Good Evening!

Greetings from New York City!

-The bus ride back up to NYC was uneventful and non-traffic-delayed. In fact, we even got in about 20 minutes earlier than scheduled. :)

bk - Welcome back to New York City! -And it sounds like you had a great night at Joe Allen! -And so glad you got to see both Kay and Baayork. -I think I'm seeing Baayork again later in the week. In any case...

What exactly is your schedule tomorrow? Are you planning any sort of "after-party" after The Singer's show at The Metropolitan Room? If so, I may be able to meet you after my show.

DR JohnG - What was the dipping sauce for that Deep-Fried Twinkie and Oreo? Chocolate sauce? -I will give the Chip Shop in Brooklyn credit for serving their Deep-Fried Twinkies with a fresh raspberry coulis. -It's a side of fruit. ;) -And then you can have a one of their deep-fried candy bars to go with it. Alas, I just missed their Deep-Fried Cadbury Egg season.

Ricky woke me up at 4:30,  I put him out of the room, but soon realized that even with the window open it was still hot and humid.  It's 75 degrees and 66 degrees dew point. Yuck. It's going to be 97 degrees today... 97 degrees! That's just obscene.   I'm sure the ladies on BK's flight would find it fascinating ;)

Good morning, all! I will shortly head out the door for a long day of work on this Appalachian Christmas piece, I went rght to sleep, only to be awakened around 3 am with godawful allergy problems that kept me awake until around 4 am when the Chlortrimetron kicked in and I was able to get back to sleep. The pollen count must be in the deadly zone; I would swear that my entire mouth, epiglottis, and lungs are coated in a fine silt. It's most unpleasant.

Last night at Joe Allen was a real hoot, and I hadn't seen Kay Cole, who performed in a lot of benefits for the Men's Chorus, in at least 25 years. She's still beautuful and wonderful. I love Baayork Lee, and she told me to tell you hello, DR Jose! I'm hoping this day, which I think will be a bit hellish for several reasons I can't go into at the moment, doesn't go into the early evening because I do want to see Laura at the Metropolitan Room; she's a very lovely lady. I liked her,

All right, more coffee, make the bed, get out!

If I can add my two cents into yesterday's discussion of the BOOK OF MORMON cast recording:  having viewed an ootlegbay of the show, I would agree that as a stand alone, the score lacks.  But the songs really are so strongly coupled with the staging that it would be unfair to judge the show based on the score alone.  This really is the most delightful and funny show I've "seen" since HAIRSPRAY.  I can't wait until I really get to see it in July.

It's funny to see y'all discuss BOOK OF MORMON, as a NYC city writer-friend of mine just weighed in with much the same remarks.  He saw the show in previews (he said tickets were easy to get then).  He said he wasn't sure if the score rose much above pastische, but that it's pretty good pastische, and he said the book was absolutely hilarious.

Barry Pearl is simply delightful (even when getting  in-good-spirit boo's when his character says dumb-husband stuff) in BABY IT'S YOU.

There's a lot more that could have been done with the story, and it called out for a few new songs for those moments, though.  But the songs and costumes are loads and loads of fun.

Back from my lunch.  The show tonight is going to be very lightly attended, sadly, thanks to the singer's booking it on the night of the Mac Awards.  The fellow who helps book her NY stuff assured her it would not be a problem and he was stupid and wrong and is now apologizing.  He's had a week to do damage control and, as far as I can tell, he's done zero.  Had anyone told me the Mac Awards thing at any point I would have stopped this folly.  I've made a few calls and our very own Rodzinski is now coming and will try to rustle up some folks.  I'm still hoping elmore can be there  because otherwise right now there are about five people coming.

BK - Is she the type who can make a running joke of it with aplomb, like "And now here's one I performed on the night that ___ won the Golden Globe - I wasn't actually at the Golden Globes but it was that night" -

It could be cute!  or maybe not!  or maybe a routine for a future show of hers.  Lord knows Skip's made lots of jokes about the night the person who books 88's assured Skip that he'd get an audience the night of the Tonys, that the crowds don;t overlap.  (His show was at capacity every week but the Tony night.)

just trying to make lemonade of lemons.

DR Ron Pulliam - sorry, I missed your question yesterday!  In order to minimize the fat content, I simmer the chicken and remove the skin.  Then, after I dredge it in an egg wash and a flour/spice mixture, it requires just a few minutes in the deep fryer to crisp up the coating.  This is how I've always done it and the only further adjustment, post heart attack, was to reduce the amount of salt in the coating.

I stopped directing or considering Tams-Witmark musicals because for smaller parts they sent "sides" - and you lost a week or more of rehearsals because people didn't get how to use them OR you had to copy lots of parts.....

BUT as I was looking at the material for CAMELOT that arrived yesterday - I find that they now send small books with complete scenes for the characters!!!

I am so very happy.....no more struggling and no more copying.....plus with the extra one I ordered....I have 5 full scripts for major characters!

