Darn about HUMAN TARGET.

Jennifer the break isn't stable and will continue to grow without a pin, which i presume is metal but forgot to ask, to hold it in place while it heals.  it will be removed, in office, once i heal.  hopefully the cure won't do other damage such as affecting a nerve in my thumb.

I'm going to have blood drawn at 7am. I'm having a physical next Tuesday and I'm having the blood work done before so the doctor has the results. I haven't eaten since yesterday morning (I wanted to fast before the blood was drawn). I'm very hungry.

I will eat breakfast after 7am.

Good morning, all! I have to be out opf here by 8:30 to visit my barber. Following that, I shall wend my way down to Toyland since I need to work at a piano for a couple of hours. I no longer have a pano, since I tossed mine out during the dreadful bed bug plague of 2008, and the piano at Toyland, which was given to me by the late Russell Warner when he moved to Seattle, is now mine. Until I know the official status of the Toyland project, I'l let the piano stay there; I really do not have room for it here, much as I could use it this week. So, I'll be at Toyland today.

I have no other news at the moment.

Jane Powell thought that the fact that both she and Debbie Reynolds wore the same blue gown to the charity ball was simply irenic.

Culinaria, the food and wine festival that I help out with, got under way last night. Tonight is wine dinner night, so there go a few hours.

This afternoon I'm attending the graduation of a woman I used to work with at the newspaper. She was dedicated to getting her degree even if it meant only one class a semester. Glad to see Jenny has made it.

Last night's rehearsal of Act I of The Music Man was excellent, except every time the AD called blackout - 10,000 screaming kids wanted to know "what scene is next" or "what scene is this?" or "I don't know where to go" or "I wasn't here when we blocked this, where I am supposed to be?"

So that made the process MUCH longer than it needed to be.

Greetings from Toyland!

I never liked Gerald Bordman who was pompous, arrogant, and a lousy author. He lived in Bucks County, PA, and he would come into the Drama Book Shop on Saturdays before a matinee and play "author." I remember two things about him:
  1. When Bill Tynes produced a 1985 centennial concert for Jerome Kern, for which I supplied several orchestrations, everyone involved got a "Jerome Kern Centennial" button, which I wore on my coat; Bordman jumped me in the theatre district one Saturday demanding to know wty I was wearing the button; he was the author of a Kern biography!
  2. One day at the Drama Book Shop, I had a reference call about what one-acts were in Thornton Wilder's "Plays for Bleeker Street." I went to Bordman's book on American Theatre and discovered Wilder had only written five plays: THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH, OUR TOWN, THE MATCHMAKER, PULLMAN CAR HIAWATHA, and THE LONG CHRISTMAS DINNER; I was so pissed that I called his publisher, asked to speak to the editor and told him Bordman's books were worthless for reference!

GIRL GROUPS:  The Boswell Sisters, The Andrews Sisters, The Dixie Cups, The Shirelles, Martha and the Vandellas
BOY GROUPS: The Drifters, JQ and the Bandits

I have been having a grand ol' time perusing the Variety archives, albeit in "preview mode" (which only gives me access to dribs and drabs), ferreting out information about Miss Frances Farmer.  She was the "it" girl of 1936-37, there's no question.  Full page ads touting her performances, articles by the handful virtually daily.  Really interesting to read.

His books are skimpy on facts, and I have found several faults/errors in them. But they are indispensable if only because there are no other works like that around. I enjoyed the Kern bio, but his flimsy book on the American revue was practically worthless.

Thunderstorms happening all around and the possibility of tornadoes and hail. But we're getting our first decent rain in many months, probably the first real precipitation since the snow, so I can't complain too much.

I will likely have to miss my friend's graduation because I ain't driving in that.

I wonder what the Weather Channel women on BK's earlier flight would make of it.

DR MBARNUM - the Hanna "book" is pretty useless.....very few words on either Allison or AOTFFW - both of which are mentioned more profusely in the foreward by the editor than by Mark Hanna in the text.

Oh well....it was only 3.99 - but not even worth that.

Has anyone heard of the National Jukebox (http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/)?  It's a website of "Historical Recordings from the Library of Congress."

