Title: THE STUMBLE-THROUGH

Well, you've read the notes, the notes stumbled-through, and now it is time for you to post until the stumbling cows come home.

Good morning, all! I've been movng about since 5:45. I have to be out of here no later than 7:45 to make my 8:30 appointment at the NYU Dental Clinic, and even then that may be too late, since getting around Manhattan is ridiculous with the MTA cutbacks on buses and trains. There's no reason this trip should take between 45 minutes to an hour, but most of the time is waiting for a vehicle to show up.

My day after I leave there depends mainly on how I feel after the dental work, which I believe will be a redo of an old filling. I do have two numbers from EILEEN, an operetta by Mr Victor Herbert, to proofread, and I have laundry.

That's my day. It's time for more coffee!

Question for BK...or anybody else who knows the answer:

Where can you buy individual sheet music for older OOP songs?

Preferably in a pdf format.

It seems that, in my move to Austin, I've misplaced all of the sheet music needed for my 1-person Maurice Chevalier play.

I'm going over to my storage place in a little while to see if they're buried somewhere in there, but failing that...I've got to get new copies.

Some of the stuff will be easy to replace.  In fact, I probably have them in some books that I know are in the storage space.  But, several of the tunes, particularly the ones from the early Paramount movies (e.g. "What Would You Do?) are going to be difficult.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

DR Jane - I've been down the basement walking with Sir Elton.  After slacking off for a couple of weeks, it took a lot of effort to do my 30 minutes, but I made it.  My weight-loss numbers vary, depending on which scale I use and the time of day, but I can safely say I've lost almost 30 pounds.  I'm kind of stuck right now, but at least I didn't gain any during my travels.  Thanks for noticing!

Perhaps DR Druxy, a PR pro, can explain why in heaven's name a tiny niche label's press contact would refuse to answer emails over the course of two months and also decide to stop providing review product for the site that is giving said niche label its widest audience and which can also provide sales data showing tens of thousands of units of said niche label's product sold.  Oy.

I'm having a blast with my handy dandy new smartphone, though like any typical geezer (technical term), I had to call Verizon last night to find out why a bunch of icons were suddenly appearing on my "home screen."  It turns out if you press an icon for too long it migrates to your home screen.  You can get rid of them by holding them down on your home screen and dragging them to the trash icon.  Who knew?  (Probably Jose).  ;)

Dame John has to look good. It's a Big Ego.

Yes, I am back from the Dental Clinic and I ache from jaw to jaw. The unpleasant surprise was that  I had to pay for all four fillings in full; it is not one of the procedures that will permit installment payments. I am now $380 overdrawn, but I think my invoice check will arrive before the clinic's check lands inmy bank.

Back from the urologist.  My 80-year-old doctor is back after having had a heart attack in November 2010.  He looks good if a bit "preserved".

Since I had some complaints, he "went in" with rubber gloves and Surgilube.  He was busy back there for what seemed a long time, but probably only 45-55 seconds.  He said the good news was that he felt no nodules.  The "other" news was that the prostate seems a bit inflamed to him.   So...antibiotics for a week or so and then more PSA tests in June and July.

Sigh.

1. I would have to know the name of the label in order to comment without speculating.  [Send me a private e-mail on that, if you prefer.]

2. Perhaps they've got a new person/company handling press for them, and he/she is making changes.  [After many years, Bender, Helper Impact no longer represents Fox.]

3.  Perhaps they're cutting expenses.  [Both Paramount and Universal cut their review lists 1-2 years ago.]

Well, if I die today, blame the vicodin. My mouth is killing me now the anesthesia has worn off so I thought I'd see what was in the medicine cabinet. I had two tablets of vicodin left so without reading the label, I took both of them. Then I got all pancky and called US Poison Control. The man asked me the dosage and told me I will get very drowsy. He didn't  start screaming for an ambulnce or anything so I guess I'll sweat it out.

And guess who's back for another extended visit:

Fleurie's first visit lasted only two weeks, but she's back for another month while her owners return their 17 year old son to his school in England.

(Her owners said she moped about the house for three days after we returned her from her last visit.)

She was all tail wagging when she arrived at the front door for this retuen to Summer Camp

Who knew?  (Probably Jose).  ;)

Probably ;D

The Rodgers & Hammerstein page on Facebook has a ton of photos of the OKLAHOMA! reconstruction at the North Carolina School of the Arts. I wanna see it!

That looks WONDERFUL!

I somewhat recall the Christine Andreas/Laurence Guittard revival going along that re-creation route, but I don't remember to what extent.
The photos look great, though John Mauceri is starting to look as old as Celete Holm.

Ouch twice!!!  MEGA VIBES THE CHECK ARRIVES IN TIME!

T the Farmer's Market I picked up a local endor's jar of " Backyard Country Apricot Mustard" - (mystard seed, brown sugar, cider vinegar, apricot jam, and herbs).  Sounds like it will make a great glaze for the wild Alaska Sockeye Salmon we bought.

Woody mixed some with olive oil and blasamic vinegar and made a splendid dressing for chilled greens.