I like her voice. :)

THIS (http://www.amazon.com/Siren-Laura-Wolfe/dp/B000CAKEF4/ref=cm_cmu_pg__header) is another CD by a Laura Wolfe, and the singer certainly sounds like her, but the picture doesn't look exactly like her.  AND this CD isn't mentioned in her bio on her website (http://www.laurawolfe.net/bio.html).

I am home. I just got in, and it's too late to change out of my play clothes and get to the show. I really had hoped we'd be finished by 5:30 so I'm a bit irritable. It's hard moving a group when there are several opinions and other options to weigh. We did get a lot accomplished. We laid out the routining, and I wrote out some things that will probably change once we learn the ranges of the singers. I also worked up with the Musical Director a nice haunting accompaniment for "The West Virginia Mine Disaster."

So, I'm feeling very good about this Appalachian piece but I feel terrible about the situation at the Metropolitan Room for Laura. I asked Ben this morning in an email if he and Anthony were going to attend, and I hope others show up.

Thank you DR's TCB, Laura, George, & MBarnum.  I'm beginning to get nervous.

It will go fine. But, in case it doesn't:

What the world does not need: a tour of "Wonderland." Why can't it just close and go away?

I also love the number.  I asked Brent about working with Michael Jeter.  He had nothing but praise.

Tacoma Musical Playhouse has announced their 2011-2012 season.  One of the shows they are doing is HAPPY DAYS - THE MUSICAL.  I can't believe it.  I have tried and tried to get them to listen to THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X.  Instead they dcide to do HAPPY DAYS.

One of the best showstoppers ever. And one of the best numbers on the Tonys, though I want to kill the cameraman for cutting away from Jeter to show the chorus. You can hear the audience gasp over Jeter.

super vibes for DR JANE!

I am sure Joe Allen is a rollicking place about now, even though no one from Long Island can get into the city what with the derailed train and all......if she had only known, the publicist could have ridden in with DR VIXMOM this morning.

Fine rehearsal....no DR TCB, Marian isn't on Social Security....yet......  Auditions were a bit sparse for this show.....more KIDS than anything.....it's kind of sad.....

I am hoping I get plenty of adults for CAMELOT!

And yes, DR LAURA - I am as happy as if you had an ash tray in your car!

I can hardly wait to hear about MR BK's evening.

DR MBARNUM - sometimes MR BK refers to The Singer, et al, as such so they won't be searchable on Google, I think.

I am going to watch THOROUGHBREDS DON'T CRY.....I still marvel at the scene when Mickey Rooney is riding on a horse behind Ronald Sinclair, and the Mick's riding style makes it look as if something else is going on indeed......and of course the scene where Mickey pulls poor Ronald's pants down about ten times.....

Even when I was very small and saw this movie.....it all seemed very outre to me.

DR Cillaliz did you and your mom pick your favorites yet on DWTS?

I felt so bad for my 2nd favorites Ralph and Karina. What a tough night. But wow, they did amazing considering they could nto practice.

Mom likes Hines and Kim.  I was sort of partial to Romeo...  Not sure who I like the best

I had a nice long conversation with DR Samantha today.  She had a final exam today and has another tomorrow, so she's delaying her celebration of her birthday until she finishes with school.   She is doing very well and seems to be quite happy.   I hope she decides to stop by here later

Back from the ill-attended show - seven people, but The Singer did great and it was fun.  And yes, it's the same Laura Wolfe.  Then we went to Joe Allen and Jose and his pal came and it was grand fun.  We're hoping he'll come out to play some Kritzerland shows in LA towards the end of the year.  Jackie Mason was the only celeb I saw, save for Dan Luria and director Casey Nicolaw.  But Bud Cort was there again.

And, yes, after me and my pal, Yosh, saw Wicked, we headed to 46th Street - a.k.a. Restaurant Row - to join bk, The Singer and DR Rodzinski - a.k.a. Tom - for a bite to eat and some sparkling and sometimes scandalous conversation. I was glad I got to introduce Yosh to the man who produced one of his favorite tracks ever: Kristin Chenoweth's "Lion Tamer".

Topic of the Day:

For musicals, I'd love to have seen Follies or Anyone Can Whistle or Show Boat.

Plays: Auntie Mame or Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf or The Black Crook or anything by Shakespeare (even though these last two weren't on Broadway).

And as for Wicked.... It was my first time seeing the show since I saw the original cast back in the January of 2004(!). The show is in good shape. The current Elphaba, Teal Wicks, is wonderful. -I've adored her voice ever since I played an audition for her a couple of years ago.

So... I'll post this now, as well as tomorrow...

It looks like there is a chance for two HHW mini-get-togethers tomorrow - Wednesday.  The first one can take place before bk sees Baby, It's You, and the second one can take place after bk sees Baby, It's You.

The pre-show gathering could take place between 5:00-7:30 at a place to be determined.

The after-show gathering will most likely take place back at Joe Allen.

If anyone is interested, just post your interests here, and we'll take it from there.
