Well, you've read the notes, the notes were short and sweet and also sweet and short, and now it is time for you to post until the short and sweet cows come home.

Good morning, all! Well, the vicodin didn't kill me. I'm sure the news will cheer my friends and aggravate my enemies. I bet that Lady M had already figured out what she'd do with her extra share of the Ohio property/
Surprisingly, since I'd been expecting all day to be rendered unconscious by the drug, I had a helluva time getting to sleep. Unsurprisingly, there were several bizarre dreams, including my managing a bus/recording tour. All I remember is being in the now-defunct Patelspn's Music Shop on West 56th Street.

My gums are still tender from the pressure of the dentist's work, especially the lower left jaw, but everything seems much more pain free than yesterday.

This morning I learned that Jack Gottlieb, who was Bernstein's faithful acolyte for years, died at age 80 of prostate cancer. Jack was a peculiar bird who worshipped Lenny, wrote his catalogue of works and many of his program and record notes, as well as a rather fauning book about working with LB last year. Jack was a strange man with a lot of baggage that kept me at arm's length, but a very good one. I had met him through the Gay Men's Chorus when they performed one of his choral pieces around 1982. He also was a good composer. I can't say we were friends but we were friendly.

Today, two priorities: the EILEEN edits I did not begin yesterday and the laundry.

Also shocked to learn of Jack Gottlieb's passing  through an internet list.  We hadn't seen him in many years, but had seen him quite a few times for a period in the 1990's.

I did wonder this morning and imagine he would have been pleased to know that his accomplishments would be recalled in a lovely obit such as this one in the Guardian in the U.K.

TOD: Fried chicken, chicken-fried chicken, chicken-fried bacon, bacon, fried artichoke hearts, fried butter, fried Oreos, fried fish, fried hush puppies, fried turkey, fried shrimp, fried oysters ... Haven't met too many fried foods I haven't liked, when fried properly. But the funniest thing: I don't fry anything at home.

As fro gravies,, I haven't met too many I haven't liked. For Easter, there were two, one from the crown roast and a red-eye gravy from the ham. I hadn't had red-eye in years, but it's now sharing the top of the list.

Elmore, are you going to see Derek Jacobi and Gina McKee in "King Lear"?

It's my favorite Shakespeare play, and I would love to see it. I've only seen it live once and that was at the Old Vic in London with Peter Hall's Company in 1998. However, since I'm currently in cash flow hell, I sincerely doubt it.

Sorry to hear about Jack Gottlieb and another name to a growing list.

Jack was a weird bird. When I first met him, it was in the beginning of the AIDS panic, with members of the Men's Chorus dropping like flies. He lived on West 79th Street, which was a short walk.  I'd go over to visit occasionally, snce we'd become friendly and he borrowed some books of mine. He was writing a book on the influence of Jewish music on popular American music, and he did a spectacular program one evening at the old Village Gate. Whenever I'd come to visit, Jack would get into these heavy "I-know-I've-got-AIDS-and I'm gonna-die" discussions, and then one day he made a big pass at me. I kept him at arm's length after that!

Still, we remained friendly and whenever I'd see him, he'd say "I've got books to return to you." I have no idea now what they might even be! The last time I saw him was at Charlie Harmon's "Farewell New York" party. Charlie had been Bernstein's personal assistant, and he was in charge of Bernstein's publishing for a while until that ugly toad Harry Kraut drive him to quit.

I'm saving the rest for the memoirs.

Kritzerland at the Gardenia 9 was fabulous last night! Mark and I both really enjoyed it. This was the fourth one we've been too, and in familiar fashion, this one didn't disappoint. I do remember someone saying, "key change" in the middle of a song, but I couldn't remember who or what song. Now I know, and I know why. Poor thing. The kid performances were great, complete with choreography and Alet Taylor was wonderful as well as hilarious. I missed hearing Damon Kirsch at this one, but Jason Graae was terrific, as usual. And we even got to hear Bruce sing a little! Actually, it would be nice if Guy Haines was added to the cast for a whole song. We miss his voice too. After hearing the two versions of "Dance a Little Closer," I must say, I think Guy Haines's version, which was performed at S.T.A.GE., was superior.

Mark, once again, ordered linguini with butter and olive oil. As you may recall, last time they brought him a plate of hot dry pasta, a dish of butter, and a bottle of olive, so he could make it himself. Well, this time they actually melted the butter and put it on his pasta for him, and just brought him the bottle of olive oil to apply as he wished. And he ate it all up.

I'm not leaving the neighborhood today.

I did find, on a nonpaying site that forces me to go to a paying site for further info, that my friend may have died in Clinton, Michigan, in 1972. I guess I need to look for an online source for Michigan newspapers to find an obituary.

It was nice to see Mark and Amy at the Gardenia.  The key change line they're remembering is actually part of the song in which it was used - no the missed key change was in Brand New World - he actually changed keys one verse too early - unbelievable.  But he was off the entire night - thankfully no one but the singers and Adryan Russ and I really was all that aware of it.  Can't use him again.  Of all the MDs we've had, the only one that's been perfect in every way - as accompanist, to work with me on arrangements, and for ease is John Boswell, and frankly I wish he could do them all.

Fido goes to war:

Quote
While many Americans are anxious to meet and commend the team of Navy SEALs who raided the compound in Abottabad, Pakistan, and killed Usama bin Laden, one team member would be happy just to receive a doggie treat.

Among the commandos was a heroic canine – a bomb-sniffing dog who was attached to a team member as the SEALs were lowered from a Black Hawk helicopter into bin Laden’s hideout, The Sun reports.

