Title: LA NOIR
Post by: bk on May 06, 2011, 12:29:38 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were vaguely noir and had vaguely the old ennui, and now it is time for you to post until the noir cows come home.

And here is the head's up on our new release - I'm hoping it will be a quick sellout, so don't wait too long - and believe me, you want this.  You know the drill - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack:

MULHOLLAND FALLS
Music Composed and Conducted by Dave Grusin

THIS ISN’T AMERICA, THIS IS LOS ANGELES

Sometimes it’s just timing.  Sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw.  In 1996, an LA film noir called Mulholland Falls was released.  Very much attempting to tap into the feel of the film Chinatown, it received some good reviews and some bad reviews; but not many people in 1996 cared to see a period LA film noir set in the early 1950s, despite its excellent cast, which included Nick Nolte, Chaz Palminteri, Jennifer Connelly, John Malkovich, Melanie Griffith, Chris Penn, Michael Madsen, Andrew McCarthy, and Treat Williams, as well as small roles played by Bruce Dern, Louise Fletcher, Rob Lowe and William Peterson.  One year later, LA Confidential opened, and suddenly a period LA film noir set in the early 1950s was all the rage with audiences and critics.  It’s interesting to think about what would have happened if the two films had come out in reverse order.

Mulholland Falls was loosely based on a real-life group of LA policemen known as the “Hat Squad” who pretty much did things as they pleased in the days long before the Miranda decision.  It also concerned itself with secretly filmed incriminating lurid movies, the A-bomb testing in Nevada, and a mystery rife with cover-ups and secrets and immorality lurking around every corner.   In other words, business as usual for an LA noir.  Roger Ebert really liked the film, saying, “This is the kind of movie where every note is put in lovingly.  It’s a 1950s crime movie, but with a modern, ironic edge.”  The Los Angeles Times’ Kenneth Turan also liked it, and said, “Mulholland Falls combines a vivid sense of place with a visceral directorial style that fuses controlled fury onto everything it touches.”

The film disappeared quickly, but developed a cult following from its many cable showings and various video releases.  Seen today, it is a moody, evocative, well-paced noir, with a powerhouse cast – and a lot of what works about the film can be traced to its score by Dave Grusin.  Not only does his music do everything that film music is supposed to do, i.e. propel the film, establish its moods, define its characters, and illuminate its story, but apart from the film it is a great listening experience – its themes are beautiful and memorable, exciting and melancholy, mysterious and smoky and intoxicating.  In fact, it’s one of the best noir scores ever written, and right up there with other classics of the post-1970s noir scores, Chinatown (Jerry Goldsmith), Farewell, My Lovely (David Shire), and LA Confidential (Goldsmith again).

The score to Mulholland Falls was issued on CD concurrent with the film’s release, on Edel.  That CD presented about thirty-eight minutes of score and the classic song “Harbor Lights,” sung by Aaron Neville (who performs it on camera in the movie).  That release has been long out of print and brings pricey collector prices.  For this release, we’ve gone back to the original two-track mixed masters and discovered quite a nice number of cues that were not on the original Edel CD.  So, for the first time we are presenting the complete score to the film, in film order (the original CD is, for the most part, in film order and is very well sequenced, but the missing cues are really good and really give the score a cohesive quality that is quite addictive), along with an alternate version of the main title.

Dave Grusin is a master film composer, and Mulholland Falls is right at the top of his prodigious output.  So, just surrender yourself because there’s no way not to be caught in the spider web of its sinuous, silky musical world; a tone poem of doomed romance, conspiracy, and an LA that doesn’t exist anymore.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the third week of June – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Friday is a work day.

Last night at rehearsal I told a bunch of little girls to shut up and listen to the director, and they just laughed....although they did shut up.

I HATE HATE HATE working in shows with children who don't really care about being in a show and know nothing and listen to nothing and are generally useless.  They run around the theater during rehearsal and always have to ask ONCE AGAIN where they are supposed to be and WHAT are we doing.....HATE HATE HATE.  And the NEVER shut up.

I now remember why I never audition for big musicals.

There ARE three children out of the group to whom the above does NOT apply.

Sounds good!

We are having dinner at the Kennedy Center cafe. We had other plans but there have been adjustments to the weekend due to DC participant business/work issues so a simple dinner at the Cafe will be the plan for us.