Back from a fun sound check - I think we'll have a nice attendance tonight, at least I hope so after the alarming report of yesterday - and speaking of alarming report, I came home to an e-mail asking if I could confirm that former dear reader William E. Lurie had died in 2010.  Certainly he hasn't been to the site in ages - can someone search and see when his last post was?  I asked the guy to let me know if he's heard or hears anything concrete.  He did order Promises, Promises back in June of 2010 so he was certainly alive then.

I don't. I didn't like him. He came to THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X at NYMF with his partner and stayed aloof from the HHW folk who were there, as I recall. DR Ben pointed him out to me.

He was a thoroughly unpleasant man on the Cast Recording List, spreading negativity, misguidedly blaming organizations and people about matters in which he knew nothing, from the Cole Porter Trust's and Rodgers & Hammerstein's involvement in productions to other matters, and very often misinformed: his epic post was to bitch about the new movie NEW MOON; he had fears about the 1928 Sigmund Romberg operetta getting mangled in a remake: the movie he was complaining about was the vampire film based on the "Twilight"(?) series. He appeared clueless but emphatically right.

DR Jose, in my rush to get out this morning, I forgot to address your last round of BOYS FROM SYRACUSE questions. The published vocal score and the rental materials are based on the 1968(?) London production of the 1964 Off-Broadway revival. There were substantial changes made to the libretto and the music, and this versions been the one leased for the last 30 years.

I know that the R&H Theatre Library would like to finish the 1938 restoration and make it available. Right now it's only rentable in special circumstances. I think they've got an uncorrected photocopy of the lost piano-conductor score that was made for Encores! They'd have to copy a new score from scratch. Perhaps when they finish the restoration of TOO MANY GIRLS . . .

DR elmore I only meant I hoped he was alive to respond to your comment he could come yell at you.  I wasn't making a comment at all as to your personal dislike of him.  I did include a smiley face.

That's okay. I've gone through various "moods" about, and occasional battles with, various DRs, but I generally like everyone who posts here except for William Lurie. I was happy when he stopped posting. I never wished him dead, though, just somewhere else. And now he is.

Well, he had stopped posting.

How is your mouth feeling, any better?

The vicodin is working wonders.

You are lucky you can take vicodin.  I hope by tomorrow you won't need it.

The name sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it.

Who is/was William E. Lurie?

My sincere condolences to those of you who knew him.

You probably crossed paths in your early days of posting.  I remember him post for his devotion to his partner who was very ill.

Are you sure you're not confusing him with William F. Orr and his partner Joe who has terrible health problems? I don't recall any posts about a sickly partner from Lurie.

I was talking on the phone with my mother and scrolling through the posts (shh, don't tell her...).  It's always a shock when we learn of the death of a DR.  Being a reference librarian, I searched the Social Security Death Index and found that a William Lurie of Queens, NY, who was born in 1942 died on July 2, 2010.

I was looking over Mr Lurie's posts back to 2004, and I was surprised to fnd them much less negative than I remembered, and I was wrong.  I could find nothing about a sickly partner, though.

I guess a lot of my dislike for him stems from his cast recording list posts.

Now I can't get Melba Moore singing "Purlie" out of my mind...

...and she's LOUD!

LOL! (Laughing out LOUD!)

Here's Melba Moore in PURLIE:    Was she a precursor to American Idol, I wonder?  The encore is especially thrilling, though!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oFZV7fAbaE
I loved that video. "Purlie" seemed like it played forever in the early days of cable. Is the whole show available on DVD?

I think I prefer Ms. Moore's version before she found out she was a star.

If you OD, we will send Mikey to revive you.

Keith and I had been married 12 years & had two children before the age Bryan was when he got married.  I am not happy about this great delay in giving me grandchildren.  Bryan doesn't even want them.  Poor Craig wants children very much.

DR TCB - I copied my Kraft Theatre "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" - I tried a few times and there is a glitch at the end of the first section.....it may not play in your DVD player....or you may have to skip over a few minutes to see the rest....BUT I will send you a copy if you don't mind the aggravation.

That would be terrific, Jack.  i would be very pleased to get it in any shape.

That's him. I remember he lived in Queens.

Where does one find the Social Security Death Index? It sounds like a great place to play.

Most big city newspapers have a link to the Death Index.  I use it at work all the time.

Marian Mercer did pass away on April 27. Here is a notice from the Times

Marian Mercer, a willowy actress with a comedic flair who won a Tony Award in 1969 for her performance in the hit musical “Promises, Promises,” died on April 27 in Newbury Park, Calif. She was 75 and lived in Agoura Hills, Calif.

Leo Friedman

Marian Mercer with Jerry Orbach in "Promises, Promises," in 1969.

The cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease, her husband, Patrick Hogan, said.

Ms. Mercer, a 5-foot-9 blonde with green eyes and, when necessary, a sultry voice, won the Tony for best featured actress in a musical for her portrayal of Marge MacDougall, a pickup girl at Clancy’s Lounge.

“She’s giving one of the most delicious performances on Broadway, a B-girl who would rather die than have you think she’s cheap, as she deftly maneuvers herself into Jerry Orbach’s apartment, looking forward to bed,” The New York Times said.

