need to get started asap.

In other news...

The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck (http://www.biggayicecreamtruck.com/) got off to a rousing start today. I got down there around 1:00, and Doug had just pulled into his spot. So, I helped put up the signs and get the truck ready for it's Official First Day of the Season. As soon as he opened the window, there were already six people in line - including a couple who were about to head to JFK to fly back to Seattle, but wanted to stop by the truck for some pre-flight soft-serve goodness. And the line just got longer and longer as the afternoon went on.

I cut out for a bit to head over to Chelsea Market, but when I got back around 4:30, the line was about 30 people deep. He had planned to stay open until 7:00, but he ended up closing a bit earlier since he was running out of cones and cups! Welcome back, Doug!

While I was at Chelsea Market, I checked out the James Beard Foundation "Pop-Up", JBF LTD (http://). They've set up a cafe of sorts in one of the empty storefronts. There's lots of tables, a coffee stand, a food stands, free WiFi, plus areas for cooking demos and presentations. You can either get a bite to eat, or just sit down for a bit and check your email.

Gail Simmons ("Top Chef", "Top Chef Desserts") and Mitchell Davis from the Beard Foundation, talked for about 45 minutes, and then took questions from the crowd. It was a fun Q&A. The focus was on the effect of TV and social media on the world of cooking, but she did talk quite about her different roles on "Top Chef" as a judge and on "Top Chef: Desserts" as a judge.

As to the Tony noms, the other shut out would have been Baby, It's You if this season had any other musical with a decent starring role in a musical (other than the three who were nominated) - Beth, who is wonderful, was assured that nomination no matter what.

And since there were less than 7 possible nominees this season, that's why there is only 4 nominees instead of 5 in the Leading Actress in a Musical category.

OK...

I need to get ready to head out. The Big Gay Ice Cream hits the streets again today, and there's a social media panel being led by Gail Simmons at the James Beard Pop-Up in Chelsea Market.  In other words... Free Food! ;)

Laters...

Free food -- two of the most glorious words in the English language.

Or was that supposed to have been "musical comedy'?

And I'll be enjoying more free food tomorrow at the LuckyRice Night Market (http://www.luckyrice.com/night-market/) as a guest of The Big Gay Ice Cream Truck.

I'm thinking that DR MBarnum would like this event.

I have a tummy ache so I'm going to go read for awhile & finish the latest Maisie Dobbs book I'm reading.

What a coinkydink!  Literally just a few minutes ago, I ordered three copies of the talking book for the library! ;D

And just because this made me laugh....

A 360-Degree Annotated Slide Show of Donald Trump’s Head (http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2011/05/donald-trump-hair-photos-201105)

;D ;D ;D

Why can I only find one photo from the front?  I have never seen the back of his head-lol.  The man would have to be brilliant to be elected president with that hair!

Did you click through the slide-show? There a are a couple from the front.

The slide show was with a bunch of other people so I stopped sliding.

Here's the BACK (http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2011/05/donald-trump-hair-photos-201105?currentPage=10) of his head.

Thanks.  It doesn't appear he is doing a pull over to the front.  I wonder what he is doing then.  I know this is silly to be so curious but how can someone with his money not have a better haircut or hairpiece‽

DR Jane - Apparently, it's a "Double Comb-Over" (http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2011/05/donald-trump-hair-photos-201105?currentPage=2). ;)

Hysterical!

It is a shame that Daniel Radcliffe was ignored by the Tonys, especially while two actors from THE BOOK OF MORMON were nominated.

OH!

DR elmore - The other day you posted:

"...in 1998 I was the subject of an article in OPERA NEWS about the restoration of the 1938 BOYS FROM SYRACUSE. There were complications on the project: one of the music staff at R&H, who never backed up his computer, lost the entire vocal score he had created under my direction, so Rodgers & Hammerstein cannot make the show available except on special occasions. The band parts are the originals, cleaned up and in some cases recopied by me, but there is no vocal score."

So...

Boys is listed on RnH.com for rental. It also lists a vocal score - and I just checked HalLeonard.com and there's a vocal score available for purchase. Were you saying that there's not a Revised Vocal Score available right now?

I did notice the band rental package only lists 14 books/players. Was this the original or the Roundabout Revival?

I am so happy that my friends Larry Blank and Larry Hochman have been nominated for Tony Awards for best orchestrations. I hope one of them gets the award. They've both deserved it for some time.

Evidently being named Larry determines your career path.  :)

At least two of the three Larrys have careers going well!

But only one is so loved by so many!

Windows on the World was one of my favorite spots in NYC.

What, no nomination for Boyd Gaines?
Or was I supposed to respond this way, DR JohnG?
"Nor Audra McDonald."
;D
Don't they both have it written in their contracts that they will automatically get nominated?

I will admit the two times I've seen Gaines ("She Loves Me" and "Gypsy") that he was excellent in both.

Oh yes, I loved Boyd's ROSE'S TURN.

Kind of like Mozart and Spike Jones are for elmore.

Had a mostly great rehearsal - the show order works wonderfully and the cast is to die for - many showstopping moments.  Alet's You Can Be A New Yorker, Too is hilarious, as is Dan's I Lost The Rhythm, and Melody, Jenna, and Paige killed with the Annie numbers.  Our MD mucked up a few things but we cleared all of them up afterwards.  Looking at his pencil scriblings in his music, it's totally understandable - I asked him to clean all that stuff up so he can actually read it.

I was told earlier that we only had fifteen bodies coming tomorrow night.  That made no sense to me as I could account for thirteen of those bodies and I knew others had made reservations - as per usual no one has gotten confirmations and the mother of one of the little girls told me she's made a reservation for eight, so that would bring us up to twenty-three at least.  And there are probably a few more than that, and I told the cast to do what they could to fill the room.

And I expect a full report tomorrow, young lady!

The concert was fabulous.  He sang and played for 3 full hours without an intermission.  It was mostly his hits, but a few from the new album with Leon Russell.   The music was fabulous and his voice was strong throughout.   What I think made it a truly wonderful experience is that he seems so genuinely happy. He said he was enjoying performing now more than ever in the past and you could tell.   He expressed how appreciative he was for the people who have been loyal fans for so many years and said it took 41 years to get here, but he'd make up for it, and boy did he.

I'll have to wait and see the actual playlist for Sioux city, but it seemed to be the same as other stops on the tour.  26 songs!  Some great solos.   His piano playing was out of this world