The Library of Congress presents the National Jukebox, which makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives.

Just came from facebook. I belong to a lot of book groups. And they are all quite upset over facebook's new promotional rules that came into place yesterday (or were enforced starting yesterday).

A lot of authors do book giveaways on facebook. And apparently now you are not allowed to do this anymore. I think this really sucks. Although they are all trying to figure out what they can do. Some are setting up blogs.

Why didn't you eat lunch or dinner yesterday?

I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!
Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?
Kids!
They a disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!
While we're on the subject:
Kids!
You can talk and talk till your face is blue!
Kids!
But they still just do what they want to do!
Why can't they be like we were,
Perfect in every way?
What's the matter with kids today?
Kids!
I've tried to raise him the best I could
Kids! Kids!
Laughing, singing, dancing, grinning, morons!
And while we're on the subject!
Kids! They are just impossible to control!
Kids! With their awful clothes and their rock an' roll!
Why can't they dance like we did

Has anyone heard of the National Jukebox (http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/)?  It's a website of "Historical Recordings from the Library of Congress."

The Library of Congress presents the National Jukebox, which makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives.

It's pretty darned cool!

cool & thanks

Just came from facebook. I belong to a lot of book groups. And they are all quite upset over facebook's new promotional rules that came into place yesterday (or were enforced starting yesterday).

A lot of authors do book giveaways on facebook. And apparently now you are not allowed to do this anymore. I think this really sucks. Although they are all trying to figure out what they can do. Some are setting up blogs.

funny i haven't know about any of this.  i have friends who complain they have maXED ON THE NUMBER OF FRIENDS THEY CAN HAVE OR THE NUMBER OF GROUPS THEY CAN LIKE.

Greetings from Memphis!!  I'm having a great time and the travel vibes worked wonders.  My flight landed early and since there seemed to be a shortage of cabs, they put me in a cab with two men going to the Peabody.  when we arrived there they said they'd split the cost to that point and i could just pay to my hotel.  LOL, so they each paid 18 and I would have only had to pay 5.   I gave the cabbie an extra 5.  It was still 20 less than what I would have paid had I taken the cab myself.

I had no idea when I signed up for this conference that it's become quite an event.  The same person has organized it for 7 years and as he said tonight..."Any one can have a CLE....we want you to learn AND party"  So when we checked in we each got a goodie bag, water candy, potato chips, nuts, sunflower seeds...you name it.  All sorts of goodies for the room.   They have hospitatility suites in two different hotels where you can go have free wine, goodies just hang out etc.

They have shuttles for every event, to get to the conference etc.  And everyone is SO friendly

This afternoon, I jumped on the shuttle and headed to the cooking contest.  I did the public favorite tasting.  I wasn't really impressed with the 5 I got to taste, but it was still fun.  I quickly realized that the key to the whole thing is you have to be associated with a team. If you aren't you can't taste anything, you can't really join them and hang out. You can just sort of walk around and look at things.   I did find out tomorrow night we are associated with a team and our group will have a place to hang out. So it will be much more fun.

I came back and since my key says I can get into the concierge lounge, i tried it.  It got me to the floor and the door was open so I went in.  Tonight, it worked to get me to the floor but not in the door.  Someone came along and when I showed them my key, let me in, lol.  So I grabbed some cookies, pop and an orange and came back to the room.   I'm going to try it for breakfast in the morning and see what happens

The river is definitely flooded, but downtown is totally dry.  I'm only a couple blocks away and the street closest to the river is only closed in a very small area.  I hear the worst is in West Memphis. If you didn't look to the west, you wouldn't know it was flooded.  I'm not minimizing the fact that there is real damage, but the media has made it sound like Memphis is totally underwater.  It isn't.

DR Laura, I've never seen a meeting and events so well planned.  It's really amazing.  There were 100 people at dinner tonight and between 200-300 for the conference.  There are judges, government lawyers, private lawyers, non profit group lawyers,  all together.  Cool. I've heard the sessions are more workshop than lecture.  I'm looking forward to finding that out..  What really blows me away is how friendly everyone is.  I'm glad I"m here and will likely come back next year.   They are already asking us to book our hotel room for next year, lol