I'm not a huge fan of Elaine Paige but otherwise I'm very excited about the show. Miss Lavin as Hattie Walker and Terri White as Stella Deems!!! Also the great Ron Raines and Danny Burstein (both personal friends of Dear Larry). I'm happy!

I'm convinced tha LaPeters, who is not a virtuoso performer for every Sondheim lead, is poor casting as Sally, so I hope your reviews prove me wrong. Here's the music geek observation o' the day:  I'm listening to George Shearing's exquisite Bossa Nova album for the first time in years (it would make a great reissue, BK).  I just noticed today that Clare Fischer, the consummate orchestrator/arranger, interpolated his own "Carnaval,"  a lovely and quite dissonant song, into his arrangement of "Green Dolphin Street."  That is all.

Quote
And what do you think they're saying on the chat boards about Mr. Laurents' passing?  "This is such shocking news."  Note to idiots:  It's not shocking when a man who has lived and worked for ninety-three years dies.  Shocking is when a twelve year old dies, or a twenty year old or a sixty year old.

This made me laugh.  I was shocked when my 98 year old grandfather died.  I was shocked because I always expected him to live 100 years.  He only missed his birthday by a few months.

And while I enjoyed Arthur Laurents' work, I know of a particularly cruel casting couch episode that never made me fond of the man.

Laurents was on the original board of directors for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, and he was a total horror. I think the only good thng he did - and I believe he was the source - was to involve Steve Sondheim to the Chorus. He got his nose bent out of joint over a medley of songs from "La Cage aux Folles" that I had arranged, sent the Chorus MD a nasty note condemning the medley and me, and resigned. As Mary Rodgers Guettel said about him a couple of years ago, "Call me when he's dead."

I love his play "Invitation to a March," which is essentially "The Sleeping Beauty" set in the Hamptons.

He got his nose bent out of joint over a medley of songs from "La Cage aux Folles" that I had arranged, sent the Chorus MD a nasty note condemning the medley and me, and resigned. As Mary Rodgers Guettel said about him a couple of years ago, "Call me when he's dead."

Did the chorus perform the medley anyway?

He heard it in performance. I didn't hear the story until long after, but I don't think anyone on the board was sorry to see him leave. I didn't care one way or the other since I never met Evil Arthur. I think "La Cage Aux Folles" would have become a better musical if every gay man in the opening night Boston audience hadn't kvelled and stood up at the end. Maybe Arthur and Harvey would have fixed the show and given us a better score instead of relaxing with "we're a hit!"

This has nothing to do with Laurents, but your comment reminded me of a story about INVITATION TO A MARCH.

Back in Seattle during the early 1960s, there was a young actress whose name was "Pam".

At auditions, she gave the greatest reading you ever heard...and directors who didn't know her would always give her the role.  In fact, I gave her the female lead in the first play I ever directed.

 :'(

The problem was that Pam never grew from that first reading.  No matter how much direction you gave her, she was cemented into that initial performance.

I don't know what Pam's father did, but he claimed he was close friends with a "big shot" at MGM, who would be sure to fly up to Seattle to see Pam perform.  [Now, you know why I didn't replace her, as I wanted to.]  The guy never came.

 >:(

A couple years go by, and Daddy somehow gets the financing for a 1-week run of INVITATION TO A MARCH at Seattle's Moore Theater...where a lot of national companies played.  And, they hire Hugh Marlowe and his then wife, K.T. Stevens, to play the leads.

Naturally, Pam is cast as the young girl in the play.

During rehearsal, Marlowe and Stevens are sitting in the audience, watching Pam play a scene, and a disgusted Marlowe leans over to his wife and says in a loud whisper, "F**k her!"

 ;)

A couple of years later, Pam went to Hollywood and a publicity photo appeared in the Seattle paper of her with Paul Newman.  She was an extra in THE PRIZE, which was an MGM picture.

When I saw the movie, I could not spot her.

No idea what happened to her after that.

My fave pizza is bacon and pineapple. But i also like ham and pineapple.

When I was a younger, I would usually ask for either pepperoni and sausage OR Canadian bacon (ham) and pineapple.  When I went to college in Bellingham, a suitemate said that his favorite pizza was pepperoni and pineapple.  I thought that that sounded good, so one time I tried it.  I love it and it's been my favorite ever since!

And...no extra cheese ever??  I don't usually ask for extra cheese (mainly because like extra toppings, it's an extra cost), but I would hope that it's at least an option.