But Ms. Mercer could handle more weighty characters. Among dozens of roles in repertory theaters around the country, she was Olivia in “Twelfth Night,” Helena in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and Blanche in “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

In the 1978 Broadway production of “Stop the World — I Want to Get Off ,” Ms. Mercer starred with Sammy Davis Jr., playing the four different women in his life with a mix of song, comedy and even mime.

Ms. Mercer’s zany streak led to frequent television appearances with the likes of Johnny Carson, Jonathan Winters and Dom DeLuise. She was seen on “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” “St. Elsewhere,” “Archie Bunker’s Place” and “The Golden Girls,” among many other shows. And on ABC from 1980 through 1982 (and later in syndication) she played the humorless hostess, Nancy Beebe, on “It’s a Living,” a sitcom that followed the lives of waitresses working in an expensive restaurant atop a hotel in Los Angeles.

Marian Ethel Mercer was born in Akron, Ohio, on Nov. 26, 1935, one of five children of Samuel and Nellie Mercer.

Besides her husband of 31 years, she is survived by her sister, Marjorie Keith, and a daughter, Deidre Whitaker. Her first marriage, to Martin Cassidy, an actor she met soon after coming to New York in 1957, ended in divorce.

She was 8 when she began singing lessons, a passion she pursued at the University of Michigan. There she also began acting, taking roles in summer stock theater. She moved to New York in 1957 and, after stints as a model, a hostess at Schrafft’s restaurant and a file clerk, was cast in the choruses of “Greenwillow” and “Fiorello!”

Her big break came in 1961 when she took over the title role in Rick Besoyan‘s Off Broadway hit “Little Mary Sunshine,” a spoof of old-fashioned operettas and musicals.

You would have enjoyed watching the scalper try to sell tickets outside the arena last night.   First a security guard walked up and told him he couldn't sell anything on city property without a permit (the whole block is city property)  he was arguing about just wanting to know the rules and where could he go....there really wasn't anywhere where people would be walking past.   As we reached the door I saw two police men moving in his direction.   Not sure who got the tickets, but I'm sure he didn't make much

If you OD, we will send Mikey to revive you.

He'd let me die and spend the visit trying to lure desperate men of Mediterranean aspect up to the fire escape.

I was looking for the like button!!

I forgot to mention, DR cillaliz, what a fantastic photo that was! I was going to download it for my "friends file" of photos, but I couldn't take it off the newspaper's page. When DR edisaurus - where is she these days? - was working on the birthday DVD for BK, I was happy I had a photo in my files of the late Richard Valley to send to her for inclusion.

Thanks, I think I may have gotten the photo let's see if this works

It did! It's in my file. Good photo.

I tried to copy it, but it said it couldn't find the file.

I do like this picture!

If you Google Image search "William E. Lurie," you get the most delightfully odd set of images ever, including several DRs.

WOW that is odd!

Watching "Funny Girl" for the first time in ages. I was never a fan of this movie and on my TV, Streisand's voice sounds disembodied. Yet, I'm enjoying more of it than I have before. And Anne Francis, with nothing to do, is charming.

So...

Here's my day in a nutshell:

-I walked in the rain.
-I ate steak.
-I ate soup.
-I ate cookies.
-I rode in an ice cream truck.
-I ate stinky tofu.
-I made 300 2 oz. portions of Ginger-Curry Milkshakes.

And now I'm, thankfully, off of my feet, and catching up.

So...

I went headed back to the James Beard Foundation "Pop-Up" in Chelsea Market, JBF LTD (http://popup.jamesbeard.org/), earlier today for a couple of events.

First up was a "Steak Tasting". They had four different types of beef to sample. It was quite informative. And delicious. It was cool getting to try different types of beef side-by-side. -And since there weren't that many people there, most of us in attendance ended up being able to have a nice portion. :)

Then April Bloomfield and her chefs de cuisine from The Breslin prepared a Spring Soup. Beans (three types, sunchokes, asparagus, ramps, spring garlic, broccoli raab, shallots, some salt and some olive oil. It was quite yummy! -And, again, since there weren't that many people in attendance, well... :)

And, then finally, Emily Luchetti, author of "Fearless Baking", gave a talk about common mistakes made by home bakers. At the end of her presentation, she brought out her "3:00 PM Chocolate Pick-Me-Up Cookies". About six dozen of them. And there were only about 20 people there, so... :) *I should have brought a small box or bag. But I did manage to have four of them. ::)

And then Doug came and picked me up in the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, and we headed to DUMBO for the Lucky Rice Night Market. It was a fun event. Lots of different types of Asian food, as well as lots of beer, sake and gin. -I was not in the mood to imbibe tonight. In any case...

I did try the stinky tofu. It wasn't bad. -Although, each time that particular kiosk would drop a new batch of stinky tofu into their deep-fryers, the most "amazing" smell would just start wafting through the air.

And, yes, I made and poured 300 2 oz. portions of Ginger-Curry Milkshakes for the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. They were a hit! -And once we hit 300, Doug, said I was done for the evening, so I got a good hour to walk around to taste some more food. :)