...

There are currently 600 dogs serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, Ensign Brynn Olsen of U.S. Central Command told the New York Times. In 2008, Gen. David Petraeus, current U.S. commander in charge of Afghanistan and soon to be CIA director, called for an increase in the number of dogs used by the military.

“The capability they bring to the fight cannot be replicated by man or machine,” Petraeus said. “By all measures of performance, their yield outperforms any asset we have in our industry.”

Interesting that you should mention escargots, DB, as I just this moment went out to get the mail and there sliming its way across my sidewalk was an honest to goodness snail, replete with shell.  I don't think I've ever seen a "shelled" snail here before.

To keep it in line with "announce" and "annunciation".

With "denounce" and "denunciation".

With "renounce" and "renunciation."

A clip from the upcoming "Company" video from Elmore's favorite, Lonny Price.

Although it's a crowd pleaser to have have the cast in hats, I kept want to ask, "Does anyone still wear ...," well, you know.

And I don't like the way Bobby is the only one singing, "Give another number to me." It changes the meaning of the song too much.

Obviously the on-set of his dementia.

I worked alongside(?) Mr. Laurents when he directed Hallelujah, Baby! down at Arena Stage, and during the final casting sessions for the revival of Gypsy with Patti LuPone. He was quite difficult during Baby! - he even requested that the trumpet player be fired. However, even though he was still quite set in his ways during Gypsy, I will say that I did notice a bit of "levity" in his demeanor. And I still remember him pulling aside the "second runner-up" for Dainty June to tell her why she was not going to get the part.

I heard that BK and Guy Haines have been feuding.

Got a fascinating packet today from Tamiment concerning my infamous Uncle, including a neat article on him published in THE NATION (my other Uncle--the Spy--got a 1962 cover story in THE NATION).  There was also a very snarky "bio" by a vet of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.  Most interestingly, there was in IV with a rather famous NYC politician whom my Uncle got elected (he was his campaign manager).  This individual, who was one of the Executors of Charlie's estate, claimed that Charlie died deeply in debt with no assets and that it took him (the politician) two years to get the Estate out of debt.  How interesting then that Charlie's Estate, which includes a Trust to fund left-leaning artists, was valued at well over $10 million when my other Uncle died and my sisters and I were back in NYC dealing with all of this shtuff.

Happy Birthday to dear George - I hope your sister has made you a cake  -- or a pavilion

Thanks, Vixmom!  I don't know what dessert we'll have, but the family is getting together on Saturday and ordering pizza from a local pizza parlour called Dirty Dave's.  They're the best!

I thought you were going out to celebrate on Friday?

Just read that Arthur Laurents has died at the age of 93.

Evil Arthur is dead? He was a talented, ridiculously malignant bitch.

I heard that he wanted to do GYPSY in its original Yiddish!

Plans changed yesterday.  It'll be easier for everyone to get together on Saturday, and we can get together earlier and stay together longer.

Oh, and the pizza place has changed, too...as of about 10 minutes ago!  My mom called and said that her friend Mona said that Dirty Dave's hasn't been that good lately, but that this other place was much better.  Actually, I don't really care, as long as I can get pepperoni and pineapple pizza with extra cheese and extra sauce.  That's my absolute favorite pizza. :D

I have.  They're pretty good.  I haven't gone there very much at all because they're out by my parents' house, and when I go to my parents' house, I usually go there for dinner.

Sorry to read about Arthur Laurents. I have a book of some of his non-musical plays. I've only read one of them. Will have to read more.

TOD:

I forgot that I had a deep-fried poached egg recently that was simply wonderful. That's right, the chef took a perfectly marvelous poached egg, battered it and deep-fried it quickly, so you got batter as well as egg yolk running all over a fillet of perfectly fresh fish beneath it.

When I MD'd the west coast premiere of PUTTING IT TOGETHER, my band was on a raised dais upstage, and we always had to suppress giggles in Act II every night when the Squeaky Fromme song from ASSASSINS came up, the shot was fired, and 300 people twitched simultaneously.  :)

Today was a busy day. I left work early and went to help set up the Friends of the Library book sale.  OMG.  We have 1710 BOXES of books.   It took forever to unload the moving vans...yup, more than one moving van packed full of boxes of books.   We took them off the truck and put them in the general area where they should be.  Then people unpacked enough boxes to fill the 120 tables.  Then we opened all the other boxes and turned the books spine up so that people could see the books without having to dig through the boxes.  I know they'll be a mess very quickly, but it's starting to look pretty good.   I worked for 4 1/2 hours before I gave up.

There was another night when the sequencer I was using for the Piano II parts (the company was too cheap to hire two keyboard players) malfunctioned and the metronome started chiming loudly.  Luckily it was in the Night Music sequence and blended right in until I could turn the damn thing off.  :)

I decided to pick up the complete works of Charles Dickens.  It's 2 boxes full of books, copyright 1894 (or something like that)  I think there are something like 24 books!  I picked up a couple other books.  I'm sure I'll find more when I'm there Friday and Saturday nights.  I've never experienced opening night of the book sale.  I guess it's really crazy.

Well... I went out for a late dinner with my friend, Yosh. And since it was Cinco de Mayo, we asked the bartender to mix up something with tequila.  Well... Whoa!.... <hiccup>

And what do you think they're saying on the chat boards about Mr. Laurents' passing?  "This is such shocking news."  Note to idiots:  It's not shocking when a man who has lived and worked for ninety-three years dies.  Shocking is when a twelve year old dies, or a twenty year old or a sixty year old.