I have an Arthur Laurents story.  A couple of years ago my friend  from England and I went to see Jane Fonda in "33 Variations" on Broadway.  During the show we heard some groans from the row behind us.

At different points during the show a sign would be held up saying "9th Variation," or "18th Variation."   When the sign came up "23rd Variation," we heard the man say "oh, no, 10 more!"

After the show, as we made our way up the aisle I spotted Arthur Laurents and pointed him out to my friend, Glenn.  Glenn said "that's the man who was groaning!"

We went to the stage door afterwards and after a while the door opened and who should walk out but Mr. Laurents.  He started to make his way down the street.  A few seconds later his assistant (?) came out, looking frantically for him.  I said "he went that way."

Jack, my friend Sharry and I often discuss the same things.  Both of us have been doing theater for over half a century, but times have really changed.  When I was young, if I got cast in a main stage production, I was so grateful to be in the show that I didn't even sneeze unless I asked the director first.

Now, it is a question of entitlement.  Young people in theater feel that they shouldn't have to start out in the chorus or in the small speaking parts.  They expect to be cast in the prime ingenue roles from day one; and if they don't get that role, then they don't want the role.  As a result you end up with young people who have no desire to be at rehearsals and feel that there is no reason why they pay attention to anyone.

Back from a nice visit to the Colony Theater, where we'll be recording Jason Graae's Jerry Herman show.  All details are known and it should be fun.

Will there be signed copies available?

I'm back from Dayton, having opted out of the optional lunch after the seminar.  They were going to BW3 and I decided that sounded like someplace I didn't need to eat.  I did an errand and came on home to eat a heart-healthy lunch.

BW3?

BW3 = Buffalo Wild Wings and Weck. -Although the "and Weck" part is not part of the chain's National branding.

Well, a second blessing has come my way today (I see the insulin as one). I got the job that I interviewed for a few months ago. I'm starting on a temporary basis of three months, but if it works out, it could be permanent. It's with USAA, which is headquartered here.

Congratulations!

Reading about DR George's favorite pizza. I have never heard of pepperoni and pineapple. Also I don't think people here ever ask for extra sauce or extra cheese.

DR Jennifer - Well... The next time you go out for pizza... Ask. ;)

I am pooped out!!!  I had a VERY busy day at the office then went to the book sale where my job was to be on the floor cleaning up the tables as people messed them up, cleaning up the boxes of books under the tables as people messed them up and adding more books to the tables as space opened up.  I didn't have one break from 6:00 to 9:00.  It was crazy.  I've certainly gotten exersize this week

Somebody from church gave me tickets to the symphony tonight, which was great. It was part of their Tschaikovsky (sp?) festival and they were playing all of his symphonies over a two-week period, with the ballet doing some of his work and other performances. Tonight, it was the 1st and 5th symphony.

Wonderful work and everybody seemed highly energized. Just a whole lot of fun.

Next season, the symphony will be doing all of Beethoven's nine, plus a piano group is planning on performing all of  his piano solo pieces and a chamber group will do some of his other works.

I like this spirit of getting all the music groups in the area involved in a theme. There are also lectures and seminars, radio programs and some local TV on the PBS station.

DR Jose, I have type 2 diabetes. My dad has it, his dad had it, my sister has it. It runs in the family. I thought I was doing OK in keeping it under control, but I've gotten lazy about exercising and eating right since starting school. I have to admit I wasn't feeling as well as I should have, and I hope I'm hearing the wake-up call.

I started by having shrimp tacos tonight without eating the tortillas. No corn, no taters, no white flour, no rice. And I just learned how to make bread. Oy.

Finished watching my shows from last night...

THE OFFICE is not so funny with Will Ferrell

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT was mostly funny.

OUTSOURCED was highly funny, and sweet.

Now to bed. I have a lot of Bollywood movies to watch tomorrow, so I want to get an early start.

I've been falling all my life and never broke anything until a few years back.  Now it seems if i fall i'm guaranteed to break.

Today i fractured my right wrist in several places.  the good news is it was the good kind that doesn't require surgery.  i see my orthopedist on tuesday as he was once again the doctor on call at emergency.

I was supposed to go see Patsy Cline tonight..................... ah, but she died.

Actually this is the musical ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE, but my friend Betzy is stuck working this evening, so we have to postpone until next week.

Last month, Capital Playhouse announced that that will be one of their shows next season.

Just had to share. :)
